Schoenhut White 30 Key Classic Baby Grand with Bench

Schoenhut White 30 Key Classic Baby Grand with Bench

How many children have their "very own" Baby Grand Piano? Encourage your child to be creative at the piano and he or she will be composing and playing ballads just like Schroeder in the comic strip "Peanuts." This unique miniature version is designed to encourage the very young to play and develop a love of music.
Chromatically tuned with a full two-octave span, small hammers strike metal rods, producing lovely chime-like tones. The piano never gets out of tune and the tone never changes. The Learning System, with its play-by-color assortment of songs, is designed to bring immediate success. A removable color-coordinated strip fits behind the keys to guide small fingers from chord to chord. As your child learns and grows, the color strip can be transferred to a larger piano, since the keys on Schoenhut Toy Pianos are of corresponding width. This teaches children proper "finger stretch" from the very beginning. The accompanying Songbook contains a collection of familiar tunes. This Learning System has been specially designed to build a child's confidence and develop basic playing skills. Includes hardwood and hardboard. Measures 20"L x 20"W x 19"H.

HIRUNDINES
A poem dedicated to the
memory of Gilbert White

Giles Watson
2004

Author’s Note:

I am indebted not only to Gilbert White for his Natural History of Selborne (1788), but also to Richard Mabey for his article on White and the hirundines in B.B.C. Wildlife, Volume 21, Number 6, June 2003, p. 17, which first alerted me to the allegorical nature of the eighteenth century clergyman’s writings on these birds. Mabey points out that whilst White’s letters were read as scientific papers before the Royal Society, their subtext is concerned with “some of the great themes of life”, especially the life of a middle-aged bachelor”. This poem depends to a great degree on Mabey’s interpretation of the allegorical meaning of White’s hirundines: “The house martin is a story of livelihood, of a proper balance between work and play… The swallow’s tale is of family life, the thing White never had… The sand martin… hints at the otherness and mystery of nature… [and the Swift is an allegory of] the wildness of nature, and the freedom White missed at Selborne, lacking like-minded neighbours and cursed by coachsickness.”

For the purposes of this poem, as for White, the hirundines (or hirondelles, as Mabey calls them) are a disparate family of birds united by similar characteristics, and once thought to be related. Amongst them, the swift is now regarded as belonging to quite another category. Taxonomic purists are therefore asked to suspend their incredulity for Gilbert White’s sake. Likewise, Gilbert White’s belief that hirundines must hibernate during the winter months, which has been long disproved, has been accepted here because of its historical—as opposed to scientific—accuracy.

Section 2 of this poem was written in the field, using a notebook much as an artist uses a sketchbook, in the course of a blissful day-trip to Selborne with my partner Jeannie. The later sections of the poem deal with the hirundines in turn. In keeping with the spirit of the parson-naturalist, for whom priesthood must primarily have represented an opportunity for indulgence in natural history, and for whom the doctrines (and perhaps, in White’s case, the morals as well) of Christianity so often assumed secondary importance, but whose lives were necessarily punctuated by the daily offices and the communion service, I have felt free to take certain liberties with texts from the Book of Common Prayer.

G. Watson, Isles of Scilly, 26th June 2004.

1

Shall we take the old road,
where the green helleborine
nestles among ferns, where
ladies fear to go, for fear
of ghosts, and gentry shall not go
in snow? Shall we weave
through lime-slab gripping
roots of weathered oaks,
and beeches holding flints
within their grips? Where
dew drips three hours after dawn,
and snakes go not, for fear
of torpor? Shall we go,
bypass the house, and the museums,
and come, at last,
to the Long Lythe, where
the ground dips to the stream
from Gilbert’s grave?

Sit here, and watch
his hirundines wheel
where human dreams
have failed.

2

Beech woods fringed
with milk-spilt elder;
jackdaws chack and clatter,
rooks utter blackness,
eggshells spill from nests,
cracked and bloodied,
the life writhed from them.

The world widens, from
the twice-five petalled campion,
the sulphured ranunculus,
the spiked sedge, over
Oakhanger Stream, by way
of ash and birch, through
flags in forests of spiked green,
half encased in folding sepals.

Fringed by ragged robins
spanned by spiders’ webs,
and primeval equisetum,
sun-bleached lady’s smocks -
measured infinitessimally
by spindled skaters, tadpoles
and toadlets, writhing in clumps,
bug-eyed waterboatmen,
waterspiders with silvered bellies -
ponds mirror open sky,
where hirundines wheel,
and seem to swim, inverted,
under water.

But the hirundines
are not as they would have been:
devil’s birds, bills clapping
on swarms of insects undescribed,
gulping uncatalogued midges
like whales sifting krill. Let us
recreate them, while we can:

3

Whether it be, he wrote, as sport,
A treat to take away the toil
Of long migration, (or, and well
May a man, middle aged
And grown rheumatic, favour this:
To warm the blood, grown cold
From long benumbing),
House martins like to play
Before they turn to mansion building.

“Aerobatics before architecture,”
Their twitter seems to say,
Like grasshoppers chiding ants
For toiling all the day.

But then they set to mud daubing,
Their bills turned spatulas,
Deft and minute, testing consistency,
Flitting untwittering to the eaves
Each with a bib of gathered mud
Primed for plastering. Then clinging
With legs feathered to the toes,
Begin the building, layer on layer,
Lump on lump - but not for too long,
For houses built in haste
Must fall, when they are made
From clay. Paste a little, let it
Harden every day. Keep the rest
To seek the sun, and play.

