Where My Skeleton's Hiding

Where My Skeleton's Hiding

So upon seeing all these Avril Lavigne ads of her using a Canon Rebel XSi, I was somewhat happy to find out that my first camera (that wasn't video) was actually a Nikon point and shoot. I took some fine photos with this camera as a kid. Check out how filthy it is. I found this while trying to find my Atlantis DVD... That's correct, Disney's Atlantis.

In either case, I knew that red colour on the grip of the D90 seemed a little familiar...

Photography ... where did it start for you? What is your first memory? I always liked cameras since i was little but never actually considered it a hobby. It wasn't really till 3 years ago that I started paying closer attention to cameras.

This snapshot is of my dad's first film SLR camera that he bought many years ago. I remember I went to the store with him when I was little. He came across some bonus money and decided to invest in this camera. That was the first time (an I think the only time) I saw a $1000 dollar Canadian bill. I remember the sale person's face expression ... he also didn't believe it.

This camera has been in the our family for many years now. There have been multiple occasions where my dad considered selling this camera for extra income ... but it never was meant to be.

Three years ago he passed the camera to me and asked me to sell it or do whatever I saw fit. I briefly looked online and there really wasn't going to be any type of payout for this camera. I decided to keep it as a memory for myself and have story to share with my kids.

ddung fakies on film pentax espio 115

While in Ottawa for Thanksgiving, I stumbled upon a Pentax Espio 115 (film camera) at Value Village (a Canadian thrift store chain) for $4.00!

Having never owned a Pentax camera before, I jumped on it. It's missing its remote control, but it has a timer, so it's okay.

I didn't have the instruction book, so most of the pics on the roll ended up poop, but a few came out okay.

I found the instruction manual online and printed them out, so hopefully all subsequent shots will be good ones!

The dollies are Ddung fakies from Dollarama - $1.00 each! They were called "Petite Divas." The dresses that they were wearing were cheap and icky, so I knitted them a couple little frocks. I think they look pretty cute!

This building has so much character, it was originally built in 1824 but rebuilt or expanded in 1927. On the Black Tuesday Bushfires in Tasmania in 1967 where much of the state was wiped out, it was partially burnt down, but restored quickly.

Hacked.

Hacked.

Today I woke up and decided to try hacking my iPod Touch. Rob at work had done it, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Long story short: mission accomplished! I even figured out how to rearrange the icons on my screen, even though i left the original ones just where they were. You can even switch out the bottom dock icons.

My iPod Touch is now an iPhone minus the phone part. So I've got all of the standard iPhone apps: google maps, weather and stock widgets, notes, Mail, and i've enabled the ability to add calendar events (two lines of code is all it took – adding events to the calendar was disabled for the Touch).

Thanks to the awesome world of hackers and 3rd party developers (you guys rock), i've got the NES emulator, Apollo instant messenger (serves msn, aim, a whole bunch of others), navizon GPS, sketches (like an etch-a-sketch, you even shake it to erase the image), and a whole bunch of other stuff. I am a huge apple fanboy, but i'll be damned if they don't understand that opening the iphone/touch is the way to go.

The only handicap this has is that all the web-enabled services are only useful if i'm on a wi-fi network. With the iphone you can access them through Edge anywhere as long as you've got cellular coverage.

Until the iphone comes to canada, this will do :)

and wow, photographing something that's backlit is quite a bitch, isn't it?

I took a new Canon D10 on vacation to Spain this past week and used it in a variety of situations, incluing here, in this underwater shot.

I found the camera took great photo's and worked great as a "beach camera," meaning a "go anywhere, any condition camera."

It's a true point and shoot, with no manual controls. It has a lot of scene settings, and here in this photo, I used the underwater scene setting. Actually, I found the underwater setting to be a good setting for "general" shots as well.

It's a great opportunity to use your camcorder to video all the important moments in your life without having to fear the thought ofany possible damage. In the great outdoors there is the problem though that most of the places you want to take your camcorder - andtake video footage - there's the danger of substances like water or dust or dirt or sand coming in contact with your camcorder. Stuff that your camcorder could really do without. Stuff that's capable of ruining the equipment that allows you to remember those great moments.

Fallen Tree (Multi-Image Composite w/ large format) - Test

Fallen Tree (Multi-Image Composite w/ large format) - Test

I hiked the Konza Prairie Trail, which is a few miles outside of Manhattan, Kansas. The trail takes you along some wooded areas and across some beautiful rolling hills. This was a picture taking adventure to primarily test the logistics of hiking with a large format camera. My gear weighs about 30lbs total, so it is doable but it takes quite a bit of time to setup, tear down, and carry everything. Things mostly went okay, except I was outside a lot longer than expected and got a bit sun burnt. I was partially prepared and applied ample amounts of DEET while I was along the brush and trees. Ticks can be a problem this time of year!

