Thursday is just a day.
You wake up, you make your coffee…

There is a story i wanted to tell when you were older – about how you pulled it together against all the odds, how you came back from the hells of addiction to go to culinary school. About how you’d come back to Chicago to find a job in some restaurant downtown or maybe back in the old neighborhood…
You’d come and stay with me until you got enough money together for your own place; we’d have a little argument because you wanted me to move in with you once you got on your feet, but i’d say you need to enjoy having a place all your own and not worry about me just yet.
You’d tell me it’s time i got to rest for a little bit, take care of my health and i’d say “I’m not an old bat just yet, buster…but keep the offer open!”

We’d sit around a table with all our old friends and tell stories, the famous black-humour we all shared and which you were so good at more appropriate than ever before. We’d look at each other and you in relief and cry a little.
Because you would have made it.

I can’t write the word. I can’t do it yet.
I didn’t really cry until Elkin came over that night. He knelt beside me, without saying a word and just held me…and then i couldn’t stop.

Friday, you’d already been gone a day and i was sitting surrounded by people and my phone notified me that i had a new voice message. Your voice came through the earpiece and it felt as though all the air had been knocked out of my body.
Somehow it didn’t reach my phone, your message, until days after you’d left it.
You told me you were just about to head into class, that things were going really well, and that you loved me and couldn’t wait to come back home.
You sounded so happy.

I told Hanna, and do you know what she said?
“See, that’s a good thing – he’s letting you know he’s alright. He’s letting you know he’s there, and he’s OK.”
She and i have been inseperable since it happened.
She told me how you were each others’ first kiss. Why were you two so bloody secretive about all that? It’s not like we all couldn’t see how you were together…
I’m glad it was with her. She loved you so much, you know?
The night before we had heard, she and i had the strangest experience.
I was looking at these photos of you and i that i’d not seen for ages…just spent the evening looking and remembering and smiling, thinking how i couldn’t wait to show them to you.
The same night, Hanna was looking through her old journals – the ones about you. Just pages and pages about how much she loved you.
I’m glad your first love – your only love – was someone i also love like a daughter. She’s something else.

At the funeral…
Jesus, honey – it’s hard to type that word.
At the funeral, she and i and Robyn and Mimi were saying goodbye because the service was coming to a close – we’re all crying so hard we have to hold on to each other just to keep standing – and i reached out to stroke your hair.
And i suddenly just had to say,
“Jesus, Jamie would have hated this damn music”.
And we all laughed and cried and Hanna said,
“He totally would! He’s probably up there going, ‘What the HELL is this?! Why don’t you put on some Zeppelin for God’s sake?’”
“Right! Or some Floyd…”
“White Zombie!”

You always had a way of making us laugh, even in the most un-funny circumstances imaginable.

Remember the card tricks you and little Quin used to do? He put that King of Hearts card in your hands when he said goodbye. I couldn’t think of anything more fitting, could you?

God, baby – so many people loved you so very much.
I love you so very much.

Cole stayed home with Piglet. He couldn’t handle the funeral, seeing you that way.
He was so angry when he heard, he went out and got into a fight. Punched an undercover cop in the face.
They want to charge him as an adult.
Sounds like something you would have done.
There are just no words for some kinds of pain, you know? Maybe you could pull some strings up there and see him through this, kiddo…?

Back at her place, Mimi and the kids and i put Zeppelin on the stereo, then set out a cup of coffee (with your requisite 12 teaspoons of sugar), and a cigarette for you. By the end of the night, you’d also accumulated a slice of orange, some cherries, a silver flask with a sip of whiskey (i know you didn’t like the stuff, but it was Arthur and he wanted to contribute something) and piece of chocolate.

Quin played me a beautiful, sad song he wrote on his guitar that made me cry.
