An amazing survivor from the medieval age! Still in situ in the Norman chapel crypt,only partially protected from the elements by a modern roof over the altar.
Many of the Abbey ruins are exposed to the ravages of the weather,and I noticed much crumbling and flaking stonework. Apparently little can be done about it without destroying the integrity of the site.

Fireplace Tile Hearth Project

The project is complete. The tile is laid and grouted. The baseboards have been attached to the wall and the glass screen is back on the fireplace.

I think it came out pretty well, and I didn't have to pay the F---- Team contractors the $600 they wanted for this little job. Satisfaction.

Republic by Plato

Read this over the last year in rather small doses, just a few pages at a time. Interesting, but not very entertaining. Obviously a classic and well-known philosophical text. Exploring the meaning of justice, organization of political systems and states, reality etc. It's basically a loooong monologue in the form of a dialogue. Plato puts the words of the monologue into the mouth of Socrates (apparently, it was common at the time, to use real-life people in poetic work in this way). The book is certainly more readable in this dialogue form, but, for the most part, the interlocutors other than Socrates do not really contribute anything meaningful - they just affirm what Socrates says (with some notable exceptions). Here's a typical example:
- Certainly not - Impossible - they must - that is evident - yes - certainly - no question .- to be sure.
Each dash stands for a paragraph of speech by Socrates, the interlocutor just affirms. Many of Plato's ideas seem shocking and awful from the perspective of modern western values. I'm sure a certain infamous German leader of the 1930ies and '40ies would have liked quite a few, on the other hand. For example the idea of separating children from the parents for selective breeding. Or extensive censorship of poetry and other forms of expression. Or the ruling by an elite group in the form of a dictatorship. This dictatorship of philosopher rulers Plato sees as the ideal form of government, whereas dictatorship by a tyrant is seen as the worst, with democracy the second lowest, just above the tyrant rule. Well, I do tend to focus on the negative, don't I?! Well, Plato also half-heartedly seems to promote the idea of equality of women. There are his acclaimed thoughts regarding the relativity of perception (the allegory of the prisoners in the cave, who see just shadows of the 'real' world). Like so many philosophical arguments, Plato's arguments are logically flawed, but, of course, that has to be expected and is perhaps kind of the definition of a philosophical argument... All right, it's late and I've been going on about this book sufficiently long, especially, as this is not the best place for such discussions...

Chris bought a big floor jack and transmission adapter. The adapter is on the left. It's way too tall (the truck back axle would have to be 23 inches above the ground to slide the transmission in on it), so we built our own instead on the right. It doesn't have a fancy tilt adjustment, but it's over six inches shorter. We can adjust the tilt with little shims.

My Monster Garage

OK, it's nothing like the Sultan of Michigan's, but it's the biggest garage I've ever had. It's good to have a big garage when you've got two Spec RX-7's to swap transmissions between, and it's been raining outside for a solid week. Technically it's my basement, but somebody put a garage door on the side, and I'm not one to complain about it.

Ann Ball's House, High Street, Totnes

According to the plaque on the building this was the home of Ann Ball who on 19th July 1586 married Sir Thomas Bodley - founder of the Bodleian Library of the University of Oxford. The house is now used as a branch of Barclay's Bank plc - although you would not guess that from the outside.

Circa 1585 in Dutch Renaissance manner; the front was raised and re-fenestrated in the later C18, and the ground floor loggia infilled. The building was originally of "deux corps de batiments" type; the separate kitchen block and gallery were demolished in 1968. The building became the Naval Bank in 1902. 3 storeys. 3 windows. Hipped Welsh slate roof. Plastered timber-framed front. Modillion eaves cornice. Decorated plaster friezes with lozenge motifs and date "1585" and initials "N.B" (1st floor). Rusticated pilasters on quoins to 1st and 2nd floors. (former frieze of 2nd floor removed when building was heightened). Later C18, linked, architraved sash windows to 1st and 2nd floors with glazing bars. Former ground floor loggia with 3 bay Tuscan colonnade with semi-elliptical arches and enriched spandrels. Mid C19 segmental arched sash window infill to colonnade. House doorway with re-hung original doors of 1585 with pilasters carrying semi-elliptical blind arch (repeating motif of colonnade); rusticated panel infill with wrought iron pegs. Interior remodelled but retains fine 1st floor plaster ceiling decorated with rib work enriched with floral motifs. Ceiling beam and frieze decorated with rose motifs and roundels inscribed "M.E." Goodbye, Disco Ball!

This was where my church used to meet. I've been attending River Crest Church for nearly two years here at the City Island Recreation Center. It has been a great spot, even if not very attractive! City Island is right next to the marina in downtown Daytona Beach, and the views outside made coming here fun. Inside, the view was less than exciting, even if there was a big, 1970's disco ball on the ceiling, which always spun, casting its glittery light on the floor while we worshipped! (I won't miss it! As a migraine sufferer, gazillions of brilliant, reflected lights are not always enjoyable!) We WILL miss the tables where we could easily take notes, and have our morning coffee and bagels. Still, when you see our new church home, you'll see why we're excitied about being more like a "real" church!

River Crest Church owes a deep debt of gratitude to The Daytona Beach Seventh Day Baptist Church for allowing us to use their facility. They asked for what amounted to a love offering, and have given us full use of the church and offices, which is going to make set up a joy, and give our pastor an office at last! This church is one of the oldest in the area, and is a lovely, little building! Done in the traditional style, with side and center aisles, pews, and stained glass windows, it is a delight to worship and fellowship there, and we look forward to working with the Seventh Day Baptists to fulfill the Great Commission, each in our own, unique way. This is a church with a long heritage that we respect greatly, especially for their openness to cross denominational boundaries for a common belief and purpose.

So, goodbye, City Island, and hello to the next step in our destiny!

