Broken Mirror - Crime Scene report

Broken Mirror - Crime Scene report

I am going to describe this violent case and related pictures as I know it; partly to relieve myself of the tension caused by the role I played and to maybe help someone going through a similar situation.

A neighbor-lady moved in about 6 months ago directly across the street. She is a highly successful business woman who travels a lot, and was divorced within the past couple of years, and her kids had just started college so she moved here to give herself a fresh start. She was very friendly and open with her home and her life. She employed me to help her with her business and we became friends. I met her boyfriend and I saw that guy often until one day I woke up at 3 am to loud crashing and banging noises outside. I remember thinking it sounded like a car being hit, but I was not in the mood for such paranoia so I did not investigate. I didn't react to the ominous noise partly because I convinced myself it was a safe neighborhood and I knew all the neighbors.

This turned out to be the night after they broke up; (her decision over the phone).

The next day I learned that the ex-boyfriend had broken into the home and did a lot of damage, including breaking two knives while he carved 'X's into the kitchen wood and inside her RV, slashing her car, breaking its windows, throwing beer everywhere and slashing some paintings. She should count her lucky stars she was not home that night because I am sure she would have been seriously hurt or killed.

Surprisingly when she found out the first time what he'd done, she hesitated to do more than clean up his mess. She said she didn't want to "start anything" because she was a "non confrontational person". Her friends and I convinced her to at least file a complaint with the police. 'He shouldn't get away with that, especially if he could hurt some one else in the future' I said. Good thing she listened to us, because that initial report is probably what helped me to take care of him the next time he broke in, which was a couple days later. He had still been calling her. Said he was sorry for what he'd done, but still wanted to talk. He keep pushing to get her to talk in person; which I now believe was just a plan to do worse damage. She told him over the phone he needed help, to stay away from her and that they had nothing more to talk about. She told us and several neighbors (this is really smart) to call the police or her if we saw him around her property again. Again she went out of town and her friend's car was left in the garage. (See the car in one of the pictures.)

The next afternoon a neighbor noticed the ex parking his car down the street in a dead end. I was quickly alerted to this so I went over to take pictures of the car, and decided to call 911 because I knew how serious his behavior is and that he was probably inside her house again. I tried calling the neighbor-lady but she was not answering. Sure enough, I heard more banging and crashing noises. My family was concerned that if I notified police, he might harm us but I was not about to let this creep get away with more crap. The 911 operator initially acted like it was not too serious, but I kept insisting on what I knew to be trouble. I was told an officer would be sent to check things out and talk to me. I then went out to work in the garden but I kept my camera nearby in case the psycho-ex came out and I could get some picture of him on the property.

The first officer arrived in about 15 minutes and I told him everything I knew and gave him my key to her house. He banged on the door and called the man's name, telling him to come out and talk, and said he wasn't in trouble (I beg to differ)... No answer, except the noises stopped.

After pulling me aside to ask a couple more questions the officer started calling more back-up patrol. He yelled into the house that they weren't going anywhere. They broke the side gate lock and surrounded the house and began knocking on the neighbor's doors to make sure he hadn't jumped over there. Within an hour the street was covered in at least 8 patrol cars and a canine police dog was brought in. They eventually used my key to open the door and yelled that he had to come out or they would send the dog in. The perpetrator did not come out, so they went in and found him with self-inflicted wounds to his wrists and throat. I saw him being held by the front door with blood all over his face and chest as he was barely conscious. As the paramedics took him, I was interviewed by another officer. I asked if I did the right thing, and they were very insistent that I saved the man's life by reporting it. My initial reaction to this news was like disappointment, because I'd rather have him dead than alive and doing more of this.

The neighbor-lady did not find out until the next day. As I am writing this she still has not gotten back home to see the aftermath. It has been a whole day and her house is starting to attract flies because of all

Pride of Ownership

Pride of Ownership

I wasn't wearing an Aloha shirt and sandals-with-socks, but I did have a Big-Ass SLR (tm), and thus we were both instantly identified as folks who Aren't From Around These Parts. "So what brings you here?" the owner asked.

It was a question that I didn't particularly want to answer. We had a fascinating response sitting right in our holsters, of course. But when you say "We're trying to visit ten diners in one day" you run the enormous risk of being mis-identified as a Colossal Diner Bore or a Roadside America Big Bag O'Gas.

