Chaparral in Poway, California

Chaparral in Poway, California

I believe this area is still recovering from wildfire a few years back.

Chaparral habitat can support a wide variety of animals. Natural communities near the coast in Southern California are like a swirling mosaic of grassland, scrub, chaparral, woodland, and forests. Spanish explorers adopted the word 'chaparral' from the Spanish 'chaparro', a low growing type of vegetation.

Chaparral covers about 10 million acres of California. Many important watersheds are vegetated with chaparral and it occupies the same 300 to 3,000 foot elevation belt as grassland, savanna, and woodland. These communities coil and mix into each other because of local differences in soil depth and chemistry, frequency of wildfire, and aspect of slopes.

It may be an impenetrable layer of shrubs 4 - 8 ft tall with evergreen, sclerophyllous leaves, and intricate canopies. The ground is usually bare and stony although in this picture, and many places, prickly with invasive thistle plants. Other common native plants in chaparral (particularly in the Central Valley) are Scrub Oak (Quercus dumosa), Toyon, California Coffeeberry, and more than 20 species of manzanita and ceanothus. An occasional California Bay Laurel Tree (Umbellularia californica) or Foothill Pine may stand out. Most chaparral shrubs are twiggy rather than leafy. Many leaves will be small and vertically oriented, casting little shade and conserving water. Chaparral is a drought-tolerant landscape cover.

Development of chaparral may be economically unwise. Fire is an integral part of this landscape, possibly exposing nearby homeowners to intense chaparral fire (intensity of 12,000 BTUs per second per foot in winds of only six miles per hour, and soil surface temperatures of 1,000 degrees F - hot enough to melt aluminum - which may persist for as long as 20 minutes on the surface. Fire bombs of hot air and burning wood can be hurled easily tens of yards).

Roots and seeds and animals in burrows deeper than 4 inches may be merely warmed for a few minutes. Some seeds will lay for decades in the soil until a fire will scorch their coat enough to crack open and germinate. In many places chaparral fires follow each other on a natural 20-25 year cycle. It is rare to find unburned chaparral strand older than 50 years. When such old strands do burn, the firestorms are especially intense from the accumulated biomass.

Managing fires in chaparral vegetation is controversial. It means major changes in landscape, watershed, and natural diversity of an area. Chaparral has a natural resilience and relation to fire, that is important to consider.

Shiny Leafed Wild Coffee is a shade tolerant native shrub with flowers that attract butterflies and fruits that attract birds. The shiny leaves are an attractive, eye catching addition to any yard.

Wild Coffee will grow in sun or shade. It tends to grow taller (up to 10 ft.) and spread out more (up to 8 ft.) in a shady setting while full sunlight keeps the plant smaller. Wild Coffee does well in a wide range of soils from acidic to alkaline and is moderately drought tolerant. It does not tolerate freezing which explains why South Florida is the northern extent of this plants range. Aside from Florida it is a common understory shrub in the West Indies, Southern Mexico, Central America and some areas in South America.

Early settlers in Florida brewed a coffee substitute drink from the seeds of this plant.

street prostitute 36: photographing Ronda

street prostitute 36: photographing Ronda

I get out of the car and lean against the hood. If Ronda does keep me waiting, at least I can spend the time taking in the stirrings of spring. The jonquils are already in bloom...the redbuds will be bursting forth any day...the birds are beginning to sing...

"Mar—Mar—Mar—Marcie—"

Ronda is suddenly back. A sweater draped over one arm, she is stuttering her hooker friend Marcie's name.

Very emotionally, her voice breaking, she tells me Marcie had just admitted that she did indeed have the ring that Ronda thought she had stolen from her. And then, after Ronda told her she could keep it, Marcie had started to cry...

Ronda seems so moved by this, I'm thinking. Really and truly and genuinely moved...

Suddenly she grabs my shirt—just below my neck— twists it—hard —and jerks me toward her—

"Give me some money for a pill—or I'm gonna kill you!"

"WHAT!?" I'm shocked.

She releases my shirt. Her tone had been only half kidding.

"You're full of shit," I say. "What are you talking about? You know I'm not gonna do that."

"I'm getting strung out again, George. I discovered the other day I'm getting strung out again... Please. "

"I will not!" I declare.

