Baseball Bathroom Decor
Baseball Cards Baseball cards from the 1950s and 60s, back when the teams were not all the same as we know today. The old St. Browns had become the Baltimore Orioles, but the Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants were still in New York. The Philadelphia Athletics had moved to Kansas City but had not yet gone all the way to Oakland on the west coast. Milwaukee's team was the Braves and the Cincinnati team temporarily changed their name from the Reds to the Redlegs as a result of Senator Joe McCarthy's communist witch hunt. A new expansion team in Houston was called the Colt 45s; it would be a couple of more years before their new domed stadium opened and they would change their name to the Astros. As kids, we would play various games by flipping baseball cards. The two most popular were "Heads & Tails" and "Touchies." Heads & Tails was best for two players. The first kid would hold his card with one edge on the tip of his thumb and the other edge on the tips of his fingers. Then, he would flip the card onto the ground. The second player would do likewise and try to land heads or tails to match the first card. The winner would take possession of both cards. A match (i.e., two heads or two tails) would go to the second player; a mismatch (one head and one tail) would go to the first player. The odds of winning were pretty even and although many individual cards might change hands, both players would usually end up with approximately as many cards as they started out with. Touchies was a game for any number of players. Players would hold their card by the corner and, taking turns standing behind the playing line, would flip it much like throwing a frisbee. The object was to have your card land touching one of the previously thrown cards. At first players would throw their cards as far and as scattered as they could to make it difficult for the next players to touch their cards. But eventually someone, either by accident or design, would land a card close to the playing line. Then each player, in turn, would try to touch the easy mark before any one else. As the number of close in cards accumulated in greater numbers, someone would eventually touch another card and win the pot. The winner took all the cards that had been played. In this game large numbers of cards could change hands and some kids could get wiped out. Needless to say there were various strategies to flipping baseball cards. Everyone wanted a Mickey Mantle, but few kids ever got one in their pack of bubble gum cards. However, there was always some kid, usually a stranger on another block, who was lucky enough to get several duplicates. If you were lucky enough to have a card of a favorite player, you might not want to risk it in a game of Heads & Tails. But if you were down to your last few cards in a game of Touchies, and the potential winnings included a really big pot, you might risk that Mickey Mantle or Warren Spahn after all. Heads & Tails was pretty straight forward, but as you can imagine there were frequent disputes in Touchies as to just how close a card might be without actually touching another. This double rocker switch plate measures 4 ?” long and 4 ?” wide. Included are extra long mounting screws color coordinated to complement the colors of this handcrafted mosaic light switch cover. Decorating Kids Rooms On A Budget
Dad On A Tree Bucket Truck Lift - Felt Mansion Volunteer, Saugatuck, Michigan - 2003 The Felt Mansion grounds in the midst of land redevelopment. In 2003 when the township decided to go ahead with this restoration projects, many dedicated volunteers who gave much extraordinary time and labor toward restoration efforts and have ever since with their love of this magical, mystical, and breathtalking place. In the beginning, my rugged father and Mr. Roger Vander Velden began the enormous task of clearing out decades long growth of overgrown bushes, trees, and brush that were never planted on the grounds when this incredible place was built. In the early years, just after it was built, the grounds were covered with beautiful grass and landscaped foliage. There is also a large stone fountain and cement stair steps winding down the hill toward the carriage house and tennis court. The grounds are now, once again, near its former glory, thanks to the early volunteers, such as Mr. Vander Velden, (a lovely human being) became a great friend to my father. Roger's enthusiasm was admirable and his contributions were enormous. In is '80's, he was still a vibrant man. To our great regret, he succumbed rather quickly to cancer in 2004. A plaque was put in place to recognize Roger and his work. Along with many other people, including kids from the local Black River School, assisted them (a GREAT deal) clear out sections of overgrown trees and wild brush. Along with my father and Roger, they cut up countless unattractive trees and brush and removed it from the premises. The also did the enormous task of carrying and construction the rock wall lining the hill (can be seen here). Dad supervised the clearing effort, and along with his friends and crew, paved the way for further detailed landscaping that resulted in with beautiful grounds that are there today. After his work was finished, he departed as a volunteer, due to a conflict of interest with the administration director (whew, she's another story). Others were chosen by