Twelve days to construct a hemisphere:
Rustic work, no finished

    ultrasound
  • Ultrasound is cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. Although this limit varies from person to person, it is approximately 20 kilohertz (20,000 hertz) in healthy, young adults and thus, 20 kHz serves as a useful lower limit in describing ultrasound.

  • Sound or other vibrations having an ultrasonic frequency, particularly as used in medical imaging

  • very high frequency sound; used in ultrasonography

  • An ultrasound scan, esp. one of a pregnant woman to examine the fetus

  • sonography: using the reflections of high-frequency sound waves to construct an image of a body organ (a sonogram); commonly used to observe fetal growth or study bodily organs

  • a grammatical category in inflected languages governing the agreement between nouns and pronouns and adjectives; in some languages it is quite arbitrary but in Indo-European languages it is usually based on sex or animateness

  • Gender is the wide set of characteristics that are seen to distinguish between male and female. It can extend from sex to social role or gender identity. As a word, "gender" has more than one valid definition.

  • The property (in nouns and related words) of belonging to such a class

  • (in languages such as Latin, Greek, Russian, and German) Each of the classes (typically masculine, feminine, common, neuter) of nouns and pronouns distinguished by the different inflections that they have and require in words syntactically associated with them. Grammatical gender is only very loosely associated with natural distinctions of sex

A Walk Through Nature

A Walk Through Nature

Week 10/52
I'm finally getting back into this..
I feel like I've been dead to flickr for 2 weeks, I'm gonna change that and catch up on everyone's streams!

Today was so much fun. I originally was a tad disappointed at how everything turned out, but I'm starting to love all of the days picture. This is like the forbidden forrest! And out of everyone, we would be the ones to go walking around a forbidden forest hahaha:) Isabella's the best, and she's a great photographer. I always have fun and end up in strange situations with her. Today we walked into a bird watcher who told us that there's a "Planet X" that knows when all natural disasters are going to happen and a radio station connected with it and found out about the tsunami in Japan. He said the next bad thing that will happen is going to be on May 15th. He told me he thought the work was normal until the end of the 90's. "I knew the world was messed up before 9/11." He's totally out of his effing mind. I told my dad and he thought I was smoking something! But this totally reminded me of the movie Knowing, with the dates and locations. I'm a little freaked out. If May 15th has some natural disaster i'm going to fear my life. But thoughts go out to those in Japan.

So since there was no major description on last weeks picture, I'll do a major major description on this one...
I was feeling a bit stressed. I don't know why. Last week HSPA's let me go in late 3 out of the five days of the week. Basically no homework. Thats why I'm especially disappointed at last weeks picture. i had so many opportunities to go out and shoot. Whatever. Tennis season started. Tryouts are killer. It's so mental. I made varsity last year, but you have to re-try out, which absolutely sucks. I want to do well, it's all that matters to me. What's helping me through is music. I don't know why or how, but I've come to have a new found appreciation for modern day, mainstream music. I used to hate it, but I can't get it out of my head! Usher, Jbiebs, drake, and more. It all the pumps me up, makes me feel good about myself and happy. Leave me your favorite mainstream song!

I'm happy with my life as of now. I could be happier. But you can't always get what you want. I just can't even describe my feelings. I'm just so happy about everything.

cause baby tonight, the dj's got us falling in love agaiiiiiinn.

My little girl was so in tune with me. She hugged me. She told me it's going to be ok. She made sure I was ok.

Brushing Your Teeth Can Be Fun: And Lots of Other Good Ideas for How to Grow Up Healthy, Strong, and Smart

It takes a Herculean effort to get my child to: a) brush his or her teeth b) go to sleep c) take a bath d) eat his or her vegetables. If any (or all) of these apply, continue reading. From the treasure chest of Munro Leaf comes another classic in which the beloved author and illustrator uses his time-proven method of talking to children straight—simply getting them to see it how it is. In Brushing Your Teeth Can Be Fun (originally published in 1943 as Health Can Be Fun), Leaf leaves his audience in no doubt that not only can health be fun, but good sense, as well. This book will help boys and girls understand why they should drink their milk, eat their vegetables, get exercise, go to bed on time, brush their teeth, keep clean, and a dozen other things both big and small that are important to building strong, healthy, and happy bodies. With his trademark stick figure drawings and witty text, Leaf will once again elicit peals of mirthful laughter from his little readers, not to mention some big ones who will find this humorous hygiene handbook an indispensable aid in the all-too-familiar night-time (come to think of it, all the time) war with their children about the merits of keeping good health.

I have been working off-and-on on this crocheted blanket for more than two years. It was originally conceived as a baby blanket, but I made it too big and underestimated just how long it would take to work up with such small yarn (size 3 cotton). But I love the pattern. And since its 100% cotton it will get softer and softer as it gets washed over time. I think I can get it done in time for the 'baby's' third birthday! Yay!

Taking this photo was highly entertaining. I had to sit the camera on my balcony (aka boobs). Its really hard to settle a camera on such a soft round surface! LOL! I also had to hold my breath while waiting for the camera timer to wind down and trigger the shot. Photographing crochet is not as easy as actually doing the crochet. :-)

This is one of my favorite baby blanket patterns. I started off with a soft multi-colored yarn and accented it with a light yellow color.

