Woot! Motivated by a canned good drive at Mark's work, I finally cleaned out the main cupboard area. We have three bags of non perishables to donate!

This would look a lot more bare if Thanksgiving weren't a few days away (especially all that stock). We really need to stock our pantry. On the plus side, I found four cans of tomato sauce I didn't know I had, totaling five!

How they looked when we moved in - flat plywood fronts, a very clean look for the time but a little date now. Instead of knobs or handles there were "touch latches" - push to click open, push to latch closed. We grew to hate them rather quickly. Some of them did still work, not many.

Caardvarks - clean and simple challenge

Before I went on holiday my Hero Arts Clear set "Delicate Blossoms" arrived but I didn't get time to do more than stamp it off onto some white cardstock. So yesterday I got out the watercolour pencils and coloured this in. It is such a beautiful set that lends itself well to CAS cards..... colour and add a sentiment and it is done... DESALINATED WATER IS WORTH MALE' RESIDENTS' MONEY
Faced with the prospect of no freshwater source, the people of Mal, Maldives knew that the solution would come with a price. The question was: are they willing to pay it?

In 1995, Mal residents agreed to pay an average of US$ 5.00 per cubic meter (m3) of water. This high tariff, the highest in Asia, was to be used to support the operation of seawater desalination plants that provide 24-hour access to drinking water. In 2000, the tariff rate even increased to US$ 6.40/ m3 but was later reduced to $5.62 in 2005.

Contrary to common expectations, this did not stop consumers from using the water. From a customer base of 6,500 customers in 1996, using 395,500 m3 of water, the numbers surged to almost 17,000 customers using just under 2 million cubic meter of water in 2005.

The increase in desalinated water use indicates people's confidence in desalinated water than water from traditional water sources: groundwater and rainwater. Beyond that, this indicates that people— without alternative viable options —would be willing to pay for water that they know to be safe, clean and worthy of its price.

FIGHTING WATER SCARCITY WITH THE RIGHT PARTNERS

Water is a very scarce resource in the Maldives. Groundwater and rainwater are the major water resources.

In the period leading to the 90's, the underground aquifer had been irreparably damaged by extensive use and pollution. The result was salty water not fit for human consumption. No regulations and standards were issued on groundwater use, and the build up of saline groundwater is evidence of its misuse.

Rainwater, on the other hand, is not disinfected and very few people boil it. There have been incidents when rainwater was tested positive for bacteria.

Aside from these geophysical limitations, people perceive water as a free good.

The impending water crisis prompted a Joint Venture Agreement between the government and NTR Holding/HOH Water Technology of Denmark, creating the Mal Water and Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd. (MWSC) in 1995.

NTR/HOH, with contributions from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and the Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), took on full responsibility of providing reliable water and sanitation services, including the desalination plant and distribution system for 5 years. This autonomy enabled smooth operations in all work phases and established the business's financial viability among private investors and the local government. The government, in turn, granted NTR/HOH monopoly of all public water supply and sewerage services for a 20-year period.

MAL WATER AND SEWERAGE COMPANY: DESALINATING WATER
The MWSC produces desalinated safe drinking water and distributes it to 100% of the urban population (104,400 people) in the capital island everyday. It has also expanded its operations to nearby islands of Hulhumale and Villingili.

Upon its inception, MWSC established water production facilities and a distribution system to service the whole island of Mal. SeaWater Reverse Osmosis equipment is used in the water desalination plants to produce 3,500 cbm of safe drinking water a day (This has now increased to 7,000 cmb/day). A new water supply network consisting of more than 10,000 piped desalinated water connections distributes fresh water to each customer hooked up to the network by a water meter.

MWSC is also responsible for wastewater systems, to which all households in Mal are now connected. The Maldives Water and Sanitation Authority (MWSA), which was formally responsible for the water and sanitation sector, was converted into a Regulatory Body and performs water regulation functions for MWSC to protect consumer interests and the environment. The Regulatory Body was previously lodged under the Ministry of Health but is now under the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water.

UNDERSTANDING MAL'S SUCCESS
After the public-private partnership between the Mal government and NTR/HOH, all customers had 24/7 access to clean and safe water. MWSC reached break-even point in April 1997 and by June 1999 had recovered all losses from the starting period.

