She also got a smart trike for her birthday and I have been worried about her dragging her feet on the floor, she is so long her feet are only a few millimeters off the ground. So we went into Clarks yesterday and got her her first pair of proper shoes, I couldnt believe it when they measured her as a 3 1/3 she has such big feet, LOL. She hates having her feet touched so we were in there for about 30 minutes just trying to get her feet into the shoes but we eventually got them on her feet and now she has them on all the time, and when they arent on her feet shes trying to get them on. It was easy to setup but MeowMe was frustrated and struggle quite a bit (remember, kitty was never harmed during this shot ^_^). Feng gently hold down Max but leave some breathing room for him. I gently keep MeowMe down but he was not happy with tail in between his legs. Tail ends up sticking up, perfect for the shot. 10'x20' white backdrop to cover on top of us. Use remote trigger to take a shot. Unfortunately Feng's left foot got shifted a little due to struggle with MeowMe. Tried to take several shots after but MeowMe escaped. Q was fine with this, grooming her, letting her sleep tucked into his belly even when she was almost as big as him. His death affected her personality; I’m not sure she ever stopped grieving. In her last year, Nikita took three medications twice a day. She ranged in weight from just under 5 to a maximum of nearly 7 lbs, after spending most of her life twice that size. To keep her healthy, we not only fed her a limited ingredient diet (the novel protein was easier on her system), but also a food for cats in acute medical crisis. But before all that happened, Nikita was a terror in the best kind of way. She was named “Spock” by the friends whose cat queened her. This was because she had a triangular face and gawky, pointed ears to go with a healthy smattering of spots. But we wanted an X-Files cat, so we named her “Frohike” to match her wild coat and rimmed eyes. That lasted until her first vet appointment when we learned that HE was a SHE. After tossing around “Scully,” “Xena: Warrior Kitten” and a few other equally wrong names, we landed on “Nikita.” La Feline Nikita was a huntress with a soft side, scaling the scratching post with a howl of kitten determination, then scampering off to her double life as an average, everyday puss. It was perfect. Nikita earned many other names as time went on: Nikitakeet, Mouser Mecha Brat Cat, Mouser, Brat Cat, Bratling, Box Cat, KiKi, KiKi Bear, Bear Cat, and Baby Girl. Later on, she was also dubbed: The Monitor, The Supervisor, Head Gray, Crochety, Little Bony, and Granny. She never lost her sense of humor, tolerating the newbies as we adopted them, even – eventually – joining in the cuddle puddle (but, oh, they had to curry favor with her for months before she deigned). She ruled the roost from high points like the entertainment center, and from low points like the kitty hammock (HERS, TYVM) and whatever box she could get into. She played fetch, though it was sometimes abbreviated to “throw.” She was the cat who assisted me most in the bathroom, be it ensuring I never peed alone, or holding down my PJs while I showered (she also liked to lick my toes dry - weirdo!). She was also a most excellent Nikita Harp long before a couple of engineers on YouTube dubbed it "Corporal Cuddling." Nikita never minded having her intolerance of cuddling exploited for humor. She gave as good as she got, especially with our friend Susan (they were best bitching buddies). I chose this picture as Nikita's memorial shot because it sums that up so perfectly. The "ewww" on her face isn't an accident, nor did Nick shed a single drop of blood. Though I did carefully examine the mirrors for fur-oriented retaliation the next few times I changed the lens... Nikita, sweetie, I know Q has already found you, and you are curled up against his belly, purring away while MayDay and Bassie watch over you both. Peace be yours tonight, baby girl. (8) mermaidshoals01 Quilting: "Mermaid Shoals" After finishing Bow Ties in Baby Blue for my nephew Braden, it was time to return to a baby quilt I'd actually started earlier for a certain baby in Sacramento (I'd had to put the quilt to one side when I couldn't find the right shade of mottled aqua blue fabric I wanted for the border -- turns out that after I'd bought some aqua batik online, I found a great quilting store in Irving that carried some absolutely perfect marbled aqua Moda fabric. Go figure). Another bright batik-laden quilt seemed appropriate for a little girl living in California, so I dug through my ever-growing collection of batik fat quarters and created a central