Dry: A Memoir

Dry: A Memoir

From the bestselling author of Running with Scissors comes Dry—the hilarious, moving, and no less bizarre account of what happened next.

You may not know it, but you've met Augusten Burroughs. You've seen him on the street, in bars, on the subway, at restaurants: a twenty-something guy, nice suit, works in advertising. Regular. Ordinary. But when the ordinary person had to drinks, Augusten was circling the drain by having twelve; when the ordinary person went home at midnight, Augusten never went home at all. Loud, distracting ties, automated wake-up calls, and cologne on the tongue could only hide so much for so long. At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten landed in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey, Jr., are immediately dashed by the grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. But when Augusten is forced to examine himself, something actually starts to click, and that's when he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life—and live it sober. What follows is a memoir that's as moving as it is funny, as heartbreaking as it is real. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a higher power.

Fans of Augusten Burroughs's darkly funny memoir Running with Scissors were left wondering at the end of that book what would become of young Augusten after his squalid and fascinating childhood ended. In Dry, we find that although adult Augusten is doing well professionally, earning a handsome living as an ad writer for a top New York agency, Burroughs's personal life is a disaster. His apartment is a sea of empty Dewar's bottles, he stays out all night boozing, and he dabs cologne on his tongue in an unsuccessful attempt to mask the stench of alcohol on his breath at work. When his employer insists he seek help, Burroughs ships out to Minnesota for detoxification, counseling, and amusingly told anecdotes about the use of stuffed animals in group therapy. But after a month of such treatment, he's back in Manhattan and tenuously sober. And while its one thing to lay off the sauce in rehab, Burroughs learns that it's quite another to resume your former life while avoiding the alcohol that your former life was based around. This quest to remain sober is made dramatically more difficult, and the tale more harrowing, when Burroughs begins an ill-advised romance with a crack addict. Certainly the "recovered alcoholic fighting to stay sober" tale is not new territory for a memoirist. But Burroughs's account transcends cliches: it doesn't adhere to the traditional "temptation narrowly resisted" storyline and it features, in Burroughs himself, a central character that is sympathetic even when he's neither likable nor admirable. But what ultimately makes this memoir such a terrific read is a brilliant and candid sense of humor that manages to stay dry even when recalling events where the author was anything but. --John Moe

With great power 10/7/08 280/366

With great power comes great responsibility. A great quote from Spiderman, IMO.

And it applies here too. With the ability to use poser we have the responsibility to conserve it. We have the responsibility to care for the planet to protect it from global warming and pollution. And what better place to begin than at home. Not to mention the savings you can receive on your electric bill! and if you're looking for an excuse to get that flat screen monitor or LCD tv? Thy save electricity as well compared to CRT models

What can you do?

Air conditioners
Check and clean the air conditioner's filter once a month; make sure the air conditioning unit is the proper size for the room it is cooling; locate the air conditioner on the north or east side of a house in a shady area; ventilate the house's attic to reduce heat buildup; install ceiling fans to improve air circulation.

Dishwashers
Wash only a full load; turn off drying cycle, open door to air dry dishes.

Clothes washers and dryers
Use only with a full load; use warm or cold water, reserving hot water use only for heavily soiled clothes; use only full loads for the dryer and if a second load is necessary, dry that load immediately after the first to retain as much heat as possible; clean lint filter before each load.

Computers
Turn off computers when not in use or set the computer to energy-saving mode.

Lights
Replace incandescent bulbs with screw-in fluorescent bulbs, which use 75 percent less electricity and last at least 8 times longer; turn lights off when not needed; install light dimmers or photoelectric switches that automatically turn off lights during daylight or install timers to control use of lights; for lights used for home security, install motion detectors so lights come on only when motion is detected.
New appliances Replace aging appliances with new, more energy-efficient models when possible; look for Energy Star label designating an energy-efficient appliance.

Ovens and stove tops
Use microwave instead of oven where possible; food in glass dishes can be cooked at lower temperature; preheating oven is usually unnecessary; on the stove top cook with covered pans and match pan size to the size of the burner.

Refrigerators
Check door seals to make sure there are no air leaks; clean condenser coils on the back of the refrigerator; keep refrigerator away from oven or dishwasher and give the unit breathing room; turn thermostat down to 37 degrees Fahrenheit; turn on energy saver switch.

Water heaters
Lower the heater setting to 120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit; insulate the water heater and any exposed hot water pipes; use low-flow shower heads.

"Techy" Noah by Iris H. Zuares

Noah is the youngest of our three
he will always be the baby to me
we were a lot older when he was raised
some thought we were the grandparents we weren't phased

we traveled a lot more before he was born
this kind of left him feeling forlorn
when he heard we visited Disney World he started to pout
then he said he was there looking as he peeked out

Noah is a wonderful child
has a sweet disposition and is gentle and mild
one little trait we came to abhor
was that he's a Gemini and sometimes hard to adore

he had this knack for taking apart things
thinking he could fix them of all their dings
this must have paid off as he's a wiz with computers
glad he got passed collecting frogs and the thrill of riding scooters

always challenging himself to go beyond most others
must be because he has two older brothers
they looked at Noah as quite unique
he got involved in things they never did seek

sports photography, school paper and website design
just a few talents that are mighty fine
along with the work his brothers thought him still spoiled
even with all the things that he toiled

he kept his room a mess and clothes were everywhere
kept buying new things especially underwear
he eventually had to imporove his abilities
doing his own laundry would give him more responsibilities

high school graduation had come in June 2010
after the summer he would become a college freshman
all things went smoothly the move was done well
wanted to hear good things that time could only tell

moved in the dorm everything was set up right
has a microwave, fridge and lots of light
one other thing the school is high tech ,
everywhere you go WIFI will connect

also in the dorm as convenient as can be
is a modern laundry facility
it's free to all a dorm living dweller
included in their board fees it seems quite stellar

this is so good to have it nearby
you get a text when the wash is done and if it is dry
this rather amazed me how easy it has become
i'm sure it's still hard to organize for some

this is the first time these kids are away
most never did much for themselves any day
i wasn't worried about Noah doing the laundry task
assumed all was fine didn't have to ask

then one day it was last week
he chose to share it was time to speak
he said doing the wash is really irritating as can be
i got upset and couldn't imagine what more he would tell me

thinking i would have to hire a laundress for him
just joking it was thought and said on a whim
i asked Noah to explain why it wasn't so fine
he said it's annoying you have to find an empty machine while online

Dry: A Memoir

From the New York Times Bestselling author of Running With Scissors comes the story of one man trying to out-drink his memories, outlast his demons, and outrun his past.

“I was addicted to “Bewitched” as a kid. I worshipped Darren Stevens the First. When he’d come home from work and Samantha would say, ‘Darren, would you like me to fix you a drink?’ He’d always rest his briefcase on the table below the mirror in the foyer, wipe his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief and say, ‘Better make it a double.’” (from Chapter Two)