"Pleeeeease!"

"I told you what the deal was before. And I'm not changing."

"Don't be on principle!"

"That's not—"

"Fuck principle!" She's almost shouting.

"That's not just principle."

"Principle sucks, man!"

I back up: "What do you mean...you're... What do you mean that you're stru— You said you discovered the other day that you're strung out again."

"I am, I'm strung out again. I know I am."

"All right, explain to me what that means... That you're strung out again."

She yells her answer—

"I—WANT—A—FUCKING—PILL!"

"Okay"—my voice is normal, or fairly normal—"but that doesn't mean strung out. I thought, basically, strung out, the way you've used the term strung out...was that you had to have it so damned much and you were doing it constantly— "

Ronda interrupts: "I have been doing it constantly—that's the problem."

"Well, Melvin said you've been averaging two a day. How many have you really been averaging?"

"Five or six. He don't know what I've been doing."

"Okay. You've been doing five or six a day?"

"I'll give you this watch."

"You've been averaging five or six a day for how long?"

"I don't know! "

She clenches her teeth in frustration.

"A week?" I push. "Two weeks? A month?"

No answer from Ronda.

"Two months?"

Still no answer.

Then: "Since my coat got stolen. At least. Before then. I don't wanna talk about it. Pleeease, George, what can I do?”

"You have been averaging five or six a day for...a month? And Melvin doesn't know that. Is that correct?"

"What have I got to do?" she asks—no, demands. "Have a goddamn—" She stops.

"Is that correct?"

"Yeah." [Sounding definitive.]

"Okay. Well, this is what I've been asking you for a long time, was to tell me the truth about the pills. So you're getting strung out? "

"I am strung out."

Now I raise my voice:

"But you're not getting strung out like you have been, Ronda! Because I know how you were."

"Well, lemmee..." She gives a frustrated little sigh. "You can have everything in my house," she offers. "You can have Melvin included. You can have me. "

I just look at her.

"I'll be your personal slave for a week," she says—and laughs. "You can say, 'Ronda...'"

"You're lying. You have not been doing five or six a day for that long."

"I have," she contends. Her brow furrows... "A hundred and fifty, two hundred...about three hundred dollars a day. That's six, right? Yeah."

"So where do you shoot up?" I ask, looking her hard in the eye.

"Here. At Rick's. They don't tell anybody. [Pauses.] What can I do?"

"So... So you're strung out again..."

"What can I do?" she interrupts, repeating her question more forcefully.

"Well, what do you usually do?"

A sound of exasperation is her response.

Then suddenly I'm wondering:

Did she mean something more by her question? Something more crucial? More hopeful?

So quickly I ask: "What can you do about what?"

"George," she answers," I

Rubber Ducky

Rubber Ducky

The great thing about shooting with an improv comic actor is that you can pretty much throwing anything at them and say, "hey, be funny with that", and they will. Eric explored putting the whole thing in his mouth, and basically gave oral birth to the rubber duck. Yeah I know! Afterwards he demanded water and a mint because it apparently tasted like rubber...go figure!

The red curtain is a pulled drape that was already in place for the glass sliding doors at Eric's home. One challenge shooting on location is finding good backdrops to work with, somedays I'm just lucky.

Strobist info:
This was shot using a single Nikon SB800. Held with a boom stand directly over head and slightly right, with a shoot through umbrella. On the dining table directly below Eric was my 36" gold reflector.

Mahonia x media 'Lionel Fortescue'

Mahonia x media 'Lionel Fortescue'

Who was Lionel Fortescue?

Garden House, near Buckland Monachorum in Devon, is a sixteenth century vicarage on the edge of Dartmoor with a garden made by an enthusiastic plant collector, Lionel Fortescue. Lionel Stanhope Fortescue was born in 1892. He died in 1981.

The 8-acre garden has terraces and a large, beautiful and recently refurbished walled garden. There is a wild flower meadow, quarry garden, cottage garden, South African garden, acer glade and oval garden with an undulating wall. The planting is naturalistic.

From Wikipedia -
Mahonia is a genus of about 70 species of evergreen shrubs in the family Berberidaceae, native to eastern Asia, the Himalaya, North America and Central America.

