218/365: Back to Basics.

218/365: Back to Basics.

This shot was originally destined to be something bigger. I had an idea regarding Photoshop and was gonna use this shot alongside other textures etv. But when i got it into the computer i realised that i was extremly happy with it sooc.

Its very rare that i dodnt tamper with any of my shots but leaving this one alone reminded me of the early days of my photography, almost two years ago. Back then i just had my basic point-and-shoot lumix, and i never altered any shots, not even cropping them. I used to spend so much time on composition to make sure that the shot didnt need any post processing. To be fair back then, i hadnt even heard of photoshop or lightroom and i remember what i was like when i first spent time messing with them.

Its always good though sometimes to go back to basics and remember what got you into photography in the first place.

On a seperate note, my very good mate Daz* has been on at me for ages about getting a flash and opening up new avenues to me. Ive never really been keen on the idea, id rather have a new lense or gadgit, but i decide here to use the built in flash. I set the flash to full power and under exposed the sky as much as i could. Setting off the flash with the camera at this setting really lightened up "me" and gave me a great background backdrop.

Maybe i will invest in a flash at somepoint. Who knows?

Learning to Look the Part (4) - The Complete Pakage

Learning to Look the Part (4) - The Complete Pakage

This is the gear that is suggested to us officials is we wish to really "look the part". Of course, this are the basics. As an official grows in rank, it is likely that they will invest in equipment of higher quality. I have learned which models and brand names of equipment are the top (however they cost a pretty penny). This all goes hand in hand with looking professional; for me, looking like a referee is the first aspect a coach will pick up on before you even make your first call of the game. It all depends on how far an official wants to go in investing in their career. I have learned that coaches will notice a referee who is not physically up to par; an official's credibility has already taken a big dive and thus he/she will have to work 10x harder to rebuild their credibility.

Whistle = 7$
Shirt = 25$
Pants = 45$
Shoes = 70$
Jacket = 70$

Having a coach's respect before even stepping on the floor = priceless.

Broken global financial system needs redesigning

Broken global financial system needs redesigning

Broken global financial system needs redesigning

IF world leaders -- business, political and civil society -- expected the Magic Mountain in Switzerland to provide answers for a quick fix to the global economic meltdown, they were sadly mistaken. Instead, there was much "gloom and doom" among those who made it up to the snow-capped mountains of Davos. Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell, added to the economic chill by stating that "the behaviour of companies accelerates the crisis. But we don't really have a choice because we have to do what is best for the company".

He was referring to layoffs, and cautioned against expecting solutions to work immediately. "Don't think you'll have a package today and things will immediately get back to normal," he said. "It will take time."

One thing was clear: the parties were decidedly subdued, many political leaders stayed away, and the CEOs, high-flyers of previous years, were humbled and very low-key. They had no idea how bad the situation would get.

Analysts lamented that "we haven't even seen the corner, we don't know where the corner is".

There was a lot of soul-searching and not much lecturing by the developed nations now in the grip of the worst economic downturn since World War 2.

Two years ago, Nouriel Roubini of New York University warned that a "hard landing" was being obscured by "record profits and bonuses". In February 2007, he said "the party will soon be over".

Now he warns that "worse lies ahead" and "banks face bigger credit losses than they realise, more financial companies will require state takeovers and the world economy will keep shrinking throughout 2009".

According to Stephen Roach, chairman of Morgan Stanley in Asia: "We are in a global recession, the likes of which we have never seen. But there is no quick fix."

He added that "we are now moving into the ugliest phase of every crisis, the blame game".

And even as the blame game continues, what is urgent now is to draw up and implement solutions.

But there were no new suggestions from those gathered in Davos. The statement that this is a global crisis calling for a global solution was heard again and again.

Montek S. Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of India's Planning Commission, said a movement towards global, rather than national solutions, is needed.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown added that cooperation between major powers and global financial institutions is vital to ensure a continued flow of credit to developing and smaller countries, which are likely to be the biggest victims of the recession.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested the setting up of an United Nations Economic Council similar to the UN Security Council. She said that economic principles needed to be enshrined in "a new charter for a global economic order".

Forget about a global solution. Even the EU leaders themselves, after calling for a coordinated approach, are pursuing their own individual policies.

Since the beginning of the year, Germany has launched a new economic recovery plan. Britain unveiled a fresh rescue package for its banking sector and a number of countries are putting together plans to help their auto companies.

And the fact remains, as Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva pointed out, that "we live in a global economy, but we only have national authority". And that makes a global, coordinated approach that much more difficult.

There were other suggestions for moving forward. Among them that the old laissez faire does not work and there is an urgent need to find new solutions; public servants should not be running banks; and "excessive dependence on what is basically the only reserve currency is dangerous for the world economy".