The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby

The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby

Your baby is yet to be born... but she's listening, learning, and aware of the outside world! Traditionally, the world of an as-yet-unborn baby was thought to be an isolated and silent one. It was assumed that, asleep and growing in its mother's womb, the developing baby was incapable of experiencing sight, sound, thought, or emotion. In fact, the truth is very different, as bestselling author Nikki Bradford reveals here. Drawing on the latest research by leading authorities in the field, the author explains how the unborn baby's awareness of the outside world develops rapidly from very early in pregnancy. Did you know that unborn babies respond to sound, and duck away from strong light, as early as 16 weeks? That they have been observed shying away from-and even attacking--an amniocentesis needle at around the same time? That babies follow moving light sources with their hands by 20 weeks? Or that they recognize music and nursery rhymes from 33 weeks? The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby not only offers mothers-to-be unique insights into their child's remarkable mental and physical developments in the womb, but also provides wide-ranging information on pregnancy and childbirth for the mother. This information is featured in comprehensive sections on:
How babies grow, week-by-week: Stunning color photographs enable mothers-to-be to follow the physical development of their baby. Did you know that the first heartbeat can be detected at about five weeks, and that fingernails appear by ten weeks?
Your pregnancy and birth: Just how does the mother's body cope with it all? Advice and information are provided on every stage of pregnancy.
What babies can do in the womb: The latest research findings about unborn babies' emotional awareness and learning abilities; the evidence of communication (and telepathy) between babies and mothers.
What unborn babies know: What babies hear, sense, experience, dream-and remember-about being born and being in the womb. Looks at babies' emotional development, including reactions to their mothers' various moods.
Nikki Bradford has written The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby in consultation with leading experts in the field: San Diego-based Dr. David B. Chamberlain, President of the International Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health, and arguably the world authority on prenatal psychology; Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain, past President of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom; and Dr. Sammy Lee, an acclaimed London-based consultant embryologist.

weePod™, The iPod Baby Belt

weePod™, The iPod Baby Belt

weePod™, The iPod Baby Belt

I had this great idea for a "(You're almost a) Mother's Day" gift. I looked everywhere for a set of headphones, specifically designed for wearing on a pregnant belly. It seems that no such thing exists. So in a true fit of manly rage, I broke out the power tools. (Okay, I broke out the Janome power tool, but that reciprocating needle could really do some damage!)

The result is a plastic clasped 2 inch wide elastic belt with a pocket loop for an iPod and six strategically placed button holes. The button holes allow you to insert headphones so that you can play music to your unborn baby.

This a really popular idea, I'm surprised someone doesn't market such a product. If you are interested, feel free to contact me.

He brought light and laughter into the lives of all he touched

Yesterday a friend of my son and daughter in law lost his life in a freak accident. While in Arkansas on their yearly trip over Memorial Day weekend, he fell off a cliff...this is the last that I have heard. He and his wife, Kammie, have been married for about 8 years and for the last 7 have been trying to have a baby. They lost 2 before she could carry to term. She is now 16 weeks pregnant and I am asking God that He allows her to carry this baby and that it will be healthy when born. Please say a prayer for Kammie, their unborn and for all that have lost a very bright light in their lives. He was only in his mid 30s. Rest in peace, Bruce. I shall miss you, your smile, humor and fried turkey so much!

Meditations for Pregnancy: 36 Weekly Practices for Bonding with Your Unborn Baby

The relationship between mother and child begins the moment a woman learns she is pregnant. Meditations for Pregnancy is a beautiful tool for mothers-to-be to enhance that relationship, nurture their bodies through a healthy pregnancy, and focus their thoughts on a joyful birth experience.
Pregnancy can inspire an overwhelming host of emotions. A woman may feel excitement about the new life growing inside her, yet apprehension about the changes it will bring. Her body is expanding; her hormones are out of control. Everyone offers unsolicited advice. What she really needs is a way to calm her fears, center her thoughts, and focus her mind on her prenatal child.
Meditations for Pregnancy is written by an expert in pregnancy and birthing to provide guidance and comfort to the mother-to-be throughout the weeks of her pregnancy. For each week, beginning with the fifth, the book provides a thoughtful meditation that speaks to the specific needs and joys of that phase of pregnancy. Inspirational quotations and a short affirmation accompany each meditation, along with a brief description of the development of the growing fetus that week.
Best of all, an audio CD features a 20-minute guided meditation to calm the expectant mom's emotions. It is read by the author and accompanied by soothing music. Meditations for Pregnancy is a wonderful way for women to explore their feelings, calm their nerves, and bond with their babies-all in preparation for the transformative experience of birth.

Robson Arms: The Complete First Season

Robson Arms is a half-hour dramedy series that follows the lives of the tenants in a once-grand low-rise in Vancouvers eclectic West End. Robson Arms is about community and all the word implies: people sharing a space and place; sometimes connected, some

Robson Arms is a Canadian Seinfeld-meets-Neighbors, with a little Three's Company thrown in for good wink-wink, nudge-nudge measure. The series follows the lives of the inhabitants of one particularly diverse residential building in Vancouver, British Columbia. The apartments themselves range from the Architectural Digest-ready bachelor pad of the snooty attorney to the barely livable hovel just inhabited by the single-mom nurse and her precocious son. (The nurse uses a far saltier term for the ratty apartment than "hovel," part of the charm of the series.) Each series focuses on a different inhabitant and his or her soapy love life, hidden agenda, and foibles, with just enough interaction to hold the viewer from week to week. A standout is young Justine Wong, who plays tween house "detective," Ruby. And the dialogue is entertainingly ribald; one young boy tosses off a line about his dad as "in Burnaby shacked up with jailbait." The extra bite makes Robson Arms wickedly addictive. --A.T. Oma part 2

Oma part 2

Eventually the war was over, but not the story, they were all kept in a prisoner of war camp for a further 12 months Oma along with her children. There was no correspondence from her husband and it was not clear whether he was still alive.

