Door doesn't actually go anywhere yet–master bedroom addition is another phase to come. Blue chair found at an antiques store's sidewalk sale for $75! Lamp was my parent's, a funky seventies pottery base with a new shade, I should have gone with a barrel shade. This room becomes our dining room once we add on a new living room this fall. Stairrail design I saw in a magazine and altered slightly. Walls are Benjamin Moore Blue. Yes, the color is named Blue. And yes, it took 3 coats, probably should have done 4.

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Steel and Aluminum Sheet Metal Awnings, Canopies, Carports, Soffit, and Shutters in Japan

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Steel and Aluminum Sheet Metal Awnings, Canopies, Carports, Soffit, and Shutters in Japan

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for steel and aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, soffit, and shutters across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for steel and aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, soffit, and shutters. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for steel and aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, soffit, and shutters in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Deep in the Shade of Paradise

Deep in the Shade of Paradise

Dufresne is "an extraordinarily generous and lyrical storyteller" (San Francisco Chronicle) who has been compared to John Irving (New Orleans Times Picayune) and William Faulkner (Detroit Free Press).
Welcome to Shiver-de-Freeze, a boot-shaped precinct deep in the Louisiana swamp, famous for its healing waters and curious fauna. Grisham Loudermilk is marrying Ariane Thevenot at Paradise, the family's ancestral home, and we're here for the wedding. But reason and love, it would seem, keep little company in Paradise these days: Grisham's cousin Adlai Birdsong has fallen desperately in love with the bride-to-be. Adlai's ill-advised courtship proceeds even as his daddy, Royce, strles to recall his past in the face of Alzheimer's; as Father Pat McDermott realizes his passion for the mother of the bride; as the conjoined twins, Tous-les-Deux, train their eyes on Boudou Fontana, the last of the star-crossed Fontana clan. And just when it seems that Adlai must resign himself to a prolonged season of bachelorhood, Miranda Ferry, Grisham's recent lover, wanders into town unawares.

With his signature tragic-comic voice and cast of unforgettable and lively characters, Dufresne explores love, death, imagination, and memory. Reading group guide available.

In his fever-dream novel Deep in the Shade of Paradise, John Dufresne is a goofily, deliriously intrusive authorial presence. He's constantly popping in and declaiming upon his plot and its various themes (which are, incidentally, love and memory and family and Southern cooking.) Toward the end of the book he pronounces, "No characters are minor." This might well be the motto of the book, which is a ridiculously circuitous retelling of A Midsummer's Night Dream, set in deepest Louisiana and cast with literally dozens of cousins. The central story is a love triangle: there's our hero Adlai Birdsong, his cousin Grisham Loudermilk, and Loudermilk's fiancee, Ariane Thevenot. Adlai pursues the beautiful Ariane through plot twists and philosophical digressions, into bars and bedrooms, and finally to the family's old estate where the wedding is to take place. Being a Southern novel, no wedding is complete without a death, and being a Shakespearean exercise, no wedding is complete without a play-within-a-play. Dufresne happily provides all this and more in a novel so completely imagined that in the back, there's an appendix like a capacious satchel, made to hold "items of passing interest." --Claire Dederer

Florida Harvester Ants - Pogonomyrmex badius

Florida Harvester Ants - Pogonomyrmex badius

Introduction
Although the Florida harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex badius (Latreille), occurs throughout most of Florida it is limited by its ecological requirements. Where it does occur, the ant nest is readily visible as a large cleared area with a number of slow moving individuals on the surface near the nest. Harvester ants in the genus Pogonomyrmex received this name due to their practice of gathering seeds for food. While there are 22 species of harvester ants found in the United States, only the Florida harvester ant occurs east of the Mississippi River (Smith and Whitman 1992).

major worker
Distribution
The Florida harvester ant is found from Florida to North Carolina (Haack and Granovsky 1990) and west into Mississippi (Creighton 1950) and Louisiana (Cole 1968). The ant is the only eastern representative of the genus Pogonomyrmex (Cole 1968).
Description
The adults are dark rust red in color (Haack and Granovsky 1990), with the worker caste strongly polymorphic (1/4 to 3/8 inch long) (Smith and Whitman 1992). The major worker has a disproportionally enlarged head (after Creighton 1950).

Like most other Pogonomyrmex spp. the Florida harvester ant has a psammophore (rows of long hair on ventral side of head) but it is poorly developed (Smith and Whitman 1992). The antennae are clubless with twelve segments. The thoracic dorsum has the sutures obsolescent or absent, and the thorax is not impressed between the masonotum and epinotum; The abdominal pedicel consists of two segments. The tibial spurs on the middle and hind legs are very finely pectinate.

