Bucyrus

This is an old Bucyrus steam shovel that dug in the Panama Canal. After doing duty on the Canal project, it wound up at a mine in the Colorado mountains near Nederland. Its move from the old mine site to the Mining Museum in Nederland was featured on the History Channel's show "Mega Movers."

This article, originally published on November 16, 1893, by the editors of the American Engineering and Railroad Journal, describes the layout of a new plant for the Bucyrus Steam Shovel & Dredge Company at South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the article they discuss how Bucyrus has built the new plant to replace the old plant at Bucyrus, Ohio, as the old plant had been added onto as business grew and, because of these incremental changes, it did not efficiently serve the needs of the now larger and still growing company. Apparently the new plant was designed for both current efficiencies as well as having an eye towards future growth.

Written in what might be called the third wave of the industrial revolution, here is an example of an American manufacturer looking at their physical plant for increased efficiencies. They make a point of showing how they have used electricity for everything, “powered by two multi-polar generators of 150 horsepower each (one of which is in reserve), driven by a Corliss engine.”

Included are two line illustrations of the new plant, one of the overall grounds and a cross section of the main building; and two black and white pictures. The first picture is of one of their steam shovels at work in railroad construction, and the second one is one of their dipper dredges in use by the Montreal Harbor Commission.

I usually upload at the earliest on Thursday but mostly on Friday and then maybe one on Saturday but I decided to post tonight because I want to post one more before I leave Tuesday July 12 for my Jackson Hole, WY (USA) wildflower shoot where I hope to get more nice sunsets and sunrise shots. Meandering around waiting for the sun to set I was lucky enough to have a good set of clouds and light. This makes it all worth waiting for to me.

Tahan river

I spent one week inside Taman Negara National Park trekking to the summit of Mount Tahan (2187m) recently. Although nothing to shout about in terms of height, the one week trekking inside the rain forest, while carrying food and camping equipment myself was the toughest physical activity I have ever done in my life for sure.

We had to cross Tahan river seven times fighting the strong current at water level up to the hip.

The CLM proofer receives the dough and guarantees the maintenance of the thermal and hygrometric conditions for the requested time. During this phase, the product, placed on the proofer trays, each tray having a certain number of pockets, is lifted on conveyors in different floors using two elevators, one to lift the trays into the conveyor at the right floor and the second to lift them out from the dough resting room. Vietnamese Spring Rolls Recipe

Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Prawns, Crispy Vegetables and Miso Sauce

Serves 8-10 people

Ingredients
1 package rice paper wrappers, also called spring roll skins

For the Filling
2 cups cooked glass noodles (1 small package)
1 cup loosely packed with mint leaves
1 cup assorted shredded vegetables (cabbage, carrots, etc.)
8 large prawns

For the Miso Sauce
2 tablespoons yellow miso paste
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon or lime juice
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

green onions and sesame seeds to garnish

Fill 2 medium sauce pots ? full of water and bring to a simmer. One pot is for the prawns; one pot is for the glass noodles.

Pick the mint leaves. Shred the vegetables. Peel and de-vein the prawns. Keep these ingredients separate. They will be layered inside the spring roll.

When the water comes to a simmer, drop in the glass noodles, and let simmer for about 8 minutes. They should be tender but not overcooked. Remove the noodles from the heat and strain them into colander. Run cool water over them to end cooking.

Meantime, place the de-veined prawns into simmering water for 5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and let cool. * This technique is called poaching. When they are cool, slice the prawns horizontally in half with a pairing knife.

Miso Sauce
Whisk together miso paste, soy sauce, lemon juice and honey in a large mixing bowl. Slowly add 1 teaspoon sesame oil and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, whisking continuously.

Filling the Rolls
Clear a clean dry work surface for the rice paper. Fill a bowl with warm water. Soak the rice paper, one sheet at a time, for a few seconds and then place on a clean, flat work surface. Place a small amount of noodles on the edge of the paper closest to you, running the whole length. Next add some vegetables, prawns, and mint. Now the tricky part: carefully pick up the edge of the paper closest to you and roll it over the ingredients. Continue rolling while gently tugging at the paper and pulling back to keep it tight. When you have finished, let the roll sit for a moment while the rest of the water is absorbed.