Like all good fairy tales they were all reunited again and started a life on a beautiful property in the hills outside Surabaya, only to be displaced again when the uprising happened and the Dutch were thrown out of Indonesia. By Grandparents and their children mover to Borneo and settled there for some time before moving to New Guinea. They planned a final move move to Australia with their sons Michael and Fritz. Sadly my grandmother came to Australia on her own, as my grandfather died just before there were to move.
Through all these things I believe she had the right to be an angry person, yet her words to me were always,” for everything bad that happens to you my darling, something good will happen to even it out.
When my daughter Candice was diagnosed with Leukaemia she said those very words again. Sadly Candice and Oma are no longer with me, but my life is wonderful and blessed for having known them and their love.
Oma died at the ripe old age of 95 still telling me to have faith in the world and love everyone, not just those we have something in common with. She is an inspiration to me today and all my days.

She taught me the importance of folklore

My Oma gave me a greater understanding of folklore and the reason behind so many of the fairy tales that we tell our children now. Oma told us stories before we went to sleep every night that we stayed with her. I can remember her saying “Which Story would you like today?” to the noisy bickering of my brother and I who could never decide on the same story at the same time. Favourites were Hansel and Gretel, a story told to children so that they did not venture into the forest and speak to strangers when people still really believed in Witches and mystical influences. The 7 little goats a story told to children when there were no baby sitters available and parents sometimes had to leave home to get food and supplies.
Cinderella, a story of fairness and hope against adversity.
When we read these stories to our children in the modern world, there are still real messages that are important for their safety.
My Oma would often get out a book with graphic pictures of what the lung of a smoker looked like. Not one of the four children in our family smoke, could this be the reason.
Perhaps today when we try to soften stories for our children so not to scare them, we are doing them an injustice. I believe a good bit of fear can also be a constructive thing.
An example of this was a well that was in our neighbour’s yard. It was very deep and a considerable danger to us as children.
My Oma told me that the devil lived in the well and that they had covered it with a tin sheet so that nobody would fall in and be captive by the devil. This really did keep us away, the closest we ever got to the well was holding the ankles of the next door neighbours kids as they laid flat on the ground looking in the dark hole.

My Oma taught me many things that are still very important today.

· A great love for family and home

· Right from wrong

· How to cook without bottles or packets

· To believe that even in the most terrible of times there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

· To love everyone, even if they are different

· And a very special way to get rid of hiccups

· So many more things that I am still unfolding now at 47

I hope that I can impart some of the wonderful gifts that my Oma has taught me to my daughter. The world has become faster and more modern, but the important morals and core values that a grandparent can provide to their children is still the building blocks for a strong and resourceful life…..

Lucille Brace

Plaid*

Plaid*

So, yeah, I finally broke down and got new sneaks. I love them. I was going to get grey one's again, the same as my last pair, but they didn't have my size!! UGH! So I saw these awesome plaid ones and got these instead. But... as I knew it would be, I didn't have the heart to throw out my old pair, I love them so much, they are like perfect, they're all like broken in [which, well, was the problem, they were far too broken in but I didn't want to get rid of them. I love them. (I know I'm weird)], so I'm keeping them for like don't know... yard work? (You must know, I have never done yard work. A little gardening for my mother, picking apples and berries and such, but not much else.) So, yeah you thought you had finally escaped from having to see pictures of my crappy shoes on Flickr; yeah, that's not likely.

About the Quilt...

About the Quilt...

I took my first quilting class back in November from an awesome woman named Daphne. I learned so much from her! We used Daphne's "No Match Patch Quilt" pattern to make the quilts. This pattern is just FANTASTIC for beginners! I really enjoyed making this "scrappy" quilt.

Because I was so busy, I opted to buy a fat quarter bundle that was at the quilt shop instead of putting together a FQ bundle myself. The top of the quilt is a mix of Amy Butler's Midwest Modern 1 & 2 fabric lines. The peach fabric with lavender polka dots is a Kaffe Fassett. The backing is made from one of my favorite prints. It's from Erin McMorris' Urban Gardens line. I was so excited to find the print at the quilt shop, I bought up the last couple yards that were left on the bolt. Not sure about the fabric that I used for the binding. Carol, at the quilt shop, brought out a few prints she thought would be nice as binding. I chose this one. I just liked that it was a rich, cheery yellow that added a "spring" touch to the quilt. As a suggestion from the quilting ladies at the sewing machine shop, I used King Tut Superior thread for the top of the quilt and Bottom Line thread in my bobbin. It worked fabulously. :)

I have to say, quilting the darn quilt was *the* most difficult and frustrating thing for me--even more so than marking up the quilt with blue painters tape! ha ha ha! Now I know why people have long arms or sewing machines with lots of throat space! I can't tell you how many times I ripped seams because of puckering. I finally asked Amanda (mrsmcporkchop) about what to do and she suggested more safety pins. Yay! That really helped! :)

I binded the quilt by hand. I need to learn to relax. My hands sweat a lot when I'm trying to be too perfect. My mom is such a very neat sewer and I wanted to make sure my stitching was just right (though she's such a mom--she really wouldn't care and would love it no matter what). Gaaaah...sweaty hands...I swear I turned the color of the binding gray in some areas! ha ha ha! I do need a lot of work on binding those mitered corners.

