As a child under the age of 5 I was stung by hornets or bees nesting in the ground behind this now historic house above the slope near Elderberry Park. Another child tricked us into walking on the path, and the bees stung all of us.

Hearing our screams adults ran to us from all directions. They laid us down on the grass out front to treat us there were maybe 6-10 or so kids bitten. At first I wasn't sure but it finally did hurt. I have been increasingly alergic to bee or hornet stings ever since.

That was probably in 1958 or 1959.

The doctor drove a "Woody" a green truck with wood panels. I always thought he was the oldest person in the world as there were so few elders in Anchorage.

This historic house is near the house my grandparents built on the corner of 3rd and L Street in the old downtown section of Anchorage, near the statue of Captain Cook, which is just across the street from the empty lot were our house once stood.

Front Door Gone: Exterior

The plan for this area is to swap the location of the front door and window. The front door will open into the livingroom and the window will service the small bedroom tucked away on the right side of this photo (East end of the house). This overhang will be removed and a two level deck will serve as the front 'porch' EVENTUALLY.

I would have really liked to have used a heavy brown cotton velvet for this curtain, but could not find any at an affordable price, and the poly velvets are definitely not suited for a curtain such as this. Besides...I prefer my textiles to NOT contain any form of plastic in them. LOL. =)

Carved Panel Window Treatment

I constructed a wooden cornice board using birch plywood, which I painted with stripes. I cut out the panel shapes, painted them brown and stenciled in black. I screwed and glued it together and embellished it with fringe, cords and tassels.

Jaywick is full of interesting individual chalets. We were driving slowly along whilst I took pics and a man came running out of this one effing and blinding about me taking a shot of his effing chalet. Very grown-up.

It is one of Britain's most localised and rarest butterflies.

They spend most of their lives in the canopy or in dense scrub, feeding on honeydew, and very rarely come down to ground level. In the UK there are now only about 45 colonies, all in a small part of the East Midlands between Oxford and Peterborough. Historically there have been around 90 known colonies since its discovery in 1828, but there have been many, mostly unsuccessful, introductions at various locations in southern England including one in Surrey in 1952 that seemed to be successful until the habitat was destroyed.

The one pictured here is unusually early (mid-May rather than the normal appearance in mid-June) and in an area where they are said to be absent (Hautes-Pyrenees). Also, it was virtually at ground level!

- Ladybug stroller toy by Playgro Australia Pty Ltd. Body makes a crinkle noise when it's squeezed and rattles when it's shaken. Yellow part is a U clip that we attached to stroller canopy. (Can be sold separately. See closeup in a following photo). Excellent condition.
- Teething butterfly rattle is by Discovery Toys. Great condition and was consistently a favorite toy.
- Teething rattle in bottom right-hand corner isn't marked with brand name. Excellent condition.

The art deco style Foshay Tower, built in 1929, remains one of the tallest concrete skyscrapers to this day, second only in height to the Empire State Building in New York City. -Take Taipei CITY BUS ?? 260 (less crowded so easier to get a seat for a more comfortable ride)

NOTE: Do buy food in case you get hungry. While there are food centre at various stops in the mountain, the choices of food are few. Buns were sold out by the time I reached Lengshuikeng at around 1pm. Only biscuits and titbist were available. You can order a hot beverage to warm yourself in the cold thgh.

ii) Alight at terminal stop ?? to buy one-day pass for park shuttle bus (NT$60)

Alternative: For those who wants to go to Yangmingshan Visitor Centre, alight at 2nd last stop

Captured Fairy Jar - Sent!

Here is what I sent to my partner for the Mini Whimsey Captured Fairy Jar on swap-bot. The jar was 4oz, and it was harder than I thought it was going to be to work in a jar that small. This is my first ever fairy jar.

The inside has glitter and grass and flowers. I painted a little wooden knob like a mushroom, and hung a dragonfly from the top. I like how she turned out. I decided with all the light green that she was a spring fairy.

