When the enemy attacks, it looks like a storm cloud descending on the vineyard. Starlings flock in the thousands and will eat grape berries whole. They can strip a vineyard of a large portion of the crop in a matter of minutes, consuming a years worth of labor, care and tending. Some growers try gas cannons to scare the birds. Others are even rediscovering falconry as a way to deter the the smaller birds from congregating. But the nets are still the best protection. Miles of nets in some cases. Next time you are enjoying a nice glass of wine, think about everything that went into getting it into the bottle. It might make the price a little easier to swallow.