They are closely related to the genus Berberis. Botanists disagree on the acceptability of the genus name Mahonia. Several authorities argue plants in this genus should be included in the genus Berberis because several species in both genera are able to hybridize, and because when the two genera are looked at as a whole, there is no definite morphological separation. Mahonia typically have large, pinnate leaves 10-50 cm long with 5-15 leaflets, and flowers in racemes (5-20 cm long).

The genus name Mahonia honors the Philadelphia horticulturist Bernard McMahon who introduced the plant from materials collected by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The type species of the genus is Mahonia aquifolium, (Oregon-grape) from the Pacific coast of North America.

Several species are popular garden shrubs, grown for their ornamental evergreen foliage, yellow flowers in autumn, winter and early spring, and blue-black berries. The berries are edible, and rich in vitamin C, though with a very sharp flavor.

Mahonia ? media is an interspecific hybrid shrub. Its parents are Mahonia lomariifolia and Mahonia japonica. It was raised in gardens during the 20th century, and has become an important garden and landscape plant. The various hybrids show some variation, but are generally intermediate in most characteristics between the two parents.

The plants are especially valued in the garden because of their ornamental leaves, and because they flower through the winter. They grow extremely well in shady conditions. They are also a very effective inclusion in an informal security hedge.

I got my corals from a bawa at Chor Bazar.. I have a better quality than what I am wearing..I wera these sometimes I wear dure najaf and turquoise

What is coral. A coral, unlike most other gemstones is actually the skeletal remains of marine polyps. The polyps are surrounded by a fleshy skin and excrete a carbonic substance from which the coral grows like trees and branches. This happens in the warm waters of the ocean at depths of around 10 to 500 feet where various coral species survive. In some places saltwater corals also exist.

Precious corals or red corals are called corallium rubrum, a word that is derived from a Latin word related to the Greek word Koralliom. The hard skeletons of the red coral branches have a matte look and are therefore dull. However, these can be polished to a beautiful shine for use as precious gems. A coral, therefore, like a pearl, can be categorized as an organic gem material.

The history tells us that the oldest coral to be used in coral jewelry was thousands of years ago around 3000 B.C. For almost 2000 years, the Romans used the coral gemstone extensively and made it popular.

In India, this gem is known by various names like mangal, moonga and pavlam. This gemstone is one of the Navagraha stones (stones that represent the nine planets that have a cosmic influence on all earthlings) and represents Mars (Mangal). It is related to attributes like courage, initiative, vitality, vigor, aggression. Coral has a special significance in Indian astrology and has found mention in ancient Indian Vedic Literature. It is one of the many starts that have an important place in the study of star signs.

Coral gemstones are known to have many healing powers and are specifically associated with the circulatory system of the body and known to have helped in curing many blood-related diseases. It is also used as a holistic aid in ensuring recovery from diseases indicated by the planet Mars, such as fever, cold and cough. For therapeutic purposes, this gem must be set in silver and worn in the ring finger.

Red coral jewelry is still worn as talismans in various cultures. It is presumed that the stone can help in protecting the wearer against evil spirits. In South India it is a tradition for married women to wear coral beads throughout their married life in order to bring peace and harmony into the marriage.

This stone is also said to avert accidents, discord and warfare. It is believed that wearing a coral can help in improving financial health and reducing debt.
Composition of Coral Gemstone

The basic composition of this gem is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the form of fibrous calcite accompanied by around 3 percent magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), organic matter and traces of iron. It is a semi-translucent to opaque material. The specific gravity is 2.65 and refractive index ranges between 1.486 and 1.658. It`s hardness on the Mohs scale is 3.5 to 4.
Physical Properties of Gem Coral

Coral Color

There are different types of corals that provide corals of different hues. Gem coral occurs in white, pink, orange, red, blue, violet, gold and black. The black and golden coral types differ from the white to red in that they are not calcium carbonate, but rather a horny substance. But the ones that are mainly used in jewelry are red corals, pink corals and white corals.

Corals from Japan are said to have the ‘ox-blood’ red color. This specific color of the coral is valued highly and has a relatively higher demand in the gemstone market for jewelry like rings, earrings and necklaces. The pink to orange-pink variety are not found to possess a uniform color and therefore are not as popular as the red one. However, if the orange or orange-pink color is uniform, then pink coral jewelry, like a made from these stones has a fair amount of demand in the market.