Serving
Cut the rolls into 3 pieces and place on a platter. Drizzle the miso sauce on top. Garnish with green onions and toasted sesame seeds.

Lake Side signal box was a Furness Railway Type 4 design which opened in 1913 fitted with a 42 lever Railway Signal Company Tappet frame, replacing an earlier signal box located a short distance to the south. The signal box was reduced to a non block post when the line from Plumpton Junction was converted from electric token working to one engine in steam working (possibly on 17th May 1966). Closure by British Railways along with the Plumpton Junction to Lake Side line, came on 11th September 1967. The signal box was reopened by the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway as a non block post named Lakeside along with the line between Haverthwaite and Lakeside on 2nd May 1973

The signal box carries three nameboards. On the front is a later style of Furness Railway nameboard with plain lettering on a board with rounded ends. And at either end of the signal box placed above the eaves using redundant channel rod are London Midland and Scottish Railway nameboards, a practice that was peculiar to the London Midland and Scottish Railway's Furness section

Washington & Oregon Students Learn About Landmines

They don't let me out in public too often, but once in a while these days I get to tell the story of our work, show a DVD and answer questions. This Saturday, I was at Thomas Jefferson High School in Auburn in a speaker series with some big names in humanitarian mine action. The audience was a group of about 80 high school students from Washington and Oregon who are pursuing an International Baccalaureate, a demanding two-year curriculum that paves the way for students to study internationally.

I followed Pat Patierno, formerly with the State Department and now with the International Trust Fund for demining, and Jim Lawrence, deputy director of the State Department's Office of Weapons Abatement and Removal. Pat and Jim, whom I have known for years and who have been extraordinarily supportive of our work in Southeast Asia, outlined the general problem of landmines.

Since this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty, it doesn't hurt to recite some of the statistics. Roughly 80 countries in the world have a problem with landmines and unexploded ordnance. About every 30 minutes someone somewhere in the world gets killed or injured by a landmine or UXO. It's easy to make and place a landmine or antipersonnel device (costing as little as $3), but expensive, painstaking and dangerous to remove (costing as much as $1,000 per mine or bomb).

The IB students were intrigued by the extent of the problem and the profound impact on a developing country's prospects for economic progress. As one speaker pointed out, you may be in a country where villagers can see the mangos hanging plumb and ripe from the trees beyond a minefield but they would get killed if they tried to pick them.

My talk covered our approach to survivor assistance, one of the three pillars of what's called "humanitarian mine action.” The other two are demining (removal) and risk reduction education (awareness of the dangers among impacted communities). Our philosophy has always been holistic. We look at all the needs of the survivors and their families, plus try to help their communities however we can. This starts with emergency medical care and goes all the way to vocational skills training.

The way we help survivor communities is through capacity building projects, such as large donations of medical equipment and supplies to their local hospitals, setting up prosthetics fabrication shops and physical rehabilitation facilities, supporting training fellowships for doctors from their region, etc.

I showed a DVD about our outreach work among survivors in central Vietnam. It features our young friends Lai (injured by a cluster bomb) and Ha (burned severely by a phosphorous grenade). It moves me every time I see them tell the story of their accidents and how it changed their lives, then how our involvement changed things again. It brings back all the memories from meeting them in person. Ha, who was forced to get around on her knees until she received support for surgery from CPI, now has a baby!

The students were equally moved by their stories and by the other presentations which included a demonstration by Perry Baltimore of the Marshall Legacy Institute of a Belgian shepherd trained to help find landmines for demining projects worldwide. Several of the students came up to the speakers after the event to thank us for inspiring them to look for ways to help fundraise for humanitarian mine action.

Leading The Break.