The customer base has also increased --- 16,888 for Male', 381 for Hulhumale, and 852 for Villingili.

The 3-tiered water tariff also provided a lower tariff for subsistence living needs, and rates are higher as consumption increases. The cross subsidy help

NPS Approves Stock Use Plan for Grand Canyon North Rim

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE APPROVES STOCK USE PLAN FOR GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK...

The National Park Service (NPS) approved a stock use plan January 5, 2011, that allows commercial mule rides to continue at historically high levels in Grand Canyon National Park, but limits rides on some inner canyon trails that have been damaged by mule use. Private stock use remains unchanged from current use levels.

“Mule rides have always been an important part of the visitor experience at Grand Canyon,” said Acting Superintendent Palma Wilson. “Our challenge with this plan was to balance that use with the protection of historic trails and to reduce the high cost of maintaining those trails. We believe this plan strikes such a balance.”

The stock use plan was formally adopted by the NPS with the signing of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) by Intermountain Regional Director John Wessels. The plan adopted by the NPS was among five alternatives analyzed in an Environmental Assessment issued by Grand Canyon National Park for public review and comment in May 2010. The purpose of the EA was to examine environmental impacts associated with commercial, private and administrative stock use – guided by the following objectives:

Provide opportunities for mule and stock use within Grand Canyon National Park to as large a cross section of visitors as practicable.
Establish appropriate levels and types of stock use (i.e. number of stock per day, group size) on park trails that will allow for improved maintenance and reduced resource impacts and costs associated with trail maintenance.
Through improved maintenance and operations, reduce conflicts between stock users and hikers on park trails.
Identify optimal stock facility locations, including associated infrastructure size and locations for improving health, safety and overall visitor experience.

With the signing of the FONSI, the NPS has determined that the preferred alternative (“Alternative B” in the EA) will not significantly affect the human environment or the natural and cultural resources of the park, nor will it violate any environmental protection law.

The stock use plan allows a potential 20 percent increase in commercial mule rides over the present yearly average on South Rim trails, and a potential 13 percent increase over the present annual average on North Rim trails. For South Rim operations, which have averaged 8,315 commercial mule rides a year for the past eight years; the new limit is up to 10,000 rides per year. On the North Rim, with an average of 7,072 commercial rides annually now, up to 8,000 commercial rides a year will be allowed.

The stock use plan will help Grand Canyon address the impact of heavy, continuous use and limited trail maintenance funds on the park’s 42 miles of corridor trails – the three main routes into the inner canyon.

To aid repair and improvements, the stock plan decreases rides on the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails and designates an above-the-rim ride. On the Bright Angel Trail rides will be reduced from 40 rides per day (20 rides to Plateau Point and 20 to Phantom Ranch) to 10 rides to Phantom Ranch per day. These 10 rides will return on the South Kaibab Trail, once reconstruction of the trail is complete. The Plateau Point ride will be replaced by the above-the-rim ride, which offers greater flexibility and more opportunities for visitors.

The plan limits trips to Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab Trail to 280 rides per week with a daily maximum not to exceed 48 riders a day, a number that has been exceeded less than a dozen times in recent years. The plan also eliminates the Roaring Springs ride. The Roaring Springs section of the North Kaibab Trail, a steep and narrow stretch that was expensive to maintain, was temporarily closed to mule traffic in 2009. Within one year of the change, trail degradation and associated maintenance costs declined significantly.

The plan will designate a new above-the-rim ride on the South Rim, as stated above, which will replace a temporary rim ride that was added in 2009 to accommodate visitor needs. Extensive work continues today on the 7-mile South Kaibab Trail, which is expected to accommodate mule trips returning to the rim from Phantom Ranch sometime in 2012 or 2013.

Visitors to Grand Canyon have taken guided mule trips since the early 1900s, before the park was officially established in 1919. Today, an average of 15,400 visitors a year ride mules on commercially guided trips down into the canyon and above the rim. The number of private mule and stock use is unknown because day-use permits are not required, but on average, about 60 private riders a year make overnight trips. In addition, the park uses mules for maintenance and supply trips into the canyon.

