The building was demolished in December 1995...to make way for flower beds...a major loss of an item of social significance. Its highly prominent location at a major intersection (and carved out of urban parkland) signalled at the time of construction the importance the authorities in Bendigo afforded the issue of neo-natal and post-natal care. It's demolition shows the lack of appreciation of the importance of maintaining sites related to social heritage issues.

In the spring of 2005 I had the privilege of working with a program called Christian Appalachia Project. A group of college students got together and repaired houses that were in desperate need. The house where my team worked had a small family cemetery at the top of hill. I went to pay my respects and say a little prayer, but I wasn't prepared to see so many tombstones like this one. My Favorite Sunblock

My mom is having trouble finding this stuff in Washington State, so I'm posting this photo to help her locate it.

It is the least greasy, strongest, longest-lasting sunblock I've been able to find. For ages I was a devotee of the Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer, but it is over double the cost of this Hawaiian Tropic Baby Faces and remarkably? The Baby Faces feels less heavy.

In fact, I only have one criticism: it smells strongly of baby powder. I even wrote a letter to Hawaiian Tropic begging them to make a fragrance-free version (I got a form letter back, of course).

Still, Hal and I both are addicted to this stuff, we wig out if we have to use something else. We have bottles in our cars and several at home to try and ensure this doesn't happen.

Also: I am showing two here because I've seen both colors in the store and they are the same. BUT listen up: they make a non-spray bottle of 60spf and IT IS NOT THE SAME. The 60spf is greasy.

47 years ago today Sylvia Plath died.

Ever since studying her at school for A-levels I have been besotted.

I bought her journals years ago and whenever I am low I dip into her thoughts. I love how brutally, unashamedly honest she was and how comprehensively every feeling and thought was described.

When Sylvia Plath wrote her journals did she have any idea, any inkling, any secret hope that one day they would be published? So beautifully and fully written, they are apparently unabridged, but surely (and I like to hope) she would have written those things that we all put in our diaries, the dreary stuff, only of interest to you, the stuff you write at the top of the pages so that when you want to look back to find out when you last had your dodgy tum tum or that immensely heavy period you can flick through like a flick book, “ah ha, my face erupted with pimples on the 19th of May 2009."

My grandmother and my mother have both been prolific diary keepers. My grandmother’s diaries were minute, like ration books, 2cm allocated to each day, she had to ration her words. The same amount of space was given over to her going to the butchers and buying pork chops as somebody close to her dying. It was almost an early form of twitter; 140 characters or less.

My mother tells me that when she looks back through her old diaries they are all virtually identical; she has experienced the same year over and over again for about 15 years, she needn’t even keep writing, she can just put an asterisk and say “see same day in 2009, or 2008, or 2007”.

I don’t always know how to write in my diary, am I writing it for me, to read again in years to come or am I secretly hoping that one day it will be read by others? In self indulgent moments I imagine it being pored over by historians eager to glean the meaning from every last genius sentence, English teachers will hold back tears of wonderment at the use of language as they read aloud to the class, “S**t day got f**k all done, everyone is a complete c**t.”

“Sir Sir, I think that perhaps she is weary of the futility of her efforts to progress in life, she is swollen with frustration that at every turn she is thwarted by bad luck and bad judgement about people and situations, I think fundamentally she is massively f***ed off with it all and wants everyone to f**k off.”

“Excellent Jones, excellent.”

I waste so much space writing entirely banal things, “Got up, felt s**t” - that’s a given, so is: stayed home, early bed, back to bed, nap in afternoon, couldn’t get out of bed, drank wine, I only like bed, got pissed, lie in.
Unfortunately my unfettered diary thoughts are, in addition to being hugely repetitive horrifically swear word ridden. I imagine that re-reading the text in 20 years won’t really give me a very clear recollection of events and merely how f***ing p***ing well ANGRY I was about something, everything.

From Sylvia Plath’s Journals I can pull infinite beautiful, meaningful paragraphs, here are but a sprinkling:

‘I am jealous of those who think more deeply, who write better, who draw better, who ski better, who look better, who live better, who love better than I. I think I am worthwhile just because I have optical nerves and can try to put down what they perceive. What a fool!’

‘Some sleep is like a pile of garbage, with egg shells jagged, and vermin swarming over lurid orange peels, coffee grounds and sick wan lettuce leaves; that is the sleep of nightmare fragments, when the operation or the exam is coming the next day. Some sleep is bleak and gray, sparing with its calm and soothing treatment; that is the sleep of the worker, when each day is like the last and the next, and all time is present. But there are sleeps that are born of spring and of the slumbering hibernation of bears in leaf-hushed caves.’

