BASICS OF HELICOPTER FLIGHT - HELICOPTER FLIGHT
Basics of helicopter flight - Cheapest airline tickets to brazil - Cheap airline tickets singapore.
Basics Of Helicopter Flight
- HElicopTEr is the ninth studio album by the post-industrial electronic band Download. HElicopTEr strays away the group's two previous albums FiXer and Effector in that it is less ambient and more experimental.
- A type of aircraft that derives both lift and propulsion from one or two sets of horizontally revolving overhead rotors. It is capable of moving vertically and horizontally, the direction of motion being controlled by the pitch of the rotor blades
- an aircraft without wings that obtains its lift from the rotation of overhead blades
- A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by one or more engine driven rotors. In contrast with fixed-wing aircraft, this allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards and laterally.
- The essential facts or principles of a subject or skill
- Essential food and other supplies
- fundamentals: principles from which other truths can be derived; "first you must learn the fundamentals"; "let's get down to basics"
- a statement of fundamental facts or principles
- The Basics (pron. /??'b?z?t?/) are a three-piece band from Melbourne, Australia, formed by Wally De Backer and Kris Schroeder in 2002.
- Basic training
- a formation of aircraft in flight
- Shoot (wildfowl) in flight
- (in soccer, cricket, etc.) Deliver (a ball) with well-judged trajectory and pace
- shoot a bird in flight
- an instance of traveling by air; "flying was still an exciting adventure for him"
Basic Helicopter Aerodynamics (Aerospace Series (PEP))
Basic Helicopter Aerodynamics is widely appreciated as an easily accessible, rounded introduction to the first principles of the aerodynamics of helicopter flight. Simon Newman has brought this third edition completely up to date with a full new set of illustrations and imagery. An accompanying website www.wiley.com/go/seddon contains all the calculation files used in the book, problems, solutions, PPT slides and supporting MATLAB® code.
Simon Newman addresses the unique considerations applicable to rotor UAVs and MAVs, and coverage of blade dynamics is expanded to include both flapping, lagging and ground resonance. New material is included on blade tip design, flow characteristics surrounding the rotor in forward flight, tail rotors, brown-out, blade sailing and shipborne operations.
Concentrating on the well-known Sikorsky configuration of single main rotor with tail rotor, early chapters deal with the aerodynamics of the rotor in hover, vertical flight, forward flight and climb. Analysis of these motions is developed to the stage of obtaining the principal results for thrust, power and associated quantities. Later chapters turn to the characteristics of the overall helicopter, its performance, stability and control, and the important field of aerodynamic research is discussed, with some reference also to aerodynamic design practice.
This introductory level treatment to the aerodynamics of helicopter flight will appeal to aircraft design engineers and undergraduate and graduate students in aircraft design, as well as practising engineers looking for an introduction to or refresher course on the subject.

Camera Case
I was looking to purchase a pelican case to store my camera equipment. The cases are way too expensive for what i need them to do but i like the pick and pluck system.
Just turns out i bought a suitcase at the salvation army and the measurements were exactly the same as the 1500 Case.
Sure, the case wont be bomb proof, waterproof or airline compatible, but it will be great to put in the trunk of my car or store under my bed.

The 1501 replacement foam has 3 layers. The pick and pluck layer, the bottom 1" foam and the top convoluted foam layer.