Yin yang pisces stained glass window

The first stained glass window i ever made. Its a got a bit dirty hanging up there in the bathroom window..... maybe I should've give it a quick clean before i took the photo....ho hum!!!
The design was one i'd originally drawn for a tattoo, but never got!
The centre is the star sign pisces, 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, done in the style of a yin yang sign.

I have used smalti (red), reflective galss for the fisches and water and also not glased tesserae for the background.

So, I will grout with dark material.
The problem was about the not glased material and with dark grouting the colours can change...

vva pickup tomorrow means feverish sorting through things today. (well, and for several days.) we went through christina's clothes, and i went through my clothes, too, although there wasn't much to give away after the great purge of 2006, the great purge of 2007, and the great purge of 2008. i did come up with a few t-shirts that i'm never going to wear again, plus a couple of pairs of pants that somehow survived all three purges despite never fitting me properly.

we filled up more than one black trashbag with books from the living room bookshelves. the three on the far wall don't look very different (although the radiator is totally cleaned off, which is a huge feat), but this is the bookshelf i'm happiest with. an entire black trash bag (plus a grocery store plastic bag) full of stuff -- and there are still books left. these shelves were terribly overstuffed, and now they aren't! that means that i can pull books out of my bedroom and stack them on this shelf, and start shelving my books. fun fun fun!!

Here are the components for another piece. They are 5 inch lengths of 1.25mm steel wire. The steel wire has had the surface rust cleaned off it with steel wool. The wire has had the sharp ends made smooth, using the nifty little tool pictured. You put the end of the wire into the little cup at the end of the tool and move it around and it smooths off any rough ends.

He got signed to Curb in 1997, but his first singles failed to make a dent in the charts. He finally hit number four in 2004 with the song "Honesty" and followed it up with an album by the same name. The album was a modest success, and set the stage for If You're Going Through Hell. Wanting to make an album with a less produced sound, Atkins cut the vocals for If You're Going Through Hell in his small home studio. The song was the album's lead single and shot to number one on the charts; it was also the most played country single on radio in 2006. "If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)" is a big, anthemic song that tips its hat to everybody who's ever had a hard time. Its soaring chorus is as much pop as country, as is the production, which featuring bagpipes, a thumping drumbeat, and a wall of fiddles and banjos. Other hits include "Cleaning This Gun (Come on in Boy)," the tale of an overprotective father trying to intimidate his daughter's first date by showing up on the front porch with his rifle. Atkins sings it first from the perspective of the young man, then as a new father with a young daughter of his own, and strikes the perfect balance between love and aggression. "These Are My People" is a celebration of growing up country. It's a string of clich s, the kind of song that can sink under its own sentimental weight, but Atkins delivers it with a sly humor that makes it believable.

East Tennessee singer-songwriter Rodney Atkins scored a chart-topper with the title track of this second release, reframing the Irish drinking toast ("May you be in heaven five minutes before the devil knows you're dead") in a modern context and tying it all up in a Celtic/banjo wrapping fit for Keith Urban. It's a solid effort, and performed with unusual aplomb for a newcomer. By season 342 in the year 2338, Cambridge-Smythe's new "showtime" direction for Doctor Who had led to a complete absence of tension, fear or peril in many episodes.

One story in particular saw the Doctor and Millicent star in a musical adventure with the Daleks in a largely nonsensical plot that nonetheless bore more than a passing resemblance to the Rodgers and Hammerstein story “The Sound of Music”.

The episode saw the Doctor and Millicent arrive in Salzburg, Austria, where they became embroiled in the lives of the von Trapp family who were being hounded by a squad of Daleks. The Dalek task force had, in turn, been sent back in time and disguised themselves as Nuns in order to persuade the family to come and sing for them on their home planet of Skaro.

Although suffering heavily from Venusian flu, the Doctor was able to discover that the Daleks’ evil plan was to stage a concert in the distant future featuring thousands of kidnapped musical acts from throughout time.

This once-in-a-lifetime “ultimate concert” was to be broadcast simultaneously by hyper-wave to every planet in the known universe, and whilst everyone was distractedly viewing their telemonitors in excitement, the Daleks would then stage an invasion and conquer all of space in an instant and without resistance.