Saw man shit on grass next to us!

I drink every night, that can’t be good.

We had a row and he said I was selfish blah blah, I told him F**K you.

Ran up stagg hill 6 times.

Found myself wanting a baby today, a newborn in a house (that I was photographing) made such sweet contented sounds, I fancied staying at home talking baby talk all day in slouchy clothes with lullabies playing in the background – only problem, no man, not having sex, no lovely home, ah well.

Was so glad to get rid of her; bought her case to Cockfosters and sent her straight back to Derby.

Title: An hour before operation ‘moving’ got under way to the new St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in May 1954, a baby boy was born to Mrs. J. C. (Norma) Baldwin, 62 Balaclava Street, who was rushed into the new hospital an hour earlier. Dr. E. L. Brown had the honor of delivering the first baby in the new hospital. Mrs. Baldwin was all smiles when she told The Times-Journal she had no idea she would have the first baby in the new hospital. She said she will have to consult her husband, Jack, a driver for Hepburn Transport, before the baby is named.

Our Baby

Ultrasound image of our baby. He or she is just less than 2 inches
long. We found 2 legs and 2 arms, the spinal chord, brain and the
beginnings of the internal organs. We also watched the heart beat and
blood flowing to and from the heart. The ultrasound is pretty
amazing. I'll post a video tomorrow. View the image large and you can pick out a lot of stuff from the image including the umbilical chord and the placenta.

The baby was moving around while we were watching. It almost made me cry to see it. The tech needed the baby to turn over for one of the measurements so he tilted Andrea's feet in the air and had her cough a few times. Like magic, the baby rolled over. Totally awesome.

Chickies! EEEK!

I woke up at 10:30 this morning to let Baby Baa out of the barn to graze and play... I had such a late night last night, I snuggled back down with the dogs. The phone rang at 11 am... It was Barbara, my neighbor. I haven't mentioned this but I've turned her to the "darkside"... Chickens. She's wanted them for months and finally got her partner to half-way approve.

Anyway, the local feed store had in a batch of chicks! She asked if I'd come along and well, I was in my pajamas, needed a shower and just not ready to go somewhere. But I agreed anyway... Though I did go into a panic when she said she'd be here in 10 minutes. Oi, Needless to say, I left looking a little scary. When she arrived, she had an ice cold coke in the truck for me which was much welcomed and needed. I need the caffiene!

I told myself on the way, only 2 chicks, if that... and only if it was breeds I was interested in.

Wellll, I've been wanting a Rhode Island Red and they had a bin full! But then I saw the White Cochins, and oh my God, they were SO cute.

At this point, Barbara is sitting in the floor cooing and talking to the chicks... It amused me highly. She would ask "Do you want me to be your mama, baby?!" to every chick she picked up and apparently, some said no, because she put down a few. I was holding in some major laughter. Keep in mind, she was dead set on Australorps and White Leghorns ONLY plus an Australorp Rooster. That went out the window when she saw these littles. They did have Leghorns but no Australorps.

Actually, they had a fair selection. Dominiques, Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, White Cochins, White Leghorns, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Golden Phoenix (only 2 left) and Buff Silkies (only 2 left). They'd sold out of the Ameracaunas but that was fine by me as I have plenty of those.

I talked to a lady about guineas while I contemplated what I wanted. However, I declined her offer for 2 guinea poults. I picked out my Rhode Island carefully. No markings on the back, just solid red and really friendly. Then a White Cochin. The Silver Laced looked so exotic, I decided to get one of those. Then I noticed one of the Silkie babies was being bullied by the others... Som she went into our box as well. I used GREAT self disipline and made myself put down the other silkie plus the Buff Orpington and White Leghorn I kept eyeing.

By this time, Barbara's plan of keeping just 2 breeds is out the window. She has 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Dominiques, the last 2 Golden Phoenix, 2 White Leghorns and out of all the roosters, she picked a Silver Laced Roo. Funny because she was deadset on not raising "mutt" chickens down the road so her rooster needed to "match" at least one of her hens... he doesn't. I had picked him up and oohed over him but I said "I don't need roos, though..." and she said "Well, if you don't want him, I do!" and that was that.