Worker
Biology
The Florida harvester ant differs from all other Pogonomyrmex spp. in having polymorphic (more than one size) workers. The huge headed soldiers (major workers) are not abundant in the colonies and seem to be no more aggressive or pugnacious than the intermediate and smaller workers (Wheeler 1910).

The Florida harvester ant nests exclusively or by preference in sand. It requires open areas in which to build its nest and tends to nest in open woodlands or grassy areas (Haack and Granovsky 1990). Xeric hammocks are preferred. Many nests are found on lawns, around gardens, and in fire lanes (Van Pelt 1958). The mound is very slight and flattened with single or multiple entrances in the center and is from 30 to 60 cm in diameter. Unlike most other harvester ant species (Haack and Granovsky 1990), Florida harvester ant workers make no effort to clear vegetation from around the mound (Wheeler 1910). However, the mound is often covered with small pebbles or charcoal from burned areas (Smith and Whitman 1992).

colony entrance

The ant is vigorously active in rather low relative humidity (below 55 percent) and in high temperatures (35-40°C). Mating swarms usually occur in the afternoon after a rain (Haack and Granovsky 1990). Winged forms (reproductive adults) have been observed in the nests in May, and mating flights were recorded for June (Van Pelt 1958). Haack and Granovsky (1990) state that harvester ants swarm from June to October although the swarms are more common during August and September. Colonies are long lived and one was observed to last at least 19 years (Haack and Granovsky 1990). There is a single queen in each colony (Smith and Whitman 1992).

The ant harvests the seeds of many plants and stores them in the flat graneries of its nest which consists of many subterranean tunnels and chambers (Haack and Granovsky 1990, Tschinkel 2001). It not only collects seeds that have fallen to the ground, but also plucks them directly from the plants, husks them and deposits the chaff on the kitchen middens at the periphery of the mound. Seeds from the following plants have been identified from nests: ragweed, crab grass, small crab grass, rough buttonweed, sedge, Paspalium sp., poke weed, red clover, alfalfa, evening primrose, narrow leaf vetch and crotonweed.

foraging

The Florida harvester ant moves its nest periodically (an average of once every 234 days) in response to changes in microclimate resulting from shading due to overhanging vegetation. Pogonomyrmex workers of one colony will readily fight members of another colony of the same or different ant species and continued strife of this kind also results in colony movement (Smith and Whitman 1992).
Economic Importance
The Florida harvester ant is not of economic importance to growers and homeowners, is not aggressive and almost has to be forced to sting someone. However, the sting is among the more painful of those received from ants and the pain lasts longer than usual for ant stings due to the poison injected (Haack and Granovsky 1990). Some swelling may also occur as the reaction to their stings spread along the lymph channels (Ebeling 1978).

A personal account of a sting episode by Wray (1938) is as follows: "Several ants stung me on the wrist, and after a few minutes an intense fiery pain began in this area which was about two inches in diameter. It turned deep red in color and

Cynodon dactylon

Cynodon dactylon

Cynodon dactylon (syn. Panicum dactylon, Capriola dactylon), also known as durva grass, Bermuda Grass, Dubo, Dog's Tooth Grass, Bahama Grass, Devil's Grass, Couch Grass, Indian Doab, Arugampul, Grama, and Scutch Grass, is a grass native to north Africa, Asia and Australia and southern Europe. The name "Bermuda Grass" derives from its abundance as an invasive species on Bermuda; it does not occur naturally there.[citation needed]

The blades are a grey-green colour and are short, usually 2–15 centimetres (0.79–5.9 in) long with rough edges.[1] The erect stems can grow 1–30 centimetres (0.39–12 in) tall. The stems are slightly flattened, often tinged purple in colour. The seed heads are produced in a cluster of 2–6 spikes together at the top of the stem, each spike 2–5 centimetres (0.79–2.0 in) long.[1] It has a deep root system; in drought situations with penetrable soil, the root system can grow to over 2 m deep, though most of the root mass is less than 60 cm under the surface. The grass creeps along the ground and root wherever a node touches the ground, forming a dense mat. C. dactylon reproduces through seeds, through runners and rhizomes. Growth begins at temperatures above 15 °C (59 °F) with optimum growth between 24 to 37 °C (75 to 99 °F); in winter the grass becomes dormant and turns brown. Growth is promoted by full sun and retarded by full shade, e.g., close to tree trunks.

