Not too bad, Ouch

This is the only "wound" that I got from my motorcyle wreck (30mph). The bike (yamaha v-star custom 650) was fine, and I picked it up by myself. I tell you what, I really have to give a shout out to Skid Lid! Although I did hit my head on the ground (dirt) I really did not feel a thing! Thank for making great helmets!

Day 128: Concussion

Rushed home from Arizona to meet my boy in the ER. He wrecked pretty badly on his dirt bike. He doesn't look too bad here, but his back, arms, and legs are scraped and bruised and banged up. Most concerning was that he was knocked out, confused, dazed, and agitated. Minor concussion, but all is well! Thank the Lord!

LED torch beam

First, sorry about the crappy photos. I'm not a photographer, but my 5 years old digi camera did it's best, and so did I.

So I discovered a Hong Kong online retailer and bought an LED flashlight from them for $10.40 with free shipping.

Came in the mail 12 days later and OH MY GOD! This flashlight is the best ten bucks I ever spent!

That tree is at least 60 feet away from where i was standing.
The light this thing throws is incredible! And it's powered by three AAA batteries.

I bought it specifically for evening bicycle commuting, but it's a flashlight! And it's only 5 inches long! So I carry it with me all the time. Technology rocks, people. Educate yourselves.

We examined the formation of online trust encountered by potential customers of a brick and click retailer before they visit its online website; this phase of the purchasing experience has been under-investigated in trust literature. Since a brick and click retailer is eager to attract offline customers to its website based on trust in the brick and mortar stores, our exploratory study investigated, (1) Can customers' offline trust in a retailer affect their online trust (in the website operations of the retailer)?; (2) What other factors might be influential on online trust? A social relations and networks perspective was adopted to explain customers' online trust formation during the before-online-visit phase. Findings from a sample of 246 offline customers who had never visited a supermarket's website revealed that word-of-mouth, offline trust, and expected sanctioning power were significant in forming online trust. Furthermore, findings showed that word-of-mouth was more influential than offline trust based on a customers' personal experience with the supermarket's physical stores. This provided empirical evidence on how and why some pure online retailers outperformed brick and click retailers.

This is Dave from San Francisco, I met him on his way up to Hanmer NZ. I don't know the name of this unusual trailer he was towing but he had some great gear on his bike including one of those bags that sits in the middle of the frame, (Made in Alaska).
He was able to carry his tent and sleeping bag under his seat and I think I saw a guitar strapped to a frame on that extra rear wheel.

It's a maroon beauty! My wife spotted it curbside along with another discarded bike with big baskets. The rims are rusty and the tires were flat, but the rubber took air and I've been riding it for five days now.

A classic old steel frame road bike. This was the cheapest "entry level" Sekai 10-speed, similar to the Chicago-made Schwinn Varsity at that time. Originally made in Osaka, Japan, Sekai bikes were imported to the US from 1973 to 1986. This particular Sekai has a "made in Taiwan" sticker by the crankcase.

I've been riding very tall bikes for several years, and this smaller frame Sekai makes it easy for me to stop quickly and get both my feet on the ground, instead of balancing on one toe.

However, some residents also take advantage of these bikes since they are well maintained and are a lot cheaper than a car.

270/365 - Lies, Damn Lies and Soap

First off, my apologies to Samuel Clemens for intentionally misquoting him but I think he'd be OK with it. ;)

As many of you know, my wife and have recently relocated to Malta. Since our arrival, we've been living in a resort hotel while searching for a home. We generally prefer our own products and typically only use hotel products if we run out of our prefered goops. We've used barely anything from the hotel but the housekeeping people continue to leave two or three new bottles every few days. We leave the growing shelf full of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc. in plain sight yet more continue to show up. I guess I can always sell them on eBay...