There was also agreement that existing multilateral institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have proven inadequate in the face of the current crisis.

Their management does not reflect the changed world environment, and they do not have the financial power.

Ahluwalia pointed out that while national governments are spending hundreds of billions on stimulus packages, the IMF has only US$250 billion (RM900 billion) on hand, and has to ask for another US$250 billion.

In the long term, multilateral institutions will need to become more inclusive.

The existing system is stuck in the immediate post-world-war period, where the victors dictated the terms. And they still continue to hold on to the multilateral institutions. There is an urgent need for the global institutions to be more inclusive.

The focus now shifts to the G-20, scheduled to meet in London in April. But whether the G-20 will be effective is yet to be seen.

The bottom line is that the world is currently experiencing a paradigm shift, and a way must be found to open up and redesign th

Deflation: How to Survive & Thrive in the Coming Wave of Deflation

Deflation: How to Survive & Thrive in the Coming Wave of Deflation

Selected as one of the "Best Business Books of the Year" by Library Journal, Deflation provides tools for investors to protect their assets and invest profitably in deflationary times, a post-inflation economic environment that few of today's investors have experiencedand even fewer understand. Lively and easy-to-understand, it tells investors how to recognize telltale signs of deflation, discusses the industry sectors that are positioned to outperform the overall market, and reveals 13 deflation-ready investing strategiesincluding low-risk fixed income techniques designed to sustain equity-style total returns.

Most people associate deflation with the 1930s: depression, unemployment, and a spectacular stock market crash. But A. Gary Shilling doesn't think that deflation is all that bad--in fact, he says, if you're prepared, deflation can be a good thing. In Deflation, Shilling outlines why he thinks we're about to enter a prolonged period of deflation and offers advice for businesses and investors on how best to position themselves and their finances and cope with the specter of falling prices.
Shilling sees several forces feeding the trend toward deflation, including the end of the cold war, reduced government spending, growing surpluses, the widespread adoption of technology, the emergence of the Internet, deregulation, and the recent Asian contagion. He also believes that the stock market is due for a severe correction that "would destroy enough individual wealth to chase consumers out of spending and into a saving spree," thereby slowing demand for goods and services and encouraging deflation even more.
Among the investments that Shilling recommends for deflationary times are treasury coupons and zero-coupon bonds, utilities, and U.S. stocks (after the correction, of course). Given Alan Greenspan's maniacal focus on fighting inflation, it might be difficult to swallow Shilling's deflationary forecast. Nevertheless, Shilling has done his homework, and it shows: he builds a case that's both convincing and easy to read. No one knows for sure what our economic future holds, but any open-minded investor would be prudent to hear Shilling out. --Harry C. Edwards

Good Omens

There is a distinct hint of Armageddon in the air. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (recorded, thankfully, in 1655, before she blew up her entire village and all its inhabitants, who had gathered to watch her burn), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse are revving up their mighty hogs and hitting the road, and the world's last two remaining witch-finders are getting ready to fight the good fight, armed with awkwardly antiquated instructions and stick pins. Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. . . . Right. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.
Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon -- each of whom has lived among Earth's mortals for many millennia and has grown rather fond of the lifestyle -- are not particularly looking forward to the coming Rapture. If Crowley and Aziraphale are going to stop it from happening, they've got to find and kill the Antichrist (which is a shame, as he's a really nice kid). There's just one glitch: someone seems to have misplaced him. . . .
First published in 1990, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's brilliantly dark and screamingly funny take on humankind's final judgment is back -- and just in time -- in a new hardcover edition (which includes an introduction by the authors, comments by each about the other, and answers to some still-burning questions about their wildly popular collaborative effort) that the devout and the damned alike will surely cherish until the end of all things.

Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the machinations of Crowley, who did not so much fall as saunter downwards, and in part to the mysterious ways as manifested in the form of a part-time rare book dealer, an angel named Aziraphale. Like top agents everywhere, they've long had more in common with each other than the sides they represent, or the conflict they are nominally engaged in. The only person who knows how it will all end is Agnes Nutter, a witch whose prophecies all come true, if one can only manage to decipher them. The minor characters along the way (Famine makes an appearance as diet crazes, no-calorie food and anorexia epidemics) are as much fun as the story as a whole, which adds up to one of those rare books which is enormous fun to read the first time, and the second time, and the third time...

Bainbridge Street

Bainbridge Street

Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Stuyvesant Heights is a residential district that was largely developed between 1870-and 1920. It lies in the north-central part of Brooklyn. The name "Stuyvesant Heights" came into local usage during the first decade of the 20th century and distinguishes it from the larger Bedford-Stuyvesant area in which it lies, and under which name it was originally heard by the Commission. The name Stuyvesant Heights derives from the fact that Stuyvesant Avenue is the district's principal thoroughfare.