Dry creek "trail"

The streambeds of Utah's desert country, make wonderful "routes" to explore. This is the view downstream after exiting Raven Canyon.

My wife and I left our home at 4 pm 17 April 2009 and pretty much drove straight through (19 hours) to a 5 tent site, remote camping spot along the east edge of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. We traveled in our 1994 Toyota four wheel drive pickup with a cab high canopy; a nice mattress bed in the back; and all our travel, hiking, and backpacking gear “roughly organized” and stored in either the back of the pickup or in the extended cab section of the truck.

When I tired, either my wife drove, or if we were both tired, we pulled into a place where we could both catch a little sleep. The pace was steady, persistent, but not rushed. The highlight of the drive down was Utah highway 72 up over the aspen laden high hills between I-70 and the tiny town of Loa. It was spectacular scenery; it had just become light and most important, we had never traveled this nice little section of road before.

Saturday 18 April 2009
We stopped at the Capitol Reef National Park visitors’ center for some information on Cedar Mesa camp and for me to cheerfully purchase my $10 LIFETIME America the Beautiful pass (one of the benefits of being an “oldmantravels”). The lady ranger, who gleefully sold me the pass, smiled when she said, that the pass would expire, when I do.

We stopped often to take photos as we worked our way down the Burr Trail Road south of Notom, Utah to our campsite. We were pleased with what we found. Juniper trees for shade; knock out view of the snow covered Henry Mountains; trailhead to Red Canyon right next to us; and a picnic table; fire pit; and nearby outhouse - - for all the amenities of camping you could want. Most of all it was quiet and uncrowded.

We arrived at camp near mid-day so we ate and organized our camp. I put up our Siltarp so I could sit in my folding camp chair in the shade. My wife loves to sit in the sun and I have always preferred the shade. Soon, we had the camp ready to our liking so we shouldered our day packs, and headed out for a five mile (with side scrambles) hike, up into scenic “Red Canyon”.

A swarm of gnats attacked us at camp, when we returned to camp so we took a short hike across the road until the combination of increased wind and decreased temperatures, removed our tormentors. We slept well in our truck canopy bed that night, though it got so cold that our water bottles in the cab of the truck, froze.

Sunday 19 April 2009
After a great night’s sleep, we fixed breakfast and repacked the truck to a bright sunny, if cool, desert morning. After leaving Cedar Mesa Camp, we turned south and drove along the capitol reef to the intersection of the Burr Trail leading up over the reef and through nice canyon country to Boulder, Utah.

We stopped frequently along this scenic road to take short scrambling hikes to viewpoints, wildflowers, or just for the fun of it through the slickrock country (always with camera at ready).

At the top of the switchback road up to the top of the reef we turned north on a four wheel drive road to visit “Peek-a-boo” rock and walk some of the washes in the area. An ice chest full of cold diet Pepsi, was always handy back at our pickup truck, and appreciated.

We stopped along a short, sweet, steep, narrow canyon along the paved portion of the Burr Trail and I took a fast hike to the headwall, to get a few photos. It was here, that I had my first, of many, “raven” encounters we would have during this trip. The raven became the “colophon, hallmark, and icon” for this road trip.

Before leaving home a good flickr friend of mine (petalouda62) from Belgium, had recommended a book for me. I bought it and saved it to read on this trip, which I did, every chance I got, when we weren’t hiking. The book: Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich. I thought I knew quite a bit about these highly intelligent, often mischievous, and often aloof birds - - but I would find in the book both entertainment and interesting information on these “wolf-birds”.

So deep in this short dead end sandstone canyon, I heard the constant calling, echoing back and forth down the canyon. As soon as I left the canyon and turned to take a few more photos of it - - silently down and out of the canyon, glided the resident raven. It was one of many magic moments on this trip, involving Corvus corax. Thank you Roberta.

We reached highway 12 at Boulder, Utah and drove on to Escalante, where we had a motel room reserved for Sunday and Monday nights (Circle “D”). Robert is the live in manager of the friendly little Escalante, Utah motel, and it is where we always try to stay when in the area.

Dinner at Escalante Outfitters, and a visit to the Escalante visitors’ center, completed our fun second full day of this road trip.

Pano Rochester Creek panel

Pano Rochester Creek panel

Five photo pano of Rochester Creek rock art panel.

The Rochester Creek rock art panel near Emery, Utah consists of mostly petroglyphs, some in the Fremont style (700-1300 AD). The Fremont culture was contemporaneous with the Anasazi.