I now see why so many people love quilting. I love, love piecing the quilt. I love feeling, and gazing at the fabric. I love putting putting the blocks together. I love hand sewing. I love when it all comes together and I can hug the finished piece!!! (yeah, I'm weird) I'm hooked! :) I can't wait to sew another one.

Daphne's No Match Patch Quilt really was a great quilt to sew for the first time quilter! :) Thank you Daphne!!! :) She's right--you just can't put a price on the love and time you put into a quilt. It is like a baby! :) I definitely put a lot of love into this quilt. Oh...and most importantly, I'm glad to say, my mom loved the quilt!!! :) Yay!!! :)

As soon as I can take some decent pictures, I'll share photos of a work in progress from my first sashiko class!!! For some reason, taking pictures of those sashiko squares is not so easy. :P

For Erica's First

For Erica's First

My cousin Erica is expecting her first child. This is the quilt I made for baby.

I used only fabrics I had in my stash. The batting is a bit of a thrifted flannel sheet, making it warm but not terribly so as they live in a warm southern climate.

Quilted with yellow thread in a free-motion "pattern."

It's a dark, rainy day here and the flash didn't really do the quilt any justice.

my baby boy ds game - Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts is a completely original gameplay experience that anyone can play, offering fun for all ages with two styles of gameplay and more than 200 levels. In Scribblenauts, players use the Nintendo DS touch-screen to help their character Maxwell acquire the Starite in each level by solving a series of puzzles armed with their stylus, notepad and imagination. Players jot down the word for any object that comes to mind in order to reach the goal. Every object behaves as it would in the real world, and players can combine countless objects to create completely new scenarios. Every level has more than one written object to use as a solution, opening up the game to endless replay. In Scribblenauts, players advance through ten worlds, each with eleven puzzle and eleven action levels for a total of 220 challenges to complete. Each level has a “par” for the number of objects suggested to finish the level. Beating a level with under par, earns “Ollars”, the in-game currency, which players can use to purchase new levels and music.

Scribblenauts is a unique single player side-scrolling action game for the Nintendo DS that challenges players to solve spatially oriented puzzles like no game before it. In it players use an in-game notepad/keyboard, as well as the touch screen and stylus of the Nintendo DS, to conjure up solutions to the obstacles placed in the path of the game's hero. Solutions are manifested in the form of literally thousands of items--many very unexpected--that are called up and take on a life of their own, resulting in puzzle-solving that is limited only by the player's imagination.

Gameplay
Based around 2D side-scrolling action and word play, the premise of Scribblenauts is simple; quite literally, anything you write, you can use and reuse in the game. Players use the DS' touch-screen and the in-game notepad/keyboard to help their character, Maxwell, as he moves throughout 220 increasingly difficult levels on his never-ending quest for the star-like "Starites." But it is not as easy as reaching up and plucking a Starite. Attaining them requires Maxwell to solve spatially oriented puzzles. To do this players describe objects via the notepad/keyboard, which in turn appear on the game screen and facilitate the starite making its way to Maxwell. There are literally thousands of items in the game, both utilitarian like ladders, ropes, cars and buses, to the outlandish items, such as invisibility cloaks, pirates and black holes. There are time limits on levels, as well as a limitation to the number of items that can be used per level. But regardless of these restrictions, the game is all about experimentation, imagination and endless replay value as players open their minds to the nearly limitless possibilities that are sure to make Scribblenauts unlike any side-scrolling platformer they have ever played.
Key Features
Create Your Own Interactive Experience - Objects you write down in the game are only limited by your imagination.
Everyone Can Play - Scribblenauts features all-ages pick-up-and-play fun for everyone.
Touch-screen Controls - Easy to pick up and play on Nintendo DS. If you can tap, you can play.
Unlimited Replay Value - Use less objects to increase your score, or experiment with different objects for endless replay value. Write anything; solve everything.
Playground Mode - Play the entire game in a sandbox style right on the title screen.
Create and Share - Share levels you create with the level editor via your Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection.
Innovative New Title from Leading Developer - 5th Cell, the creator of the Drawn to Life franchise and Lock's Quest, has experience creating high-quality, innovative DS games.

Christmas at my brother's. I'm playing Yoshi's Island on my pink DS. My niece is playing a Dora The Explorer educational game on her Leapfrog. Her cousin (?) is on my right, also playing Yoshi's Island, but on his more butch black and blue DS, emblazoned with Penguin Club stickers.

Seriously, the adults scoffed at my pink DS and the purple sock with the monkey on it that I keep my camera in. And then the 4-year-old boy with the butch DS repeatedly asked me why I thought pink was cool, because it was a girl color. Hurray for gender roles!

He decided I was cool, nonetheless, because we were playing the same game, and when he would get stuck he'd make me finish the level for him. My niece had no problems with her game and happily did math while us boys twiddled our fingers and made Yoshi carry babies around.