the administrator of the project to carry on with the finishing touches. I must say, as nice as the grounds look, they could look better; I believe there is room for improvement. Prior to the clearing effort, the front of the mansion was completely blocked from view. As a result of the blockage, many people, throughout the decades, thought that the back of the structure was actually the front, as this was the only visible area. Now, when you drive up the entrance road, this appears on the horizon. It was not visible before, in the least. I feel compelled to give tribute to my father's enormous efforts and give him and reiterate the recognition they deserve. This took many hard working man ours to accomplish, which he did on many scorching days in the sun. There are many volunteers who have toiled and spent many hours to restore this beautiful place, who also deserve more recognition. Many different volunteers have redecorated many of the countless rooms, restoring walls, ceilings, fire place mantles, woodwork, and more. These make the interior look just right and as lovely as it once was. Incidentally, the four bathrooms still retain the original Art Deco era tile, flooring and fixtures none of which have ever been altered. The rooms that were left untouched are amazing. The third story is a ballroom. I also have pictures, on my stream of an old and very large water well that was built on a wooded dune are in the nearby Saugatuck Dunes state Park. I have pictures of this on my stream. Many different, well intentioned people decorated many of the empty rooms and although well done, do not look authentic. However, even the overall project manager, allowe this and does not a have full understanding on how these rooms (not all) could be professionally restored, in such a manner that the designs and furnishings should match the original architecture and interior. I should not be critical, I suppose, but I am am passionate about accurate renovation of structures, inside and out. I do realize that the volunteers who were chosen to decorate various rooms, gave much time and money in executing their visions of what these rooms should look like. I guess it is enough that these have been spruced up; details can always be changed by knowledgeable period experts, sometime in the future. That is if anyone in control of the future funding budget, can realize the importance of keeping landmarks authentic. So this house, standing alone, near the Saugatuc State Park, is the stunning legacy of Mr Dorr. E Felt . He spared no expense on this magnificent retreat. This building was used for a number of purposes over the years before the state of Michigan obtained the property from the previous owners and occupants. The mansion and grounds were originally purchased from the Felt children and became the property of the Western Theological Seminary, who used it for many years. They erected a large building on the grounds to use for the Catholic school. The house was a residence used to house the nuns. Hungarian State Opera House The Hungarian State Opera House (Hungarian: Magyar A?llami Operaha?z) is a neo-Renaissance opera house located in central Pest, (a part of Budapest), on Andra?ssy u?t. Designed by Miklo?s Ybl, a major figure of 19th century Hungarian architecture, the construction lasted from 1875 to 1884 and was funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The Hungarian Royal Opera House (as it was known then) opened to the public on the September 27, 1884. It is a richly-decorated building and is considered one of the architect's masterpieces. It was built in neo-Renaissance style, with elements of baroque. Ornamentation includes paintings and sculptures by leading figures of Hungarian art of the time including Bertalan Sze?kely, Mo?r Than and Ka?roly Lotz. Although in size and capacity it is not among the greatest, in beauty and the quality of acoustics the Budapest Opera House is considered to be amongst the first few opera houses in the world. The auditorium holds 1261 seats. It is horseshoe shaped and - according to measurments done in the 1970s by a group of international engineers - has the 3rd best acoustics in Europe after the Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera House. Although many opera houses have been built since, the Budapest Opera House is still among the best in terms of the acoustics. In front of the building are statues of Ferenc Erkel, composer of the Hungarian national anthem, and the first music director of the Opera House. He was also founder of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. The other statue is of Franz Liszt, the best known Hungarian composer. Each year the season lasts from September to the end of June and besides opera performances the Opera House is home to the Hungarian National Ballet. Many important artists were guests here including Gustav Mahler the composer who was director in Budapest from 1887 to 1891 and Otto Klemperer who was music director for three years from 1947 to 1950. In the 1970s the state of the building prompted the Hungarian State to order a major renovation which eventually began in 1980 and lasted till 1984. The reopening was held exactly 100 years after the original opening, on the 27th of September 1984. The Opera House is on the left in this view of 1896. All the LCF's were similar and varied only in minor decor put there by the Facility Managers. NJ - Jersey City: Old Bergen Church The Old Bergen Church, at 1 Highland Avenue, is home to the longest continuous congregation in New Jersey, dating to the settlers of the village of Bergen in 1660. The third and present structure serving the congregation was built in 1841 and dedicated on July 14, 1842. It stands one hundred yards from the site of the earlier two buildings. The Greek Revival style one-story structure features a full-length portico with post supported by six columns in front of a brownstone facade. It was built by William H. Kirk and Company and Clark and Van Nest of Newark, New Jersey. In the center of the facade is the church tablet of white marble on black marble and inserted cornerstone. Also from the facade, two doors open to the vestibule. Stone from the 1773 church is embedded in the south wall of the church. Atop the church is a wooden belfry. Below the eave is a wooden facia around the roof line. The interior has a balcony and features mahogany decor. The stained glass windows reveal the benefactors and founding members of the congregation and community. They were contributed by the Van Reypen, Newkirk, Van Horne, Sip, and Van Winkle families, among others. An original signed Louis Tiffany stained glass window is in the sanctuary. Until the early nineteenth century, church records and sermons were preserved in Dutch. In 1900 a Sunday school was added at the northwest corner. A Memorial Chapel, constructed in 1959, honors the men and women of the congregation who served in the military during World War II. A meeting room, named for the Reverend Dr. Cornelius Brett (1876-1916) built in 1924, contains artifacts from the earlier churches. Among the items are two communion cups made from silver by Hendrikus Boele in 1730. They have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1970, the Old Bergen Church and the Trinity United Presbyterian Church formed a union. The Trinity Church, which served the same area of Jersey City, was an outgrowth of the merger of the First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1809) and the Westminster Presbyterian Church (founded in 1869). The new federated church retains the name "Old Bergen" Church. Hollywood Theatre - 1935 3123 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC. The Hollywood Theatre is a success story in heritage — a great building that survives intact and still serves its original function. Located at 3123 West Broadway, the Hollywood opened on October 23, 1935. The exuberant stuccoed concrete facade, ticket booth, marquee and neon signage are all original — the small neon sign, “Pick o? The Best Plays,” recalls the days when movies were called “photoplays.” At the time of its construction, neighbourhood theatres were much more common than they are today. Typically these theatres were of a modest scale, and often in a mid-block location as they didn?t require the more expensive corner frontage. The Hollywood was designed by architect Harold Cullerne (1890-1976), who was born and trained in England. He arrived in Vancouver in 1912, and for many years was in partnership with J.H. Bowman. Upon Bowman?s retirement in 1934, Cullerne established his own practice. Cullerne was an accomplished designer who embraced the new modernism of the 1930s, as shown in the sleek lines and stylish decoration of the Hollywood. This is one of his more important surviving works, and it is listed on the City of Vancouver Heritage Register. At a time when we have lost so many of our small local theatres — or only their facade remains — the Hollywood is a true heritage treasure. It is particularly unusual in that it has survived in a single screen format, and is still operated by the family that built it. That Weird Bird-Bath Thing, Again After we signed all the paperwork on Monday I made sure to take a closer shot of this thing on the wall, which I've been getting a lot of comments on. It's pretty cute, though it's for putting your landline on (phone jack is directly below) so it will probably just turn into a resting place for cell phones, keys and the like. I could see a small plant in the mix, too, but Felix would probably knock it over. Seashell No invites, please! Since it is a rainy day here, decided to play around with a small seashell I picked up the other day. This is a periwinkle, I think. It is a little under an inch long. Couldn't get it in at full macro, so it is at 1.2:1 macro. Shot on a piece of first surface mirror, using flash to darken the background. The largest size is about half of the original size. VINTAGE GLASS NEGATIVE 13 Two young women, fast asleep. They may be siblings and part of the family in the Victorian household where they live, or perhaps servants. The household is well-to-do: the bed linen is freshly pressed and the bedspread is of obvious quality, as are their nightdresses. On the bedside table is a wash bowl, hairbrush and toothbrush along with a candle stub, snuffer and matches. Lace curtains are at the window and the room is papered rather than having plain whitewashed walls. I would date the photograph at the turn of the last century, around 1900. This image is a low resolution version of the original negative, captured photographically rather than with a scanner. Half plate size; dry plate process. Encaustic Wax Painting 'Rocket Before Launch' This is an original encaustic painting. Created on a wooden plaque, it measures approximately 7X7 inches, with a depth of 3/4 inch. Space! I can't stop playing with these images. Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia La Sagrada Familia (Catalan) or La Sagrada Familia (Spanish) is a large Roman Catholic basilica under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The formal title of the basilica is the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia or Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family. It is the last, and perhaps most extraordinary, of the designs of the Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. The geographical location of La Sagrada Familia is 41°24?13?N, 2°10?28?E. The Sagrada Familia was planned in the late 19th century and construction work, under the supervison of Antoni Gaudi, commenced in the 1880s. After disagreements between the founding association and the original architect Francesco del Villar, Gaudi was assigned the project in 1883 and created an entirely new design. At first, the basilica stood in an empty field over a mile away from urban Barcelona. Gaudi worked on the project for over 40 years, devoting the last 15 years of his life entirely to this endeavour; on the subject of the extremely long construction, Gaudi is said to have joked, "My client is not in a hurry." Work was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1935 and recommenced in the 1950s, after the end of World War II. Gaudi died in 1926. Parts of the unfinished building and Gaudi's models and workshop were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War by anarchists. The design, as now being constructed, is based both on reconstructed versions of the lost plans and on modern adaptations. Since 1940 the architects Francesc Quintana, Isidre Puig Boada, and Lluis Gari have carried on the work. Sculptures by J. Busquets and the controversial Josep Subirachs decorate the fantastical facades. Every part of the design of La Sagrada Familia is rich with Christian symbolism, as Gaudi intended the church to be the "last great sanctuary of Christendom." Its most striking aspect are its spindle-shaped towers. A total of 18 tall towers are called for, representing in ascending order of height the 12 Apostles, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and, tallest of all, Jesus Christ. (According to the 2005 "Works Report" of the temple's official website, drawings signed by Gaudi found recently in the Municipal Archives indicate that the tower of the Virgin was in fact intended by Gaudi to be shorter than those of the evangelists, and this is the design -- which the Works Report states is more compatible with the existing foundations -- that will be followed. The same source explains the symbolism in terms of Christ being known through the evangelists.) The evangelists' towers will be surmounted by sculptures of their traditional symbols: a bull (St. Luke), an angel (St. Matthew), an eagle (St. John), and a lion (St. Mark). The central tower of Jesus Christ is to be surmounted by a giant cross; the tower's total height will be one metre less than that of Montjuic, as Gaudi believed that his work should not surpass that of God. The lower towers are surmounted by bunches of grapes, representing spiritual fruit. The church will have three grand facades: the Nativity (eastern) facade, the Glory facade (yet to be completed), and the Passion (western) facade. The Nativity facade was built before work was interrupted in 1935 and bears the most direct Gaudi influence. The Passion facade is especially striking for its spare, gaunt, tormented characters, including emaciated figures of Christ being flogged and on the crucifix. These controversial designs are the work of Josep Subirachs. Sculpture of Christ and doors of the Passion facade. The towers on the Nativity facade are crowned with geometrically shaped tops that were probably influenced by Cubism (they were finished around 1920). The intricate decoration is loosely related the style of Art Nouveau but reflects Gaudi's unique ideas. Themes throughout the decoration include words from the liturgy. The towers are decorated with words such as "Hosanna," "Excelsis," and "Sanctus;" the great doors of the Passion facade reproduce words from the Bible in various languages including Catalan; and the Glory facade is to be decorated with the words from the Apostles' Creed. Areas of the sanctuary will be designated to represent various concepts, such as saints, virtues, sins, and secular concepts such as regions of Spain, presumably with decoration to match. The building works are expected to be complete around 2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death, although the likelihood of meeting this date is disputed. Computer modelling has been used for the detailed design of the intricate structure of supporting columns inside the basilica. See also catenary. CAD/CAM technology has been used to speed up the construction of the building; initially, the construction work was expected to last for several hundred years, based on building techniques available in the early 1900s. Spongebob I made this cake yesterday morning for my Son's Birthday party. I had designed a cake for him with more detail but ran out of time. Spongebob is made from rice crispies and covered in fondant. I actually made all the decorations the morning of the party. Shame on me! He loved it and told me it was beautiful. Thanks for looking!