Look, here's why I like diners: they nail the compulsories. Stereotypically, they're not interested in making you a short stack of pancakes cooked with artesian-style whole grains on a stone-floured hardwood-fired grill, served with a kiwi/loganberry compote and the Penguin edition of "Boswell's London Journal." No, they want to serve you the most perfect stack of ordinary pancakes you've ever eaten. Ditto for a BLT, a club sandwich, or a slice of apple pie. Diners are all about simple food done exactly right. Plus, you can usually get in and out of there for less than seven dollars, the staff is almost always genuinely friendly, and unlike TGI Bennihoogans franchises, if God chose to amuse Himself by teleporting you from one diner to another, you'd realize the differences almost immediately.

(Ihnatko stands up, buttons and smooths his shirt, adjusts his glasses, and then proceeds, after clearing his throat and then taking a preparatory breath.)

I do not visit diners out of a sense of nostalgia. "Remember the Fifties?" says the bag-o-gas. "The tailfins on the cars! Elvis on the jukebox! An ice-cold Coke cost five cents, and a red-haired waitress named 'Betty' served you hamburgers at your favorite corner diner." This sort of blatherol is usually oozed out by some stuffed product of the hair-care industry, usually wearing rented bluejeans and a wry, thoughful grin that had to be applied surgically, introducing some sort of show on the White Guy Channel. Either that, or it's a lead-in to a pitch for some sort of adult-incontinence product. Whenever I hear this stuff, I can taste copper.

Oh, and another thing: I do believe that in principle, you should give your consumer dollars to locally-owned business whenever possible. But when I walk into a diner, I do not, repeat, do not smugly pat myself on the back for sticking it to...hang on, there's got to be a website somewhere with exactly the sort of phrase I'm looking for...ah! "The vampiritic Wal*Mart death-spiral of multinatural corporate America and its relentless and savage ongoing assault on Main Street businesses."

I swear to God: I'm just there for the grilled chicken club and a Coke. Diners get my money through the wholesome, old-fashioned method of providing a fantastic product at a low price. If I learn later that everything in my favorite diner, from the parsley sprigs to the busted jukeboxes on the tables, were built and supplied by the Halliburton Corporation, it wouldn't dent my enthusiasm one jot.

I close this harangue by stressing that if you like diners or buildings from the 1930's that are shaped like animals, and you like them for what they are, not for how you think you're supposed to feel about them, then you are clearly neither a Colossal Diner Bore nor a Roadside America Big Bag O'Gas. You are welcome to join me on my next roadtrip.

But back to our narrative. I was a bit timid about being mistaken for some bastard in an RV who had read about the Riverside in "Reader's Digest" or something. Also, it was probably a dicey thing to assume that anybody else would find this whole Diner Decathalon story interesting.

("But what about us?" you ask, dear reader. Well, you're reading this on the Internet, and thus have waived any right to be entertained and/or informed. Onward.)

"We're driving two hours to Connecticut just to meet a friend for breakfast," I lied. "She's been going on and on about this diner she likes, and we thought we'd stop here on the way in case the food sucks."

Gloriously, this was exactly the opening that the proprietor needed to pull out the photo albums: IE, any opening whatsoever,

Oh, yes, I forgot: another great thing about diners is that there's often an intense and cheerful pride of ownership. He showed us photos of the first diner he ever owned, and a diner book where it got featured attention...and a few years ago, they shot a movie with Dustin Hoffman and Dennis Franz here!

So instead of making a quick whistle-stop out of the Riverside, we stayed there rather longer than we imagined, looking at pictures and hearing stories. The Riverside was actually the Times Square Diner before the film company came along and upgraded the entire outside for the cameras. The big new neon sign was a thousandfold improvement over the old one so he decided to just keep the sign and l

Day 12: Best Gift Ever

Day 12: Best Gift Ever

This is a Minolta Hi-Matic 9 35mm range-finder camera, with a Minolta Auto 28 flash. The camera was made between 1966-1969. It belonged to my Grandfather (1921-1980). I was one year old when he passed away.

The bag was his bag that he kept it in, it even has his name, address and phone number inside the lid.