My niece looks slightly squished because the two kids were arguing over who got to sit next to me. Her cousin wouldn't budge (it's hard to tell, but he's leaning on top of my arm) so she literally climbed over me and scrunched up on the end of the futon.

Final note: My dad took this picture with his digital camera, had a print made for me and I, having no access to the original JPG or a scanner, took a picture of the print with my camera. So: Digital picture of a hard copy of a digital picture. The future is sometimes baffling.

what did she get well spoilt, a pink DVD player for the car (well actually more for my sanity)
a pretend microwave oven with food that peeps and does all sorts of odd flashy things
a baby Hetty, a new raggy doll, a wand, and a play mobile, and her first set of make up
as well as the new shaun the sheep DVD and Timmy springtime Oh and the new Peppa pig DS game

The image its self is an attempt at breaking the rules by one shooting into the light and two not having the focus on the main subject

Baby-Faced Butchers

Baby-Faced Butchers

It was the murder that stunned even the most hardened New Yorkers. On May 23, 1997, affable realtor Michael McMorrow was strolling home through Central Park when he met up with two fresh-faced teens. The kids stabbed the 44-year-old thirty-four times, disembowelled him, and then threw his body into the lake. Overnight the brutal killing made spoiled rich girl Daphne Abdela and her working-class boyfriend Christopher Vasquez the most famous and reviled fifteen-year-olds in Manhattan. The case fuelled headlines from day one through the explosive trial. Both teens were found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and got ten years - but they served only six. In the civil suit against Vasquez and multimillionaire Abdela, McMorrow's family received just $60,000 dollars. The public was furious, the family was stunned - and the killers were remorseless. Featuring exclusive interviews with McMorrow's family, this is the definitive account of an appalling crime that arouses controversy even as it continues to horrify.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy: Or everything your doctor won't tell you

A humorous guide to the whole nine months for every mother-to-be. From the top ten lies to the long-awaited birth, tips are given on everything including morning sickness, maternity underwear, weight gain, pregnancy police, bladder control, pregnancy insanity and fear of turning into your mother.

Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz

Product Description
The first book to reveal how thinking like a designer can help solve the greatest challenges we face in business, society, and our daily lives.

The original version of this book was titled "Glimmer: How Design Can Transform Your Life, and Maybe Even the World."

An illuminating journey thorugh today's fascinating world of design.

What we learn from the ways great designers think-and how can it improve our lives? In CAD, Monkeys, Dinosaur Babies, and T-Shaped People Warren Berger, in collaboration with celebrated designer Bruce Mau, revolutionizes our understanding of design and unlocks the secrets of the trade. Looking to the creative problem-solving work of design professionals, Berger reveals that design is a mindset, a way of looking at the world with an eye toward improving it. The practice of design-thinking opens readers to their innate capacity for reimagining the world around them.

Glimmer takes readers on a journey through today's fascinating world of design, where the formerly distinct disciplines of graphic, product, and social design are undergoing "smart recombinations." In the cutting-edge studios of Mau and other visionaries, everything is ripe for reinvention-including the ways businesses function, children learn, and communities thrive. Designers are solving problems at an unprecedented pace today by using improved technology and the highly practical design principles described in this book, such as "Ask stupid questions," "Make hope visible," "Work the metaphor," "Embrace constraints," and "Begin anywhere." Glimmer inspires readers to apply these same principles to their own life challenges.

While celebrated designers work on re-creating the world, Berger reveals the growing grassroots "glimmer movement" in which everyday people are emerging as designers and problem solvers. Readers will be fascinated by how "transformation design" is reinventing companies and addressing thorny social problems. Berger shares stories of how burned fingers, wrenched backs, and mixed-up pills all led to ingenious new product designs.

In a time of anxiety and retrenchment, this hopeful yet hardheaded book illuminates "the glimmer of possibility and potential-that first spark of an innovative idea or a life-changing plan." According to Berger, "This faint light is all around us and also within us, if we can learn to recognize and nurture it." The best designers already know how to transform that glimmer of possibility into the steady glow of creation and innovation-and with the inspiration of Glimmer, we're now all able to do the same.

Amazon Exclusive: What Can We Learn from the World’s Greatest Designers?

