Week 51: Henný

This is Henny Sigurjonsdottir, 27 and lives in Reykjavik, in my (our?) apartment actually. She is the mother of the prettiest two children you?ll ever see and the best looking makeup artist you?ll ever encounter. She?s my wife for the last 5 years and if everything goes according to plan, for the next 500 years as well, provided we both live that long.

We decided to do this shot very early in the week as everyone is up to their ears in christmas preparations and Eva Hronn, Hennys friend, got to decide what we were going to do and did all the makeup on Henny. Well she pulled up this image of Angelina Jolie wich actually didn?t look a whole lot like this shot, beside the blood and the crazy/hungry eye expression.

Lighting is just two lights with this one, really blew out the backround with one light and had a big softbox behind me (you can see my silhouette in her eyes) straight on Hennys face. Decided to use the 50mm lens I don?t often use anymore in the studio, but I wanted to get real close and get that "in your face" look. Really wish I had seen that photo of Angelina beforehand though as I would have borrowed a ringlight, that would have been perfect to light this shot but c?est la vie.

Only one week to go now, anyone care to guess who I am going to photograph for the last week? Who is missing from this series...

Historic Fort Pitt Blockhouse

The Block House was constructed in 1764 as a small military redoubt intended to provide enhanced defense of Fort Pitt against Indian attacks. As hostilities with Native populations subsided, the need for defense of the Forks of the Ohio at Pittsburgh was greatly reduced. The British abandoned Fort Pitt in 1772 and the installation evolved into a trading center with the Block House serving as the headquarters of a local Indian Agent. Troops were again garrisoned at the fort during the American Revolution, but by 1785 the fort and its buildings, excepting the Block House, were sold and dismantled for the valuable building material contained therein.

The relatively short and uneventful military use of the Block House gave way to a century-long domestic period when the structure served as a dwelling for early residents of Pittsburgh. During this time, alterations were made to the building that included the opening of doors and windows for the comfort and convenience of its occupants. It is clear that those residents recognized the significance of the site as history records that the generations of families living there hosted visitors and dignitaries wishing to tour the only remains of Fort Pitt. Predictably, however, the age of the building, the lack of resources with which to maintain it and the squalid conditions that grew up around it took its toll such that, by the time the Pittsburgh Chapter acquired it in 1894, it was a dilapidated ruin with little chance of survival.

After 16 months of restoration that involved the removal of ramshackle additions, the infilling of window and door openings and the repair of aging timbers, the Block House was opened to the public as a Museum of the Colonial Era. The efforts of the Pittsburgh Chapter and the pride they took in preserving the Block House were rewarded with praise and accolades from Pittsburgh’s civic and cultural leaders, historians of the period and travelers who continued to visit the site.

Though the first half of the 20th century structural repairs and cosmetic updates were sporadically made to the Block House as needed, but a methodical conservation program was never fully implemented owing to limitations in the field of historic preservation and the inexperience of the site’s curators. In the 1950s, the area surrounding the Block House was transformed from an industrial site in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh to the 36-acre Point State Park which highlighted the historic aspects of the Point at Pittsburgh. Portions of Fort Pitt were reconstructed to offer interpretation of the significance of the site and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania constructed the Fort Pitt Museum within 90 feet of the Block House. This state owned and administered facility, with greater resources and a larger venue, gradually overshadowed the Block House in terms of the history it could impart to the public. After 40 years of competition, the Block House was perceived by many to be a reconstruction with little to offer except bricks and mortar. What had been for decades the only remnant of Fort Pitt was - at the turn of the 21st century – an often overlooked and secondary destination for visitors.

In December 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources began a $25 million dollar plan to renovate 40-year old Point State Park. The plans called for improving green spaces, expanding recreational opportunities, replacing the outdated infrastructure and expanding the historic interpretation of the Point. A major portion of the park’s restoration was to be completed by October 2008 in order to dovetail with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Pittsburgh’s founding in 1758.

Simultaneously, and in compliance with its mandate to preserve, protect and promote the Fort Pitt Block House, the Pittsburgh Chapter NSDAR undertook the revitalization of the Block House and its surrounding property. The decision to embark on a major update to the property was driven primarily by the anticipated attention on the Block House as Pittsburgh’s oldest architectural landmark during the Pittsburgh 250 celebrations. Notwithstanding some necessary cosmetic updates to the property’s landscaping, the Block House was also in need of conservation efforts that would preserve the original fabric of the structure.

The focus of the restoration was in the replacement of the shakes and decking of the roof; although, attention was paid to the whole building in terms of evaluation, conservation, repair and interpretation. The preservation work involved stabilization of deteriorating timbers with appropriate materials, the reconstruction of disintegrated members with sympathetic elements, and the resetting and repointing of bricks and foundation stones with historically correct mortar. The conservation was overseen and documented by an historic preservation specialist and all work was done in accordance with the preservation standards set by the Secretary

Cosmetic Smudging

I used only the contents of my make-up bag to make this- foundations, concealers, powders, cream blush, mascara & lipstick as well a silver eyeliner, which doesn't show in the photo- the inky blotches are from my bottle of Benetint....I collaged in a mouth and eye- they seemed to fit and the word Glam- albeit meant slightly ironically.

Me, me, and me...

Sooo... I was tagged by three lovely ladies a bit over a week ago (Anna~Karin, Joanne, and Gosia) and I'm only now getting to writing 16 things about myself.