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Open Iron and Steel Flooring and Grating for Building Construction in Japan

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for open iron and steel flooring and grating for building construction across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for open iron and steel flooring and grating for building construction. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for open iron and steel flooring and grating for building construction in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

The 2009 Report on Manufacturing Ornamental and Architectural Metal Work, Staircases, Metal Open Steel Flooring, Fire Escapes, Railings, and Scaffolding: World Market Segmentation by City

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "manufacturing ornamental and architectural metal work, staircases, metal open steel flooring, fire escapes, railings, and scaffolding" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

Stairs to the rooms

In through the doors at the old barracks building we find arched celings, creme and burgundy paint on the walls, old metal beds (rusted - no mats) and warped floors and celings that were caved in.

Kummersdorf Air Base September 2006

These are all photos of an old german then soviet air base in Kummersdorf Germany. They're in the process of tearing it down to expand Shonefeld airport, near Berlin.

Most of these buildings were built during ww1 for training the German military. Then, as WW2 progresssed rocket research was done here in an attempt to come up with larger more powerful artilery shells, and then atomic weapons. Finally, when the scientists headed to the US and Russia, they started building artilery shells and training officers here.

After WW2, when the soviets moved in, the soviets had staging post for their troops, and started doing research on rockets for the space race. Somewhere in these pictures is a soviet explosive test area (it was a buried bunker with 35 foot thick concrete walls surrounding 10 foot thick steel bunker.) which was exploded and broke windows for over 3000 houses nearly a mile away.

H. H. Richardson House

Arrochar, Staten Island, New York City, New York, United States

Henry Hobson Richardson, considered by many to be the greatest nineteenth century American architect, built a house for himself and his family in Arrochar, on Staten Island in 1868. The Richardson family lived there from 1869 until 1874 when they moved to Brookline, Massachusetts so that Richardson could supervise the construction of Trinity Church in Boston. The Staten Island house is a large, Stick Style residence with a high mansard roof, showing Richardson’s understanding both of the prevalent styles in American home building as well as the influence of his years studying and traveling in France. The house survives on what is now a busy thoroughfare, having been converted in 1946 to physicians’ offices. It is a striking reminder of a period in Staten Island history when the borough was a rural enclave, home to numerous prosperous and enlightened men who were looking for beauty and community near an urban environment. Although the wall cladding has been changed and there have been some additions on the first story, the tall mansard with its numerous dormers and chimneys, the iron roof cresting, and the variety of exterior shapes and picturesque outline continue to suggest the vibrancy of the life that was once lived here. This building survives as one of only two in New York City attributable to Henry Hobson Richardson.

DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS

Arrochar, Staten Island

Staten Island had experienced a huge influx of population beginning in the 1810s due to the widespread economic and social changes caused by Manhattan’s rapid growth and commercialization. The island began to attract many wealthy businessmen from New York, who were looking for real estate investments, residences and retreats from the hubbub of the city. The pace of development increased after several epidemics in Manhattan in the 1820s and 30s, as well as the Great Fire of 1835. Staten Island was easily accessible by ferry to lower Manhattan, yet the area remained rural and idyllic. The initial increase in population was “concentrated on the north and eastern shores,” and “was so intense that dividing lines between developments blurred: by 1840, the area appeared to many observers as ‘almost a continued village.’ ”

There were, however, numerous distinct new settlements including Clifton, a suburban area south of Stapleton, founded in 1837. One section of Clifton, located on a high point of land overlooking the Narrows and Fort Wadsworth was originally very rural. Numerous large estates were built in this area after the Civil War, and it came to be called Arrochar. The name derived from the hills of Arrochar on the northern end of Lach Lomond in Scotland, the family estate of Wall Street attorney William W. MacFarland, who built his new residence on Staten Island in 1880.

Prior to and during the Civil War, Staten Island was home to a community of forward-thinking men (many of them abolitionists), that included Frederick Law Olmsted, Judge William Emerson (brother of Ralph Waldo), newspaper editor Sidney Howard Gay, and prominent man-of-letters George William Curtis. Growth continued after the Civil War, as hundreds of wealthy families built villas and large estates on the still undeveloped land.

Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886)

Henry Hobson Richardson was born to a wealthy family at Priestly Plantation in Louisiana. After a private schooleducation, Richardson attended Harvard University, where he became interested in architecture. After graduation, Richardson traveled in England and Europe, finally settling in Paris where he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and the atelier of Jules-Louis Andre, whichhe attended intermittently between 1860 and 1865. Richardson was only the second American (after Richard Morris Hunt) to study at this important institution. Stranded in Paris during America’s Civil War, Richardson’s funds were cut off and he worked for French architects Theodore Labrouste and Jacques Ignace Hittorff to support himself.

Richardson returned to this country in 1865, settling in New York City. In the same year, Frederick Law Olmsted also came back to the city to begin work with Calvert Vaux on Prospect Park. All three men participated in the newly founded American Institute of Architects, as well as the Century Club, a group of artists, architects, and men of letters, and it is clear that the men became friends. Richardson lived first in Brooklyn while trying to start an architectural practice. In 1867, Richardson began a partnership with Charles Dexter Gambrill (1832-1880), another Harvard graduate. It appears that this was purely a convenient business arrangement with no artistic collaboration between them. The firm lasted until 1878 however, and it is credited with only one extant work in New York City, the renovation of the Century Club.

By 1866 Olmsted had convinced Richardson to move to Staten Island, where he, like

Pure nostalgia, I remember United Autos ex-Eastern Scottish VRs with the same window configuration and upholstery, although they were all withdrawn in 1980 bar open-top 637. Uniteds VRs still had a light blue vinyl flooring and green rexine panelling which has been replaced on this Fleetline with wood panel effect laminate. Different!