I finally got up with my cousin Justin Sleeper yesterday, he has been wanting to give me a Christmas gift. This is what I got. Not only is it awesome because I've started to collect cameras, but it's more awesome because of the family history behind this camera. Talking to my Mother this morning, I found out that she used this camera for a while in the 1970s - there is even a black and white print she took with this camera hanging up in her living room, dated 1974 and signed with her maiden name.

The only thing that seems to be wrong with it is that the battery cover is missing off on the flash. I'll locate one whatever it takes.

Thanks so much Justin, this means a ton to me.

First Time Out

First Time Out

My granddaughter is the one who really has an interest in photography, so I puchased a Canon A570 IS for her/Me to use. It is a cute little thing, ISO to 1600, white balance features, macro, , P, AV, TV, M and 11 standard modes, like Night, Fireworks, Landscape, Portrait, Foliage, Snow, etc, Underwater (no, not I )and video. 7.1 with a 4X zoom. On sale, plus a $50.00 canon rebate.

So we took it for a little test drive out a Hart Park. Her brother was not about to be out done, so he had to take a few shots also.

Notice she is taking a "picture" of the river and her brother is taking a "picture" of me.... taking a picture of him. He said it was "DUALING CAMERAS". Boys minds certainly work a lot different then us girlies. hehe

Ok I don't go on and on about gear...

Ok I do when it's awesome gear. I bought an Olympus Stylus 850SW over the summer and it's totally awesome. It shoots underwater and does some video as well.

Ok, so I may not trade out all my Canon gear, but for a point and shoot this is kinda cool...I just wish it would shoot RAW.

This is a shot of my son learning to snorkel in the pool where I live. He's never done it before (and he's not a strong swimmer) but he's taking to it like a *ahem* fish to water...

Anyway I know this isn't the most awe inspiring photo ever, I'm just being a proud dad with a camera :)

Nikon Love

Nikon Love

Ok, one of those geeky self-glorifying camera porn shots. Crappy lighting, but what the hey. This is just for fun. Most of this stuff is only a few weeks old:

Nikon D90: Received as a b-day present a few weeks ago. Great camera but still trying to figure it out.

Nikon F-801: Nearly 20 years old and still as good as new. "Inherited" it from my dad a few years ago and has served me well since.

Nikon AF 50mm ?/1.8 D: The best $100 dollars I ever spent (bought it used). Apparently one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has ever made.

Nikon AF 35-70mm ?/3.3-4.5: The original kit lens for the F-801. Not so hot (comparatively soft, distortion, zoom ring slowly disintegrating) but the only lens I had until recently.

Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm ?/3.5-5.6G VR: Came as a kit lens with my D90 and is a great performer. VR is especially nice.

Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm ?/4-5.6G IF-ED VR: Decent tele zoom. The VR is practically essential at 200mm. Cheapish plastic mount and no aperture ring... but for the price I can't complain.

Tokina AF 193 19-35mm ?/3.5-4.5: Excellent wide angle for film and FX format for an unbelievably reasonable price. Build quality is superior to my more expensive Nikkor lenses.

Nikon SB50 DX Speedlight: Good speedlight that I bought a few years ago before Nikon announced the SB600 and decided to axe backward compatibility. No TTL with the D90 :(.

My favourite lens (the 50mm) is also the cheapest of the bunch. That's life.

Potomac River at Scotts' Run, Va

Tamron 28-300VC on Canon 10D, ISO400 dcraw F8 1/1000s 375mm effective.

...I took this about a year and a half ago, just getting around to posting some of these shots...

This is H7 for highlight recovery then a 1.25eV push in software. I didn't even adjust the levels or contrast because I wanted to preserve the color of the rocks. Ok maybe I could have used a selective push here, but still. As far as relative intensity, "brightness", whatever, this is "au natural". Besides there are just trees behind the rocks, anyway. And this way they stand-out better :)

Anyway the point that I would make here is that ignoring the weak AF on the 10D (it worked ok here) it is clear that the G9 at 12MP has much more fine-detail than the 6MP 10D. The 10D is "adequate" in terms of resolution but the higher-MP cameras are clearly much better at putting pixels on the scene, assuming, of course, that you shoot raw and don't let the camera throw the fine-detail away before you even see it.