Featuring such classic tunes as “So Long, Farewell, Exterminate”, “Hover Over Ev’ry Mountain” and “How do you exterminate a problem like Maria?”, many viewers wondered how the BBC were able to get away with such blatant plagiarism. However this was easily achieved by changing several of the lyrics to the songs, such as the opening lines of “Do-Re-Mi”:

“Dough - some cash, a lot of cash
Ray- a beam from a gun”

And so on…

The song “Edelweiss” was also altered significantly and renamed simply and inevitably to “Exterminate”:

“Exterminate, exterminate
Ev'ry morning they flee me
Small and white
Clean and bright
Humans don’t look happy to meet me

Explosions grow
Ash falls like snow
Bodies pile up forever
Exterminate, exterminate
Bless the Dalek race forever”

The episode concluded with the Doctor inadvertently assisting the von Trapps as they fled to Switzerland by infecting the Dalek squad with his Venusian flu and causing many of the mutant creatures to explode inside their casings.

Alas, the Daleks’ final plan was merely delayed, not thwarted by the Doctor, who had gone back to bed, and several thousand years in the future, the universe fell to Dalek oppression amidst the nasal tones of Bob Dylan.

Caught mid blink and wearing an overall of a style associated with the motor trade in the 1980s. Cleaning Ladies have a ready eye for such bargains.

Um, gross--finals. French and chemistry. I am studying all day. Except for the part where I went to target and stuff and bought some beauty stuff. I got brown eyeliner and an eyelash curler etc...twas cool.
Everyone's getting real optimistic about getting the house, cleaning and everything. I am too, but trying not to get my hopes up..

In addition to the ferry terminal, Ringaskiddy has a deep water port.

Cork City is located slightly upstream on the River Lee on the northwest corner of Cork Harbour. Several of the city's suburbs, including Blackrock, Mahon, Douglas, Passage West and Rochestown lie on Lough Mahon or the Douglas Estuary, both of which are parts of Upper Cork Harbour.
The Lower Harbour has many towns around its shores. Passage West, Monkstown, Ringaskiddy and the smaller village of Raffeen are found on the western shore. On the southwestern shore is Crosshaven. Great Island, which forms the northern shore of the lower harbour, houses the town of Cobh. The eastern shore is less densely populated, but has two villages Whitegate and Aghada, both home to power plants..
The village of Ballinacurra is found on the northeastern spur of the harbour, known as the Ballynacorra River. Due to the recent expansion of the town of Midleton, Ballinacurra has effectively become a suburb of Midleton, so it could also be said that Midleton lies on Cork Harbour.

Cork Harbour is one of the most important industrial areas in Ireland. While many older industries such as shipbuilding at Verolme Dockyards, steel-making on Haulbowline Island and fertiliser manufacturing at NET (Nitrigen Eireann Teoranta) have declined or ceased in recent years, they have been replaced with newer industries and Cork Harbour is now significant at a worldwide level within the pharmaceutical industry. Major international firms such as Pfizer, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline and Janssen Pharmaceutica (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) are significant employers in the region. There are in excess of 100 other pharmaceutical firms operating in the Cork Harbour area. The principal of the pharmaceutical industry are Little Island and Ringaskiddy.

Austin Night View

I worked harder on this final piece than anything I've ever done.
I have been scouting for a good location to get a clean view of Downtown Austin for a few years. The problem is that these views are only available from some of the most expensive property in Austin.
So this week I drove around trying to find a little sliver with this view I could sneek onto and snap a few quickies. I couldn't find a spot that I thought I wouldn't get arrested for setting up on. After deciding to call it a day I saw the home that had the perfect unobstructed view of downtown Austin right over the Colorado river. What the heck. I figured I'd ask. Worst thing they could do is ask me to leave right? So I knocked the door found on the house at the end of the long driveway behind the big security gate that was left open for me. The first guy that answered was really nice but he kept saying "Nah, man. I don't think so...." even though I kept explaining how this was a really great opportunity for him to have his city view captured before a huge earthquake wiped it out or a monstrous Hurricane, or a terrible flood! I was just about to pull out my Swiss Army pocket knife and up the negotiations when brother #2 rounded the corner and said, "What's this all about?" I told him I wanted to take a picture in his back yard. He took about 1/2 a second and said, "Yeah. Sure. Come on in!" Just goes to show you that persistence pays off. You just got to find the right brother.
Come to find out this house had just recently been bought with plans to level it and build a bigger, better house. The guy who bought it has his 3 sons living in it for the time being and after a little negotiation (1 case of Shiner Bock) they agreed to let me hang out and take some shots, which I did last night. Very Very cool guys. They had some friends over to watch the Dallas Mavericks take the trash out against the Heatles. I ended up having a really cool convo with one of the guys, Paul, who was a dead ringer for Jude Law and could speak at length on God, the universe, the relative nature of time and the hard to define but definitely noticeable nature of people who live in South Austin. And along the way I may have drank a few of those Shiners, which made this an even better deal. It's like offering $50 bucks and then taking $20 while your there. How sweet is that?

