Practice, Practice...

Practice, Practice...

Smiling As a Practice

"In the exercise 'Breathing In, I Smile', you may ask: Why should I smile, when there is no joy in me? The answer to that is: Smiling is a practice. There are over three hundred muscles in your face. When you are angry or fearful, these muscles tense up. The tension in these muscles creates a feeling of hardness. If you know how to breathe in and produce a smile, however, the tension will disappear -- it is what I call 'mouth yoga.' Make smiling an exercise. Just breathe in and smile -- the tension will disappear and you will feel much better." -- Thich Nhat Hanh, in 'Be Free Where You Are'

Today I practiced my breathing and smiling, while floating on a favorite raft back home in Zweet. Before I logged off, I captured a quick screen shot on low graphics settings (as my connection was being too temperamental to allow for higher graphics settings this afternoon).

Later in the evening, I practiced again -- this time with PS, to see what kind of an image I might potentially pull out of that low quality shot. This was an extremely challenging project, and the resulting image is likely only meaningful to me personally (because I so genuinely enjoy that location)... but the practice is what was important.

Location: Zweet ZurroundingZ, Etana

a target

a target

this is me getting ready for the first shift of my wednesday morning beating.
over the years i've come to realize that guys don't want a goaltender... they want a target... a moving piece of meat to wire shots at and turn inside out with their practiced moves.
but, that doesn't bother me... goaltenders prize bruises and pain like some athletes do a trophy or medal.

no other player knows the staggering high of picking a puck out of the air, stopping a sure goal. no other player knows the lows of letting an entire team down. make the easy saves look difficult... make the difficult saves look easy.

in the dresssing room, they say we're "flakey"... they say we're "wierd" or "different" because we'll willingly stand in front of a frozen piece of rubber travelling in excess of 60 to 100 miles per hour. that's our job... our purpose...

I say, it's wednesday morning, and my motto is "Play Hurt"... bring that shit on!

Day 26/365 - Things I miss the most

Not to many ideas for todays shoot. After taking a trip to Pasadena to try on some shoes at the new balance store. Seriously i didn't know there was that much to shoes and feet. Anyway with not many ideas for a shot i just looked around my room. There i noticed in the corner my skates. I love these skate. So light and form fitted perfect for my feet. With life beating me down and the constant stress of bills and rent hanging over my head i just don't have the time to enjoy one of the things i love the most. I miss hockey. I miss hockey with my friends. I need to skate more. I miss the simple joy of being on a team working for a common goal. Shot using my nikkor 50mm 1.8 once again and using my diy make shift lightbox, sb-800 on the right side shot though an umbrella and a sb-600 on the left with another shoot though umbrella all triggered with nikon CLS.

Stealth

Stealth

This photo -- or more specifically, Mike's face -- represents the highlight of the whole day.

"No time to prepare...
0-80 mph [sic] in 2.3 SECONDS"

Taken by one of Stealth's cameras. Stealth basically fires you out of the platform thing at 80mph, then up an almost vertical incline, 205 feet high, then drops you back down to the bottom again down an equally vertical decline. You reach 4.8Gs. The whole ride only lasts 30 seconds.

This photo was taken about a second into the 2 second acceleration to 80mph.

I've been told I just look bored. I probably was until we hit the incline. I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about a roller coaster that lasted 30 seconds and consisted of one incline and a mirrored decline.

(Also, my scanner appears to be quite dirty. And the pixelation of the photo is down to Thorpe Park, not me.)

Hometown Carvinal

Assignment 52 / Hometown

I had such grand ideas for this week. Maybe a diptech of our Texas-Louisiana-mix-culture of an area. Maybe a skyline of Houston. Maybe a beach shot of Galveston. Instead, we spent the day pumpkin carving followed up with a little carvinal. Brooke had a blast! If only having this much fun could remain this simple.

Orange Makes us Happy (3/52)

Orange Makes us Happy (3/52)

I love the color orange. (ok, I like red too). These Canadian road hockey balls are wonderful. Not only are they gentle on Ouzo's teeth since they're smooth and do not pick up any debree like tennis balls do, but they're also visible in all weather, including snow. They do not bounce, but that's not the end of the world. They're also very resistant, though eventually Ouzo manages to apply enough pressure to crack them - you can see this one has started to give in already :).

Oh, and most importantly - they fit perfectly in a Chuckit!!! :)

Too bad I haven't found any place in Denver that sells them. These were shipped to us by my SIL from Canada a few months ago.

Playing with the manual Helios 44-2 lens and a very moving subject - he was running towards me here.

Poof!

Poof!

It's not a magic trick--the ball just got caught in the snow on top of the boards.

Poker with an Unseen Devil

Poker with an Unseen Devil

So here's the story behind this one. I was listening to some OAR and the song "That was a Crazy Game of Poker" came on. If you don't know it, it's a song about playing poker with the devil. The more recent editions of the song have more to it that explains more of the story than the original lyrics which only reference the devil vaguely. Anyways, so it gave me this idea for a shot of me playing poker with the devil (hence the red-ish tint in the photo). I took the idea a bit further and made a subtle choice of which cards to use. Although this isn't a good poker hand, the hand is my life really. Here's my meaning behind it: The king of hearts on top is for me, because when you get to know me, I have a big heart. The 6 is for my dad, because it's his hockey number and I chose clubs because well, its hockey you use a stick. The queen of hearts is for the ladies I care about most, because I care about them so (not saying who I had in mind, but maybe she'll find out one day). The 7 of spades is for good luck, because 7 is my lucky number. And lastly, the Ace of Spades is for thanks for all of the armed forces fighting right now. Logic: see the helmet in a little film called Full Metal Jacket. So, while it might not be the best poker hand, as said by Randy Pausch, "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, only how we play the hand."

So now that you know the story of why I composed the shot this way, here's how I did it. I set my camera up on a tripod and used the built in 10sec timer. A-Priority at f/1.8 using my new 50mm lens. I used manual focus at about the 4 foot mark and just took trial and error photos until i figured out where exactly the cards needed to be to be in focus. Then I made a mental note of where in relation to the bed post on my left and the wall on my right depth wise the cards needed to be. I hit the shutter, took a seat and viola! After that I used editing software to adjust the WB and upped the saturation and contrast and gave it a more warm red tint (idea of a devils presence I'd be playing against in theory). Then I cropped it up to give it a nice look and here it is. Hope you all like it!