This panel clearly has some Fremont petroglyphs as well as more modern "rock art and grafitti". Ute Indians may have produced some. A few experts feel there are some much older Barrier Canyon style figures at this location.

The white strip you see along the top of the panel is likely "rock art" that has been chipped off and stolen in more modern (and many ways - pathetic, times).
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Basics: Petroglyphs were "pecked" into a rock surface. Pictographs were "painted" onto a rock surface.

Some of the pictographs found in Utah are over 3,000 years old. The paint the native American used to make many of the Colorado Plateau pictographs consisted of ground hematite mixed with animal fat and and bird eggs. The paint was absorbed into the sandstone matrix and when protected from the elements (and morons - modern vandals); have lasted thousands of years.

Dating petroglyphs can be tricky, even for trained scientists, who many times must depend on "style" and other clues associated with the rock art to date the rock art. Pictographs have the advantage of having organic materials used in their creation, which may aid dating.

NOTE: If you have a deep interest in rock art (pictographs and petroglyphs) of the American Southwest then get the excellent book titled: "Legacy on Stone" by Sally J. Cole. This is not "page turner" reading and gets pretty technical at times, but if you want some well researched facts and information on the rock art and their presumed creators, then get her book.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We drove through the night from our home in Eastern Washington to downtown - - Emery, Utah.

I always fill up with gas whenever wandering around back country roads, so I stopped at Emery to fill up our pickup truck and to ask some questions about the points of interest we wanted to visit. I have heard that some men don't like asking for directions or information, but I'm not one of them. I learn a LOT from asking local folks, who know the area, for the latest hiking, sight seeing, and travel information.

I met a really nice couple, who ran the small store and gas station at Emery. They confirmed our planned travel plans to reach the trailhead for the Rochester Creek rock art panel hike.

I casually asked about how rough the road might be from Moore to I-70 (Called the Moore Cutoff Road locally), and was astonished to hear that it was now paved and you could whisk along at 55 mph. This was good news, since the Head of Sinbad rock art panel was going to be our next destination that afternoon. It was also where we hoped we could "car camp".

The couple handed me a pamphet titled: "San Rafael Country" which had a nice map, photos, and up to date information on the points of interest in the area. See: [www.sanrafaelcountry.com]

We welcomed the warm weather to hike in and we both enjoyed the hike and the pictographs and petroglyphs of the area. It is always fun to try to get inside the mind of the "artist" who created the rock art, hundreds and many cases, thousands, of years ago.

Road Trip - Utah April 17th - 24th, 2010: My wife and I headed for Southern Utah, just before midnight on Friday the 16th of April (after she got off work at her part time job). We drove straight through to Southern Utah, to take advantage of the good weather forecast early on in our trip. Storms were forecast for later in the trip and in fact we got a pretty good taste of same on Wednesday the 21st.

Here in outline form are the places we visited and hiked:

Saturday 4.17.2010
> Rochester Rock Art Panel near Emery, Utah
> The Moore cutoff road
> Sinbad’s head pictograph panel (we camped under a pinon pine near here)

Sunday 4.18.2010
> Black Dragon Canyon rock art panel (after first taking the wrong turn and doing some interesting four wheel drive travel way up the San Rafael River). Short hike.
> Pictograph Canyon pictographs. Short but interesting hike.
> Drive Hanksville, Torrey, Boulder, to Escalante (check into motel)

Monday 4.19.2010
> Drive out the Hole In The Rock Road. Visit Devil’s Garden and Metate Arch.
> Drive to Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch. Hike down to Peek-a-boo and Spooky slot canyons. I hiked the loop up Peek-a-boo and down Spooky while my wife hiked with another lady hiker up Dry Fork and then down to the bottom of Spooky.

Tuesday 4.20.2010
> Hike Lower Calf Creek Falls (my third hike here and my wife’s second) and scramble up to two sets of pictograph panels.

Wednesday 4.21.2010

Locomotive Point cliffs

Locomotive Point cliffs

Like so much of Southern Utah, the canyon and cliff walls of various sandstone formations, make for tremendous natural beauty. These cliffs were near the Head of Sinbad panel pictographs we wanted to see.

After we completed our hike to the Rochester Creek rock art panel, we drove the Moore Cutoff road to I-70. It had been a long day and we hoped to get as close as we could to the “Head of Sinbad” pictograph panels, where we wanted to camp for the night in the back of our pickup truck.