I also sent some fairy stickers and stamps, along with a corny poem about spring fairies that I found online. ; )

Design by Wiel Arets. He is one of the proponents of contemporary architecture. A singular architect, independent thinker, an integral part of the Dutch architecture scene while still remaining entirely unique, Wiel Arets does not follow trends nor can he be easily classified in a specific category. A proponent of the ontological rather than representational approach to architecture (K. Frampton), his work tends toward the regularity of the parts but is not minimalist in a reductive sense. It involves an extremely high level of intellectual complexity while also being quite concrete and targets a wide audience with attention and modesty. A master of using materials both in their crudest and most surprisingly refined forms, his architecture does not centre on the sculptural or iconic representation of form like many of his colleagues but tends toward a condensation and intensity that create the special aura of Lightness and Consistency that characterizes his work. The ILBAGNOALESSI "Dot" bathroom design exemplifies one of his typical compositional strategies: a recourse to unfamiliar juxtapositions, the use of at times conventional forms alongside unconventional ones. The result produces a subtly refined sense of Weightlessness that is rare in modern product design: a good example of how much architecture has still to give to contemporary design.

Bokito: bloody floor

No it's not all blood you see here, the big dark spots are part of the 'authentic' floor of this restauarant. Phew !

One woman was taken to hospital with more than one hunderd bite wounds and three others were injured following the escape of a male gorilla at Rotterdam's Blijdorp zoo on Friday. Two other people were injured during the evacuation and one zoo worker is suffering from shock after coming face to face with the animal. The zoo was crammed with people because of the holiday weekend.

The gorilla Bokito which escaped from Rotterdam's Blijdorp zoo on Friday afternoon went on view to the public again on Saturday. But the gorillas' outside enclosure remains closed while the investigation into how the silverback, who weighs 180 kilos, managed to cross a wide ditch full of water to get to the public areas.

Meanwhile, a zoo official said the woman who was attacked and dragged off by Bokito appeared to have been deliberately targeted.

She was a season ticket holder and visited the zoo on a daily basis, spending a lot of time at the gorilla enclosure. The gorilla made straight for her on his escape, ignoring several children, news agency ANP reported.

The woman is under sedation in hospital where she is undergoing several operations. She has a broken wrist and lower arm and was bitten a number of times.

Pyramids of Dashur, Egypt.

The Bent Pyramid, (the Pyramid of Snefru), the Black Pyramid, and the Red Pyramid (the Pyramid of Snefru) , viewed from the Complex of Djoser, Saqqara.

Dahshur is the area bordering on the necropolis of South Saqqara, where several pharaohs chose to site their pyramids. Until recently this important pyramid field was little visited, being part of an Egyptian military zone with no admittance to the public, but was opened to tourism in October 1996.
Its importance is in representing evolutionary phases in pyramid building, beginning with the monuments of Snefru, the 'Horus Nebmaat', founder of Dynasty IV. Snefru was the father of Khufu, whose 'Great Pyramid' at Giza is one of the ancient wonders of the world.
Snefru probably began his career in pyramid building by attempting to complete the monument of his father Huni at Meidum. He seems to have abandoned this for a time and his workforce was relocated to Dahshur, where he began to build another pyramid, named 'Snefru is shining in the south' and which we now know as the 'Bent Pyramid' because of its shape.
Snefru's second monument at Dahshur is about 4km to the north and known as the 'North' or 'Red Pyramid'. This was to be Snefru's third attempt at pyramid construction (including Meidum) - his architects now using the technical experience gained from previous structures, a reduced angle of slope and less ambitious plan. It is thought to have been begun in Snefru's 30th year of reign and dates found in builders' marks on blocks from the Red Pyramid have proved to be of great importance in giving a clear picture of the time it took to build the pyramid.
The name 'Red Pyramid' has derived from the colour of limestone used in constructing the pyramid's core - it's casing of white limestone is now completely missing.

A small problem with the exposure setting on this photo, but in the end it actually turned out not bad.

The pyramids are just massive. I knew they were big (having seen them in films and photos and documentaries, etc) but just wasn't prepared at the sheer size of them in real life. When you're up next to them, just imagining how it was possible to build them thousands of years ago, before modern machinery is just mind blowing.