The answer to the above question is "a lot." We can learn how to solve problems better. How to look at the world around us with a fresh eye. How to think more creatively, and ultimately, how to open up new possibilities in our lives.
These are the things that great designers do every day. But the premise in my new book Glimmer is: "You don't have to be a designer to think like one." There's a whole way of thinking used by designers, and a step-by-step process they follow, that really can be embraced by anyone—whether you're in business, out there trying to contribute to the world in some way, or if you're just looking to improve your own life.
What I found, in studying some of the world's most innovative designers, is that—in addition to being immensely talented and bright people, of course—they tend to have two big things they rely on. First, they have a certain mindset that enables them to be fearless and optimistic and open to all kinds of new possibilities. And second, they have a framework they use—a proven methodology that helps them to bring their ideas and plans to life, to get things done, and to be successful. I sort of dejargonize this methodology and give lots of examples of how it works in Glimmer.
One of the things designers are known for doing is questioning everything. In fact there's a joke that asks, "How many designers does it take to change a lightbulb?" To which the answer is: "Does it have to be a lightbulb?"
It's a joke, but it's not: Designers all the time really do ask basic things like Does it have to be a lightbulb? The design process often begins with questioning the conventional wisdom about how we currently do things.
Of course, it's one thing to question the world around you-but it's much harder to begin to change it. As I write in Glimmer, if you just question everything without trying to improve it, you may end up being more of a whiner than a designer. Designers actually must take action in order to create new possibilities—that's their job. And so it's not surprising they've developed proven methods to help them do that.
I examine those methods in detail in the book, but they involve, for example:
Teaching oneself to be open to new ideas by "thinking laterally" (which is really about tricking your brain into moving in unexpected directions, instead of the usual straightforward ones).
Developing a better antenna for figuring out what's missing & what's really needed in the world around you—that's how designers find great opportunities.
Learning how to bring ideas to life, and make them real. All of us have ideas in our heads, but designers make their ideas real and tangible-by sketching, by modeling, by scotch-taping things together. It's what designers call prototyping, and it's the way you take a dream and gradually build it into a reality. And this is a technique anyone can use.
Another important thing designers do is, they "fail forward." Most of us are afraid to fail, but designers fail every day. What they understand is that every failure—if you know how to react to it and use it—can be a critical step that brings you closer to the end goal.
These are just a few of the basic tools and principles designers use. And what really surprised me, as I worked on the book, was to see just how accessible these tools are to anyone. And how applicable they are to just about any situation.
In today's world, with all the challenges and problems we have to grapple with—both in our daily lives and in the world at large—we can benefit from having that designer mindset and methodology. Because the truth is, we all need to become better at facing up to tough challenges and finding new solutions.

Kingston [enjoying steamed carrots in his first class seat]

When I pick up K from daycare, I always give him something easy to eat left over from his lunch (or one of the backup snacks in the car when needed), he is usually pretty hungry (or ravenous), it's been steamed carrots the last two days, he signs for more, and pokes his finger at the bottom of the empty container and says "more" when he runs out, and then gets miffy when I don't refill it. Apparently I am too keep a secret large stash of steamed carrots on me for his eating pleasure. :)

Luckily, the drive home is actually pretty short, so we are typically a few minutes away when the "I want my food, and I want it now!" starts up. (He was actually pretty calm about it today.)

The camera is back and going again but will have it again before the weekend. Good to be back and will try catch up over time.

Day 9: Squint

Day 9: Squint

Pretty normal and boring day today. I didn't do anything fantastic, though I guess you could say I was somewhat productive, though others would just say that I sat on my butt for a majority of it.

I woke up, and had my usual cereal, and the unfortunate happened.

Half way through pouring my usual and delicious almond milk into the bowl, I ran out. And so I had to use normal milk for the rest of it, which was slightly dissapointing.

I don't mind normal milk at all, it's just in the end I prefer the almond variety, for it is more healthy and isn't cow juice... I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but if I can avoid certain things ( like milk) then I usually will. And the only time I eat eggs is when it's required for large baking dishes or recipes, but not on it's own.

So yes, then I took my normal everday jog (I'm proud, I haven't been skipping lately), and started my special wednesday ritual.

Every Wednesday (or so I have been doing for the past 4 weeks), I like to treat my hair to a hair mask!

About 2 or 3 weeks ago I officially decided to regrow my hair out (I tried about 5 months ago but failed and ended up cutting it short again), and so I'm doing everything I can to keep my hair healthy and happy like a giggling baby.

Even though It (and I) look pretty stupid here, It's all part of the process to a greater future (for my hair.) (I just pulled an Al Gore).

In case you're curious my hair mask consists of:

1) pouring 1/4 cup of honey in a bowl
2) heating said bowl for about 30 seconds or till it's runny.

3) pour in 1/4 cup olive oil, and let the mixture cool till it's cool enough to handle, but still pretty warm.
4) lather mixture onto my head (do this over a sink) thouroughly.

5) Wrap my head in plastic, then warm up a towl and wrap it on my head.
6) laze around for about a half hour then take a shower rinsing my hair with shampoo.

And that's what I do every wednesday! Here you can see my hair has a slight wave ( I used to straighten it everyday but about 6 or 7 months ago I decided to stop because I wanted healthier hair), and when it's longer some of the waves turn into pretty n loose ringlets, and I miss that...

After all that I took out my magical chair, sat it on my lawn as you see here, and took some quick snapshots, then started making a dent in my summer homework by reading some more Huckleberry Finn.

I have about 60 pages left, so I'll probably finish today ( I hope), but so far I'm really enjoying it. Very adventurous book I must say.

I also finished up the rest of my blueberry buckle I made, which I'm happy about because it is no longer there to tempt me.

Last night I snuck out a pair of my mom's knitting needles and some yarn, sat myself in front of my computer looking up knittiing tutorials on youtube.

I can now cast on the yarn to the needle, but basically failing to start my first row after that...

I really want to make some cute red and herringbone knee high socks, and so I decided knitting would be the best way to do it. I'm going to bug my mom tonight to teach me.

So that's all, good day!

Oh and I usually have tae kwon do tonight, but it's canceled because they are fixing the roof.. oh well.

Four months.

Four months.

Dear George,

You just keep growing. What's up with that? You are allowed to grow until you can sit up and belly laugh, but we need to hit the pause button there.

Although I think you may be just about to start belly laughing. When your daddy kisses your neck with his prickly goatee, you laugh and squeal and laugh some more. It's the hardest you ever laugh, and we just love it.

