I chose to take inspiration from the african culture mainly tribal make up and owls. I definately could have been more creative with this but I'm pretty happy with it considering the short amount of time I had to do it

Antique Blue Venetian Glass Scent Bottle

I have an extensive collection of scent bottles. Most of them are Victorian but some are earlier or later in origin. It started with one small bottle I bought at a house contents sale in Montclair NJ.
When I was a kid, I used to buy Evening in Paris from the local five and ten cent store near my house. Funny I can still recall that fragrance. And yes, I have a few bottles still containing Evening In Paris in my collection. Evening In Paris was made by Bourjois who make cosmetics these days. I wish they would bring back that simple but lovely scent.

gaaye holud khela

Gaaye Holud or the Haldi Ceremony.
The young bride to be is traditionally bathed with a paste of turmeric, sandalwood, oil and milk (to ensure, I guess, a golden glowing complexion for the wedding!).
Nowadays the gaaye-holud or the smearing of turmeric to the body is more or less symbolic. The married women of the house as in older days first bless the young bride to be with the Boron Daala, wishing her health, wealth and happiness. Then the married women or the "Eyo"s begin the haldi ceremony with dabbing the turmeric on the bride. After this is done more or less to everyone's satisfaction, the real fun begins when all the women - married or unmarried have fun with smearing the pungent paste on each other!
Like I mentioned, it's more symbolic nowadays and instead of following this up with a time consuming bath with sandal and milk, soap and water suffices and is followed with the all obliterating makeover and bridal makeup at the parlour!!

"The film begins with the news of car accident suffered by Siddhartha when he was driving back home alone, after a late night. She argues with Shahana about all the girls who used to chase him in Delhi, Shahana confesses that she too had a crush on him. In her desperation to prove that Sid was really straight, she even calls Shahana up at night to announce that she found a packet of condoms in his cabinet, which she thinks is ultimate proof of his heterosexuality! (Proving how native and ignorant even educated people an be) Matters reach a head when Arati has a full - scale blow - up with Arnab, accusing him to having seduced her son. Later, she feels a deep sense of empathy with Arnab when she realizes how deeply he is suffering too. Shahana to feels a deep sense of loss; so much so that she decided to switch to another job and distance herself from her old workplace, so replete with memories of the dear departed.

When it’s ‘show time’ in Vegas, who will the Universe (or Trump) be conspiring for? by: Henrique Fontes

Whoever chooses Miss Universe (the judges, Donald Trump, the Universe itself) will certainly have a hard time this time. In a strong group with several standouts, there’s no consensus on who will walk away with the crown.

The second oldest and most traditional pageant on the globe, does not show the same glamour and enchantment of decades ago (girls selling lemonade wearing bikinis and high hills on the sidewalks of Las Vegas cannot be defined as “high class”, or “glamorous”…), but still, it remains the most exciting beauty dispute on the imaginary of thousands of pageant fans, especially in Latin American countries and in the Philippines.

It’s funny to visit the different “message boards” and see how the fans from different countries truly believe the candidates from their respective countries are the best, no questioning allowed! Nationalist feelings (or blindness) are common place in any kind of international competition, it’s true, but perhaps it becomes even more widespread when it comes to beauty pageants, after all, can an international competition be more of “anyone’s game” than a beauty contest??

Beauty can be found virtually everywhere!! Yes, there are countries with famous “beauty schools”, such as Venezuela (#1, no question asked), Colombia or Puerto Rico, but an island nation with a small population, like for instance Grenada, can send a marvellous candidate to Miss World or Miss Universe and walk away with the title (it actually happened in 1970, Miss Grenada was crowned Miss World that year!).

Trinidad & Tobago has two Misses Universes, Iceland won the Miss World title three times, Botswana beat the odds and was crowned Miss Universe 1999, and the current Miss World hails from tiny Gibraltar!!