This is composed of two large format images selectively blended together by hand. I used the wide aperture image which had a low depth of field to create a pleasing frame for the tree stump. Where as the other image had a higher depth of field and was used as the source of the tree stump. I should have stopped down a little further to get a 100% of the tree stump in perfect focus. Next time I will spend a bit more time viewing the ground glass.

This image isn't all that strong from a compositional stand point. The tree stump doesn't stand out enough from the background. So I'm not for sure if I will leave it posted or not. I'm definitely open to critical comments on this image or how it could have been improved given the subject at hand. Feel free to blast away. The biggest problem with getting critical feed back is that the photos that need it the most are the least likely to get a comment. :)

I'm not really that happy with this image. It was more of a test shot all in all, but I was hoping to have caught that moment of intrigue when I saw the tree stump along my hike.

In photography, it is just as important to pay attention to the things that we leave out of an image compared to solely focusing on the subject of interest. The tree stump caught my attention along the hiking trail. It was surrounding by a lot of brush and vegetation making it less than optimal to capture on film. I took two images of the scene--one with a large depth of field and one with a shallow depth of field. I selectively merged these two images together to create a composite image with only the tree stump largely in focus.

The large format negative certainly picked up an enormous amount of detail, but that doesn't make for a great image. I find that this image looks a lot better when viewed large and in black. The detail becomes visible and your eye more easily locks on to the subject of interest. The eyes tend to gravitate to what is in focus in an image. I think the reason why this image is weaker as a small picture is that there is simply not enough separation between the tree trunk and its surrounding environment.

If I were to shooting it again, should I have added 1/2 f-stop of exposure and vignetted around the tree trunk? Since the eyes also tend to initially lock on to the brighter areas of an image, that might have helped when viewing the image from a distance or a smaller version.

I went back and re-processed this image. It is a little better, but not outstanding. If I were to shoot this subject again, is there a better way that I could have captured it? Or is there something that I could do in post processing to improve it? Or simply should I have walked away from this one? :)

Buttermere Star Trails

Buttermere Star Trails

Taken on the eastern shore of Buttermere in the Lake District.

This is something I'd intended to do for a long time. I was inspired to venture out into the sub-zero temperatures from the night before when I was travelling to Edinburgh via the A701. We stopped the car and I got out to have a look at the amazing star-studded sky. The Milky Way was very visible so I laid the camera on the cars' roof and popped a 30 second shot. I was quite excited and motivated over the next 24 hours to take this shot the very next night.

The light pollution was obvious and quite surprising because with the naked eye the hue was very much blue. However without the light in the sky the hills would not be defined.

The aircraft going overhead was interesting to see on the picture, seems like they're originating from the VOR station at Moota, branching off on the various radials. A satellite showed up in one test picture and unfortunately numerous shooting stars weren't picked up by the camera as they were too brief.

The hardest part about this shot was deciding where to aim the camera. If I had another 5 cameras they would all be pointing in different directions at the same time, so many possibilities.

PS - as people on Flickr have been asking why the stars are rotating in a circle; it is because the Earth rotates around its axis every 24 hours - thats why we get night and day. If you point the camera towards the centre of this rotation then you get this effect. In the northern hemisphere the current pole star, Polaris, marks the approximate centre of this rotation. Its strange to think that the pole star will change over the next few thousand years, due to precession of the equinoxes, as it has already. We won't be here to witness that though :)

How I did this shot; The camera was placed on the tripod and I shot off some test shots to get the angles right. I then set the TC-80N timer to take one shot after the other using an exposure of around 40 seconds each. The total time was about 45 minutes and the camera took around 80 shots. I then stacked these in Photoshop and a simple tweak of the contrast etc. produced the final image. The intention that night was a quick experiment, I'm glad I did it!

I am so mad about my NEW laptop! I have had it fixed 4 times in a row for the same problem that I have had since the first day! My advice is to never buy an ACER product, because if you get stuck with a lemon like I have they will not replace it, instead they will ship it away for a month and send it back to you without anything being repaired! Their service is horrible and there is no reasoning with them! I have called them repetitively demanding a replacement computer but they tell me that all they can do is send it back for a repair. ACER is incompetent in diagnosing and repairing their products!!!! What company would send you through this much trouble!!

I bought my ACER laptop from my local STAPLES store. The people here are just as incompetent as those working for ACER! The first time I brought in my computer, they tried to fix my computer by reinstaling the sound software, but it did not work. So a week later I went back and had them ship it to ACER for repairs. Two weeks later I stopped by STAPLES to see why my computer had been gone for so long. I went to customer service and asked about my computer and someone found it in a box in the storage room. I had a fealing it had never been sent. It had no paperwork from ACER, and when I called ACER later they said my computer had not been sent to them. HENCE STAPLES never sent my computer away but had it sitting in their storage for two weeks!!!

What is even more outrageous is that I sent my computer away again, this time it got to ACER, but it took 3 WEEKS to get it back. I actually got documentation from ACER on their repairs this time and all they did was reinstall the sound software. The problem with my speakers still persisted, so outraged I went to STAPLES to demand an answer to all the incompetence I had been experiencing. The manager took me into a room seperate from the main part of the store and tried to convince me that I had damaged my speakers on my laptop by turning the volume too high for too long and that ACER's warranty would not cover this. I protested and said that I never used my volume very loud and that you should be able to listen to your speakers at any volume. Even more outraged I left the store and went home and called ACER. I asked one of their customer service employees, "If I turn the volume too high on my laptop for too long could I possibly damage my speakers?" They sounded confused as if they had never been asked that question and replied "Of course not!" So I asked "If my speakers were damaged by being blown would the warranty not cover that?" The repressentative replied "Of course we would cover that" So I asked " If I send back my computer this time you will replace the speakers and the sound should be fine?" The representative replied that the technicians should be able to diagnose and fix the problem.

So I sent my computer away for the third time (second official time since STAPLES never sent it away to ACER the first time) convinced that they would fix the problem this time. I sent the computer to ACER myself instead of letting STAPLES do it for me. I included with my computer a letter of my own diagnosis and that I felt that the speakers should be replaced. This time I had to wait nearly a whole monthe before the computer came back. To my surprise the computer still had the same sound issue!!!! I immediately called ACER and asked them "WHY AM I STILL EXPERIENCING THE SAME SOUND ISSUES!!!!!" they replied that both times they had the computer they did not detect a problem. Outraged I demanded a replacement computer, the customer service representative asked a higher-level technician concerning my demand and replied "Your only option is to send the computer back to us for a re-repair!" I was even more outraged and nearly began shouting "I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO USE MY COMPUTER FOR OVER 2 MONTHS, I AM A UNIVERSITY STUDENT WITH A NEED FOR A COMPUTER TO DO MY ASSIGNMENTS, I CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP SENDING THIS COMPUTER AWAY WHEN YOU ARE TOO INCOMPETENT TO FIX IT!!!!!!" The representative confirmed to me that this time my speakers had been replaced and that all the software had been checked. He tried to convince me that some of the songs I had been playing were corrupted, but I said to him that the sound problems I am experiencing occurs with any sound that the speakers produce and that the problem is not exclusive to any particular song. Confused and outraged I hung up the phone and now I have no idea what to do about my computer!

UPDATE I was really angry when I typed this, I am sorry that I placed so much enpthasis on not buying from my local Staples store or from Acer. What I experienced might just have been random occurance and it should not neccessarily stop anyone from purchasing an Acer product or buying from my local Staples store.

Day 254 - Hand Cannon

Day 254 - Hand Cannon

Well, I went ahead and did it! Finally, after two years since release, I took the plunge and bought myself a Canon 5D Mark II camera to go with my Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I stress to go WITH my old camera since it's not a replacement. A lot of people ask me what I'd do with my XTi at this point and it has always been, and will be, sports photography, and for high risk applications. I love my XTi, it's seen me through Europe, San Francisco, multiple ski hills, and many years of my life - there's no way it's ever going to get replaced or sold off.

Now the hard part...what do I name the new 5D and lens? To recap:

18-55mm - Tiny Tim
24-105mm - Jacob
70-200mm - Biff
50mm - Optimus
XTi - there is no name!

I can't even begin to describe all the feelings that are going through my brain as I still get used to having a 5D Mark II. The image quality is just astounding, the video quality's fine but definitely needs a tripod. I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at amateur short film. The 16-35mm is an AMAZING LENS. But I admit, I was a little surprised that there is no Image Stabilization technology on the lens since this is the second edition of the lens. I actually thought for a moment that I had the wrong lens. In any case, with a f/2.8 I don't think I should have too much to worry about.

Instead of pretending like I'm so calm and can write cohesive sentences, I'm going to spam you with my initial thoughts and random snippets of conversation.