Even if you want to go with a cheap subframe for effective focal-length (it's much shorter to say "FOV" but not quite clear what I mean...I mean the FOV that you get with the FOV crop on a subframe) I'd still have to go with an A200 or 30D to start with, as the AF is just much better on both cameras than on the 10D. The 10D may be cleaner than the A200 and free of streak-noise in continuous-drive at high ISO unlike the 30D, but it just misses focus too easily too often especially at longer focal-lengths. Were it not for that, it would make a decent "beater" DSLR. And not to ride the point into the ground a decent subframe and decent IS superzoom can "pick -out" a lot of good shots in open spaces, like I did here, just standing on the bank of the Potomac shooting up and down the river, without being too slow & too noisy for most of the shots that I'd want to take, in at least halfway-decent light. Of course, once the sun goes down below the horizon it's going to get slow and/or noisy real fast while with a fullframe you'd still have a stop of light left to shoot handheld. Technically as long as you can find a focus and hold the camera steady you can take shots handheld in the dark with any camera, but what you will get as a result will clearly be better with a fullframe than a p&s. Doesn't matter how fast the lens is or how low the resolution, a p&s is still going to be more noisy in the dark than a DSLR and a subframe is still going to be more noisy than a fullframe. Again, as always when I talk about shots in the abstract, when shooting raw. I rarely if ever, ever ever use NR on my shots. I'd rather come back with a tripod.

Now, I suppose, there are a lot of people out there wondering whether they should shelve their 28-70 and 18-55 F2.8 IS lenses and get a LX3. I say "go for it, go out and take some shots, come back and tell me how you like them". It doesn't matter what you buy, there will be a point at which you have enough light to shoot handheld & get the shot that you want and have it look decent, and below that point it will be too dark and the shot will come out looking like shit. Likewise, any given lens will at times be just right and at times either too slow, too long or too short. There is no "one size fits all" solution. the main things are to a) get a camera that focuses reliably b) know your gear and c) shoot within the limits of your gear and technique. And that means *pushing* the limits of your gear *and* your technique and making sure that you get up to those limits and get the best shot that you can get.

You and only you are the only one who can truly decide whether you need a lens that's a stop faster or one that has a focal-length range that's 3x longer. I left the 24-70 and 17-55 F2.8 IS lenses behind a long time ago, to me the extra stop of speed was very-clearly not worth that massive compromise in terms of focal-length. It essentially turned that big-ass heavy-ass expensive lens on top of a big, expensive DSLR into a big-ass, heavy-ass expensive p&s (and I'm thinking Fuji A350). Compare the LX3 to an A350, it's got a slightly-bigger sensor with twice the MP and a lens that's 1 stop faster at the wide-end and 24-70mm effective (with IS) vs 35-105 mm effective (without IS). Oh and it costs 5x as much, even more than a G9 or G10. Does that make sense to you? It doesn't make sense to me.

I would take a 24-125mm effective F2.8-F5 IS p&s with 5MP that can shoot raw, though, especially with a flip LCD, and that's pretty-much what the G11 is. I would *definitely* take a 28-125mm effective F2.8-F5 IS p&s with 15MP *without* the flip-LCD, which is *exactly* what the G10 is. And I'm not entirely sure that I prefer that to the G9. But you have to admit is neat is that you could buy an LX3 and a G10 off eBay for the retail price of just one and shoot them both and see which one you really like. Unlike with a fullframe

Baltimore Inner Harbor/Fells Point, night

Baltimore Inner Harbor/Fells Point, night

[D700/Tamron 28-300VC handheld ISO6400 1/20s 240mm F6.3 ->dcraw-ufraw linear 0.01 gamma 0.55 > gimp usm r1.0-s0.80-t15]

This was an experiment to see if I could see any real difference from processing in "16-bit mode" on a 24-bit display. So I found out that ufraw is 16-bit native, and can save files out in 16-bit uncompressed tiff format. I used it to convert the 14-bit NEF file [is there a way to tell if the file is compressed, in software?] and focused on getting the deep-shadow information with the above mods to the gamma-curve. I kept the contrast reasonably good in UFraw knowing that in the end it would need contrast, then saving to jpeg and continuing on in Gimp for alignment. After that and after playing around with pushing it even more in Gimp, I ended-up just leaving the exposure there and adding a touch of contrast and a mild USM.