section of snowball/ninepatch block combos much like Rainbow Sherbert (Two Scoops). Instead of having white snowballs, I used the teal colorway of Ocean Songs - Mermaids by Laurel Burch and fussy cut each mermaid so that she'd fill a snowball. I originally created three rows of blocks with a pale blue background fabric instead of white, but eventually pitched it when I realized the blue, light as it was, just made everything look muddy. A double 1" border of white and multicolored batik fabric completed the center section, and when I finally found that lovely aqua Moda fabric I turned that into a 4" border and bought a really cool quilting stencil that looked like rolling waves for it. The backing is teal Ocean Songs - Seahorses fabric, edged on either side with a strip of aqua because the OC-S swatch wasn't quite wide enough for the batting. Then it was time to start quilting. The straight lines outlining the squares and checkerboard pattern of the central section was easy enough, as was the rolling waves pattern around the border (I tried doing that with freehand quilting first, but the result looked way too rough and crude so I picked out the teeny tiny stitches and used my regular walking foot instead). As I finished, however, I realized that the unquilted mermaid snowballs seemed to stick out too much. I didn't want to put a geometric quilt pattern in them, however, as I didn't want the quilting to clash with the mermaid design. There was really only one thing I could do. So I sucked it up, put the open-toed darning foot back on the machine, and freehand quilted the outline and details on each mermaid. I have to admit, I was absolutely terrified that this was going to look like secondhand poo, but to my surprise it turned out to be gorgeous. Each mermaid seemed to "pop" from her sea background, and the extra texture added visual and tactile interest to the quilt. After a liberal application of Shout to get rid of the marking lines (turns out it gets rid of plain old pen ink just fine -- no need to use water-soluble quilting pencils anymore, yay!) the quilt came out of the dryer this morning looking like a million bucks. I signed it (yeah, I know it sounds pretentious, but I sign all my quilts partially so that there's a record of who made the quilt, and partially because I'm sortakinda hoping to be famous some day and it may add to the value of the quilt), called Michelle to make sure I had her correct address, then wrapped the quilt in a Central Market plastic bag (only the best carrier bags for my friends, dontchaknow) and mailed it off to sunny Cali. May baby Delia snuggle with it for years to come. The new capulana A capulana is a length of cotton fabric, about 2 meters by 1 meter dyed in vibrant colors and with particular patterns and drawings. My baby g'bye. Eachaun (Schawney) has gone to his Forever Home with his daddy. He now lives on 100 acres and has a pond to swim in every day. I cried it out the week before it happened, and then the day of, I was just happy...cause he was happy. I left him with peace in my heart and knew he was in good, love-filled hands. I don't know that I'll ever see him again...but for almost 7 years, starting at 6 weeks old, he was my baby boy. I love you forever Schawney!!! Tired of crying The husband is working late tonight, and apparently the baby misses her daddy. Normally she goes to sleep without any issue around 9:00 or 10:00 at the latest. Dead Alive DEAD ALIVE - DVD Movie If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of this wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of New Zealand-born writer-director Peter Jackson. However, if nonstop mayhem and extreme violence are your idea of great entertainment, you're sure to appreciate Jackson's gleefully inventive approach to a story that can judiciously be described as sick, twisted, and totally outrageous. The movie's central character is a poor schmuck named Lionel who's practically enslaved to his domineering mother. But when ol' Mum gets bitten by a rare and poisonous rat monkey from Skull Island and is turned into a flesh-eating zombie, Lionel has the unfortunate task of keeping Mama happy while fending off all the other zombies that result from her voracious feeding frenzies. If you've read this far, you'll either be crying out for censorship or eagerly awaiting your first viewing (or second, or third...) of this wildly clever and audaciously uninhibited movie. And while director Jackson would later achieve critical success with his fact-based drama Heavenly Creatures, his talent is readily evident in this earlier effort. If you find this kind of thing even remotely appealing, consider Dead Alive a must-see