With all that said, the obvious conclusion is that even though Miss Universe tends to favor its target market (Latin America), theoretically anything can happen on Monday night, and here is my take on what might happen, starting with the African candidates:

AFRICA

Two standouts come from Africa: South Africa and Ghana. Both have stunning faces and are included in most pageant observers’ lists of favorites. I see South Africa with an extra edge in the region, perhaps finishing in the top 10.

OCEANIA

Anything can happen with both Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand has its most competitive delegate in Miss Universe in ages, and Australia, although not a huge favorite, like last year’s Rachel Finn, did her homework in the Presentation Show and could take a spot in the top 15. If both make the cut, it will be well deserved. If they don’t, most people won’t even notice. You see what I mean?

ASIA

After an 11-year-long drought, the Philippines finally came up with a competitive candidate who can take it all. A shoo-in for the semi-finals, Miss Philippines has the most appropriated name for a Miss Universe: Venus! She’s been doing everything with perfection, and can conquer the so dreamed 3rd Miss Universe crown for her country (why not?).

Three other countries are competing strongly in Asia: Korea, who was a Miss World semi-finalist in 2009 and is looking even better now, Japan, another strong candidate from Ines Ligron’s school with a “Ryio’s vibe”, and surprising Thailand, who did so well in the Presentation Show and is suddenly in the game. Four Asian beauties among the semi-finalists? Why not? They all deserve to be up there.

In time: do not underestimate India – a true natural Indian beauty who certainly rocked in her personal interview with the judges.

EUROPE AND THE MIDDLE EAST

A country with little pageant tradition, especially in Miss Universe, Ireland has a front-runner this time around. The Angelina Jolie look-alike Irish stunner tops many lists of favorites and would certainly be a breath for fresh air for the Miss Universe pageant, in case she’s elected. Then there’s the pre-favorite rep from Russia, who possibly has the most perfect face in the competition, but doesn’t show much life on stage. France is incredibly beautiful, but was incredibly shy on stage as well (the problem most Europen beauties face, as a matter of fact…). Miss Ukraine did quite well in the preliminaries and shall be in the top 15.

Albania, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Kosovo (will the streak continue?), Czech and Slovak Republic (the Slovak beauty is a bombshell, but had the worst styling in the preliminaries), Denmark (a sentimental favorite), Greece (why such a horrible evening gown??), Switzerland, could get one or two spots, but won’t go further than the ‘top 10?.

For some reason I see potential in Israel, an unconventional beauty that I would love to see in the top 5 (yes, the top 5!). Who knows…

CARIBBEAN

The Caribbean has once again reserved some great surprises for the Universe: Trinidad & Tobago is one of the strongest contestants in this year’s pageant, and Jamaica, who’s actually no surprise (she did very well when competing in Miss World 2007), could also be fighting for the crown.

Right so uh.. 25 things about myself? This.. could be painful.

1: My full first name is Jenna, I go by Jen for one reason and one reason alone. I got SICK TO DEATH of my name being mispronounced as "Gina" with a hideous nasal whine as English people for some moronic reason tried to imitate my accent. -_- To this day the name "Gina" automatically makes me shudder, it's like nails on a chalkboard to me man.
I decided "Jin" was less annoying.

2: I'm really short, like, 5'2". I always wear 3 inch platforms, which is mostly just because I love freaking huge clompy boots, but it also means people freak out when I take them off and shrink. Every single time people are like "WOAH!? Where'd you go!?"

3: I used to have my lip pierced, which I think you can see in this rather um.. old picture. It gave me endless trouble and eventually I took it out after my lip swelled up for no reason. Never got a chance to put it back in because a few days later I ended up in hospital you know, giving birth. Lol. Kinda took priority.

4: Speaking of which, when this picture was taken I was about 5 months pregnant. Not that you can tell. I didn't start showing till about 7 months tbh, I just woke up fat and was all "WOAH!? What?"
Anyway, my now husband bet me I couldn't fit in the box (We were moving at the time) and I was like "I SO can!" so I climbed on in and well... yeah. I WON!

5: I'm dyspraxic, something I didn't actually know for sure till I was 22 years old!?? I always struggled with memory issues and directions, but having a label really made me feel better. Meant I didn't feel like I was just stupid.