Princess Marguerite II

In 1948-1949, two new 5,911-ton coastal passenger liners were built for the Canadian Pacific Railway by the Fairfield Shipbuilders and Engineers Company Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland, at a cost of $4 million each. The sister ships, 373 feet long and 56 feet abeam, were powered by twin-screw steam turbo-electric drives, and had a maximum service speed of 23 knots. They were designed for the now famous “Triangle Route” between Seattle, Victoria, and Vancouver during the summer months. The ships could accommodate 2,000 passengers and had space for approximately 60 vehicles on the car deck. The vessels were fitted with only 51 staterooms, which allowed room for extremely spacious and comfortable lounges, public, areas and decks. Each ship boasted a Grande Staircase, an elegant wood-paneled formal dining room and coffee shop, a ballroom, a cocktail lounge, an observation lounge, and wide promenade decks.

The keel of the SS Princess Marguerite II, the first of these small luxury liners, was launched on May 26, 1948. The ship left Scotland on March 5, 1949, for her 9,600-mile maiden voyage via the Panama Canal to Esquimalt B.C., arriving on April 6, 1949. After cleanup and repainting, the Princess Marguerite II entered service on April 28, 1949, maintaining a four-hour schedule between Seattle and Victoria. The second steamer, the SS Princess Patricia, arrived in Victoria on June 15 1949. The liners moored near the CPR's Empress Hotel in Victoria’s Inner Harbor, and in Seattle at the Canadian Pacific Railway Dock, Pier 64, on Alaskan Way near the foot of Lenora Street.

The Princess Marguerite II continued this service through the summer of 1974. On the morning of September 15, 1974, the ship sailed from Elliott Bay on her last trip to Victoria, ending 70 years of service by CPR steamers between the two cities. In April 1975 the Princess Marguerite II was sold to the B.C. Steamship Company Ltd., a subsidiary of the British Columbia government. The cost of the ship plus 8.7 acres of CPR property bordering Victoria’s Inner Harbor was $2.5 million.

The vessel was given an extensive overhaul and refit at the Yarrows Shipyard in Esquimalt before returning to service on June 1, 1975. The ship was licensed to carry 1,800 passengers, and the car ferry service was eliminated. The Princess Marguerite II, her two funnels emblazoned with the red, white and blue Union Jack of the B.C. government and painted white and gold from stem to stern, returned to Seattle amid great fanfare. Among the dignitaries on board were Washington State Governor Daniel J. Evans (b. 1925), British Columbia Premier David Barrett (b. 1930) and Seattle Mayor Wesley C. Uhlman (b. 1935).

At the end of the 1979 summer season, B.C. Steamship Company decided that because the Princess Marguerite II was over 30 years old, lacked mandatory sewage holding tanks and had a high rate of fuel consumption, she should be scrapped. She was replaced on the Seattle-Victoria run by a B. C. Ferries passenger-car ferry, the M/V Queen of Prince Rupert, renamed the Victoria Princess. But this vessel had a capacity of only 800 passengers and, because she had inadequate docking facilities in Victoria and Seattle, carried no vehicles. The B.C. Steamship Company leased a Boeing hydrofoil they named the Flying Princess to supplement the service.

The M/V Victoria Princess was perceived as just another ferryboat that lacked the Princess Marguerite’s charm and, because of poor public patronage, the 1980 summer season was a financial disaster. Thousands of residents and merchants in Victoria and Seattle pressured the B.C. Steamship Company to “Bring back the Maggie.” The British Columbia government ordered a feasibility study and determined the Princess Marguerite II could be modernized and overhauled for $4.7 million, adding at least 15 years to her service life. The ship was sent to the Yarrows Shipyard in Esquimalt for another major refitting.

On May 8, 1981, the Princess Marguerite II returned to service. In addition to the sewage-holding tanks, the ship was fitted with a new galley and boilers. To meet safety and engineering standards, new life-saving equipment was installed and the ship’s electrical systems were modernized. The passenger areas were reconfigured to include a solarium on the stern plus areas for playing cards and electronic games. Because of the rising cost of oil, the ship’s high rate of fuel consumption was still a problem. To increase revenue, the B.C. Steamship Company restored the practice of carrying automobiles and bicycles.

In September 1986, the B.C. Steamship Company decided to operate a second ship on the Seattle-Victoria run for the 1987 season. The 430-foot Vancouver Island Princess, formerly owned by B.C. When we found this 1946 space heater, its heating days were long over. We cleaned it, gutted it, added a few lights and Robottie B. Hottie was born!