movie. --Jeff Shannon Peter Jackson proves that if gory is funny, then excessive gory is downright hysterical. As our hapless hero wades through an ankle-deep puddle of blood and entrails, brandishing a lawnmower like a portable Cuisinart at the climax of this zombie-fest, you'll either be screaming with laughter or fleeing in disgust. Timothy Balme stars as the shy mama's boy Lionel, whose controlling shrew of a mother (Elizabeth Moody) starts rotting away, literally, with a vague supernatural disease. Mother dies but refuses to stay down, rising as a flesh-eating zombie infecting everyone she bites. Lionel tries to hide her in the basement, but the victims keep piling up and finally break out when Lionel's blackmailing uncle (a grotesque, leering Ian Watkin) throws a party in the house. It's snack time as the guests become undead hors d'oeuvres and rise again as hungry soldiers of the new zombie army marching on Lionel and his girl Pacquita (the lovely Diana Penalver). New Zealand goremeister Jackson pulls out all stops in this truly outrageous sanguinary comedy, from gross-out gags of oozing puss and rotting body parts at a formal dinner to slapstick antics as Lionel tries to keep his flesh-hungry mother sedated during the funeral to the final Freudian showdown between a now-monstrous mother and the newly liberated Lionel. The cellulose envelopes of much vegetable tissue are dealt with in herbivora and in man in the large intestine, by the action of certain bacteria. Herbivora have a very complicated series of stomachs, whilst in carni -they are simple and the peristaltic movements are in one direction, the contents being voided very quickly after ingestion. In man they are circular, giving a churning movement to the contents, the digestive process being very prolonged. The stomach and dentition of man are very like those of the ape, which is frugivorous, and as the final products of a vegetarian diet are not toxic, as in carnivora, the prolonged digestive process is not harmful. When men disregard these anatomical provisions and take flesh food, the resulting decomposition in the large intestine is the cause of many forms of toxaemia. The colon in herbivora and in man is convoluted in order to hold the contents longer for lower bowel digestion. In carnivora everything is designed for rapid elimination from the bowel, often very soon after a meal. As will be seen by these comparisons, man's stomach, salivary glands and intestinal tract are not adapted to the digestion of a diet of animal food and removal of its waste products. Man, to be able to digest flesh foods properly and eliminate their waste products, would have to be provided with hard, pointed teeth, a short intestinal tract, a smooth colon, a larger liver and an acid secretion from the salivary glands. Failing these provisions, the ingestion of flesh foods in the intestinal tract of man poisons him, overloads his digestive organs and weakens him in the endeavour to extract the required elements of nutrition. The liver of carnivora can neutralise ten to fifteen times as much uric acid as the liver of man. This makes it possible for them to subsist upon a diet containing' a large amount of uric acid. A small increase in the amount of uric acid normally circulating in the blood might in the human body produce serious consequences, whilst an animal is better prepared to protect itself against the action of this poison. Otto Carque, writing on The Folly of Meat Eating, says: "Scientific investigations have demonstrated that in man the liver destroys only about half of the uric acid circulating in the blood, whether derived from external sources, as in a meat diet, or generated within the body by ordinary tissue changes. This is due to the fact that in man the liver and kidneys receive equal quantities of blood. In carnivorous animals the liver is much more active, receiving a much larger blood supply in proportion to that received by the kidneys." Ernst Haeckel wrote: "Whatever part of the body we consider, we find upon the most exact examination that man is more nearly related to the higher apes (eaters of fruit and nuts) than are the highest apes to the lowest apes. It would therefore be unwarranted to regard man as constituting a class by himself." Linneaus, the great naturalist, referring to the natural diet of man, wrote: "Man's structure, external and internal, compared with that of other animals, shows that fruit and succulent vegetables constitute his natural food." In carnivora, the molars are sharp-edged like scissors and cut up the flesh food rather like a mincing machine. Their pointed and sharp incisors tear the flesh from the victim. They hardly wait to