6: I went to university to study Archaeology, but after a year of poor health and really crappy lecturers, I quit and switched courses. I was concerned if I continued with Archaeology my love of the subject would just die, so I took a course in Computer Animation and special effects. I hated it, the university LIED about what we'd learn and I suck at 3d shit.
Even so, despite hating the course and having a freaking baby half way through I managed to get a 2:2, so go me.

7: I moved to the UK when I was 14, I was born in NZ. My parents randomly decided "hey, let's move to England for 2 years, explore Europe, do all that overseas shit. It'll be great."
6 months after arriving in the country they filed for divorce. 11 years later and i'm STILL HERE. Eugh.

8: I love the colour green. in fact, allmost all my clothes are either green, brown or black. I also love really ugly plaid and hideous patterns, not sure why, they just amuse me.

9: I also LOVE skirts, and really would rather just wear them than having to deal with pants. Pants are lame, and they seldom fit me right (See the whole short remark earlier). Most of my skirts are knee length or longer though, just because I prefer the style.

10: I love vintage clothing, especially the 1930s and 40s. And i'm a little um.. obsessed with hats. Why don't people wear hats so much any more? Hats are fantastic and seriously, there's little in the world more damned sexy than a guy in a fedora and trenchcoat... but uh... that might be my Noir obsession talking there. Ahem.

11: My favourite movies of all time are Fargo and Edward Scissorhands. Which is a somewhat random combination would't you say? I love Coen Brothers movies because they're always insane and always keep you guessing, and I love a lot of Tim Burton's stuff for the dreamlike fairytale quality. Edward Scissorhands never fails to bring a lump to my throat.

12: I'm a roleplayer. Started out with chatroom rp and when I started university, joined the role play society (yes, they exist lol).
I don't have a favourite system, but my favourite game setting is the Planescape Campaign setting from AD&D. Why? Because it's totally unlike any other fantasy setting. It's strange and philosophical and surreal and I freaking LOVE that.

13: I'm Wiccan, though i'm pretty lackadaisical in my observation of this faith. Sure I observe most of the sabats, when I remember, but i'm not about to stop everything just because it happens to be Beltaine or whatever. Also, most other neopagans piss me off for being pretentious twats. I try to ignore them, especially when they try to tell me HOW to observe my own fricken faith.
A perfect example of this is a group of people I was doing some thing for the BBC with, who INSISTED as a practising witch I HAD to have a craft name. Uh why? I'm quite happy with my real name thank you very much.

14: I can read Tarot, though I fully accept it's fairly vague and often difficult to interpret or understand. Especially when the person you're reading for is being uncooperative and not telling you ANYTHING about themselves. Grrr.

15: I love old school adventure games, especially the Lucasarts adventure games which I grew up with. My father introduced me to the joys of gaming a

60 YEARS AGO: Dow Chemical CEO, and Four Others, Perish in Fanshawe, Ontario

MARCH 31, 1949

JOHN W MCKAIG had stepped out of his house and was going up the laneway to check the mail, at roughly about 10:30 am, when he heard an airplane flying nearby. Thought nothing of it really. He lived close to the airport, and he heard twin engine airplanes, like these, all the time.

But, when he finally did look up, what he saw, startled him!

He set his eyes on a Dow Chemical Beech 18 coming from the west, and it was heading directly for his house!

His wife and the children, he thought. Have to warn them… to get out. He started running back to the house…

Good grief, the aircraft was now flying only about twelve feet off the ground! And look at how fast it was going!

Suddenly, AJ Bowie, the Dow Chemical pilot, violently swerved the company's Beech 18, just narrowly missing the occupied home. John noted that Beech 18 had already passed between the Dobinson home, and the Dobinson barn safely, when the collision course toward his homeshead been adopted.

Thankfully, the pilot had been able to make this crucial, last second, adjustment.

John watched, spellbound, as the Beech with its wheels down, dropped even lower, and continued on.