Looking though all my photos when I got back, I was disappointed that none of them showed the sheer scale of the pyramids. You can tell they're big, but you just don't get the sense of how big they really are. However, I noticed that at the very bottom right hand corner of the closest pyramid in this photo is a person. At least this helps give some idea of the scale. You may need to zoom in to see him.

IRON MAN: A WALK IN THE STARK - "GLADIOLATOR"

We found a garden bed full of unidentified bulbs, at least one of which flowered into this glorious gladiolus this spring.

The pink blooms seemed to me to be a good match for this Iron Man figure, whose soft vinyl was a little more pink hued than the other I.M figures I have.

The backdrop is a piece of scrap fabric from my partner's rag box, and she also helped out by keeping the flower steady in the high winds we had on the day we shot this.

The Figure was made by a Japanese company, Yamato, and is part of their "!StoryImageFigure!" Marvel Comics range. They're neat little soft PVC toys that have to be assembled by snapping the pieces together and are contained within two boxes (talk about wasteful packaging!) when purchased, with the inner box serving as a display container witha clear plastic window and the outer box being 'blind'. That means you don't have any idea what the figure inside is until you buy one and open the box. There is a also a variant figure with a metallic paint job. The figure stands about 8.5 cm (3.75 inches) and has limited articulation.

I did a little work with photoshop on the helmet slits and chest plate uni-beam emitter.

To the south west of the Catholic Church is the graveyard and cathedral of Saint John the Baptist (Church of Ireland). Galloway describes the cathedral as 'an elegant Classical structure with a mottled grey stone exterior and banding linking Corinthian pilasters.' The three-storey porch has a triangular pediment above which is a two-storey square tower with round-arched louvered windows and Corinthian pilasters on each face. Over this is a small rotunda with four windows similar to those on the storey below alternating with four blind windows. The addition of a spire in 1812 gave the building its present appearance. The former diocesan library founded by Archbishop Bolton is housed in a building of 1835. The library building (restored in 1986) contains a fine collection of sixteenth and seventeenth-century books.

The fine entrance gates of the yard of the cathedral open onto John Street, a primarily residential street composed of terraces of large late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century townhouses. Many of these houses retain the original fenestration though it is obvious that PVC replacements have eroded the character of the streetscape.

SCL yard & repair shop in Saint Petersburg, Florida - Locomotive service & maintenance area shown 1973

This is the SCL (former ACL) railroad yard in Saint Petersburg, Florida. This 1973 view is of the locomotive service and maintenance area near 22nd Avenue North. The large building with the smoke stack on the left was used by SCL railroad maintenance workers. Another building on the left side, but not shown, had once been used by the Pullman company employees. By this time, the old yard wooden water tower, used to fill steam locomotive tenders, and the large canopy shed covering the diesel service area had already been torn down. In the yard situated near the large maintenance building is a former L&N Pullman built sleeper that was owned as a private car. On the other side of the maintenance building, to the left, was the passenger car repair, maintenace and service area tracks, all used by Amtrak during this time period. Farther to the right side of the photo, out of view, was located the freight yard. In the center of the photo there appears to be two Alco RS-3 locomotives and the yard sand tower. An EMD yard switcher and an E-8 diesel are spotted on the next track to the right. Farther to the right is a covered hopper and a stored sleeping car placed on the same track. Covered hopper cars were brought in to supply dry sand for the locomotive sand tower. When enlarging this photo one can see in the far background a leg of the wye track that comes off the mainline. Today all the yard tracks in this view are gone, however, a small portion of the freight yard tracks and the wye remain in place.

Canopy

This is part of a managed forest. It was clear that these trees had been coppiced quite some time ago, I would guess 15 to 20 years, hence them all being so close together.

A few hundred yards south of this point was an area that was being coppiced, and beside it last years regrowth.

Back to Sonnenberg - Mary Thompson's Bedroom

This canopy bed is in Mary Thompson's bedroom. The doorway leads out to a hallway which overlooks the Great Hall. In front of the bed is one of the vintage dresses which are on display throughout the mansion. Her bedroom is located on the second floor in the mansion at the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua, NY. (97)