An Historic District should be possessed of such a distinctive quality that, on entering it front any aide, one should at once become aware of a neighborhood set apart from its surroundings. Stuyvesant Heights is just such an area, it is almost exclusively a residential neighborhood. Its pleasant tree-shaded streets and broad avenues are lined with a variety of dwellings. While there are an unusual number of free-standing suburban-type residences and over a dozen four-story apartment houses, it is the row upon row of two and three-story houses, many set behind attractively planted front yards, that gives the district its unusually harmonious character and special quality. There are only two commercial buildings within the district, although several small stores serve community needs. There are also four churches of various denominations and two parochial schools. Decatur Junior High School, built in 1965, is located just outside the Historic District.

The development of the area, concentrated in the five decades between 1870 and 1920, reflects the successive stylistic phases of American architecture as Interpreted by local builders and architects. The Italianate mode, popular in the 1860s, is characteristic of the earliest houses and is continued on into the seventies, often modified by French Second Empire and neo-Grec details. The neo-Grec style continued well into the 1880s when it was supplanted by the more sophisticated styles of the later 19th century—the Romanesque Revival, the Queen Anne mode and the new classicism inspired by the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. Of the three groups of ecclesiastical structures in the district, two are Victorian Gothic in character, while the third is a fine example of the Romanesque Revival style. The turn of the century saw the influence of the neo-Federal, neo-Georgian and neo-Renaissance styles. Late in the second decade of this century, house designs derived from the Spanish Renaissance appeared.

The majority of streets offer an interesting mixture of architectural styles, while within each style there is a delightful variety of design. Visual harmony is assured, however, through the predominantly low building heights, the long rows of townhouses and the use of a variety of materials in harmony with one another. Brick and brownstone predominate in the older portion of the district; at the turn of the century, limestone makes its appearance, first on Bainbridge Street and later along Stuyvesant Avenue. Decorative terra cotta appears occasionally. The ironwork at the stoops and yard railings includes standard designs and castings found elsewhere in the city, but here they are for the most part unusually well-preserved.

It is interesting to note that there is a certain time lag in the introduction of new architectural styles compared to their appearance in Manhattan. This indicates the innate conservatism of most of the local builders. Stuyvesant Heights contains, however, a number of elegant, architect-designed apartment and row houses, notably those by Magnus Dahlander, a Brooklyn architect, and William Debus, whose office and home were in Manhattan. These buildings were as fashionably up-to-date as anything built in Manhattan. This is also true of the two commercial buildings of the district, which were designed by well-known Hew York architects and are located on the east side of Throop Avenue between Decatur and MacDonough Streets.

The present gridiron street system was laid out in 1835, as shown by the Street Commissioners' map of 1839, and the blocks were lotted. The new grid system led to the abandonment of the Brooklyn and Jamaica Turnpike in favor of a continuation of Brooklyn's Fulton Street, which was opened up just south of the Historic District in 1842. The lands for the Street grid within the Historic District, however, were not sold to the City of Brooklyn until 1852. Earlier in the same, year, Charles W. Betts had purchased Maria Lott's tract of land. This marked the end of two centuries of Dutch patrimonial holdings. Betts, as Secretary of the Brooklyn Railroad Company, acquired the land for the trolley lines on Fulton Street and for investment purposes. Most of the streets were not actually opened, however, until the 1860s.

The streets in the district were named after prominent figures in American history. Stuyvesant was the famous last Director General of the Dutch Province of New Netherland, while Francis Lewis was

Lead Church, Saxton

Lead Church, Saxton

St Mary's Lead Church stands alone in the middle of a field and not far from where the Battle of Towton was fought on March 29, 1461. The church was built in the 12th century and used by the residents of the village of Lead (now disappeared] especially the Tyas and Scargill families (probably used as a private chapel). Tombs of these families are located by the altar with the family coats of arms inscribed thereon. Lead church is a small church, no more than 18ft long and the building is a simple rectangle with a bell-cote at the western end, which is thought to date from the 14th century. The church is furnished very simply. The pews arranged in it are thought to be medieval and are just simple benches.

The decline of the area and the reduction in the number of people attending services at the church led to the declaration of redundancy and in June 1980 St Mary's was placed in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. About one service a year is held here.

Choosing lead to edge the windows gives a neater and more durable finish. It's taking longer than I calculated, but worth it in terms of cleaning up time later on. On can imagine the grout squeezing into the end-on glass and the fiddling thereafter!! Also minimizes water traps.

Here, the adhesive sides and rear is cured. Excess adhesive cleaned off then gently forcing the lead home tight to the irregular glass edges, which also leaves good channel, and further protects glass, for more gunge.

Mt. Rainier at sunrise near dusk

Mt. Rainier at sunrise near dusk

Little Tahoma Peak (left) and Mt. Rainier, provide the stunning backdrop to the Sunrise visitors' center in Mt. Rainier National Park.