Finally, tragically, it plowed into a knoll that was on the far reaches of his property, only about a half mile away. As it hit the knoll, flash fire flames engulfed the entire cabin of the aircraft. It became a flaming streak as the plane bounced, and continued forward for another 200 feet before it heaved to a full stop.

ERNIE DOBINSON who was entering his barn when the Beech 18 flew by, watched in horror as it passed, only to crash into the knoll.

He was the first person to arrive on scene.

What he saw when he got to the flaming wreck astounded him.

Somebody, was actually, getting out of the airplane!

Soon enough, they'd learn it was Calvin Campbell. And he was trying frantically to pull something out of the wreck!

NO! Not something! Someone!!

Sadly… it was his trapped wife!

But the heat was too much, and Calvin finally stumbled backwards to safety. Momentarily. He attempted yet again to enter the burning plane, but had to fall back even more quickly. The heat was so intense. He couldn't accept it, but he knew then, that she was already gone.

Calvin, and Ernie watched helplessly now, from a much safer distance, as the inferno consumed the rest of the cabin.

The engines and the Beech undercarriage were behind the wreck! But how?

WILLIAM CORFIELD was flying overhead and was amazed at what was unfolding on the ground below him. He swung his single seater around, and immediately dropped down to the runway, which surprisingly, was almost just below him. By the time he had stopped and was out of his airplane at the other end of the runway, there was now an RCAF airport truck bearing down on him. Someone motioned him to get on, and so he, too, was on his way back to the crash.

When William got out to the crash, about a dozen folk had gathered. They were milling about the wreck. John and Ernie brought Calvin, who was now overcome with grief, over to the RCAF truck. He had to be helped aboard, he could hardly stand, and as soon as Calvin had settled in, the truck lurched forward, and left, speedily making its way to St Joseph's Hospital.

Calvin couldn't understand it. How did this happen? Sure the weather had been sketchy, yet the flight crew didn't seem overly concerned. And now, everyone, was gone!

What would he tell his kids?

William walked up to the Beech 18. The onlookers were silent. Courtesies, were extended through nods. Stoic, these Ontario farming types, he thought.

The Beech 18 was not an airplane Bill liked. He wasn't impressed with it at all. The manufacturer sung a different tune, for sure… but he had flown the "18", and he didn't like it.

As he approached charred wreckage, "– – – – – –", he thought to himself, "…the Beech's magnesium roof was gone!!"

William was absolutely shocked. Since the Beech's roof was conveniently gone, burned off, he could lean over the still mildly smouldering fuselage, and look right inside the cabin, and into the cockpit!

Like some sort of horrendously, gruesome, displayed cutaway!

Everyone was in position.

The five occupants though were burned to an unrecognizable mound, of charred, glazed flesh, and clothing materials.

Willard, and the women, or even the flight crew, hadn't had a chance to move. They were roasted alive in that final 200 foot journey inside that burning coffin!

What a horrible way for these RCAF airmen to go, William thought.

A flash fire had enveloped the Dow airplane as it struck the knoll, and that horrific fire was fed by the airplane's full to capacity fuel load.

At this point in time, no one knew that it wasn't an RCAF aircraft, as all aircraft registration and identification lettering, had been burned off the Beech's fuselage. And the RCAF had lots of Beech 18s.

Together, the "big six" absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States. But even those areas of the media that the "big six" do not completely control are becoming increasingly concentrated. For example, Clear Channel now owns over 1000 radio stations across the United States. Companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are increasingly dominating the Internet.

But it is the "big six" that are the biggest concerns. When you control what Americans watch, hear and read you gain a great deal of control over what they think. They don't call it "programming" for nothing.

Back in 1983 it was bad enough that about 50 corporations dominated U.S. media. But since that time, power over the media has rapidly become concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people....

In 1983, fifty corporations dominated most of every mass medium and the biggest media merger in history was a $340 million deal. … [I]n 1987, the fifty companies had shrunk to twenty-nine. … [I]n 1990, the twenty-nine had shrunk to twenty three. … [I]n 1997, the biggest firms numbered ten and involved the $19 billion Disney-ABC deal, at the time the biggest media merger ever. … [In 2000] AOL Time Warner’s $350 billion merged corporation [was] more than 1,000 times larger [than the biggest deal of 1983].