"HOLY CRAP! Look at the size of that sensor!"

"Hmm...why do these photos look so cool? Oooh there's vignetting...why is th-...wait, I'm using a wide angle on a full frame camera...awww snap!"

"What the?! NO IS?!"

"They'll price match it $2500? PERFECT, I'll take both."

"My goodness...look at the image sharpness...and colour reproduction..."

"TWENTY MEGS FOR ONE RAW?! Oh wait..."

"My gawd it's taking forever to transfer these photos to my computer!"

"Dad...you gotta understand...what you see before you is the BEST camera for non-sports related photography."

Special shoutout to Nanette at Vistek Edmonton for pleading my case and helping me save $. You're an amazing person, thank you so much! :D

Every year, I go to Burma/Myanmar and I only take a carry on and a hand bag. Taking a large camera like the 5DMk2 (even a T2i size camera) with a lens or two is not an option for me since I like to go travel light (especially to Myanmar). I wanted a small camera that could produce great quality images, good bokeh when needed, and good colors; l knew not to prioritize it based on high ISO quality. I'll have to give that up for a small camera.

I bought/sold/tried shooting with several cameras--from small, point and shoot size sensor to micro-four thirds. Among the ones I tried, my favorite was the E-PL1 with Panasonic 20/1.7. I wanted to see if I could find something even SMALLER than the Oly/Panny combo without giving up too much on image quality.

I debated between the Samsung TL500 / EX1 and the Leica Dlux4. I was impressed with the quality of Samsung's images I saw on the web (and also the cheaper price). But, I ended up getting the Dlux4 because it had been around longer (RAW files supported by most software), and knew I could get good quality images out of it.

By the time I got the Dlux4, I was already inflicted with Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)--I wanted another camera of that size that could produce images with even BETTER image quality. Since I couldn't afford a Leica X1, I wanted to try out the Sigma DP2s.

---SIGMA DP2s---

It's "different."

The user interface isn't bad, but not as intuitive as others I have tried. I got used it in a couple of days and I find no issues.

LCD screen is so-so. I can still view images on the LCD under a bright sun--better than E-P2. Image quality could be better, but with low-res screen, it's hard to see whether I've nailed the focus point. I also have the external optical viewfinder. It's small, with nice bright frame lines, but it's not really that accurate. If the camera could auto focus well, it'd be more useful.

The build seems fine. It's similar in size to the DLux4 but a little thicker but lighter. The battery life is average for small cameras (not great but not bad).

Performance-wise, it's a hit or miss. In good light, focus is quick but not instant-quick. In lower light, it takes its time locking focus--I'd say average of about a second or sometimes even two. As a range finder camera user, I don't mind taking a little time to shoot since I'm just looking for a good composition and good image quality. This is perfectly fine for stills but not the best for fast paced kids in action. These days, I shoot mostly my kids but I still find DP2s more than usable. I accept and forgive all the quirkiness of the camera since I know I'll get a few really good shots with it. Maybe it's a personal thing--I prefer it over the Oly E-PL1 because it's a little more "challenging" to use and the reward is much more satisfying.

The software that came with it works amazingly well. In fact, if I try to process the DP2s RAW files in Lightroom, my results won't be as good--or at least, it would take me a lot of time to get it right like SIGMA Pro Photo 4.1 software. Simga Pro Photo processing speed is fast--about 3-4 seconds on my 17" Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM laptop. I can see why many people go goo goo over the FOVEON sensor. The colors are, indeed, rich and the POP of the focused subject is quite similar to what I would get with a Leica Summicron 50/2 lens.

All in all, I'm glad I found the DP2s.

    ccd camera
  • Short for "charge-coupled device." A CCD is a light-sensitive electronic detector widely used in making astronomical images. Sensitive over a wide range of wavelengths, and much more efficient than emulsion in gathering light, CCDs are often used to image extremely faint objects.

  • A charge-coupled device (CCD) is a device for the movement of electrical charge, usually from within the device to an area where the charge can be manipulated, for example conversion into a digital value. This is achieved by "shifting" the signals between stages within the device one at a time.

  • A Charge Coupled Device, or CCD camera, converts light into electrical charges. This type of camera is used often in astrophotography.

    ptz
  • Pan-Tilt-Zoom. Camera functionality.

  • Pan Tilt Zoom - a camera which can be controlled via Joystick or DVR and moved up/down, left/right and zoomed in/out.

  • A housing unit containing a camera (usually video), which can be operated remotely to pan, tilt and zoom.

