06/01/09 Happy to report all three Osprey chicks are doing very well. The male bringing in good sized fish. The female feeding herself and the chicks. :-)
I watched a feeding yesterday. It took a long time maybe an hour to an hour and a half to feed all three chicks. We know these parents can raise and fledge two chicks successfully but there has been a question mark around -- can they raise three?
The rule of thumb is - if food (fish) is abundant then usually all three or two chicks will survive. The first chick eats until it's full then the rest get to eat - provided there is something to eat. I had wondered how the female and male were doing and how the pecking order was affected or not by the third chick.
The male (Pops) dropped a good sized fish, the female (Ma) grabbed it and began feeding #1 chick. That chick ate well :-) Then she moved on to #2. All the while the little and third chick was doing what it's suppose to do.... lay flat or at the very least turn away from the chick being fed. (same goes for when #1 gets fed #2 has to lay flat or turn away)
While #2 was eating #3 would turn around and look. A couple of times #2 reminded #3 of that it was rude to watch ;-) Sibling Rivalry - witnessed between #1 and #2 chicks. Tis the way of nature.
The rivalry is not too bad, actually.....
Then #2 had its fill and moved over - #3 waited and then moved over to the female. She then fed the littlest chick. She stopped at one point both she and the male seemed concerned about something in the sky. After a while she resumed feeding.
Now the impressive part at least to me.... once she fed all three. She started over and fed each one again with the remaining portion of fish.
All three were full - the female tended to some nest keeping and when I left the male was searching for more fish.
Provided things stay the same.... all three should do well and be flying around before we know it.
The Baby is 1
Our last first birthday so we had to have two parties. The first was on Easter with all of our friends and we did a chick theme with a big Easter egg hunt. This was from his party the weekend of his birthday. The Wright family came down from N. VA and all his little friends from our neighborhood play group came. He really enjoyed himself. He loves being outside and playing on the deck. We brought out his ball pit and pushed him around in his new little car and he had a blast.
It took him 15 mins to eat his piece of cake and was his typical animated self. He's really a funny baby. Does lots of crazy antics to get our attention. He dances any time music is played. He scrambles if he ever sees the remote and he points it at the TV. He loves seeing his daddy most of all and every day when he comes home from work it's like Christmas morning.
He weighs 22.5 lbs and is 29" long. He doesn't look as fat but he weighs more than his brother at this age. I need to find his stats but I think he was only 21 lbs. His hair is the straightest of them all and his personality is so laid back so complete polar opposite from his brother.
He finally started solid food in March. He went from wanting nothing to eating anything. He isn't trying to walk yet but he gets around just fine. He still crawls with his leg out and still points with two fingers. He says dade, bye/hi (same sound) and uh oh.
He's up for anything. Doesn't mind long car rides. Is content to be in the sling or stroller. Likes to crawl around and explore the house for about 1/2 hr every morning. He's wonderful and so sweet. He just started giving the wettest open mouth kisses. We all adore him and think everyone should have a third. Odd numbers are more interesting.