The Flying Club Cup
Since its release in May of 2006, Beirut's internationally celebrated Gulag Orkestar album has soundscanned more than 45,000 copies, and the band has done a tsunami of interviews, photoshoots and features (including NY Times, Spin, Pitchfork, Urb, and Village Voice). This great fervor developed around an album conceived and constructed in a teenager's New Mexico bedroom. Six months of recording has led to The Flying Club Cup, an homage to France's culture, fashion, history, and music. Two years ago, Zach Condon immersed himself in Balkan folk, absorbed sounds, scales, styles, and the sonic joys of a skeletally structured, cacophonic ensemble - and moved west. Soaking up the likes of Francois Hardy, Charles Aznavour, and, most notably, Jacques Brel (a huge influence on both Scott Walker and Mark E. Smith), Condon has been articulating his conversational French. Most of the album was created at a nondescript Albuquerque office space, a.k.a. A Hawk and a Hacksaw's practice room; Heather Trost plays violin and viola on three songs. Engineering and production assistance came from Griffin Rodriguez (A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Man Man). He helped separate the many instrumentalists involved in recording, as opposed to Gulag's largely solo flight. The orkestar, which has solidified into a core group of eight members, has grand plans for replicating the album live, and is now an integral part of Beirut's identity. Additional recording was done with Owen Pallet (Final Fantasy) at the Masonic church studio owned by The Arcade Fire. Within the spectacle and intimacy of The Flying Club Cup, you can hear a love letter to the joie de vivre that defines our existence. Listen closer, and you also hear the emergence of a singular musical talent - Mr. Zachary F. Condon, at present living in Paris - unbounded by cultural borders and by where his heart travels.
Beirut's second LP purportedly takes inspiration from French chanson of yesteryear (as opposed to the Balkan folk of yesteryear). Bandleader Zach Condon has found a new home in Paris, and a new muse as well, quickly absorbing fodder from the likes of Francois Hardy or Jacques Brel. The music remains quite recognizably Beirut--in all its oom-pa glory--but the production value is stepped up a notch. It's through the dense arrangements that it reaches new heights, this without question being the fullest offering yet. The band appeared on Owen Pallet's (Final Fantasy/Arcade Fire) new album in exchange for the use of Arcade Fire's Masonic church studio, along with the exotic pile of instruments within. Pallet ended up contributing several string arrangements and the band made full use of the studio. The result is a truly orchestral take on the simpler gypsy stomp of Gulag Orkestar or the straight-up eight-piece live band of the Lon Gisland EP. Opener "Nantes" features a perfectly broken organ and introduces the wealth of percussion that continues throughout the album, as well as some samples of French TV or radio (the most explicit Franco-features are these sampled tidbits). Waltzing glockenspiels give way to a celebratory, raucous chorus on "La Banlieu." "Un Dernier Verre" features a skittering, jazzy piano bit (in 3/4 time, natch). The Flying Club Cup lacks the immediate hits that made Gulag Orkestar explode (like "Postcards from Italy" or "Mount Wroclai"). It works as an album rather than just a collection of songs. It's a more pensive presentation--dare I say it: more mature. Beirut remains mind-boggling work for a 21-year-old, and it's exciting to watch Condon's musical palette expand as he gathers the life experience to match his voice. --Jason Pace

cheap flight to lebanon
Fear & chaos collide for a young & inexperienced israeli tank crew during the 1982 invasion of lebanon. Bsed on the true life experiences of the writer/director. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 01/18/2011 Run time: 93 minutes Rating: R
Israeli-born director and writer Samuel Maoz brings his own experience as a bewildered young soldier in the war in Lebanon in 1982 front and center in his unforgettable drama Lebanon. Maoz's visceral, deeply personal view of war is limited to the inside of a single tank, sent by Israel as part of the offensive against Lebanon. The entire view of the battle and the war experience is seen through the eyes of four young soldiers--superbly acted by Yoav Donat, Itay Tiran, Oshri Cohen, and Michael Moshonov--who are confined to the tank's tiny interior. Their vision of war is limited to what they can see through the tank's small periscope--which means that at times, their "battlefield" might be a yard of chickens, or a group of young children playing with laundry flapping in the background, or, suddenly and randomly, an ambush of Lebanese soldiers. The tension is palpable in Lebanon, and its intensity, and raw honesty, help it deliver an extremely personal view of war in its chaotic brutality. Lebanon is reminiscent of superior war films like The Story of G.I. Joe or Ran--but with the intimacy and persistent anxiety of films that also take place in small, confined places, like Apollo 13 or Das Boot. Yet Maoz and his brilliant cast deliver the deep ambivalence of war and human combat in a human, relatable way. And the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East make the messages and "sides" of the battles of Lebanon as fresh for modern viewers as for those who recall this particular war. Maoz's great skill is to take a subject as vast as war and scale it down to the most human--and therefore the most affecting--level possible. The tragedy, and gallows humor, of war are so effectively captured, that for the viewer it's almost like holding up a mirror to the human race--and mourning what is seen there. --A.T. Hurley

Accounting and Finance for Small Business Made Easy (Entrepreneur Made Easy)
Finally, a book on accounting that focuses on street-smart financial management rather than accounting mechanics
Most accounting books are either too basic or too boring. This one carves a niche all its own. Instead of trying to morph you into instant CPAs, it provides practical advice through real-life examples, making it the first accounting "page-turner."