Inside the heater are two flashing red C7 bulbs that give a lot of visual action behind the grate. On top there are two blue "eyes" and two flexible "arms" with retro purple swirl bulbs. In the center is a 1970s bicycle headlamp that has been fitted with one flashing green C7 bulb. New cord and all bulbs are included. Incidently, learned a great technique where you remove the pedal and lower the seat and allow them to roll down a grassy hill. This allows the kids to touch the ground if need be and they learn the automatic reaction required to correct and balance while removing the complication of pedalling. Then once they are getting comfortable, simply bring the pedals back and it all comes together..

This "ride behind" bike is attached to my bike. It's the only way my 5-year-old could pedal the 15 miles of the Hiawatha Trail. And the only reason I could haul her 60 pounds behind me without passing out from exhaustion was because the trail is a 1% downgrade from top to bottom, followed by a shuttle ride back to the start.

A Razor brand electric mini-bike that I found by the road sans speed controller and batteries. James, Cody, and I scrambled to rewire it with a couple mismatched small batteries I had around, some scraps of heavy wire, and a beefy switch. Sierra poses on it and it ran pretty decent as long as you keep in mind you have to keep it on flat surfaces to keep from overheating anything.

Biker Tribes: The Windsor ordinary bicycle, c.1878.

The ordinary bicycle, or penny-farthing, was popular from the early 1870s to the late 1880s but was unstable and difficult to mount and dismount. The front wheels became increasingly large as makers realised that the larger the wheel, the further the cycle could travel with one rotation of the pedals. The lower and more stable safety bicycle of 1885 with two similarly sized wheels, which superseded the ordinary, was much the same in design as modern bicycles. This example of an ordinary made by W Willis of Eton in Buckinghamshire has a tubular frame with solid rubber tyres, and is complete with saddle and bell.

Efficient and Effective J-Cradle Design
The Thule 835PRO Hull-a-Port PRO Rooftop Kayak Carrier is the right kayak carrying solution for paddlers whose concerns in a carrier are split between efficiency and ease of use. Designed around two folding J-profile Hull-a-Port carrier assemblies, each attached to a roof rack load bar and containing four adjustable touchpoints of padding, the Hull-a-Port PRO allows kayaks of all shapes and sizes to safely lean on their sides, with the cockpit facing out. This vertical stowage position is safe, aerodynamic and secure in transport and poses no danger of warping to boats when they are stowed correctly. Vertical stowage and transport also efficiently uses the precious space atop your roof rack, allowing for up to four Hull-a-Port PRO carriers to be used at once on certain vehicles, or leaving room for other roof rack accessories to share space with the 835PRO. The Thule Hull-a-Port PRO Rooftop Kayak Carrier is also easy to load and unload by 1-2 people. Mounted close to the side of a vehicle, once drained, kayaks are easily lifted and held in place by the padded J-profile Hull-a-Port design.
The Hull-a-Port Pro also contains simple, but substantial aerodynamic improvements over other similar carriers. The first of these is that when it is not loaded, a lift of a lever allows its two Hull-a-Port support assemblies to fold flat onto your roof rack. This instantly reduces wind resistance on moving vehicles, thus improving gas mileage. This functionality also allows for better clearance around low branches, garages and the like. In a similar fashion a pocket in the lower pad of the Hull-a-Port PRO can be used to securely hold excess lengths of straps used to tie off kayaks. Tucking straps away like this reduces the chances of them coming loose in transit and cuts down on noise they generate as wind blows by them.

The Thule Hull-a-Port PRO Rooftop Kayak Carrier features completely tool-free installation. Its two J-profile cradles can be mounted quickly and securely using only a combination of bolts and mounting knobs on virtually any roof rack, including all Thule base racks, round cross bars and factory installed roof racks with cross bars. It also includes two straps to secure each end of kayaks to J-profile Hull-a-Port PRO assemblies and your roof rack, as well as bow and stern ?-inch rope tiedowns with hooks, and ratcheting attachments to further secure mounted kayaks at the front and rear via your bumper, tow hook or trailer hitch by way of your kayak's grab handles.

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia.
