The J.C. Lore Oyster House (1934) is a substantially unaltered marine industrial building overlooking the Patuxent River at the north end of Solomons Island. While most successful seafood processing plants underwent a series of alterations and additions throughout their operation, the Lore structure is a rare surviving example of a relatively unaltered early-twentieth–century seafood packing plant. The Lore Company was among the first to ship oysters by parcel post. A major supplier of oysters to food store chains, the Lore Company helped to make "Patuxent" brand oysters famous throughout much of the Midwest. The intact original processing equipment significantly adds to the importance of this property.

The Mull of Oa

The coast of Islay has seen numerous shipwrecks, but two of them stand out, particularly due to the loss of young life involved. These are the Otranto and the Tuscania. Both wrecks are commemorated on the huge monument there in the distance. The story of HMS Otranto I shall tell later, when we visit Machir Bay where it happened, but the SS Tuscania sank out there in the grey waters of the North Channel, between the Mull of Oa and the coast of Ireland.

At the outbreak of the Great War, the Royal Navy commandeered a large number of ships for military use. In particular, passenger liners were commandeered for use as troop transports. In the age before passenger flights, in fact almost before any flights, the only means of crossing the Atlantic was by ship. While the names of some of the great liners such as Titanic and Lusitania are still household names, there were huge numbers of other ships plying the routes between the ports of Europe and those of Canada and particularly America. One such ship, owned by the Cunard Steam Ship Company and completed in 1915, was the SS Tuscania, a liner of 14,348 tons displacement, and under the command of Captain Peter Alexander McLean.

When the Americans belatedly decided to play their part in the war in 1917 (prompted by the sinking of another great Cunard liner, the Lusitania), their troops had to be brought across the Atlantic on troop ships and in early 1918, it was the Tuscania’s turn to make one of these runs.

The passengers for the SS Tuscania’s last voyage consisted of the 6th battalion of the 20th Engineers, the 107th Military Police, the 107th Supply train, three aero squadrons (100th, 158th, 263rd), and a number of replacement officers and soldiers for the 32nd Division. In addition, she carried 30 mules, supply wagons, boxes of bacon and airplane parts. In all, there were 2,013 troops and 384 crew aboard.

Having boarded at Hoboken, New Jersey, on the 25th January 1918, the men were sent below before the ship cast off, so that they would be out of sight of the prying eyes of any spies, keen to report the ship’s cargo and likely destination back to Germany. Controversy was to continue for many years after the war as to whether this was what actually happened. Once the black and grey camouflaged ship was out to sea, the men were allowed up on deck again.

The following day, January 26th, the Tuscania entered Halifax, Nova Scotia, through an opening in the steel anti-submarine net, where the men were able to observe the devastation caused the month before when the 'Ioma,' a Belgian relief ship and the 'Mount Blanc', an ammunition vessel from New York, collided. The ammunition ship exploded, killing some 1,500 people. The Tuscania only stayed a few hours and sailed in the afternoon.

Once at sea again, the Tuscania and the other waiting ships formed into a convoy, code-named XH-20. The 14 vessels in the convoy and their excorts formed into 5 columns, and were led by the British cruiser HMS Cochrane. As well as the cruiser, there to protect the convoy from enemy surface ships, a number of destroyer escorts formed an outer ring for protection against submarines.

In addition to ships and U-boats, there was also the threat of mines, and to protect the ship from these, paravanes were strung over the sides of the bow, designed to ward the mines away along a cable to a blade which cut the tethers. The mine having floated to the surface, could then be destroyed by gunfire.

The voyage across the Atlantic was monotonous for the troops, there being little to do. The weather had been 20 degrees below freezing when they left Canada, and the temperature did at least improve, during the voyage. The convoy zig-zagged to make it harder for U-boats to position themselves for an attack, changing course by as much as 40 degrees, as advised by the lead escort. One or two ships, such as a tanker at the back of the convoy, were unable to zig-zag as they had difficulty keeping up with the convoy.