masticate, but bolt their food, there being no salivary digestion. In addition, their tongues are very rough and rasp shreds from the bones. In herbivora the tongue is smooth and the molars are flat and have grinding surfaces to enable them to deal with grasses when chewing the cud, and with oats, as in the case of horses. In monkeys and man, the flat molars are particularly adapted to cracking nuts and chewing kernels, as well as vegetables and roots. The conclusion is indeed inescapable. Human physical ancestry is vegetarian. In diet the ape is fruitarian. The strongest animals on earth, such as apes, elephants, horses and oxen, are all vegetarian. Vegetarians hold records for athletics and a vegetarian diet is curative, as many have proved. The ox makes red blood and red meat out of green grass. The hog manages to make red blood from yellow corn. The gorilla, man's nearest relative in the animal world, gets the reddest blood and the most sturdy muscles of any animal in the world from a diet of wild celery and berries. A baby makes red blood from the milk it draws from its mother's breast. Two hundred million Buddhists and Brahmins in India live and thrive and multiply, and have done so for 2,000 years, without a taste of animal flesh. The only animals that live longer than man - the giant tortoises of the Galapagos and Seychelle Islands - are vegetarians. The longest lived mammal, other than man, is the elephant, a vegetarian. Sometime in 1995 when my son was serving a mission in Venezuela and started eating meat again (mainly to be polite and not offend the families who were feeding him) I started craving meat and my downfall was Kung Pao chicken. 8. I’m slow to anger. I’ve only yelled (several times) at one person in my life. My oldest son had a way of extracting it from me. That was a long time ago. 9. I was a spoiled teenager. I had 5 different cars from 16-18. Two of them got totaled (one by a friend and one by me) and my dad would take me shopping for a new one the next week. Not New but new to me. Geesh! 10. I can’t carry a tune and still feel embarrassed if my husband hears me singing because he has such a beautiful voice. 11. I’ve seen UFO’s ~ for real. 12. I’m a genealogist. The flight here was 2 hours late, but it really didn’t make any difference. Cora and Nelson Samaniego, Interplast’s hosts in Loja, were at the airport to pick me up and take me to the site. I experienced an absolutely hair-raising ride from the airport over a mountain pass with near misses of big slow moving buses and oncoming cars. The Samaneigos were completely unconcerned. They described their ambitious goals for my visit: to help promote the idea of a regional burn unit that could cover the entire district of Loja as well as Northern Peru; to teach; and to do some needed surgery if there was time. Nelson and Cora (and their daughter Stephanie) then took me to a soccer game. The local Loja team was up against a more powerful rival from Guayaquil and trounced them 4-0. There was tremendous exuberance in the stadium, with many people wearing the local colors, including Nelson. We followed this with dinner at the new KFC restaurant (been there for about 4 months- I guess a sign that Loja is advancing economically!) and then did a tour of the new burn unit, still under construction. It was an eye-opener for sure. They had two nurses looking after seven patients; four children and three adults. Three of them are from one family and share one room. Among them is a severely burned young boy of about five-years old who is probably going to die soon (he has burns on over 80 percent of his body, including deep face burns). He is lying on a bed with a wood crate over top of him that is covered with blankets. There is a gooseneck lamp inside the crate to try to keep him a little warm. He is slathered with flamazine, and has a foley and an IV. He seems to be unconscious, which is probably a good thing. slow development in babies The painful and baffling mystery as to why some obviously bright children do not begin talking until long after the ”normal” time is explored in this book through personal experiences and the findings of scientific research. The author’s own experiences as the father of such a child led to the formation of a goup of more than fifty sets of parents of similar children. The anguish and frustration of these prents as they try to cope with children who do not talk and institutions that do not understand them is a remarkable and moving human story. Fortunately, some of these children turn out to have not only normal intelligence but even outstanding abilities, especially in highly analytical fields such as mathematics and computers.
