The basic block for this quilt came about when I was making a quilt for a friend of mine who was expecting her first child. Knowing she liked Kaffe Fassett’s paperweight fabric, I bought several yards of it and set about designing a quilt block to show it off. My first attempts were disastrously boring, so I folded the blocks into different shapes and held them up in front of different fabrics in my stash. In the end, I cut the old blocks into thirds and surrounded them with rectangles of color. I found the end result quite pleasing and have been playing with variations on this quilt for a while now.