Anyway - I promised not to mention their names and the location - so I will only say Huge Thanks to the fella's and good luck with the up coming In-House Paintball game.

I have had 4 hard drives kill themselves in my possession (a Western Digital Caviar, two Western Digital MyBooks and one Seagate FreeAgent) which as we all well recall resulted in the loss of a lot of photos and all of the music I ripped. The two Western Digital MyBooks went down at once to kill all possibility of redundancy. Anyway, I have moved onto the Drobo, let's see how it goes.

I will happily take wagers on when I will lose all of my data.

When Hutch awoke he at first wondered if he was drunk. He didn't remember getting drunk but couldn't understand why he was sleeping on the floor and there was a bottle of wine laying across from him. As he got up he felt the pain in his neck and recalled how he had been attacked. For a moment he thought he had once again made an extremely bad choice in bed mates but then he saw that Juliana was still in bed, laying across the sheets in the nude.
Caressing his neck as he walked, he asked “Juliana, Juliana are you alright?” She was unresponsive, when he pulled on her shoulder she limply rolled over. Hutch recoiled at first then moved in closer to inspect the horror laying in his arms. Juliana stared up at him with a golden eye.
Hutch took her pulse to be sure, but the tear of blood from the eye socket made it clear that she was dead. A quick check of the room showed there to be no other occupants. Hutch twisted the ring on his index finger three times then made a decision.
He looked at the face of young Juliana Magdalena, frozen in terror. One normal gray pupil and one eye made of solid gold. Hutch tapped on the golden eye to confirm that what he saw was real. Next he gripped it between his index finger and his thumb and in one swift motion pulled it out. He had never seen an instrument like the blood stained one he held in his hand. It was a small, narrow dagger made of solid gold. The hilt had a shape of an eye so that if it were stabbed through someone's eye and pushed all the way in it would leave the appearance that the person had an eye made of gold. Hutch found no bruises Juliana, no skin under her fingernails or other signs of a struggle. So whoever had killed her had either been quiet enough to do it while she slept or quick and accurate enough to make the fatal blow on a small target in a single strike.
The golden dagger was wiped clean on the sheets, then placed in Hutch's bag. He then took the sheets and wrapped Juliana's corpse in them. Hotels could be good places for spies since everybody was a stranger, one more stranger was seldom noticed. The other side was that there were no schedules, no routines, you didn't know when anybody would be coming or going. Hutch wanted to hide the body but to get it out of the hotel unnoticed would be next to impossible. So he took the body and placed it under the bed. It was a dreadful excuse for a hiding place but it might help the remains to go unnoticed for a bit longer.
Hutch went over the the mirror to get a look at his neck. The mark where his skull met his neck was one unlike he had ever seen on his own body but it was instantly recognizable. The maroon mark, too red to be a normal bruise, could have only been caused by a weapon made of dragon shark skin.
Dragon sharks were for centuries thought to be the stuff of sailor stories. They were the size of great whites but with longer tails. Their eyes could rotate around like an iguana's. They were said to be able to spit boiling water and to feed on mermaids, both unlikely claims (Dissections have never found any method by which they could boil water inside them and mermaids were believed to be too fast to be caught.) Dragon sharks had maroon scales that could be tough and flexible, but with a shake could become stiff and impenetrable. Generals would armor their entire armies with dragon shark skin if they could. But dragon sharks were rare and beyond the means of fighting men. Whoever had attacked Hutch and Juliana had some choice weapons.
Going though Juliana's things he found a bottle of perfume. Hutch emptied it on the floor by the door and windows. He then gathered his things and went down to the front desk. A smiling young man, face scared by pox, behind the front desk greeted him. “Ah Mr.” he glanced down at the register “...Dan Mobjes, checking out then sir?”
Hutch tried not to wince at the pseudonym. “No actually, I'm going to be extending my stay for another week.”
“There is a lot to see in Sardis, isn't there sir.”
“Quite. And while I'm here I don't want anyone disturbing my room. No maids or anyone.”
“As you wish sir. Is there anything else I can help you with?”
“Yes, I want my horse saddled and brought up front. Right away.” With that Hutch tossed the boy a silver coin. The boy ran off to attend to prepare the horse. The hotel probably wouldn't leave his room undisturbed for an entire week once they realized that he wasn't coming back, but it would buy him some time. Hutch grabbed a few rolls from a next door bakery, by the time he came back Scorupco was ready to go. He mounted her and began a trot out of town. Once out of sight he kicked Scorupco into going a quicker pace.