He minimizes technical information and offers straight talk on the art of controllership--a key to ensuring company profits. Accounting and Finance for Small Business Made Easy includes:
An accounting primer that demystifies terms and practices for the non-accountant
Invaluable perspective on the critical areas for managing assets: inventory control and increasing cash flow
A 10-step plan to help you start instantly to implement effective financial management

On my recent trip to Melbourne, I was privileged enough to ride buisness on the renowed A380 airbus. It wasn't much different from a normal flight, even with the "gourmet food" (which tasted rubbish really), privacy, and space, I was sleepless. But eventually, I fell asleep and woke up to this gorgeous sight. I immediately whipped out my camera and started snapping away, I'm sure that the woman on my right thought I was insane. I wasn't aware of what these colors were or what time it was but it was breath taking and definitely made the plane ride a hundred times better.

Place : Ketagalan (the tribe name of earlist resident of Taipei area in history )Blvd. and Zhongshan(founder of ROC, overturned and changed name to PRC by Mao) S. Rd, Taipei , Taiwan
Time : Oct. 10, 2007 .
Who took the photo : Me , a Taiwanese if I may.
Building : Japanese built it during Japanese rule 1895-1945.
Flag : Republic of China , ROC, per UN record , born in 1911 passed away in ? 1949? or 1971. We think the status of Taiwan is "status Quo", since nothing really changed here in 1971. Though UN changed a lot in 1971.Flag of China from 1911 to 1949. Taiwan has not been a part of Republic of China nor People's Republic of China in any formal international document. But Taiwan has been ruled and governed by an administrative body that fled from Nanking to Taipei after loosing China to communists. Try to remember borderless international communist movement of the period. and the cultural revolution denial of all chinese tradtion and cultural value by the same PRC government .
Taiwanese soldiers and policemen, policewomen guarding the center of Taiwanese political power againt a small group of Chinese dressed in red and supported by pro- PRC media. When China was having cultural revolution Taiwanese was not too unhappy when being called Chinese, But when China opens up and people of communist china started traveling around the world, Taiwanese can not tolerate being called chinese , why?

Written by a leading expert on Taiwan, this book offers a comprehensive and engaging introduction to a country that exercises a role in the world far greater than its tiny size would indicate. Shelley Rigger explains how Taiwan became such a key global player, highlighting economic and political breakthroughs so impressive they have been called 'miracles.' She links these accomplishments to Taiwan's determined society, vibrant culture, and unique history. Drawing on arts, economics, politics, and international relations, Rigger explores Taiwan's importance to China, the United States, and the world. Considering where Taiwan may be headed in its wary standoff with China, she traces how the focus of Taiwan's domestic politics has shifted to a Taiwan-centered strategy. All readers interested in Asia and international affairs, as well as travelers to the region, will find this an accessible and entertaining overview, replete with human interest stories and colorful examples of daily life in Taiwan.

Contents: Sophisms of Protection - First Series Sophisms of Protection - Second Series Spoliation and Law Capital and Interest From the 1869 preface: "In combating, by arguments and illustrations adapted to the comprehension of the mass of mankind, the errors and sophisms with which protectionists deceive themselves and others, M. Bastiat is the most lucid and pointed of all writers on economical science with whose works I have any acquaintance. It is not necessary to accord him a place among the architects of the science of political economy, although some of his admirers rank him among the highest. The Indian Pacific rolling through Mt Lawley Station.
I considered taking the Indian Pacific to Sydney for a trip I'm doing next year. It turns out that the two options are...
1: Pay slightly more than the price of an economy airline ticket to sit in an airline style seat for five days straight.
2: Pay several thousand dollars for a sleeper berth.
I'm going by plane.