Actually this isn't bad...you can see that it's a little soft away from center but this is hardly bad at all for these shooting-parameters...HANDHELD. It wasn't like I was standing there with an effing tripod taking this shot. You could hardly do better than this with this lens, except to shoot it at F11 ISO400 maybe. And sorry there's almost no light here. I've tried that and it really doesn't look a whole-lot better, just slightly less soft away from center. Assuming there's no wind, a good focus and no drift in the tripod. but yes I definitely intend to try this once more with my G9 on a tripod even though it will be diffraction-limited at this focal-length. One thing I expect is that I can get "near-daylight" exposures (not to mention HDR) if I use a tripod.

Combine the D700 with the ability to push the shots on-computer, and it will give you shots that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The big disadvantage is in the lens and linear-resolution, it will never be as sharp or have the same resolution as human vision. Not to mention the effects of the stupid 500x400 pixel format above. So it's not like the D700 isn't an awesome tool (though it might be even better with body-IS), it's more of a question of how good of a shot do you need. If this isn't good enough for you then you're going to have to use, at least, a 70-200 F4 VR...the list goes on and on...I could probably get this handheld with a 70-200 F2.8 VR... :)

But really the question is whether you are into photography to torture yourself buying and carrying expensive, heavy gear to get your shots, or just to "get around", have fun and take some good pics along the way. There definitely are lenses that can get this shot and get it well on the D700, and certainly a tripod could be used.

Is this sort of scene worth all that?

Or is it better to just not try to take pictures of every damm thing that looks interesting? This scene is actually very nice, really, when seen in person. With a wider lens, the ability to walk around the trees, and turn your head...very nice. A devil to shoot well, though. And yes, I will have to shoot it once more with my G9 on a tripod, just to see how good a shot a relatively-cheap camera can produce in ideal conditions.
Just for the record. Because I want to know. And I suspect that a lot of this is pure "geekness". Guys constantly researching, buying and testing expensive hardware and shooting it under awkward conditions. Instead of just taking interesting shots, that are interesting for reasons other than how complex and difficult the shots were, or how expensive, complex and difficult to master the gear was that they used. Meanwhile we don't want to just carry a tripod and use it with our little p&s cameras, even if that would actually give us the best shot, because that would make us look like nerds even more, on top of the fact that tripods are annoying to carry & use. And then we rationalize buying DSLRs and big expensive lenses anyway because they are cleaner and hypothetically sharper with better optical properties than a p&s so "technically" the shots would be better.

But what percentage of the IQ comes from just using a tripod and making good choices with the camera settings and in post-processing, and what percentage comes from using a high-quality DSLR and lens? We can't know this unless we are at least willing to try our sophisticated shooting and PP techniques with relatively "cheap" gear. Only then can we really know the price/performance advantages of expensive gear. If there are any, for the shots that we want to take.

Oh and there's one other question: what if Canon or Nikon or someone made a p&s around a 1/1.6" sensor that *otherwise* was just as good, quality-wise, as their top-of-the-line DSLR and lenses? What if there was an "L" equivalent? Would you happily shoot that with a tripod, or prefer instead to send the extra money just so you could be seen shooting their 1DsMk4 and L lenses...on a tripod if necessary? :) Do those "rinky-dink" little

(My) Nikon D40 Remote

(My) Nikon D40 Remote

So, I needed a remote for my D40. Here it is!
It cost me €5,99 (instead of the €20+ for a Nikon remote).

It's small, and the red (power) button works as it should.

I know, it's not tiny or pretty as the Nikon ML-L3, but it works for me. I might just use it a few times per year.

--
More info:
The BULB mode works with this remote, once this is set up on the camera (increasing the exposure to it's maximum). Press the first time to start shooting, press the second time, and it ends shooting.

The British went around the fort three years later and seized Charleston, which it held until the end of the war. In 1861 the fort was held by Maj. Robert Anderson, who nervously watched secessionists gather in Charleston, before retreating his troops to Ft. Sumter. Guns at Ft. Moultrie would participate in bombarding Ft. Sumter and starting the American Civil War. Before and after the war it was used as a prison for Native Americans, including Seminole Chief Osceola who remains buried there.