See album description - On the surface, one might see this tin can as a nod off to nostalgia. After all who makes tin cans for their bacon bits anymore? When did they stop doing that? And when in the world did Oscar Mayer even make bacon bits? While the canister is old, that is not the story behind this canister.

I once lived in my Grandmother’s house after she passed away. I was still trying to get back on my feet from my retched divorce, it was a means for me to have a place on my own, and it allowed my family to delay dealing with the personal possessions of my grandmother. For five years I sat in her memories while my family refused to deal with them…

I found this canister one day when I was cleaning out her things. It was in a period of my life that was very scary for me to say the very least. I was going through so many things that I wouldn’t know where to begin with them. I was being taken back to court for past due Child Support from my ex. I had every single intention of paying it, but my business was slowly dying and so I had gotten behind. I had a new bride who was a Canadian Citizen and could not work until paperwork was submitted. I was the only income, which happened to be $500 a month to cover food, electricity, gas, insurance, rent, etc. I basically had nothing except stacking bills and a lot of fear for the future.

I wanted to make sure that my new bride had something to eat in the house, so there were several days that I went without eating (she didn’t know this until later on down the road!). On top of everything else I was going through counseling. I was an emotional, physical, and financial mess.

When I found this canister I thought I struck it rich. Inside was several dollars worth of coins from Bicentennial quarters up to Silver Dollars. But could I really trade those in? These were after all my grandmother and grandfather’s collection, and as much as I didn’t want to trade them in I knew I had to survive. I told myself that I would never dip into these unless it was an absolute emergency. I carried this canister in my truck for a few years- in the console, ready to save the day. Every time I almost had to use the coins, intuition and creativity kicked in and I found a different solution. Necessity is the mother of invention and resolution.

I am proud that I made it through those days. I am proud that I never once had to use any of these coins. It was close some days- between gas, food and lawyers. But I made it through. Now, money is not so tight even in a bad economy… and every time I see this canister I am reminded again of all I went through, how I held onto my determination and never gave up!

First Flat Tyre, Birdsville Track

Here is a lesson in how not to use an exhaust jack. The exhaust jack
is a strong plastic cylinder-shaped bag that is inflated with the
exhaust. It lifts a car up. A one way valve stops it deflating while
you are changing the tyre, or digging out a bogged car. The jacks
have a big "footprint" and are useful on soft or very uneven ground.

I had not used one before - but I had read the instructions. I
unpacked it, got the spare ready, chocked the tyres as recommended and
loosened the wheel nuts. I put the jack under the rear diff housing
least likely to puncture the bag. I started the engine and put the
jack's hose funnel on the exhaust. Pressure built up. I was not
holding the funnel on the exhaust and when I was checking the bag's
progress the funnel blew off the exhaust pipe. A huge cloud of diesel
soot blasted me in the face and settled all over the ground as if I
had just cleaned out a chimney.

Next problem was that the jack was not inflating vertically. It was
kinked in the side, and moving away from the flat tyre. The Landrover
started to raise and twist a little, shifting the chocks. I tried to
reach the bag's valve to let the Landrover back down. It was squashed
because of the bag's angle and I could not reach it without crawling
under the car - which I was not going to do. The flat tyre was still
not raised high enough to change. I ended getting out the normal jack
which unfortunately was in the centre of the second spare tyre, right
in the middle of the gear in the back of the Landrover. However, once
I had it, in two minutes with no sweat, the car jacked straight up and
I had changed the tyre. The exhaust jack was still a problem. After
failing to untwist the valve by prodding at it with the normal-jack's
handle. I ended up driving forward slightly, which rolled the bag on
its side. Now I could reach the valve and deflate (more diesel soot)
the bag.