Recently, staff of the Lady Dunn Health Centre and the Wawa Medical Clinic participated in a hockey game. The proceeds of entry and donations were donated to the LDHC Auxiliary for the future purchase of needed medical equipment within the facility. One hour of ice time and just under $1000.00 was raised. It was fun for the players, fans and the LTC residents who attended. We hope to make this an annual event.

Thank you to all who participated and donated. The community was the big winner of this game.

Deploying the ROV

To investigate possible erosion around Trinidad Lake’s dam, Civil Engineering Technician Ronnie Casaus took a group to survey the areas. This was a great opportunity to test the Corps’ new surveying equipment.
Prior to that expedition, the surveying equipment used by the Corps could only investigate above water, so damage that was occurring below water was difficult to see or locate.

The Corps’ new equipment is known as the Proteus Hydroacoustics ROV, and it has a camera attached to allow underwater viewing.

The trip allowed three individuals in Albuquerque and one at John Martin to learn how to operate the Corps’ new equipment, and it provided lessons learned for future survey missions.

NEW YORK — New York District's newest survey vessel sails around the New York and New Jersey Harbor as its crew works to calibrate its newly installed survey equipment. As the vessel hasn't been named yet, people have nicknamed it "Little Giant" after the model of the boat and because it's relatively small. "Little Giant" has four different kinds of surveying capabilities, including a new capability for New York District's fleet - sub-bottom surveying. Sub-bottom surveying allows the vessel to not only determine how far it is to the bottom of a channel, but it can sort of "see through" the layers of sediment to help determine how deep the sediment is before becoming rock. Cleveland's Transit Vehicles: Equipment and Technology (Ohio)

From the beginnings of the horse car era to the "sardine days" or World War II, Cleveland transit operators provided high quality service while introducing procedures and equipment that were widely copies elsewhere.
The social and political aspects of Cleveland's public transportation history are the subject of this companion volume to Horse Trails to Regional Rails. The focus here is on the technological aspects of the system.
From the start of street railway operations in 1859 until the end of the surface electric era in 1963, the city was crisscrossed with hundreds of miles of track and overhead wire, and with thousands of poles to keep the overhead wire in place. Thousands of streetcars, and then thousands of buses, carried millions of passengers. The old Cleveland Transit System alone carried over 493 million passengers in 1946, and that total does not reflect the ridership of various suburban carriers.
In this volume are described and listed both the early vehicles and the modern ones.
It is not so much a nostalgic look at earlier times as it is a description of how ongoing developments in the industry changed the way the public transportation system carried out its mission. In Cleveland this was accomplished with rare efficiency and with good speed.
The authors confess, whoever, to one nostalgic piece. In 1965, Jack Ainsley, a Cleveland rail fan, wrote his reminiscences about taking the streetcar through the Detroit-Superior Bridge subway. His narrative is in part 3. His recollections help from the technological focus of this volume and give it a more human face.