The blue coral is found in shades that range from bright blue to grey blue. The black coral, sometimes, has brownish-yellow streaks on it.

Cut

Corals are usually cut into spherical and barrel shaped beads and cabochons. It is also carved into figures and statues. Thin branches of coral are usually polished, pierced and used unaltered in jewelry.

Coral roses (roses carved into corals) are very popular and are often used in gold jewelry too. The blue colour is not used in jewelry as often as the red since it does not look as good as a red coral. However, it is sometimes used in bead-necklaces. The black coral has a horny structure and its thin tentacles-like branches are used (just as they are naturally formed), in multi strand necklaces and bracelets.

Carat

They are not found in very large sizes. Sizes of up to 10cts are quite common, though.

Clarity

It is mainly opaque and may have some surface markings that are clearly seen. Some of the most common surface markings on a coral are the wood grain effect, groove pits and striations.

West 71st Street Historic District

West 71st Street Historic District

Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

INTRODUCTION
This small, nearly block-long historic district achieves its special quality from a number of factors.
(1) It is a secluded enclave on the Upper West Side, set apart from the pattern of through-streets by its unique development history. The street has always been a cul-de-sac since railroad tracks, shielded by a wall, occupy the land immediately to the west.
(2) The district was largely developed over the course of three years (1893-96) with 33 rowhouses, built in six groups designed by four architectural firms, all in variations of the Renaissance Revival style. Each group was designed as a harmonious unit, but individual houses vary in their details. Since four of the groups were designed by two architectural firms, even further unity is created. Within each group, the houses are paired, or a larger rhythm is created through the window placement and configuration, use of bowed and flat facades, and variations in stoops and porticoes.
A slightly later town house from 1903-04 stands at No. 305 on the north side of the street. This is compatible with the rows in style, form, and details. The six-story brick apartment building at No. 319-325 was built in 1924 on a lot that was still vacant prior to construction.
(3) The historic district is given further distinction by the use of harmonious facade materials (brownstone on the south side, brick, stone and terra cotta on the north side), classically-inspired details, uniform cornice heights, and the use of such elements as stoops, bows, and oriels which create a sense of depth on the facades.
(4) Alterations to the exteriors of the houses have been minimal. Thus the historic character of the district is reinforced, and the sense of place even further enhanced.

Historical Background
Although its history can be traced as far back as the seventeenth century, the Upper West Side, including the section of West 71st Street included in the West 71st Street Historic District, remained largely undeveloped until the 1880s. Prior to its urbanization the area was known as Bloomingdale (or "Bloemendael" by the early Dutch settlers) in recollection of a flower-growing region of Holland.

In the early eighteenth century, Bloomingdale Road was opened through the area, following the course of an old Indian trail, and provided the main link to the city at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. Gradually, some wealthy New Yorkers established country seats in the hinterlands around the Bloomingdale Road. While the area remained rural, by the early nineteenth century four small villages had developed in Bloomingdale, including Harsenville, a hamlet centered around the present West 70th Street and Broadway.

The Upper West Side was included in the Randel Survey (Commissioners' Map) of 1811 which planned a uniform grid of broad avenues and narrow cross streets to be imposed upon the rolling hills of Manhattan. Many years elapsed, however, before most streets in rural Bloomingdale were actually laid out. During this time New York City was rapidly growing northward, but development was largely concentrated on the East Side, following the march uptown of New York's wealthy citizens and the city's transit lines. The creation of Central Park (a designated New York City Scenic landmark), begun in 1857, spurred growth in areas around the Park's perimeter, setting off the first wave of real estate speculation on the Upper West Side (in this case, limited to Central Park West).

Several civic improvements also contributed to the eventual development of the Upper West Side. In 1864 the Eighth Avenue horse car line was extended to 84th Street. Previously the only transit facility was a stage line along Bloomingdale Road. The Commissioners of Central Park were authorized to complete the laying out of streets west of Central Park in 1865. Bloomingdale Road (renamed the Boulevard and later Broadway) was widened in 1868-71 and received central, planted malls from 59th to 155th Streets. The biggest boost to development of the area west of Broadway was the creation, between 1876 and 1900, of Riverside Park and Drive north of 72nd Street, near the Hudson River (a designated New York City Scenic landmark). Construction in the area was further stimulated by the completion of the Ninth Avenue Elevated Railroad in 1879.