Your favorite things are chewing on your hands, staring at your right hand, being lifted in the air, and the sound of your own voice. The blurry little legs in this photo reveal your love of kicking kicking kicking. You also, unfortunately, love the television, so I make sure to never have it turned on during the day. Your father doesn't seem to see the harm in it, but I would rather you interact with us developing your language skills or with your toys so you can finesse your hand-eye coordination. Plus, you get this vacant, dopey look on your face when you gaze at the television.

Lately you have begun expressing frustration when you want something and you can't make it happen. You rolled over from your belly to your back for the first time a few weeks ago, but you've only done it a few times since then. You try, and then you let out angry little squawks if you can't make it happen. Today, you were trying to put your Taggies blanket in your mouth, and kept crying every time you failed. I actually love that you get frustrated because it shows that you are being challenged and want to grow.

We may start you on solids soon. There is a lot of debate about whether to start at four vs. six months, but we are choosing to watch your cues and go with the advice of your doctors. You stare intently at us when we eat, but you do not yet try to grab our food. We will begin with baby oatmeal cereal instead of rice cereal, but I am sure we will end up with a messy faced baby no matter what or when we start.

This next month is going to be a doozy. Your Mammaw is going out of town, so we are spending a week with Grandpa at their house. Then two days after she returns, we are going to Maine for a week. You are one sad panda when your routine is thrown off, so fingers crossed we all survive with sanity and naps relatively intact.

Hugs and cuddles,

Momma

The harrowing story of POOR Cissy

The harrowing story of POOR Cissy

MISERY AND WOE OF THE WORKHOUSE

It was a strange experience for seven-year-old Jennifer Worth to be taken to a workhouse to visit a 'disgraced' aunt. Here is her harrowing story POOR Cissy. She went mad, you know,' the grown-ups said, and these words burned themselves into my memory. Our family were poor, hardworking farming folk.

Cissy, a servant girl working in a big house near Bristol, was just 15 when she became pregnant, was dismissed and then sent to Stapleton Workhouse. When the baby was born it was taken away from her. Cissy, nearly mad with shock and grief, was described as 'weak-minded and excitable, with hysterical outbursts,' and confined to the lunatic asylum.

When she became calmer, she was put among 'women of morally degenerate character'. She never saw her child again and never left the workhouse where she was to die many years later. Could this be a story from Victorian times, from Dickens' pen perhaps? No, it all happened in 1924 when having an illegitimate baby was so shocking that a girl could expect no mercy.

My mother visited Cissy and on one occasion took me with her. I have a clear memory of a long grey corridor, locked doors and people in grey uniforms holding keys.

We were taken to a huge room in which were a lot of old ladies in nightdresses - or so I thought. But, as I understood later, it was the uniform of the inmates, not nightclothes, and the 'old ladies' were probably not very old at all.

The place was huge, cold and alien, and, being surrounded by strangers, I was frightened. I was introduced to my aunt, but became tongue-tied and burst into tears. She put her arm around me but I pulled away screaming. Our meeting was not a success. It may not have been a good idea, taking a small child to such a place to meet an unknown aunt, but I am glad my mother did, because I have never forgotten my poor, sad, aunt Cissy. Thoughts of her stayed with me for years and I became determined to find out more about the workhouse system and why it drove people to madness or despair.

The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 led to large workhouses being built all over the country. Families were split up, food was scarce, there was little heating in winter and the huge dormitories had little privacy. On top of this, hard manual labour was required from the inmates. Rules, regulations, discipline and harsh punishments were the norm. With inmates locked in the workhouses became prisons.

The crime? Poverty. 'The workhouse should be the place of last resort,' said the state, but once there the most vulnerable people in society - the old, the sick, crippled, mentally defective people, children and unmarried mothers - suffered most dreadfully. After many damning government reports, in 1930 the workhouses were finally shut down.

But, the sad thing is, they didn't really close, they just changed their name and carried on much the same as before, with the same staff - whose traditions and mind-set remained firmly entrenched in the 19th century. Unmarried mothers were stigmatised, and made to pay for their 'sins', until well after the end of the last war.

The elderly were herded into workhouse wards, re-named 'old people's homes' and children were housed in large orphanages run by a disciplinarian staff. The vast mental asylums were the last to go, closed by the Thatcher government in the 1980s.

The workhouses' dark shadow fell over the whole of Victorian Britain - and then continued right up to the reign of our present Queen - 150 years of social history that should never be forgotten. When I was a young nurse and midwife in the 1950s I met several people who had been workhouse inmates and I collected their real-life stories together in a book called Shadows Of The Workhouse.

Jane was a pathetic, dithering wreck of a woman of 50 when I knew her. She had been brought up in a workhouse, a bright and brilliant child whose spirit had been utterly crushed when she was only eight. Her 'crime' was to imagine that one of the lordly guardians of the workhouse was her father. She called him 'daddy' and for this the workhouse master beat her almost to death.

She never recovered from the abuse. Old Mr Collett was all alone in the world, his family having died during both world wars. But he was a courageous, dignified old man of 80 when I knew him. Yet he ended his life in a place little more than a relic of an old workhouse, sleeping 70 to a dormitory, never going outside, his life regimented and institutionalised. He deserved better than that - after all, this was 1950, not 1860. Mrs Jenkins' sad story is told in an earlier book, Call The Midwife. When her husband died, she and her five children were sent to a London workhouse. Here the children were taken from her and she never saw them again. One by one they died and she didn't go to any of the funerals.

When I knew her she was half-demented - the workhouse had darkened her whole life. Most of the old workhouses have now been demolish