It is the most commonly used film size, but does not offer the quality of medium or large format, because this small negative must be enlarged quite a bit in the darkroom loosing it's clarity and sharpness.

  • 35 mm film is the basic film gauge most commonly used for chemical still photography (see 135 film) and motion pictures, and remains relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1892 by William Dickson and Thomas Edison, using film stock supplied by George Eastman.

  • The standard film gauge for films intended to be shown in cinemas. Depending on the film stock being used, 35mm film is capable of producing an image of sufficient detail to fill even a large cinema screen.

Kodak Cameo Motor Ex 1996 Olympics Version - 2

Kodak Cameo Motor Ex 1996 Olympics Version - 2

An Ebay purchase during August 2007, this little camera is the companion to the Kodak Cameo 110 and is also known as the Cameo Motor EX. This version was made as the official camera for the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. Both cameras do a good job for what they are and seem to be very dependable. It operates on 2 AAA Alkaline Batteries. In fact, it does such a good job that I decided to add another Cameo Motor Ex (plain version) to the stable.

According to the instruction sheet:

'It features easy film loading with automatic prewind and advance; automatic film-speed sensing (DX/DXN); a focus free glass lens; swing-up KODAK SENSALITE Flash for red-eye reduction; folding viewfinder; and shutter lock if the batteries are very low or the flash needs charging. It also features a large liquid-crystal-display (LCD) panel that shows the frame number, low-battery symbol, flash-charging symbol, and mode indicators for fill flash, self-timer, and mid-roll rewind."

The instructions further state: "Your camera uses any 35 mm color or black-and-white print film with a speed of ISO 100 200 400 or 1000. Film with an ISO less than 100 or non-DX/DXN coded film will not operate in this camera."

Specifications:
Type: Ultra-compact 35mm camera.
lens: 34 mm, f/4.5 or f/5.6 3 element glass lens with protective lens cover/flash.
Viewfinder: 2 element, reverse-Galilean folding viewfinder.
Aperture: Flash: f/5.6; daylight f/11.
Shutter: Programmed electronic shutter. Daylight: 1/80 or 1/140 sec at f/11 or 1/80 sec at f/5.6.
Focus Range: Daylight: 4 ft (1.2m) to infinity.
Flash Recycling Time: Approximately 3 sec with fresh batteries.
Power Source: 2 AAA-size ALKALINE Batteries.
Dimensions: Approximately 5 x 2.6 x 1.3 in. (128 x 67 x 32 mm).
Weight: Approximately 7 oz (200 g) (with film and batteries).

p.s.
As of May 2011 I now have the regular Cameo Motor EX and a manual wind version of this same camera.

Kodak 828 Film and Camera Ad - 1951

Kodak 828 Film and Camera Ad - 1951

Found some old 828 family Kodachromes. Beautiful color even for the plainest of subjects. The format was intended to help wean all of us from that nasty film requiring such extensive waste in production (35mm). Those millions of sprocket holes punched out in 35mm format film were not recycled, just tossed. Kodak saw profits literally go in the garbage. 828 needed fewer holes to transport the film through the camera. Less holes = more money. Kind of the Betamax format of its day. Same outcome as Betamax, people favored 35mm more then and now.

You can get a copy of the camera shown here for a few dollars. Simple plastic build quality, cheapy lens, finicky shutter; but the little suckers have survived by the millions.

And yes, people did do that to little girl's hair back in the day.

Agfa Optima Ia - 1962

Agfa Optima Ia - 1962

Agfa Optima Ia (1962)

The "original" Optima was the first fully automatic camera in the world. There were times when Agfa was no doubt one of the best known camera brands. Only second to Kodak. After manufacturing cameras over a half of the century, production ended in1983.Today both companies, Kodak and Agfa, are continuing in photo-bisnes, producing film, photo papers etc. aiming more for the professional usage. Let?s go digital. you know.

Optima Ia takes 24x36 negatives on 135mm film. It has 2,8/45 Agfa,Color-Agnar lens. Shutter, 1/30-1/250, operates automatically when you press "The Magic Button". When you press the shutter lever halfway down a mechanical system sets the correct aperture value and speed from the electromechanical part of the meter. A red signal dot in a viewfinder turns green when the right aperture/shutter speed combination is achieved. That's the way how "The Magic Eye" indicates if there is light enough to take a picture. The widget weights 400g and the measures are 121x82x68 mm. Quite lot of plastic is used as a material and the body seems to be similar to other variations of Optima cameras. System has no battery. Required energy is produced by a selenium cell. Focusing is manual. The standard model which is built on the same basis is Agfa Silette I
