Make Baby Photos
Before "baby boom babies" ...
... there were wartime babies, and I was one of them. This two-page spread from my earliest photo album really makes me stop and reflect. In two of the pictures, my oldest brother is holding me. He was on furlough from duty with the 86th Infantry Division, the "Blackhawks." That Army unit had just returned to the States after pursuing retreating German troops across the Rhine and into southern Germany. He was a foot soldier, a grunt, and saw his share of hard duty. It must've been a tremendous relief to be home and safe -- for the time being. But when these photos were taken, he was preparing to rejoin his unit, which by then was under orders to proceed to the Pacific front and prepare for an invasion of Japan.
In the facing page photo I'm wearing a sailor's hat which must've belonged to my other brother. He had enlisted in the Navy in March of '45 and was probably home on furlough in between basic training and being sent to the Philippines. With the war in the Pacific still raging in that summer of '45, he too, must have wondered what would be in store for him.
But for a one-year-old, it was a blissfully carefree time. Just wish I could remember how it felt!
ok...one more baby photo - i just couldn't resist! my new nephew just kills me. this photo just kills me! (he is 5 weeks old here.)
i know i have barely posted anything of significance lately...i was recently diagnosed with a medical problem, that unfortunately makes me extremely lethargic. i am hoping that in the new year (along with medication) i will make a full recovery and has energy once again to 'get back out there'. I have a lot planned for 2007!
Happy New Year everyone! Thanks for all of your amazing work this year.