One positive side-effect of the recent financial market meltdown that toppled giant, century-old institutions and cost millions their jobs is that it created a strong desire among many Americans to better understand how the U.S. economy functions. In The Little Book of Economics, Greg, Ip, one of the country’s most recognized and respected economics journalists, walks readers through how the economy really works.
Written for the inquisitive layman who doesn’t want to plow through academic jargon and Greek letters or pore over charts and tables, The Little Book of Economics offers indispensible insight into how the American economy works – or, doesn’t. With engaging and accessible prose, the book
Provides a comprehensive understanding of each aspect of our economy from inflation and unemployment to international trade and finance
Serves as an insider’s guide to the people and institutions that control America’s economy such as the Federal Reserve and the federal budget
Explains the roots of America’s current economic crisis and the risks the country faces in its aftermath, such as stratospheric government debt, while offering advice on overcoming these threats
Walks readers through the basic concepts and terminology they need to understand economic news
Punctures myths and political spin from both the left and the right with candid and often surprising insight
A must read for anyone who wants a better grasp of the economy without taking a course in economics , The Little Book of Economics is a unique and engaging look at how the economy works in all its wonderful and treacherous ways.

Obama at the Tel Aviv Beach
I walk on the Tel Aviv beach to begin each day and take Obama with me,
I'm sure he would love it if he had the time, but at the moment he has other things on his mind.
Here, far away from American politics, wearing him on my chest led to some great conversations. There's an exciting local election with a reformer they call Dovbama.
Can't wait to get home and join the political excitement.

Practical Zionism in the Mandate era (1920-1948) is usually associated with agricultural settlements (kibbutzim), organized socialist workers, and the creation of a formal high culture. This book fills a gap in historical research by presenting a different type of practical Zionism in Jewish Palestine--urban, middle-class, and created by popular and informal daily practices. While research on Tel Aviv has so far been confined to "positivist" historical description or focused nostalgically on local myths, Helman's book reconstructs and analyzes the city's formative decades on various levels, juxtaposing historical reality with cultural images and ideological doctrines. Topics include the city's physical portrait, major public events, consumer culture, patterns of leisure and entertainment, and urban subcultures.

Shall We Dance?
SHALL WE DANCE - DVD Movie
On his evening commute, bored accountant Sugiyama (Koji Yakusho) always looks for the beautiful woman who gazes wistfully out the window of the Kishikawa School of Dancing. One night he gets off the train, walks into the studio, and signs up for a class. Soon Sugiyama is so engrossed in his dancing he practices his steps on the train platform and under his desk, and becomes good enough for competition, compelling his wife to hire a private investigator to find out why he stays out late and returns home smelling of perfume. Among the colorful characters Sugiyama meets is his coworker Aoki (Naoto Takenaka), who transforms himself from geeky systems analyst to hilariously flamboyant (and bad-wigged) lounge lizard. Aoki explains to Sugiyama, "When I finish work, put on the clothes, the wig and become Donny Burns, Latin world champion, and I start to move to the rhythm, I'm so happy, so completely free." Here lies the chief charm of Shall We Dance, the contrast between the ultracompetitive women of the studio--including the one who caught Sugiyama's eye, Mai (Tamiyo Kusakari)--and the men who dance simply because they enjoy it. This 1996 film is somewhat comparable to the flamboyant Aussie favorite Strictly Ballroom, but Shall We Dance is especially noteworthy for contrasting the boldness of social dance with the buttoned-up societal mores of Japan, where people avoid public displays of emotion. Even in Japan, the joy of dance is irresistible. --David Horiuchi

At Amsterdam Schiphol. Where do you want to go today?
The good thing about being a planespotter is waiting at the aiport doesn't bother me. Perhaps I could have seen a place or two in Amsterdam, but decided that I would like to visit Schiphol Airport's famous Panorama Terrace, where people can watch the many planes arrive and leave.
My flight was scheduled to leave AMS at 13:55 and I got to the airport at 09:39!