While the convoy was out in the Atlantic, the probability of being found by U-boats was reasonably low, but as the ships approached Britain, they had to pass either to the north or south of Ireland, and it was in these narrowing waters that the U-boats tended to wait. Protection for the convoy was therefore increased as it approached the North Channel, by the arrival on February 4th, 1918, of eight British destroyers of the 4th flotilla, from their base at Lough Swilly in Northern Ireland. The cruiser HMS Cochrane remained in command.

Tuesday February 5th, 1918, dawned partly cloudy, with a strong southerly breeze blowing, which meant that as the convoy approached the North Channel, it came into the lee of Ireland and the seas improved. At 4pm they saw the coast of Islay to port and the troops started to think that they had reached safety. Walter Owen Briggs Home

Walter Briggs (born: February 27, 1877; died January 17, 1952) began his career working in the Michigan Central Railroad yards in Detroit in the late Nineteenth Century. B. J. Everitt played a key role in Briggs’ becoming a wealthy man and the eventual owner of both this appealing home and the Detroit Tigers. Everitt was born in Ridgetown, Ontario in 1872 and apprenticed as a carriage builder. He moved to Detroit in the early 1890s and spent seven years working for the C. R. Wilson Carriage Company located at Brush and Woodward. Everitt then created his own firm to manufacture bodies for the many wagons and carriages produced in Detroit, the Everitt Carriage Trimming Company. In the early years of the Twentieth Century, the nation’s most successful auto manufacturer was Ransom. E. Olds whose factory was located on East Jefferson. As frequently happened in that era of factories with heavy oak floors, his plant burned to the ground in 1901. To continue turning out cars, he bought bodies from Everitt. Indeed, Everitt made the most famous and innovative body used for a vehicle in the early 1900s, the curved dash body that helped to make Olds’ well-known. Everitt quickly realized the tremendous profit that might be made in supplying bodies to the growing number of aspiring Detroit auto manufacturers. At this time, auto firms lacked capital so most of them, including Henry Ford, made few parts for their cars. Rather, they assembled components bought from Detroit’s machine shops and body manufacturers.

Because his business was prospering, Everitt erected the large mill style-building that still stands at the northeast corner of Mack and Beaufait. Briggs quit the Michigan Central Railroad to work for Everitt who quickly recognized his skills and rapidly promoted him, eventually to plant manger. Everitt got into the automobile business himself, first with an unsuccessful car named for the successful Indian fighter, Anthony Wayne, and produced at a plant at Piquette and Brush. Later, he joined with William Metzer and Walter Flanders to produce the EMF in a large plant on Piquette built in about 1908, the one that burned to the ground in June, 2005. EMF was extremely successful, trailing only Ford in production in the 1908-1910 span. After much litigation, Studebaker took over EMF and produced their cars in Detroit until the mid-1920.

By 1907, Walter Briggs obtained a controlling interest in the Everitt Carriage works and, in 1909, changed the name to Briggs Manufacturing. This firm and its rival, Fisher Brothers, were the two largest producers of vehicle bodies as the auto industry boomed. Fisher was eventually purchased by GM, so Briggs became the nation’s largest producer of auto and truck bodies—many of them sold to Chrysler after that firm was formed in the late 1920s. Briggs, however, supplied many other producers, including Hudson.

Similar to other Detroit manufacturers, the Briggs firm suffered greatly during the Depression. To maintain the flow of income, Briggs turned to the production of plumbing equipment. After World War II, the firm increasingly became a producer of industrial plumbing apparatus rather than auto bodies. The company survived until 1997 when it was purchased by a South American conglomerate, Ceramicas Industriales, the second largest producer of ceramics in the New World.

Apparently, Walter Briggs had a longstanding interest in baseball. Richard Bak quotes his clear memories of the rough and unsavory environment that surrounded the Sunday games in Burns Park just after the Tigers entered the American League. Accountant Frank Navin gained controlling interest in the Tigers as early as 1908 but William Yawkey and his heirs owned one-half the team until 1920 when Walter Briggs and John Kelsey—proprietor of Kelsey Wheel—each purchased 25 percent of the team. In 1927, Briggs purchased the shares of Kelsey giving him half ownership of the Tigers. Under Frank Navin’s leadership, the Tigers won the American League Pennant in 1934 and then defeated the Chicago Cubs for the World Series championship the following season. Navin died just a few weeks after his team brought the championship to Detroit and his widow promptly sold the Navin half of the Tigers to Walter Briggs.