Treeless Plain

In 1976 in Perth, high school students, David McComb on acoustic and bass guitars and vocals, and Alan 'Alsy' MacDonald on drums and vocals, formed Dalsy as a multimedia project making music, books and photographs. They wrote and performed songs with Phil Kakulas on guitars and vocals (all three later in The Blackeyed Susans), they soon became Blok Musik, and Logic (for a day). In May 1978, they became The Triffids, taking their name from the post-apocalyptic novel by John Wyndham, The Day of the Triffids. They were soon joined by Andrew McGowan on guitar and Julian Douglas-Smith. When Byron Sinclair joined on bass guitar in September, McComb switched to rhythm guitar. The Triffids began partly in response to the punk rock movement. Writing in his diary as a teenager, McComb traced the band's emergence in Perth:
"On the night of November 27, 1976, a tape was made by Alsy MacDonald, playing a single toy drum, and Dave McComb playing acoustic guitar. The multimedia group 'Dalsy' had come into being. Dalsy went on to make several remarkable tapes (mainly of original material): The Loft Tapes, Rock 'n' Roll Accountancy, Live at Ding Dongs, Bored Kids, Domestic Cosmos, People Are Strange Dalsy Are Stranger, Steve's and the seminal punk work, Pale Horse Have a Fit.… Dalsy did paintings, sculptures and poetry, and wrote a book named "Lunch". They were tinny and quirky, obsessive and manic, versatile and productive. They were also immensely unpopular.... The members of Dalsy grew to hate their audience. They still do, and this hate is an integral part of their music. Dalsy split up towards the end of 1977…. They launched into 1978 as Blok Musik, with their famous Blok Musik tape.… In April, they played at the Leederville Town Hall Punk Fest, alongside Perth's punk rock contingent but, as usual, no one danced. After that they went home and metamorphosised into Logic. Within a day they changed their minds, and metamorphosised into the Triffids."
Between 1978 and 1981, McComb had written over 100 original songs and The Triffids had recorded and independently released six cassette tapes simply called, 1st (1978), 2nd (1978), 3rd (1979), 4th (1979), Tape 5 (1980) and Sixth (1981) (see List of The Triffids Cassettes). By 1979, Kakulas and Sinclair had left and were replaced by David's older brother, Robert McComb on violin and guitar, and Will Akers on bass guitar, in 1980 Margaret Gillard had joined on keyboards. At year's end, the band won a song competition run by the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) Student Guild’s radio show on 6NR (now Curtin FM) and, in July 1981, they released their first single, "Stand Up" on Shake Some Action label. MacDonald had briefly left the band for two months and the single was recorded with Mark Peters as drummer.

Gillard and Akers left in February 1982 and were replaced by Jill Yates on keyboards and a returning Sinclair. April saw the release of Reverie, a four-track EP on Resonant Records. Around this time, due to the small population/market in Perth, the band started the long journey driving from Perth to Sydney, then Melbourne (and back again) to play shows, do some recording and to live for large periods of time, often in quite squalid conditions. By mid-year Sinclair had left again, Martyn P. Casey joined the band on bass guitar in September 1982, For $150 a night, The Triffids’ services as a support act were procured by The Reels, The Sunnyboys, The Church, Hunters and Collectors or Uncanny X-Men.
As a four-piece—Casey, David & Robert McComb, and MacDonald—they signed to Mushroom Records' White Label in Melbourne and released a single "Spanish Blue" in October 1982 and the Bad Timing and Other Stories EP in March 1983. By then, back in Sydney again, Jill Birt had joined on piano, organ and vocals. Soon after the release of Bad Timing and Other Stories, Mushroom Records let the band go. They signed with new Australian independent label, Hot Records, which brought the independent scene some much needed cohesion. The Triffids were one of the bands leading Hot’s drive into overseas markets, which partly led to the label’s demise. The Triffids' debut album, Treeless Plain, released in November 1983, was a critically acclaimed and brilliant album—described as a "magnificent, muscular piece of work that pounds out simple powerful rock songs – one of the best indie rock albums of its day"—but no singles were released from it. All tracks for Treeless Plain were recorded over twelve midnight-to-dawn sessions at Emerald City Studios, Sydney in August and September 1983 with The Triffids producing. Their next single, "Beautiful Waste", appeared in February 1984 and was followed by the Raining Pleasure 12" EP in July—the title track, "Raining Pleasure", featured Birt on lead vocals, was cowritten by David McComb with Sydney musician, James Paterson (JFK & the Cuban Crisis). Q: So, you’ve lived in Long Beach all your life. How long have you been at the Lafayette?
A: Three years. We bought at the peak of the market. Right before it crashed. It’s a little demoralizing in a way, but we wouldn’t have gotten financed now. We plan on keeping it forever, so if it’s upside down in 5 years, it doesn’t matter.

Q: Any chance of you running for the Lafayette board?
A: It’s something I would consider, but not at this time. I was on the board for EVAD (East Village Arts District) for a while, but I was always too busy to make time for it, to dedicate myself to it.