A view on my personal TV from the tail-mounted camera on Iberia Airbus A340-600 EC-JOH while descending towards Madrid Barajas from New York JFK. In my opinion, the best source of in-flight entertainment after a real window.
This aircraft skidded off the runway while landing in Quito, Ecuador on November 9th, 2007. While only five minor injuries were reported of the 333 passengers aboard, the aircraft suffered extensive damage to its left wing and landing gear and subsequently was written off, making it the first new generation A340 (A340-500/-600) to be sent to the scrapyard.

Guyana (Bradt Travel Guide Guyana)
South America’s often overlooked English-speaking country lies far off the well-trodden tourist path. Guyana is the ideal destination for the discerning visitor seeking adventure. Within its vast interior, the Guiana Shield (one of the four pristine tropical rainforests left in the world) converges with the Amazon Basin, creating a unique geography composed of coastal waters, mangroves, marshes, savannas, mountains and tropical rainforests.
Bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean, the lively locals ? a melting pot of East Indian and African descendants, peppered with Chinese, Europeans and Amerindians ? create a culture decidedly more Caribbean than Latin.

American Flamingo
The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a large species of flamingo closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo. It was formerly considered conspecific with the Greater Flamingo, but that treatment is now widely viewed (e.g. by the American and British Ornithologists' Unions) as incorrect due to a lack of evidence. It has also been known as the Caribbean Flamingo, but the species' presence in the Galapagos makes that name problematic.
The American Flamingo breeds in the Galapagos Islands, coastal Colombia, Venezuela and nearby islands, besides the Guyanas and Cape Orange in Brazil. It also breeds in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, and in the northern Caribbean in the Bahamas, Hispaniola, Cuba and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Most sightings in southern Florida are usually considered to be escapees, although at least one bird banded as a chick in the Yucatan Peninsula has been sighted in Everglades National Park, and others may be genuine wanderers from Cuba.
American Flamingos Phoenicopterus ruber American Flamingos with dilute coloring, in Lago de Oviedo, Dominican Republic.
Its preferred habitats are similar to that of its relatives: saline lagoons, mudflats, and shallow brackish coastal or inland lakes. Like all flamingos, it lays a single chalky white egg on a mud mound, between May and August; incubation until hatching takes from 28 to 32 days; both parents brood the young for a period of up to 6 years when they reach sexual maturity. Their life expectancy of 40 years is one of the longest in birds.
The American Flamingo is 120–140 cm (47–55 in) in length; males weigh 2.8 kg (6.2 lb) and females 2.2 kg (4.9 lb) kg. Most of its plumage is pink, giving rise to its earlier name of Rosy Flamingo and differentiating adults from the much paler Greater Flamingo. The wing coverts are red, and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black. It is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America.
The bill is pink and white with a restricted black tip, and the legs are entirely pink. The call is a goose-like honking.
The American Flamingo is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

The Making of Guyana.Guyana's rich culture mosaic is the legacy of the British plantation's economy, which after the abolition of slavery brought many indentured workers from British India, Indonesia, and China. They joined the descendants of African slaves, a large Jewish community, a European and Middle Eastern business and professional elite and the remnants indigenous Arawak and Carib people. Dutch, Hindustani, Hakka, Mandarin, and Javanese are also spoken. In Guyana English is the medium of exchange. Hindi and Urdu are only used for religious purposes by Hindus and Muslims. His Excellency, Bharrat Jegdeo, the President of Guyana is trying his best to expand and make Guyana a better place to live between East Indians and Africans. Bless him for all of his doings!