Current State of Endoscopic Therapies in Barrett's Esophagus and Esophageal Cancer (DOI: 10.3810/hp.2011.02.388) (Postgraduate Medicine)

Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a premalignant condition that predisposes patients to esophageal adenocarcinoma. This risk increases with increasing dysplasia, especially in patients with BE and high-grade dysplasia. Radical esophagectomy had long been the only option for these patients; however, it has been associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Endoscopic therapies have been increasingly used as an alternative to radical esophagectomy given the minimally invasive nature and tolerability of the procedure relative to surgery. Currently, the most widely used endoscopic therapies include endoscopic mucosal resection, photodynamic therapy, CryoSpray ablation, and radiofrequency ablation. Retrospective and prospective studies on the use of each of these modalities in patients with nondysplastic BE, dysplastic BE, and early esophageal cancer have demonstrated their effectiveness in eradication of dysplasia with or without reversion of Barrett’s epithelium to normal squamous epithelium of the esophagus. These modalities are well tolerated, safe, and have few side effects. Ultimately, more research is needed regarding their ability to fully displace surgical intervention as the gold standard, although at this point their role in poor operative candidates or patients seeking conservative approaches remains promising.

Coolidge Corner Theater, Brookline shot with Panasonic GH1 and stock 14-140 lens

Coolidge Corner Theater, Brookline shot with Panasonic GH1 and stock 14-140 lens

First "test" shot with the GH1 and 14-140mm kit zoom lens.

I've been eyeing on getting an HD camcorder for a while. I just couldn't decide between a flash memory based consumer camcorder, like the Canon HF-S21 or the GH1 that could be modded to shoot at a higher bitrate (44 Mbps vs Canon's 28 Mbps) and is capable of shooting with various lenses using adapters.

I ended up getting a GH1 which I immediately modded to "GH13" capable of shooting native 24p at 1080p. If I had purchased a camcorder, I'd still have to carrying around another camera to get good photos. With GH1, I have a good digital camera as well as a very capable digital video camera.

My immediate thoughts on the camera:

I like the image quality. Is it as good as the DP2s? It's hard to tell from 1024px size images but up close at original sizes, DP2s is better--but, I plan to shoot with better, prime lenses and I suspect the quality will be as good if not surpass DP2s' IQ. GH1 has a very quick focus, and shutter lag is much better than DP2s but slower than Canon 5DMk2 (as expected).

I really like the articulating screen. The menu is very clear and easy to follow. There are also plenty of analog buttons for quick adjustments--such as, focus mode, aperture dial, AE/AF lock, designated video button, and single/burst/timer settings, etc. The camera is about the size of the GF1 but slightly thicker because of the articulating screen and has a more protruding hand grip, which feels good. The lens is quite and long when extended to 140mm, but it doesn't look as unbalanced as the SONY NEX and its kit zoom lens.

As for the video, I don't really like AVCHD format which GH1 uses. I'm a Mac user and I MUCH prefer Quicktime .MOV, H.264 format Canon uses. AVCHD is a pain because I am forced to edit the movie on more expensive editing software (like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere) or I'd have to transcode the .mts (AVCHD file) to MOV with lower nitrate.

I haven't shot enough to write more about the camera. But, my immediate thoughts are, it seems like a really good, all around usable camera I could take with me when I travel and don't want to carry a large DSLR.

Height and width of a car is 6 and 20 meters, respectively. When you use the HD camcoder in portrait, it requires about 10 shots (including overlaps) to cover a car. The camcoder records 30 frames per second, that is, 20 meter corresponds to 1/3 seconds. In other words, maximum train speed to be captured is 60m/sec = 216km/h, is enough to capture the Shinkansen! (Of course shutter speed must be fast enough, i.e. you have to take video at very bright place.)

I learnt the technical problem of digital slitscan by this work. Next time I will make original software to stitch video frames into a train shot.

Missing you every day Mum x

Missing you every day Mum x

At this moment 5 years ago I was blissfully unaware that my world was about to crash around me but it had already happened. The world had changed and my life would be sadder every day because of it, I just didn’t know it yet.