Caught in the act!

Those of you that have been on a photoshoot with me will know that I like to "tidy up" a scene after composing the image. This may take the form of removing rubbish, grass stalks, old sticks and even re-arranging elements in the image, in this case rocks. I was alone in this deserted valley, my car was the only one in the car park so i set up the camera and tripod and was busily moving rocks around when two walkers passed by. They looked at me disdainfully without saying a word, not even replying to my "Good afternoon"! rude pair, or perhaps they thought I'd escaped from somewhere!

Any way, this bit of rough ground is actually the footpath down the centre of Trevellas Coombe, a route which takes you down the valley to the sea at Trevellas Coombe.

Since my shack is even more worthy of that name, I am now staying
at a friend's home. We share supplies like water, food and a
kerosene heater. We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight,
share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful.
During the day we help each other clean up the mess in our
homes. People sit in their cars, looking at news on their
navigation screens, or line up to get drinking water when a source
is open. If someone has water running in their home, they put out
sign so people can come to fill up their jugs and buckets.
Utterly amazingly where I am there has been no looting, no
pushing in lines. People leave their front door open, as it is
safer when an earthquake strikes. People keep saying, "Oh, this is
how it used to be in the old days when everyone helped one another."
Quakes keep coming. Last night they struck about every 15
minutes. Sirens are constant and helicopters pass overhead often.
We got water for a few hours in our homes last night, and now it is
for half a day. Electricity came on this afternoon. Gas has not yet
come on. But all of this is by area. Some people have these things,
others do not.
No one has washed for several days. We feel grubby, but there
are so much more important concerns than that for us now. I love
this peeling away of non-essentials. Living fully on the level of
instinct, of intuition, of caring, of what is needed for survival,
not just of me, but of the entire group.
There are strange parallel universes happening. Houses a
mess in some places, yet then a house with futons or laundry out
drying in the sun. People lining up for water and food, and yet a
few people out walking their dogs. All happening at the same time.
Other unexpected touches of beauty are first, the silence
at night. No cars. No one out on the streets. And the heavens at
night are scattered with stars. I usually can see about two, but
now the whole sky is filled. The mountains are solid and
with the crisp air we can see them silhouetted against the sky
magnificently.
And the Japanese themselves are so wonderful. I come back
to my shack to check on it each day, now to send this e-mail since
the electricity is on, and I find food and water left in my
entrance way. I have no idea from whom, but it is there. Old men in
green hats go from door to door checking to see if everyone is OK.
People talk to complete strangers asking if they need
help. I see no signs of fear. Resignation, yes, but fear or
panic, no.
They tell us we can expect aftershocks, and even other
major quakes, for another month or more. And we are getting
constant tremors, rolls, shaking, rumbling. I am blessed in that I
live in a part of the village that is a bit elevated, a bit more solid
than other parts. So, so far this area is better off than others.
Last night my friend's husband came in from the
country, bringing food and water. Blessed again.
Somehow at this time I realize from direct experience that
there is indeed an enormous Cosmic evolutionary step that is
occurring all over the world right at this moment. And somehow as I
experience the events happening now in Japan, I can feel my heart
opening very wide. My brother asked me if I felt so small because
of all that is happening. I don't. Rather, I feel as part of
something happening that much larger than myself. This wave of
birthing (worldwide) is hard, and yet magnificent.

Now that the clone has once again mastered vacuuming, Sarah can move onto more important activities... specifically, model/action figure paint organization.

I wonder how long it will be before Sarah trusts the clone enough to let her play with the modeling supplies. I was granted such permission after only four years of training and a fully bonded insurance policy. But then... I'm a FAST learner. It might take longer for the clone.

Louise Hand Laundry

Margaret Nicodemus started the Louise Hand Laundry in 1912, according to historical records. In the early years, she probably took in laundry at her house: She was a widow, and the laundry business was one of the few entry-level economic opportunities available to women at the time. The business thrived, and in 1918 the building was purpose-built in a neighborhood that was then populated by Washington's well-to-do.