Q: Do you like living at the Lafayette?
A: Yeah, I like living here. There’s lots of freaks and geeks and tweaks, you know, and I guess I’m one of them. I’m getting to meet more and more people. When you first move in you just meet people in the elevator on a whim, gradually, and you realize how many good people are in the Lafayette.

Q: Where did you live before?
A: We were renting a place in Belmont Shore and we had a couple of roommates.

Q: What brought you to the Village?
A: Diana (Brian’s wife) was managing La Muse Cafe and we were looking at historic buildings, looking for something with a lot of character. We found the place we’re in, we walked in and it was a dump, but it had good vibes. We just kinda got happy right when we walked in and said, hey, we can turn this into something. We like it more and more every day.

Q: Are you guys spiritual?
A: No.

Q: What do you mean by vibes?
A: Just vibes.

Q: You’re saying you were high when you bought the place?
A: Yeah, basically. (Laughs) No, no, no, no.

Q: What do you do for a living?
A: I work for a Japanese steam ship line doing heavy haul brokering. I arrange trucking for mostly project cargo. Mostly from Japan, but typically from anywhere in Asia and we’ll bring it in on our ships and I’ll arrange trucking to get it to whatever state it’s going to.

Q: And you’re a musician as well?
A: Yeah, I’ve been playing music since I was a kid. Playing in bands and always writing music and just doing different projects.

Q: Which instrument?
A: Guitar, bass and singing.

Q: Did you go to school for music?
A: No. I took a couple lessons when I started and that introduced me to it and then just buying books and studying on my own. Playing the first lick to Enter Sandman over and over and over and over. Now, I’m 12 years old, you know, so the concept of the guitar and all the music theory kinda came later. When I first started it was really primitive and you play these strings and go with it, you know.

Q: What is the concept or theory of music?
A: The theory is frickin’ pull out your guitar and play it like you’re playing your dick! But, no, well, just more the creative side of it and being able to listen to it outside of just playing it.

Q: Do you have a band now?
A: Kind of. It’s a couple guys I’m playing with.

Q: What’s the name of the band?
A: No name. We’re still waiting for that to fall out of the sky.

Q: What were the names of some of your other bands?
A: The first band I was in was called FDA Approved. The band after that was called Soma Holiday, which was a take off the Brave New World book.

Q: What kind of music does your new band play?
A: Kind of rock and metal.

Q: What kind of music influences you? Who do you like?
A: Now it’s mostly classic rock. I think that’s the biggest influence now.

Q: The Beatles?
A: Of course.

Q: How about the Sweet?
A: Who?

Q: You never heard of Sweet?
A: What is that? Some 70’s shit you listen to? (Laughs)

A: (laughing) That’s my grandma’s!

Q: When was the last time you played live?
A: We played Taco Beach on Pine during the Gay Pride festival. We walked in and it’s full of gays and I’m gay friendly, but we…

Cadet Field Training: Class of 2013

Firstie Kyle Volle, the Cadet Field Training Regimental Commander, takes a drop into Lake Popolopen at Camp Buckner July 1. At the Water Confidence Course -- part of Cadet Field Training -- cadets from the Class of 2013 were required to climb the 80-foot tower and descend across Lake Popolopen by a hand trolley for a dive into the water. The cadets also mustered balance and confidence to walk across a steel beam, during which they must go up and over two steps, before eventually hanging down the cable for another drop into the lake. With Cadet Field Training for the Class of 2013 well underway, the yearlings are challenged with numerous skill-testing activities, including the water confidence course, first responder training, land navigation and patrolling. First wave of ROTC field training gets underway

More than 360 ROTC cadets, mostly rising juniors from 144 colleges nationwide, started off the first class of summer field training. This year's ROTC field training includes major changes such as the removal of ropes course and the addition of extensive armed and unarmed combat training, some of which will be held at Camp Shelby, Miss., The largest ROTC training overhaul in history was made in an effort to standardize officer commissioning programs and instill 'warrior ethos' in the Air Force's future leaders. This is also the first year field training is hosted exclusively at Maxwell Air Force Base.
