Trumpet Valve Springs
Tabebuia impetiginosa (T. palmeri).
Species: Tabebuia impetiginosa, Tabebuia palmeri, Handroanthus impetiginosus
Common name: Pink trumpet tree
The pink trumpet tree, Tabebuia impetiginosa, is a deciduous, flowering tree that develops a rounded and open canopy. It is commonly grown and seen in landscapes in Central and South Florida. It flowers in early spring, producing dense clusters of pink flowers. It’s usually bare of leaves when it flowers, so the tree appears covered in blooms at its peak.
The foliage appears after flowering and consists of palmate leaves with five to seven leaflets. Seedpods are slender and can be 6- to 12-inches long. Inside are papery seeds, which are easily germinated.
Spectacular in spring when the tree is leafless and covered in large clusters of very pale pink to pink frilly flowers and there is a carpet of pink on the ground. The compound leaves have 5-7 leaflets, digitately arranged, and the margin is usually somewhat toothed. In this species there is a distinct contrast between the pink of the petal lobes and the yellow throat which tends to become pink with age. Capsule has thick smooth valves and may be up to 56 cm long.