I had all kinds of maps and copies from various guide books, along with the pamphlet the folks at the Emery, Utah gas station had given me. Still I wanted to make sure we would head in the right direction so we wouldn’t waste valuable “road trip” find, by getting lost in the wide open desert country of the San Rafael Swell.

We took exit 131 off I-70. I had traveled the Temple Mt. road to Goblin Valley in the past, and this looked like the “shortest” way into Locomotive Point and the Head of Sinbad panels. The BLM map on the information board on the south side of I-70 cinched it. It clearly showed the turns I needed to make and the BLM road numbers I would take to get to our destination. It was getting late in the day so we headed down the dirt road, making a right at the proper place and then we came to the “culvert” passage that would take us back under I-70, heading north.

The dirt road was easy up to this point, but the “rock ramp” built up by off road enthusiasts to get through one of the two big culvert passages looked like it required due care and caution. Once under the interstate the sandy route to Locomotive Point was a pleasure to travel.

We visited the two panel areas. I am going to give them some names so I can refer to them more easily in this narrative. The Head of Sinbad panels face south and are little more than a mile north of I-70. In fact, now that I know where they are, I will be able to easily pick the area out, when driving I-70 between Green River, Utah and Fremont Junction.

The Head of Sinbad “west panel” was disappointing. The heads were missing for the entire row of pictographs. What I have read is that these 3,000 year old pictographs have not been vandalized, yet to me, it looked as though the missing upper portion of the pictographs - - didn’t look natural (if so, the heads should be laying on the ground, below where they fell - -they weren’t).

Next we drove over to the Head of Sinbad “West panel”. This was what we had come to see and it was impressive. There are two sets of figures on at the West panel and they are not far apart. Though the day was almost gone, we spent time staring up at these intriguing pictographs and taking photographs.

Next we drove west then north on a very sandy four wheel drive track until we found a side road leading up to a sandstone cliff sheltered camping spot, under a large pinon pine tree. Here we slept the night under a black desert sky filled with brilliant white stars. Wonderful!

Early the next morning, while my wife organized our traveling gear I clambered up the steep sides of the surrounding sandstone to get some “dawn” photos of the area we had camped. After leaving camp we opted to skip visiting the nearby arch and get back to the West panel of the pictographs, to have the area to ourselves and get some photos with the early morning light. This we did.

After retracing our route back to I-70 we headed east bound for the Black Dragon panel and for a hike up nearby Petroglyph Canyon.

Massage Envy Interior

The afternoon sun was unbearable in the front lobby of Massage Envy North Hills. After the shade install, the employees seemed to be very pleased that the glare is no longer and issue with their displays. From an aesthetic standpoint, you can hardly see that a shade has been installed and seeing through the material is no problem.

Torre Agbar (Barcelona, Spain)

Torre Agbar (Barcelona, Spain)

The tower has a total of 50,693 square metres, of which 30,000 are in offices, 3,210 in technical facilities, 8,132 in services, including an auditorium, and 9,132 square metres for parking.
It opened in June 2005. Building cost was of 130 million euros.
The building is owned by the multinational group Agbar which has its corporate headquarters in the building and that takes up most of the floors, renting the remainder.
According to Jean Nouvel, the shape of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat, a mountain near Barcelona, and by the shape of a geyser rising into the air.
Its design combines a number of different architectural concepts, resulting in a striking structure built with reinforced concrete, covered with a facade of glass, and over 4,500 window openings cut out of the structural concrete. The building stands out in Barcelona; it is the third tallest building in Barcelona, only after the Arts Hotel and the Mapfre Tower, both 154 m (505.25 ft).
A defining feature of the building is its nocturnal illumination. It has 4,500 LED luminous devices that allow generation of luminous images in the facade. The system is capable of creating 16 million colors, thanks to a sophisticated system of hardware and software. It has the ability to quickly transition between colors which can create a shocking effect.
In addition, it has temperature sensors in the outside of the tower that regulate the opening and closing of the window blinds of the facade of the building, reducing the consumption of energy for air conditioning.
The construction, as explained by Nouvel himself was strongly influenced by one of the most representative symbols of Catalan culture. On one side was inspired by the work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi reference to the bell towers of the Sagrada Familia.

I did not get enough sleep last night.

And instead of having a laid back day at work, I spent an hour discussing my new project with the VP, 2 hours in a meeting about software requirements, and 2.5 hours in a client meeting talking about Air Force processes.

My brain turned to tapioca and promptly started leaking out of my left ear. It's kind of messy. ;-P