In 1943, Nicodemus sold the business to Beulah Hall, a Nebraska native who had been selling life insurance. Hall turned it into the laundry of choice for Washington's elite. Although the neighborhood declined through the 1950s and was largely abandoned after the 1968 riots, the Louise Hand Laundry workers maintained their reputation for fastidiousness. Laboring in long, open rooms and beginning each day with prayer, the women used only pure soap and handled silk and lace with the utmost care.

Four White House administrations -- Roosevelt through Kennedy -- entrusted their linens to the laundry, and the Smithsonian sent its 17th- and 18th-century costumes there to be cleaned. Unlike the era's garden-variety laundries, the Louise Hand Laundry didn't offer pickup, and neighbors remember watching limousines pull up to the building to drop off clothes.

But the increasing popularity of dry cleaning took its toll. When Beulah Hall retired in 1977, no one stepped up to buy the business.

The building was another story. By the late 1970s, a wave of what were then known as young urban pioneers began moving into the Logan Circle area and renovating the neighborhood's stately but run-down homes.

Architect Robert Lewis and artist Sanford Shapiro were part of that back-to-the-city movement. They bought the building in the late '70s and remodeled it, turning the two floors into separate units and adding glass block and fireplaces, but keeping the open, airy feeling.

Lewis and Shapiro were known for wild parties they threw in the building's big rooms. "Oh, yes, we used to compete for the party circuit," said real estate agent Stephen Mowbray, who moved to the neighborhood in 1970. "We all had enormous spaces because it was affordable. Back then, nobody else wanted to live here, but they all wanted to party here."

Robert Lewis died in 1992, and the building passed through other owners before Chris Geier bought it in 2001. By then, Logan Circle was a re-established neighborhood, and Geier renovated the building to suit the times, closing off the sunken mirrored bedroom and remodeling the building's upper level.

This is a view of the sundry box's interior. As you can see, I made a matching vinyl panel for the inside of the box. I did this so that the box had a sturdier base. I also wanted to make sure leakage from his stored items (should there be any) would not immediately drip onto the hardwood floor or his wicker nightstand. The base panel is not secured and is easily removed for cleaning; it can also be propped upright in the box and placed against the front panel (i.e., in case he wishes to "hide" the box's contents;).

The Background Story:
I decided I wanted to make something special for my Schatzi’s birthday—it was the first time I could celebrate his birthday with him. The gift “needed” to be something crafty yet “masculine” in appearance, and something slightly metaphorical in meaning. After looking around his very barren (excuse me: minimalist) apartment, I decided to focus upon replacing a little bedside sundries container he’d had for (too many) years. Until my gift, he was keeping a bunch of items in an old Cafe du Monde coffee can. (Ah, bachelors!:)

Being German, my boyfriend is very blatant and very much a “straight shooter;” I would never ask him if I looked “too fat” in something, for fear of hearing the “real” answer (rather than the auto-response that women often seem to try and program into our male mates). At first I found his candid nature a bit shocking, but now I find it completely refreshing and freeing: I always know where he stands.

I wanted to pay tribute to this honesty by trying to create something as transparent as possible.

Thus, I challenged myself: create a transparent, sleek/functional container that looked masculine enough for him to keep on display, even if company visited.

After several brainstorms, I decided to make him a storage box that I would knit with clear, monofilament (i.e., plastic-like) fishing line or “wire.” I figured that a stockingette stitch in this medium would prove quite sturdy yet a bit “giving,” should he overstuff the box.

These pictures show the final product. I am quite proud of its organic appearance and the way I used materials. (I was not an art major in college!:) Be warned, though: I would NEVER recommend this project to someone—working with monofilament wire was very hard on my hands. I’d even venture to say that it caused me more pain (and forced me to take more breaks) than when I knit or crochet with thin metal craft wire.

Life of a Fish Woman

The women who clean fish are all named Rose
or Grace. They wake up close to the water,
damp and dreamy beneath white sheets,
thinking of white beaches.

It is always humid where they work.
Under plastic aprons, their breasts
foam and bubble. They wear old clothes
because the smell will never go.

On the floor, chlorine.
On the window, dry streams left by gulls.
When tourists come to watch them