13 days earlier we were celebrating Mum & Dad’s silver anniversary. My brother & I threw a surprise party and 180 people came. It was fabulous. All our family & friends were there, people Mum & Dad hadn’t seen for years came, people came from all over the country. It was a brilliant night and such a surprise for them. We all enjoyed it. I didn’t have a professional photographer at the party so have only got snaps taken by other people on pretty crappy cameras but who cares about the quality of the shot? The most important thing is that the moments were captured.

3 months previously it had just come to me one day that we should throw them a party. I can’t even remember the exact moment, I just remember saying to my Brother that I thought it was about time we threw a party for Mum & Dad as over the years they’ve had hundreds if not thousands of parties so maybe it would be nice to have one that was all about them.

My brother agreed enthusiastically and the plan had begun. We had a venue in mind immediately and the date was available there. We had a family friend who’s an after dinner speaker do a brilliant speech about them, all our musical family members performed different songs and party pieces about them and I created a photo slide show to play on a big screen, it was a great night. My best friend and her boyfriend videoed the whole event too.

In the days after the party my Mum wrote a thank you letter to every guest and she couldn’t stop smiling at the memories of how much fun it had been. She’d had an absolute ball and so had Dad. My brother and I were pretty chuffed with ourselves and revelled in the glory of our good work!

The following week or so was great, we spent loads of time together as a family and on the 20th January my auntie flew home from America where she works for the Foreign office, she’s probably a spy but she says she’s not! ;-) She couldn’t make it home for the date of the party so came back as soon after that as she could to see the family - which was the 20th.

As our auntie had arrived that night my brother, my granny & I were all at Mum & Dad’s to see her and we had a great night. We cooked haggis and my brother played his guitar for everyone. It was really unusual for my brother to be off work on a Thursday night but amazingly that had ended up being his night off that week so we had a lovely relaxed family evening together. I took my brother, granny & auntie home so we all left the house at the same night, kissing Mum & Dad goodbye.

The next morning the phone on my desk rang and my Dad told me to come home immediately. I asked why on earth I’d have to come to the house in the middle of the morning and he said something was wrong. It was Mum. I immediately panicked. I asked him what was wrong and he just said “please come home” my boss had come out of his office when he’d seen my face and as I gathered my bag and coat I told him what my Dad had said. He tried to reassure me that things were probably ok but I know my Dad. He’s not a worrier and he was worried on the phone, I’d never heard him sound like that and I knew something was terribly wrong. The fear that was building in my stomach was sickening. The panic running through me was terrifying and as I got in my car the tears were streaming down my face. I am not religious. In fact I would say I’m pretty much the opposite of religious but I talked out loud the whole way home begging and pleading for it not to be anything too bad. A thousand scenarios were possible, I couldn’t work out what I hoped, I don’t think I thought for a moment that she could actually be gone. I drove quite slowly home. I normally drive quite fast but I was very aware that if I crashed then it would take me EVEN longer to get home so I drove carefully. I don’t think I wanted to hear what I was about to be told.

I walked to the front door and my Dad opened it before I got there and in the vestibule he told me Mum had died. I couldn’t believe that it could be true. She was there in the house last night, we were all together. I wanted to know where she was but he said she was gone.

In the living room my brother and my auntie were already standing waiting on me. We couldn’t believe what was happening and just stood there in tears.

It transpired that Mum had gone for a bath at some point after we had left. Dad had gone to bed & gone to sleep then in the morning when his alarm went off he stepped out of bed and into water. The whole house was flooded. He went to the bathroom and found Mum in the bath. He tried frantically to resuscitate her but she was gone. When the ambulance and police arrived they asked if they could call anyone for him. He didn’t want my brother or me to come to t

How did you know, oh stop spying! Oh junk mail[Day236]*

No ideas today!
Then I got the mail - this came FOR ME! Ha, what? Ironically my shirt kind of "matched".

Damn my sensor is dirty [and yes, I'm too chicken for cleaning it myself] basically anywhere in my house but the bathrooms isn't lit enough anymore - it turns out *SO* dark and you can see the dust *EW*. Sending the XT baby in "soon" - gotta decide a good week I can like live without it. I'll have my point and shoot but still... my Mom wants to start using that. So she agreed the 50 dollar "four day" service is better than using my free service [from Best Buy plan] that could take a few weeks! Har har . . . true life of a girl addicted 'ta her camera.