A wave of real estate speculation following the Civil War was followed by the financial Panic of 1873, which led to a period of stagnation in the building trades. This, along with high real estate prices and delays in civic improvements, again slewed development of the Upper West Side. Further delays were caused by a lack of agreement among developers as to the type of buildings to be constructed here. Although Central Park West and Riverside Drive were envisioned as residential avenues for the wealthy, on a par with Fifth Avenue, there was no consensus about the future character of the rest of the

What to do with Venus Fly Traps

What to do with Venus Fly Traps

----- Original Message -----
From: AN
To: Stephen E. Jones
Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2010 2:20 AM
Subject: Re: Venus' Flytrap

Thanks for your reply Stephen. I see from your website you seek explanation for carnivorous plant evolution.

Presumably you are referring to my 2007 post, "Re: Carnivorous plants as `Behe's mousetrap' #1" (there was no #2) and/or my 2006 web page "Problems of Evolution: 12. Plants: Carnivorous plants"?

In each my request was for "a detailed, step-by-step, Darwinian explanation of how the natural selection of random micromutations produced the ... Venus flytrap":

"I would like to see a detailed, step-by-step, Darwinian explanation of how the natural selection of random micromutations produced the elaborate traps of carnivorous plants, like the pitcher plant and the Venus flytrap.

But I suspect there are none, because if there were, the Darwinists would not waste there time on peppered moths and finch beaks!

Like Behe's mousetrap, all these parts are needed to be working together simultaneously as a coordinated system to catch insects."

And as for "evolution," I am persuaded by the evidence, both scientific and Biblical, that "evolution," i.e. "the standard scientific theory that `human beings [and all other living things] have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process"(my emphasis):

"... perhaps we should not be surprised at the results of a 2001 Gallup poll confirming that 45 percent of Americans believe `God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so'; 37 percent prefer a blended belief that `human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process'; and a paltry 12 percent accept the standard scientific theory that `human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process.'" (Shermer, M.B., 2002, "The Gradual Illumination of the Mind," Scientific American, February. My emphasis)

is false and the true explanation of life's origin and development is my General Theory of Progressive Mediate Creation, i.e."that God created the raw materials of the universe immediately from out-of-nothing, and thereafter He created mediately by working (both naturally and supernaturally) through natural processes and existing materials."

This is my specialty. Venus' Flytrap evolved step-by-step from Sundews (Drosera sp.) as confirmed by gene sequencing.

You commit the fallacies of Equivocation and Begging the question by claiming that "Venus' Flytrap evolved ... from Sundews" when all "gene sequencing" can show is they shared a common ancestor, which is not necessarily evolution.

As both Darwin and Dawkins admitted, God could have supernaturally intervened at links in the chains of common descent, in which case it would not be "evolution at all" (my emphasis):

"Darwin ... wrote in a letter to Sir Charles Lyell, the leading geologist of his day: `If I were convinced that I required such additions to the theory of natural selection, I would reject it as rubbish...I would give nothing for the theory of Natural selection, if it requires miraculous additions at any one stage of descent.' ....

For Darwin, any evolution that had to be helped over the jumps by God was not evolution at all." (Dawkins, R., 1986, "The Blind Watchmaker, pp.248-249. My emphasis).

but a form of "divine creation" (my emphasis):

"... many theologians ... smuggle God in by the back door: they allow him some sort of supervisory role over the course that evolution has taken ... influencing key moments in evolutionary history ...

In short, divine creation, whether instantaneous or in the form of guided evolution, joins the list of other theories we have considered in this chapter." (Dawkins, 1986, pp.316-317. My emphasis).

And since I accept Universal Common Ancestry (see my "Why I (a Creationist) Accept Common Ancestry (Not Evolution)" I have no problem if Venus Flytrap shared a common ancestor with Sundews (Drosera sp.).

Nevertheless, according to Wikipedia, "Scientists are currently unsure about the evolutionary history of the Venus flytrap" and have only "made hypotheses that the flytrap evolved from Drosera (sundews)":

"The edges of the lobes are fringed by stiff hair-like protrusions or cilia, which mesh together and prevent large prey from escaping.