Wednesday July 15th, 2010, my wife and I drove into Seattle. We spent the day there. I got my Jet Boil stove fixed with a new igniter at the flagship REI store (Thanks Andy). It had failed on the recent two day float trip my son and I took on the Grande Ronde River in Oregon. I bought some books at the Tukwila Half Price used book store, then had a nice Thai lunch next door. My wife got some quality penny slot investment time at the Muckleshoot reservation, then we headed for Sunrise at Mt. Rainier, trying to time an early evening arrival.

NOTE: This gets confusing for folks whoe aren't from the state of Washington but there are two major visitors' center on Mt. Rainier. One on the south side of the mountain at 5,382 feet elevation and it is called: PARADISE. Record snow fall occur here yet the road to PARADISE remains open year round. The other visitors' center is on the N.E. side of Mt. Rainier. It is at 6,390 feet. It is called SUNRISE. The road to SUNRISE is closed most of the year. Though SUNRISE is a thousand feet higher than PARADISE, it gets much less snow. The reason? Mt. Rainier creates its own weather and most of the winters' snow falls at mid-elevations not the highest. So if it gets confusing talking about taking "sunset" photos at "SUNRISE" then that is the reason. SUNRISE is a location within the park.

We made it to Sunrise as planned and found the meadows starting to appear from beneath the snow pack. But, when we hiked up the trail above Sunrise, we soon hit snow. Lots of snow. The snow was soft and easy traveling, so we hike a little over a mile along the Sunrise to Dege Peak trail. We didn't meet another hiker, doing this hike at dusk.

Though I hoped for some good sunset photos at SUNRISE, they didn't happen. The light was filtered through to much haze. The next day when we went to PARADISE at Mt. Rainier, the sky was crystal clear at dawn, and we got much better photos.

Still, we enjoyed the hike and where avalanche lilies were out in mass on the Paradise side when I visited it on my own on Monday (7.12.10), the flowers out at SUNRISE were the interesting Mountain Pasque flowers, which are most famous for the fall seed heads than their lovely spring blossoms. A.K.A.: Western Anemone and in seed head form: "old man of the mountains" "mouse-on-a-stick" "dishmop" etc.

Mountain pasqueflower [Anemone occidentalis] is a member of the buttercup family.

After returning toward our hike on the Dege Peak trail, we headed up to the saddle on the Burroughs Mountain trail, to watch the last light fade from Mt. Rainier. Two rangers came down the trail, carrying cross country skis.

These photos were all taken on 7.15.10 at sunset and Sunrise.

From Life, June 11, 1925, page 1. The text reads:
What should a family's very first investment be? Bonds? A home? Insurance? There is one thing even more vital than these. Their future success is going to depend principally upon his and her mental growth. Will their social acquaintances find her interesting, or mentally commonplace? Will men in business be impresses with his range of information, his capacity to think straight and talk well? More than 150,000 families have found the answer to these questions with the help of Dr. Charles W. Eliot, for forty years President of Harvard. These families are spending 15 minutes a day with the most famous library in the world, Dr. Eliot's five-foot shelf of books. You know something about this great library, but every American household should have a copy of the little book which tells the whole story. The book is free and will be sent by mail; the coupon below will bring it. Out of the great mass of books (more than four million volumes) Dr. Eliot and his associates undertook to select 418 great masterpieces that contain what he termed "the essentials of a liberal education." These he combined in fifty volumes and arranged with notes and reading courses so that they can be thoroughly mastered, even though you read them only fifteen minutes a day. Fifteen minutes a day with the world's greatest travelers, scientists, poets, essayists, biographers and historians. Fifteen minutes of the sort of reading that made Lincoln a well-read man, though his formal education never went beyond the common schools--surely this is the most valuable investment that any household can make. For here is the highroad to charm, to brain power, to success, which every man and woman will find it profitable to follow, especially when the money cost is only a few cents a week. Decide today that no matter how little time you have for reading you are going to make every minute count. Let Dr. Eliot guide you in this important department of your life as you would let a physician guide you in matters of health, or a banker in the care of your savings. His guidance is free; it is contained in the little book "Fifteen Minutes a Day." This booklet contains the contents, plan and purpose of the most widely read home library in the world. It is sent absolutely free and without obligation to those who mail the coupon. Send for your copy now.

I received THE most INCREDIBLE swap from Ms. Bryanna/Canary's Cupcake. Her jewelry is to-die-for! Everything just does look like a beautiful, delicious cupcake! We met through our mutual interests of art, Marie Antoinette, Alice in Wonderland, Blythe, etc., and have swapped a couple times. She is so talented, and really outdid herself, and check out the teeny tiny statement necklace she made for my Blythes. LOVE in a priority box!