Briggs continued to own the Tigers until his death in January, 1952. Under Briggs’ management, the Tigers contended in the early 1940s. The won the American League in 1940 but were defeated by the Reds in the World Series in seven games. They finished second in 1944 and then won the league championship and again defeated the Cubs in the World Series in 1945. In 1946 and 1947 and then again in 1950, the Tigers finished second in the American League.

Flush production from Yates field presented storage and transportation problems to the operators. On October 1, 1927, the first field-wide proration in Texas went into effect. Allowables were based on the total potential production of all wells in the field. Each well was given a share of the pipeline outlet equal to the ratio of its potential to that of the total field. Shortly thereafter, a rule that limited each well's penetration of the lime formation to 225 feet was adopted to allow each operator the same advantage in the cavernlike reservoir. On June 1, 1928, an official order placed the proration enforcement in Yates field under the direction of the Railroad Commission.qv On July 1 a new proration program was adopted, based on both potential production and acreage holdings. In October 1928 oil migrating from poorly cased deep wells was discovered seeping under the banks of the Pecos River and floating on the surface. Thousands of barrels of crude were recovered daily by skimming the river and by drilling 20-foot to 400-foot wells. By mid-1933 over 3.25 million barrels of seepage oil had been gathered. Drilling activity in the field peaked at the end of 1928, when 175 producing wells were completed and ten dry holes were plugged. By July 1929 the field consisted of 15,000 proven acres. In September 1929 the Yates 30-A, operated by Transcontinental and Mid-Kansas and located a few hundred yards down the canyon from the discovery well, set a world record when it produced 8,528 barrels of oil per hour or 204,672 barrels per day. Field production peaked in 1929, when more than 41 million barrels of oil was produced. In 1930 Transcontinental sold its interest in Yates field to Mid-Kansas.

By 1941 Yates field production had dropped to under six million barrels of oil, and on August 31, 1943, the Railroad Commission ordered the observance of special rules to reduce water production in the field. Oil production climbed to over thirteen million barrels during 1945 and to more than eighteen million by 1948 from 22,671 proven acres. The number of flowing wells that year was 511, seventy-eight of which were on artificial lift. In 1962 the Ohio Oil Company and its subsidiary, Mid-Kansas Oil and Gas Company, became known as Marathon Oil Company. From November 1968 through December 1972 five operators in the field were permitted by the Railroad Commission to inject salt water and gas into producing formations to maintain field pressure and to store gas temporarily. On July 1, 1976, unitization became a reality in Yates field with Marathon as unit operator. The injection of gas back into the reservoir maintained pressure and retarded water encroachment, thus exposing a greater area of the reservoir to gravity drainage and doubling field production. On January 11, 1985, Yates field produced its billionth barrel of oil. By 1988 new techniques were in use in the field-secondary recovery methods of water-flooding, polymer injection, carbon dioxide flooding, and the sinking of new wells within the proven acreage, or infill drilling. At the end of 1989 Yates field reported a yearly production of 27,292,621 barrels of oil and 56,120,285 million cubic feet of gas. Cumulative crude production of 1,180,073,629 barrels over the first sixty-three years placed Yates among the most prolific oilfields in the world.

Beasley Students and Staff Host "Shoes for Water" Collection

The Beasley Elementary service-learning club, the Generous Jaguars, teamed up with the third graders at their school to help with a recent project. The school participated in a shoe drive to help provide clean drinking water to people living in third world countries. Students, parents and staff donated 728 pairs of shoes to the Shoes for Water program led by George "The Shoeman" Hutchings. This program takes used and new shoes, resells them in other countries, and uses the profits to purchase water well drilling equipment. The equipment is shipped overseas so people can access clean drinking water in places such as Haiti, India and Kenya. The Generous Jaguars coordinated the Beasley shoe drive and the third grade students collected and counted the shoes during the collection. At the end of the drive, a representative from the Shoes for Water program collected the Beasley donations and was very moved by the students' hard work and generosity.