When we got to the counter, Barbara insisted upon paying for mine which was a surprise and so very nice of her. She also got us an organic strawberries and cream popsicle a piece which was super yummy.

I was really surprised at how much fun we had... We had a blast picking our babies and talking.

Once I got home and showed off my babies, Mimi decided instead of a Blue Orp Trio or Ameracauna Trio she had been wanting for the fenced in area behind her house, she really liked the looks of my Silver Lace so back we went. And well, I felt bad for leaving the single silkie bantam alone. We got there just in time as there was only one Silver Lace Roo left. However, the silkie baby was gone already. Duna tossed in a White Leghorn for me and another Buff Orpington since I love Wilma so much.

Mimi was thrilled with her 3.

By this time, it's 3:30 pm... I went over to see if Bub had her's settled in once we were home. She was loving on them when I drove up, kissing them and had one asleep in her hand.

While I was over, Duna called and let me know he had bought hay. I went with and loaded the 10 bales which was pretty hard work.

Needless to say, I'm exhausted... but it has been an awesome, fun-filled, great day!

Crazy-eye killah

OK....this dog is such a nut. His owner told me his family was going to San Francisco for three days and leaving him home alone. Another neighbor was scheduled to drop in on him in the morning and feed him and he just asked me if I'd keep tabs on his water since it was going to be triple digit temps. Of course, I did more than that...besides the walks, I brought him to my house where he could play with Spot. Unfortunately, I have terrible grass and it's filled with those stickers....which stuck to him ALL over. I was trying to get them off his face, but he kept playfully nipping at my wrists and arms. Sometimes he's cute...sometimes.
This weekend was too much though... He broke his collar while he was under my watch and ran away from me to go say hi to another dog. He's friendly with other dogs...it's just that he can't let one go by without making a big scene and barking...not ALL dogs want to say Hi to him after they see how he's acting, know what I mean? His cheap snap closure collar began getting bigger and bigger until I couldn't hold on to him anymore and he slipped away. Luckily, the dog he ran to is one I'm familiar with and friendly.
We ran into some people walking a Pitbull not too long ago. When they turned the corner, they yelled at us to "watch our dogs" because they had a Pit. They walked off the sidewalk and kept their dog far away from us, but Barkey could have broken free from me then, and that would have been a horrible, tragic thing. He pulled so hard my hands bruised. Long story short....he's starting to turn into a liability for me and I'm realizing that he's not that easy to walk....not around my neighborhood where there's plenty of mean dogs for him to lunge at.
I took Spots collar off and put it on Barkey in order to get him home. Spot walked with Barkeys broke ass collar...hanging off of him and I just hoped we didn't see any cats. Even Spot can be difficult if he really thinks there's a possibility he could get a cat. We saw two, and I'm proud to say that my baby looked at that cat, stopped for a second and kept walking, and with plenty of slack on the leash. He's such a good boy my baby... This crazy one... He's getting harder to control, what's up with that?

Six Months!

Exactly six months after the birth of our baby boy we found ourselves at The Farm in Snohomish, WA, accompanied by Grandma, and the tail end of baby's first cold.

Each moment seems like it brings another new thing he couldn't or didn't do the moment before. The subtle way he changes, becomes more capable, while remaining the sweet boy we know, continually amazes us and we are captivated by it.

His first cold was hard on us, but really we are happy that he seems so hearty and maintains a happy disposition regardless of his health. We know it could have been much worse and it will be much worse. Just a speed bump. The hardest part is knowing that this will become the status quo around here, fighting off colds, late nights, snotty babies, and exhaustion all around.

By the time we arrived at The Farm, he was doing much better; though, snotty and coughing a little. He had a really nice time spending a warm, fall day with us and his Grandma. We went on a hay ride and we all selected a pumpkin.

Later that evening Little Alvin had his first taste of "solid" food in the form of rice cereal. I have pics, obv.

It's been an off day for Owen. Not sure why. He slept on me the moment I got home, which isn't like his usual routine, and when he woke up to eat, he couldn't decide if he was happy or upset. By this time there were tears, so we had to pack it up and start his bottle. Usually after this feeding he'd be falling asleep, but he decided to wake up. And then eat another ounce. And then go to bed. I'm kind of worried he'll be waking up any second.

Although Peter Lang never achieved the public recognition of Takoma Records labelmates Leo Kottke and John Fahey, his fingerstyle guitar playing has long been an inspiration to other guitarists. 1. Google News has been my treasured homepage for years. It samples the news from thousands of worldwide sources, offering you a hearty variety of biases, incorrect reporting and outright lies. Oh, and a smidgen of truth and objective journalism sprinkled in there every now and again.