Flight of the Phoenix
An action-adventure in which a group of air crash survivors - cast-offs from society who will never be missed - are stranded in the Mongolian desert with no hope of rescue. As they attempt to build a new plane from the wreckage of the old one, in hopes of flying back to civilization, they experience a rebirth of their own.
As superfluous remakes go, Flight of the Phoenix could've been better, and could've been worse. It's a passable popcorn adventure, especially for those unfamiliar with the 1965 original, which starred James Stewart, made headlines for the crash-landing death of stunt-pilot Paul Mantz, and now stands as a minor classic of its era. This flashy remake stars Dennis Quaid in Stewart's role, adds a woman to the list of plane-crash survivors, and showcases Giovanni Ribisi, who gives a cleverly eccentric performance as the model-airplane designer who proposes to rebuild a crashed cargo plane into a single-engine escape from certain death in the remote Gobi desert. Both films are essentially identical, but this remake is somehow less believable (due to shortcuts in a haphazardly written screenplay) and much more spectacular, owing to the advantage of impressive special effects. Otherwise it's a routine dose of survivalist entertainment from the director of Behind Enemy Lines, never convincing enough to be genuinely compelling, but certainly never boring. --Jeff Shannon

departing from Vancouver at 12.45pm, these few images taken about half an hour or so after departing Vancouver.
Looking at Bellingham, Bellingham Bay and Lummi Island. Which is the long skinny island in the middle of the image. We would have come thru here on the M/V Columbia (Alaska Marine Highway Ferry) traveling south from Ketchikan to Bellingham. The Ferry travels to the west of Lummi Island, down around the Three Rocks area (south side) and then back up into Bellingham Bay.
There are many mountains in the background: Lookout Mountain, Anderson Mountain, Stewart Mountain etc.

Follow five snowboarding icons (Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Terje Haakonsen, Shawn Farmer and Nick Perata) on this epic Alaskan journey as they ride the most challenging and dangerous mountains on the planet. Featuring some of the most jaw-dropping snowboard footage ever caught on film, this incredible motion picture tracks the rebellious, inspiring and sometimes controversial evolution of snowboarding from an underground American movement to a full-fledged global phenomenon.
Talk about good timing (and shrewd marketing): the release of First Descent, a thrilling documentary about the snowboarding phenomenon, exactly coincided with the 2006 Winter Olympics, where some of the very same athletes featured in the film mined gold and glory on the slopes near Turin, Italy. But while Shaun White and Hannah Teeter both won gold medals in the halfpipe as the U.S. dominated the Olympic competition, those two young stars (along with three other snowboarding "legends") are seen in a far different environment in producer-directors Kevin Harrison and Kemp Curley's 111-minute film, tackling some dauntingly long, steep runs in the mountains of Valdez, Alaska, where avalanches, crevasses, and other hazards await as they search for "first descents" (i.e., places no snowboarder has been before) in that pristine, forbidding environment. As advertised, the footage is, well, awesome, as all five riders catch huge air on some of the gnarliest runs in the world; Norwegian Terje Haakonsen's final plunge from a 7,000 foot peak with a 60 degree drop must be seen to be believed. Elsewhere, First Descent chronicles the evolution of the snowboarding phenomenon, from its humble emergence in the 1970s, when the sport was derided by traditional skiers, to its extraordinary popularity in the '90s and beyond, when the X Games and Olympics telecasts brought it into living rooms across America, Europe, and Japan. Profiles of the individual athletes are included as well, but it's the Alaska footage--where, in the words of 'boarder Shawn Farmer, they "pinned it to the wall and threw down"--that's the principal attraction here. Nearly an hour's worth of extra features will add to the appeal of the film, which features narration by former Black Flag-bearer Henry Rollins and music by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. --Sam Graham

Angels Flight
An activist attorney is killed in a cute little L.A. trolley called Angels Flight, far from Harry Bosch's Hollywood turf. But the case is so explosive--and the dead man's enemies inside the L.A.P.D. are so numerous--that it falls to Harry to solve it. Now the streets are superheating. Harry's year-old Vegas marriage is unraveling. And the hunt for a killer is leading Harry to another high-profile L.A. murder case, one where every cop had a motive. The question is, did any have the guts?
Michael Connelly, whose novel The Poet won the 1997 Anthony Award for Best Mystery, is already recognized as one of the smartest and most vivid scribes of the hard-boiled police procedural. Now, with his much-anticipated sixth Harry Bosch novel, Angels Flight, Connelly offers one of the finest pieces of mystery writing to appear in 1998. Bosch is awakened in the middle of the night and, out of rotation, he is assigned to the murder investigation of the high-profile African American attorney Howard Elias. When Bosch arrives at the scene, it seems that almost the entire LAPD is present, including the IAD (the Internal Affairs Division). Elias, who made a career out of suing the police, was sadistically gunned down on the Angels Flight tram just as he was beginning a case that would have struck the core of the department; not surprisingly, L.A.'s men and women in blue become the center of the investigation. Haunted by the ghost of the L.A. riots, plagued by incessant media attention, and facing turmoil at home, Bosch suddenly finds himself questioning friends and associates while working side by side with some longtime enemies.
Angels Flight is a detective's nightmare scenario and is disturbingly relevant to the racially tense last decade of the 20th century. Amidst the twists and turns of his complex narrative, Connelly affirms his rightful place among the masters of contemporary mystery fiction. --Patrick O'Kelley