Dans nos societes modernes, nous les appelons de bien des facons differentes : « staff », employe, ouvrier, dans la societe chinoise nous les appelons « Fu Wu Yuan », litteralement « employe de service ».
De jour comme de nuit et ceux tous les jours, ils sont la pour vous fournir un service, une prestation commerciale. Ces jeunes garcons et filles, ces hommes et ces femmes representent une organisation, une entreprise, une entite commerciale ou autre, mais au-dela de cela, ils representent une societe entiere avec des codes, des lois et des regles.
Je parle de toutes ces personnes que vous rencontrez chaque jour sans preter aucune attention particuliere, toutes ces personnes qui travaillent en uniforme.
Tous ces Hommes et toutes ces Femmes sont essentiels au developpement et au fonctionnement de la societe chinoise. Ils sont d’abord issus d’une tradition tres asiatique et tres chinoise du service : l’employe au service du client. Et bien heureux en affaires est le patron de magasin ou le directeur qui peut employer une ou deux douzaines d’employees, payes a attendre le client. Mais une autre raison de cette tradition, l’autre facette, est le cout modere de ce type de labeur et l’extreme flexibilite qui en resulte. On peut trouver un « boulot » rapidement, on peut le quitter tout aussi rapidement, et on peut en etre remercie tres rapidement.
Ce travail photographique documentaire n’a pas vocation a debattre sur le niveau de remuneration des employes de base en Chine, de parler de l’education et du systeme ou autre sujet a caractere speculatif.
Ce qui m’interesse ici est de comprendre un peu mieux qui sont ces gens que l’on utilise et cotoie tous les jours sans meme que l’on ne se souvienne du visage. A quoi aspirent toutes ces « petites mains » ? Combien de ces « Fu Wu Yuan » vont-ils grimper les echelons et aspirer a un avenir meilleur ? De quoi revent ces personnes ?
On peut se demander par ailleurs si toute cette masse laborieuse n’existe seulement que grace a la fantastique croissance que connait le pays et ne sera pas amener a diminuer au fur et a mesure que la Chine se stabilisera economiquement et que la main d’?uvre ne sera plus aussi bon marche.
D’un point de vue macroeconomique, regardant tout cela avec distance, serait comme de regarder a un impressionnant reseau de Femmes et d’Hommes representant des milliers d’entreprises et de corporations. Eclatant de couleurs et de styles differents, ils sont la vitrine et la fierte des organisations pour lesquels ils travaillent. Meme code vestimentaire, en ligne, en rangee, ayant generalement l’obligation de se soumettre a la revue quotidienne du patron, du manager, chantant ensemble, ils fournissent un formidable elan de dynamisme et d’optimisme a la societe chinoise.
Regardant ces centaines de photographies, c’est comme si toutes ces personnes constituaient un prisme de couleurs au sein de la societe. La masse que representent ces gens est contrastee par la singularite des visages et des tenues de chaque individu.
Ce travail documentaire est un clin d’?il a leur formidable travail.
Trois annees, de 2010 a 2012, auront ete necessaires a realiser ces portraits dans les principales villes de Chine. Tout travail a un debut et une fin, mais, je crois que je ne pourrais jamais m’arreter de les photographier.

Hello Kitty Waffles!

For my birthday, Mike's parents got me a Hello Kitty waffle maker. It makes 4 cute little waffles at a time, shaped like Kitty and her bunny and bear friends. The backside is traditional waffle-patterned. These are the second batch of waffles I have made, using Krusteaz Belgian waffle mix. The waffle maker's instructions have some recipes for homemade waffle batter but it's poorly translated from the Japanese and calls for strange ingredients like "strong flour" and "weak flour" and uses metric weight measurements instead of cups or tablespoons. They do suggest a variation on the basic "pancake mix powder" recipe using minced tea leaves that seems really intriguing, if I ever buy any loose leaf tea.
This picture was a pain to take because the lighting is all weird and with the flash it was ugly and washed out.