2. Bulletin board, photos. I've considered putting more useful things like bills and reminders on my bulletin board, but I like to look at pretty things. Pretty usually beats out rational every time. Featured here: a postcard I bought in Florence, Italy; a photo of me and my cousin Gabriella when she was a baby; a spooning photo of me and my two best man friends, Pat and Justin; my old college roommate (and SK little sister) Gina's save the date announcement for her nuptials this summer.

Day Five

Here's one for the ladies...as Brandi is occasionally topless in my stream (in the pregnancy photos) I figured it's high time for me to be as well. Also I'm cooking, and topless, and watching the baby. Where's that link to mommy porn?

Oh the goggles? Yeah that's my prevention of onion crying device. They make me look awesome. Brandi only had to work a half day today so after a lot of crying and a couple naps she got home. Nana came over (my mother) to visit after her month off wherein she went on a cruise from Florida back home to Vancouver. She picked up her key and cuddled with the baby for whom was all smiles.

Shortly thereafter we went to Kadoya again (which reminds me I should amend my menu to read that they're open again) and yummed up the sushi. Storytime followed (which I'm sure there will be pictures on the family stream) and on the way home I guiltily bought more hummus and pita, Brandi claims it's only because I wanted some...she's probably right.

More naps were had by all members of the family before I started dinner just before we started to raid in WOW. Isobel went to sleep in her crib without too much fussing and Brandi and I both won stuff...hurray!

One of the definitive, landmark shows of the 1990s, 90210 quickly became an important fixture on the FOX and in the popular discourse of adolescents and young adults. The second season’s main characters, Dylan, Kelly, Donna, Steve, David, Andrea and twins Brandon and Brenda all attended West Beverly Hills High School. Brandon and Brenda Walsh and their parents, transplants from Minneapolis were the stable nuclear family with strong values; their home was a safe haven for the whole gang and the center of much of the drama. The show dealt with a steady stream of love triangles and other romantic entanglements and occasionally touched on more serious issues as well.

From a pregnancy scare and a psycho girlfriend to a cameo by Color Me Badd, Beverly Hills 90210's sophomore year demonstrates why this was "the greatest TV show in history with a zip code in its title." That's what comedians John Aboud and Michael Colton (Best Week Ever) call it in a very entertaining bonus feature that affectionately roasts 90210 from its so-the-drama melodramatics to its stuck-in-the-'90s fashion sense (high-waisted jeans, buttoned-up shirts, and whatever the heck you call the outrageous wardrobe worn by Brian Austin Green's David). This is the season that catapulted 90210 from Most Likely to Succeed to BSOF (Best Show on Fox). Certainly, it was must-see viewing for teens who anxiously tuned in each week to vicariously chart the serial adventures of siblings Brenda (Shannon Doherty) and older brother Brandon (Jason Priestley), recent transplants from Minnesota to glitzy Beverly Hills. Season 2, one of the best in this series' decade-long run, is one for the time capsule, with episodes and story arcs that loom large in the 90210 phenomenon, among them: Brenda's tempestuous, on-and-off-again relationship with soulful bad boy Dylan (Luke Perry in his instantly iconic role), causing rifts between her and her increasingly disapproving parents; new girl Emily Valentine (Christine Elise) going all Fatal Attraction on Brandon (no rabbits are boiled but a homecoming float is in jeopardy); Kelly (Jennie Garthhooking up with Melrose Place-bound Jake (Grant Show), and Donna (Tori Spelling) in her mermaid Halloween costume.
Degrassi Jr. High has nothing on 90210 when it comes to issues-oriented episodes. Not four minutes into the season opener, Brenda announces she is five days "late." "I love Dylan, and I thought I knew what we were doing" she tells BFFs Kelly and Donna, "but I'm beginning to get the feeling that it wasn't worth it." Other episodes address abstinence, child abuse, the physically challenged, sexual orientation, racism, rape, and steroids. A heartbreaking story arc concerns David shunning his former best friend, Scott, who returns from an Oklahoma vacation all urban cowboy, making him even more of an outcast with the popular kids. "Cool it with the guns," David cautions, foreshadowing tragic events to come in the episode "The Next 50 Years." Throwing something of a wet blanket on precious memories of the show is the substitution of songs for 90210's originally killer soundtracks of alternative and classic rock and golden oldies. 47/365: A Day Away from Home

Today was crazy! I managed to do a ton of things away from home with only a hint of anxiety or panic.