(These protrusions, and the trigger hairs, also known as sensitive hairs, are probably homologous with the tentacles found in this plant's close relatives, the sundews.)

Scientists are currently unsure about the evolutionary history of the Venus flytrap; however scientists have made hypotheses that the flytrap evolved

Cher Ami "Dear Friend" WWI

Cher Ami

Probably the most famous of all the carrier pigeons was one named Cher Ami, two French words meaning "Dear Friend". Cher Ami several months on the front lines during the Fall of 1918. He flew 12 important missions to deliver messages. Perhaps the most important was the message he carried on October 4, 1918.

Mr. Charles Whittlesey was a lawyer in New York, but when the United States called for soldiers to help France regain its freedom, Whittlesey joined the Army and went to Europe to help. He was made the commander of a battalion of soldiers in the 77th Infantry Division, known as "The Liberty Division" because most of the men came from New York and wore a bright blue patch on their shoulders that had on it the STATUE OF LIBERTY.

On October 3, 1918 Major Whittlesey and more than 500 men were trapped in a small depression on the side of the hill. Surrounded by enemy soldiers, many were killed and wounded in the first day. By the second day only a little more than 200 men were still alive or unwounded.

Major Whittlesey sent out several pigeons to tell his commanders where he was, and how bad the trap was. The next afternoon he had only one pigeon left, Cher Ami.

During the afternoon the American Artillery tried to send some protection by firing hundreds of big artillery rounds into the ravine where the Germans surrounded Major Whittlesey and his men. Unfortunately, the American commanders didn't know exactly where the American soldiers were, and started dropping the big shells right on top of them. It was a horrible situation that might have resulted in Major Whittlesey and all his men getting killed--by their own army.

Major Whittlesey called for his last pigeon, Cher Ami. He wrote a quick and simple note, telling the men who directed the artillery guns where the Americans were located and asking them to stop. The note that was put in the canister on Cher Ami's left leg simply said:

"We are along the road parallel to 276.4.
"Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us.
"For heaven's sake, stop it."

As Cher Ami tried to fly back home, the Germans saw him rising out of the brush and opened fire. For several minutes, bullets zipped through the air all around him. For a minute it looked like the little pigeon was going to fall, that he wasn't going to make it. The doomed American infantrymen were crushed, their last home was plummeting to earth against a very heavy attack from German bullets.

Somehow Cher Ami managed to spread his wings and start climbing again, higher and higher beyond the range of the enemy guns. The little bird flew 25 miles in only 25 minutes to deliver his message. The shelling stopped, and more than 200 American lives were saved...all because the little bird would never quit trying.

On his last mission, Cher Ami was badly wounded. When he finally reached his coop, he could fly no longer, and the soldier that answered the sound of the bell found the little bird laying on his back, covered in blood. He had been blinded in one eye, and a bullet had hit his breastbone, making a hole the size of a quarter. From that awful hole, hanging by just a few tendons, was the almost severed leg of the brave little bird. Attached to that leg was a silver canister, with the all-important message. Once again, Cher Ami wouldn't quit until he had finished his job.

Cher Ami became the hero of the 77th Infantry Division, and the medics worked long and hard to patch him up. When the French soldiers that the Americans were fighting to help learned they story of Cher Ami's bravery and determination, they gave him one of their own country's great honors. Cher Ami, the brave carrier pigeon was presented a medal called the French Croix de guerre with a palm leaf.

Though the dedicated medics saved Cher Ami's life, they couldn't save his leg. The men of the Division were careful to take care of the little bird that had saved 200 of their friends, and even carved a small wooden leg for him. When Cher Ami was well enough to travel, the little one-legged hero was put on a boat to the United States. The commander of all of the United States Army, the great General John J. Pershing, personally saw Cher Ami off as he departed France.

Back in the United States the story of Cher Ami was told again and again. The little bird was in the newspapers, magazines, and it seemed that everyone knew his name. He became one of the most famous heroes of World War I. Years after the war a man named Harry Webb Farrington decided to put together a book of poems and short stories about the men and heroes of World War I. When his book was published, it contained a special poem dedicated to Cher Ami:
