Smith, 17, said she is most looking forward to serving the city where she grew up, the city she loves. "I'm so excited ... it still hasn't hit me yet," said Smith, minutes after the ceremony. "What a great way to serve La Habra." Smith is a member of the Heralds' varsity song squad. She plans to study nursing after high school, and eventually become an anesthesiologist. Along with the Miss La Habra title, Smith collects $1,500 along with several prizes. The four winning princesses, who receive $1,000 each, are: Aleen Khamo, Janell Walker, Asucena Mora and Amaris Valeriano. Khamo was also voted Miss Congeniality by fellow contestants. The reigning Miss La Habra will serve as the queen of the Corn Festival, and along with her court, will represent the city at a variety of functions throughout the year. Church of St Brynach , Llanfrynach Llanfrynach Church is in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, in the community of Llanfrynach in the county of Powys. It is located at Ordnance Survey national grid reference SO0752325791. The church is recorded in the CPAT Historic Environment Record as number 16859 and this number should be quoted in all correspondence. Summary St Brynach's church is situated in the centre of Llanfrynach village some 4km from Brecon. It is a Victorian structure attached to a medieval tower and contains only a few items of interest, namely the only survivor of three early medieval stones found during the rebuilding of 1885 and a medieval font. The churchyard is large for a village church and may once have been more curvilinear than it now appears. Tower is attributed to 14thC, though it is as likely to be 15thC, but rest of the building dates from 1885. Parts of the following description are quoted from the 1979 publication The Buildings of Wales: Powys by Richard Haslam History An early medieval foundation here seems likely, though the dedication and the three reputedly sculptured stones apart there is no evidence to collaborate such a view. The 1291 Taxatio records 'Ecclesia de Lambernach' at the unexceptional value of ?4 6s 8d. The nave and chancel were replaced by a local builder, William Jones, in the Decorated style in 1885. The rood loft which functioned as a gallery according to Theophilus Jones was removed a this time and of three early medieval stones found at the time only one can now be located. In 1864 the tower wall was broken through to create space for a set of pews for the de Winton family. A west window was created at the same time. The vestry was added in 1892, the tower was re-roofed in 1905, and internally the font was re-dressed in 1892. Architecture Llanfrynach comprises a nave with a slightly narrower chancel, a west tower of the same width as the nave, a north vestry with a boiler room underneath, and a south porch towards the south-west corner of the nave. It is aligned north-east/south-west but 'ecclesiastical east' is adopted here for descriptive purposes. Fabrics: 'A' consists of greyish red sandstone, though with some variations in colour, in both blocks and slabs, irregularly coursed and with ashlar quoins. 'B' is of more regular blocks and slabs, less weathered, and randomly coursed. All this stone looks new and there are buff-yellow sandstone dressings. Roof: reconstituted clay tiles. Cross finials on chancel and porch. Drainage: there are no obvious signs other than downpipes into raised drain holes against the walls. It is possible that any trench around the wall has now grassed over. Exterior Tower. General. Fabric A. Wall faces are heavily pointed, obscuring the masonry. Certain features are consistent to all faces: there is a chamfered plinth at a height of 1m, a string-course in rounded section at 1.5m, a string-course defines the top of the second stage about two-thirds of the way up the tower, and a third with hollow moulding at the top of the belfry stage; above this is a battlemented parapet, which Griffiths of RCAHMW thought was modern. The whole tower is usually attributed to the 14thC. North wall: at base of second stage is a trefoil-headed lancet of buff sandstone with a relieving arch over, completely Victorian, inserted. This stage also shows some possible plaster remnants. Belfry is lit by a four-centred arched window, the two lights having cusped tracery and louvre boards; some of the dressings renewed. East wall: nave apex reaches to just below the second stage string-course. Third stage has standard belfry window but not possible to determine whether any of the dressings renewed. Two waterspouts on the string-course above. South wall: second stage has an inserted Victorian window as in north wall. At the top of this stage there is also a slit window with unchamfered jambs and a lintel that is splayed on the underside. This slit is blocked up as is part of the standard belfry window in the third stage. West wall: the second stage carries a large two-light window of Victorian date, and above it is a slit window with undercut lintel as on the south side. The standard belfry window has some renewed tracery, and there are two waterspouts on the string-course above. Nave. General. Fabric 'B'. Plinth with chamfer at height of between 0.3m-0.6m. Windows of regular form and all have relieving arches in 'B'. North wall: two two-light windows. Buttress overlies junction of nave and tower. South wall: three two-light windows, having quatrefoils above, hoodmouldings with ballflower stops; two buttresses, one at south-east angle, the other overlapping tower wall as on the north. Chancel. General. Similar to nave in terms of fabric, plinth, wi 238. Woodland walk I was walking this morning through the woods at the end of our street. It was a beautiful morning – the ground was carpeted with wonderful autumn-coloured leaves. I walked for a while taking the odd photo or two when an almighty wind blew up – it sounded like a jet engine in the tops of the trees – really scary. The weathermen said to expect gales today but I have never heard the like before. I hot-footed it out of the woods as already there were signs of broken branches around and I didn't want to wait until one fell on me. living-room-11.10-new-chair I got these beautiful matching Danish Modern armchairs today for 5.00--total. I had seen a man pulling up in his truck with these in the back of it. He came into the back area of the thrift shop to see where to drop them for donation. The clerk got a bit nasty saying that he'd have to drive them around the building, to the back area. I told her I wanted to buy them and she tells me that it's not her problem, that I'll have to buy them from the guy directly. I try to give the man 30.00 or so, everything I have in my pocket, and he gives it all back. I insist he accept payment, so he says to give him 5.00. I am making a donation in his name to a charity that he does work for. A Well Furnished Apartment in Kure, Japan The walls are still a little blank tho, sadly. The Great Orme is a prominent limestone headland on the north coast of Wales situated in Llandudno. It is referred to as Cyngreawdr Fynydd in a poem by the 12th century poet Gwalchmai ap Meilyr. It is echoed by the Little Orme, a smaller but very similar limestone headland, which is on the other side of Llandudno Bay in the parish of Llanrhos. The Great Orme is run as a nature reserve by the Conwy County Borough Countryside Service, with a number of protective designations (including Special Area of Conservation, Heritage Coast, Country Park, and Site of Special Scientific Interest), being an area two miles (3.2 km) long by one mile (1.6 km) wide. It is home to a long-established herd of about two hundred feral Kashmir goats (acquired from Queen Victoria). There are numerous paths for walking on the summit, including a section of the North Wales Path, a long distance route. About half the Great Orme is in use as farmland, mostly for sheep grazing. The geology of the Great Orme is limestone and the surface is particularly noted for the limestone pavements covering several headland areas. There are also rich seams of Dolomite-hosted copper ore. The Great Orme has a very rich flora, including most notably the only known site of the critically endangered Wild Cotoneaster Cotoneaster cambricus, of which only six wild plants are known. Many of the flowers growing in shallow lime-rich earth on the headland have developed from the alpine sub-arctic species that developed following the last ice-age. Spring and early summer flowers include Bloody Cranesbill, Thrift and Sea Campion, clinging to the sheer rock face, while Pyramidal Orchid, Common Rockrose and Wild Thyme carpet the grassland. The old mines and quarries also provide suitable habitat for species of plants including Spring Squill growing on the old copper workings. The White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare), which is found growing on the western-most slopes of the Orme is said to have been used, and perhaps cultivated, by fourteenth century monks, no doubt to make herbal remedies including cough mixtures. The rare Horehound Plume Moth (Pterophorus spilodactylus) lays her eggs amongst the silky leaves and its caterpillars rely for food solely upon this one plant. The headland is the habitat of several endangered species of butterflies and moths, including the Silky Wave, the Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus subsp. caernesis) and the Grayling (Hipparchia semele thyone) These last two have adapted to the Great Orme by appearing earlier in the year to take advantage of the limestone flowers and grasses. Also they are smaller than in other parts of the country and are recognised as a definite subspecies. The Great Orme is reported as the northernmost known habitat within Britain for several ‘southern’ species of spider notably: Segestria bavarica, Episinus truncatus, Micrargus laudatus, Drassyllus praeficus, Liocranum rupicola and Ozyptila scabricula. The caves and abandoned mine workings are home to large colonies of the rare Horseshoe bat. This small flying mammal navigates the caves and tunnels by using echo location to obtain a mental picture of its surroundings. During the daytime, Horseshoe bats are found suspended from the roof of tunnels and caves, with their wings tightly wrapped around their bodies. Only at dusk do the bats leave the caves and mine shafts, to feed on beetles and moths. The cliffs are host to colonies of seabirds (such as Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Razorbills and even Fulmars as well as Gulls). The Great Orme is also home to many resident and migrant land birds including Ravens, Little Owls and Peregrine Falcons. Below the cliffs, the rock-pools around the headland are a rich and varied habitat for aquatic plants and animals including barnacles, red beadlet anemones and hermit crabs. Twice HDR'd that is, once in qtpfsgui, and once in photomatix, and given layers to combine the properties of both. I also had to painstakingly distort it to square again, cos it photostitched in a horseshoe shape. Then had to sort the colour. Meh! This is the log I found the Dor Beetle on. Quite a des res really.