My Eye

I took this trying to figure out what color my eyes are. Yes, a strange thing to wonder, but I am red/green color blind, so i could never figure out if my eyes are brown/hazel/green, so I took this to compare to other pictures of eyes. It seems my color vision fluctuates. Sometimes this looks very green, and other times a brownish green. Next time I will remember to use that powder stuff they use for television to reduce the shine on my face.

You duplicate the image twice so you have three copies, give the two copies a Gaussian Blur of 7, then make the top layer Soft Light and the middle layer Overlay.

Gives great effects with clouds.

My Free Rain Barrels - Drill Pump, Pumps Water Up 10 Feet

My FREE Rain Barrels with Drill and Drill Pump. I am using an old water presure regulator to filter the water. You could use a hose filter. On the right circled by the washer machine hose is the box the drill pump came in from Home Depot.
The white stripe on the barrel is where I can tell how much water is in the barrel. You can also touch the barrel with the back of your hand and feel that it is cooler where the water level is located.

Description: The 1/2 inch pipe on the right is an air vent. The bottom pipes are 3/4 inch pipes connected to the bung. The top pipes are 3 inch drain pipes. Male Adapter, Tee, and Elbo. (You could use a toilet flange in place of the male adapter, and bolt it down). When the Rain Barrels are full the water goes out the overflow.

For the air vent hole on top of the second barrel I drilled a 3/4 inch hole with a flat bit. Then I used an iron 1/2 inch pipe nipple to tap the hole. The iron nipple is tapered.

I also tapped the 3 inch hole with a 3 inch iron pipe reducer. I found a can the size I needed to draw the 3 inch circle. I used a bar clamp to screw the 3 inch reducer into the rain barrel. A good tight fit.

I used alcohol to clean the oil off of the PVC pipes insted of the purple cleaner before I glued the pipes.

I have a drill pump that I bought at Home Depot for $6,97 that pumps 3.75 GAL per minute. I pump my water up 10 feet.

A pond pump pumps about the same amount of water, the submersibles are 7.08 inches wide. It will not fit in my barrel with a 3 inch drain pipe. They do have one that is not submersible $39.97. It only pumps water up 7.8 feet Maximum. I leave my drill pump hooked up to the rainbarrel, and take the drill inside.

One and one quarter inchs of rain filled the two rain barrels. The tape on the front is to see how full the rain barrels are filled when I pull the tape off. The rain barrel is white translucent. Painted with primer and two coats of dark paint to keep the alga from growing.
The 3 inch pipes are not glued. I may want to take them off to clean the barrel.

I have glued a 1 1/4 inch pipe 2 inches long into the bung to keep the settlement from clogging the valve.
The downspout lifts up.so I can clean the screen. Barrels completly fill up. The drums were free.

I have seen water coming out of my downspout going out over 13 inches. A little more than a one inch pipe could handle.

Painting was the hardest part. Not as easy as just putting a spicket in the side of a trash can, but they hold more water and work better.

Men don't make passes at nerdy professors in glasses.

He always took me and my sister with him. Our only female influence (until I was a teenager) was my head librarian grandmother. Kat and I spent the summers with her, 9-6, 5 days a week, in the Public Library.

11. I haven't slept for 3 months. (might be because I miss my sister) Might have to try sleeping on the roof. It's a great place to hide and stay cool.

12. Embarrassed by the fact that I have asthma ~ keeps me from dating, mountain climbing and oil painting.

13. Love games and kill at poker. Can't do Trivial Persuit or Rubik's cubes.

14. I am an incredibly kind person, an excellent friend, and will always be there for you if you are one.

15. Fall in love at the drop of a hat, but learned not to do anything about it.

16. Have an almost magical sense of intuition.

Realize I left my son off the list. I'm incredibly proud of him, his music, his photography, his intensive travel, and his brilliant mind. He considers himself a "lucky monkey". I consider myself a "lucky mom".