I'll try to make it interesting ;)

1. I'm left-handed and proud of it!

2. At age 8 I decided I wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. When that didn't pan out, I joined a college acrobatics team at age 10. I was a performing acrobat until age 16.

3. As an acrobat, I got to miss at least a month of school a year when 'on tour'. Perfect since I hated being in school, and LOVED to travel.

4. I've gotten three learner's permits, but never tried for my driver's license... that's a resolution for this year. Better 10 years late than never, right?

5. When I was 17 I dropped out of high school and started producing surrealistic (sometimes disturbing) acrylic paintings almost non-stop.

6. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder several years later (which probably explains fact #5).

7. I did my senior year of high school in 3 weeks via a home-study program (I procrastinated so long that I finished high school a week before going to college...oops).

8. I attended a prestigious art college for just over a month (see fact #5).

9. I have an obsession with eye makeup! I'm always searching for an unusual pigment of eyeshadow to add to my huge stash. I'm serious.

10. I've been wearing eye makeup nearly every day since I was eight years old. Currently my daily routine includes 7-10 shades of eyeshadow, liquid eye-liner, and, of course, blackest black mascara!

11. I started making my own jewelry so I could be sure that no one else could possibly wear the same thing as me.

12. I wear Klewism jewelry single day, all the time- except when I'm swimming, in the shower, or sleeping.

13. I listen to audiobooks all the time. Especially when I'm painting or making jewelry.

14. I love animals- cats! dogs! lemurs! sheep! llamas! hedgehogs! lions! tigers! & bears! OH MY...

15. I'm a night person: I get a burst of energy around 10 pm that lasts until about 4 am.

16. I love people, but I am completely content to be alone for long periods of time- I have an abundant capacity for self-amusement :p

Black eyeliner

A really lovely head shot of Belanah...I got into an argument with her father this weekend. I am her custodial parent..always have been. He's been out of the picture since she was 5 months old. Anyway, her stepmother decided that Belanah is an embarassment to her dad and their family because I allow her to wear eyeliner...black eyeliner. She told me that me allowing her to wear eyeliner is the same as her(the stepmother) pushing my daughter off the roof. She then said that people that wear black eyeliner end up pregnant and on drugs. Honestly...what the hell is this woman talking about? I modeled as a teenager and was doing runway shows when I was 14. Belanah is 13 and a half. I think she should be allowed to wear light tasteful makeup (she only uses eyeliner, mascara, and chapstick). Her father agreed with the stepmother and chose to give up seeing her anymore because I refuse to allow the stepmother around her. I gave him the option of visitation at my house (visitation is to my discretion according to my court papers) and he refused. Today, he called me and tried to tell me I had until tomorrow to give him the right to claim her on his taxes so I could get a bigger refund from him (he is over 13,000 behind in child support). I chose to refuse him, I consider it a bribe that he's trying to give me. I am reporting him to child support in the morning and letting them hear the message he sent me in a voice text. I am going to court again to have the judge look at my support order and hopefully issue the warrant for his arrest for non payment of child support. I want to make sure they hear the bribe, so that if he does claim her without my permission(and signature), they can prosecute him for that. Belanah says she's done with him. I don't blame her. Can you believe this whole thing started over black eyeliner?

I come second I went to school and get it, all hoping to arrive, nobody was only Pietra then we did nothing. Coming home to Pietra call me on msn and talk that would record the video at home and I said okay, Tuesday, I also went to school early but did not warn anyone because i was bad and wanted to talk to some friends of mine the morning. Fourth agent handed the video to Adriano, English teacher. Got a little crispy in some places, unfortunately, since I hadn't expected there to be that much of a breeze when I took off the bricks that had been keeping it flat... The single-digit humidity made it shrink up and crinkle a little.

Day 221: Fixations part 1

My 9th secret is this: I have a slight fixation with eyelashes.

I have an extensive collection of fake eyelashes. Mainly for one reason, my eye-lashes aren't that long. Throughout high-school I used to envy the girls who had long long lashes. The world record of that time must've been someone called Bidulah [who was a westernised Indian girl]. She had the most gorgeous lashes ever, breaking the record of nearly reaching 2cm!
Soph [who was one of the many girl's I used to hang around with back in highschool too] had long lashes too. But even she admitted to envying Bidulah's long lashes.

My lashes are relatively short. I blame being small-eyed and chinese [if I had larger eyes, my lashes would thus be a lot more longer to cover eyes! duh!] Sadly I picked up the bad genes.
And I, like many chinese small-eyed girls, have short lashes. And I simply make do with false eye-lashes. Only I never have much chance of wearing them [for someone who rarely wears makeup except for special occasions!]

I would say, throughout the many years in my life, or well, since teenage years. I have managed to get a nice collection of lashes. I believe there are more previously, but these things don't last for all eternity.

There's something about wearing lashes that make me feel more feminine. And seeing long lashes makes me think the person is beautiful. Not that I've got anything against short-lashes or people with short-lashes. Just it's nice to see someone with long long lashes... cos it's like woah!

Am I weird? Is this even normal? Hmm. So here's one of my secret obsessions revealed.

I've been told I have a "high maintenance" appearance - which sort of irks me, as I don't see myself as the type at all.

I'm pretty low key. I can be showered and out the door in five minutes if I have to be. So this morning, as I pulled products out to use them - I chunked them on the counter.

Hmm. I still don't think this qualifies as high maintenance.