First Flight
On December 17, 1903, at 10:30 am at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, this airplane arose for a few seconds to make the first powered, heavier-than-air controlled flight in history. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and flew a distance of 120 feet. Orville Wright piloted the historic flight while his brother, Wilbur, observed. The brothers took three other flights that day, each flight lasting longer than the other with the final flight going a distance of 852 feet in 59 seconds. This flight was the culmination of a number of years of research on gliders.
Orville and Wilbur Wright's curiosity with flight began in 1878 when their father, Milton, gave them a rubber band powered toy helicopter. Although they were never formally educated, the self-taught engineers constantly experimented with kites and gliders. Bicycle shop owners by occupation, the brothers spent years designing, testing and redesigning their gliders and planes. After the successful flights of December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur continued to perfect their plane. In 1909 the Army Signal Corps purchased a Wright Flyer, creating the first military airplane. Although Wilbur passed away May 30, 1912, from typhoid fever, Orville remained an active promoter of aviation until his death on January 30, 1948.
The Air Age truly began with that historic flight on December 17, 1903. In 1908 the Wright Brothers designed the first military aircraft for the Army Signal Corps. Seven years later, in 1915, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) became the nations leading aviation research organization, of which Orville was a member for 28 years. As the airplane became more aerodynamic and technically advanced, its uses expanded into many different directions. Military aircraft played significant roles in both World War I and World War II. The airplane made worldwide travel and exploration possible.
Male snail kite in flight with an apple snail, Lake Toho, Kissimmee, Florida, CA
Taken by Canon 1D Mark IV and Canon 500mm F4 handheld.
Ever since I first saw a snail kite photo in the internet, I was deeply attracted and told myself I got to photograph them one day. Their sharp red eyes, red and black beak, dark grey color and white strip tail all look super cool to me.
So there, I was on Jim's boat on Lake Toho in Florida when we saw the male snail kite carrying a big apple snail and he is without a band. At first he was flying in an area with the sky background. But luckily he turned suddenly and banked with a beautiful green cattail field as background. Was lucky to get a few shots before he changed his pose and hide the snail from our sight.
Taken with a Canon 1D Mark IV, 500mm F4, ISO 400, F5.6, 1/2000s, manual exposure, handheld.

The Flight has a hollow-ground blade manufactured using 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, which is similar to Aus-8 in its properties, performance and function. 8Cr13MoV steel contains both molybdenum and vanadium. Molybdenum enhances the strength and hardness of the steel, vanadium its wear resistance and toughness. Carbon augments the steel's tensile strength and increases its resistance to wear and abrasion. Resulting from this recipe is blade steel that retains a sharp cutting edge over time and use. Most byrds are available with a olain or combination plain/serrated cutting edge. The "comet" shaped opening hole is a trademark of the byrd line and is synonymous with the stringent quality requirements, high performance materials and manufacturing, which go into every knife. Fully stainless handles have a sequence of ergonomic curves that fit into the palm for comfort and fatigue-free control while cutting. For additional safety, a portion of the lock release is ground away. This is a design add-on conceived by custom knifemaker David Boye and eliminates the chance of gripping the knife tightly enough to unintentionally release the lock. All byrds feature a pocket clip that clips the knife inside a pocket and it attaches to either end of the folder for tip-up or tip-down right-hand carry.