This morning, Jesse and I went to Winn Dixie for diapers and got Jeremy a valentine's present. We got him a Hershey's bar bouquet and some flowers, and a card. I would have gotten Jesse one of the huge stuffed animals if I'd had the money but I didn't and he didn't seem interested anyway. LOL

When we got home we all went to the Game Stop and traded several games. Jeremy got a new (older and used) game that he wanted and he got me Gran Turismo 5! That was my "valentine." Maybe I'll still get a card or some flowers...or a skinnier herringbone silver chain for my diamonds. Hint hint? Haha!

After that, we had lunch and then Jesse and I went to his Godfather's, and our wonderful friend JR's, house. We finally got his Christmas tree down for him and played outside for a while. Jesse walked around all over the yard and played with his Flintstone's car. He hardly fell at all and when he did, even on the concrete, he always caught himself amazingly and never cried or got scared or hurt - he'd just pop back up and go for it again.

When we left, even against my better judgement (because of my anxiety) we brought a load of stuff with us. The headboard for our bed hung over the tail gate, which really freaked me out, but we got home safely and without incident with that, the mirror for our dresser, a beautiful painting and Jesse's indoor/outdoor play yard (a huge octagonal baby gate contraption).

After we got home, my Daddy stopped over and played with Jesse. He watched Jesse act crazy in the tub and we had great laughs. Then we fed Jesse together and my Daddy put Jesse to bed (with the exception of my changing Jesse's diaper). After Jesse was asleep, I managed to put the king size headboard on the bed by myself, after the misadventure of the lost nut, and now here I am - dog tired but so happy and more excited about life than I have been in almost two years, which is when my anxiety started to really take hold of me - about the middle of my pregnancy with Jesse.

I had an amazing day with all my favorite people in the world (except my Mom but I did talk to her on the phone), and I am so proud of myself for taking another step towards the life I want to have for and with my precious and deserving little boy.

I included the angel statuette blowing a kiss, strategically placed to blow on Jesse, in the collage because I pushed my limits today for him (and Jeremy!) and angels helped me along. People who spoke to me, smiled at me, a guy at a store who flirted with me and made me feel nice about myself...all that was what helped me to be less afraid and find a little more confidence. Also, the extra Klonopin I took this morning helped. But mostly it was the angels around me.

Day 110 - Kisses blown are kisses wasted. Kisses aren't kisses unless they are tasted. Kisses spread germs and germs are hated. So kiss me baby; I'm vaccinated.

Today was a good day. I had history class first period, and no math... Although I did have health... Well, oh well. It gave me lunch with DV ^^
We kinda played... footsie? Haha. I dunno. Well anyway. We talked at the lunch table with our friends and then once we had to go back to class, we walked out together and he gave me a really nice hug. I like his hugs.
So after those last two periods, I walked around school with my ex and best friend, waiting for him to text me, and when he did, he told me to meet him outside of the cafeteria. I did and we sat in there, just talking about random things. I stole his hat ^^ But then we walked around and to his locker before we went outside to start walking where we needed to. He had to walk to work, and I had to walk home.
Once we had to part ways, he gave me another really good hug and uh... Yeah... Kissed me... Twice... >.< And I just have to say... He's a really good kisser :D
I know he doesn't want a relationship (and I'm okay with that now), but still. I like him. We're supposed to hang out soon.

Where a lot of artists might overthink such a momentous return to the spotlight, though, he displays an astrologically correct tendency to let his instincts guide him, and the result is a disc that sounds both tight stitched and effortless. The song cycle follows a beguiling pattern: when Jones isn't seducing somebody, a la the shamelessly sexed-up "Apple Pie," "Can't Wait," or "Ooh Na Na," he's emptying his heart into a dusky ballad like "Portrait of a Woman." Or else he's just reminding the world that he can crank out a hit and have a near-criminally good time doing it. While "Better Start Talking" gets backing from Jermaine Dupri and the other standout selections here boast top-tier production talent--Tim & Bob hook him up on "I'm Gonna Be" and Ryan Leslie lubes up the Bun B number "If You Want" till it's perfectly squeakless--Jones commands a distinctive kind of cool throughout. Sterling Silver and Copper Free Form Design, J100928

These earrings are created from a design in my sketch book. I sawed the sterling silver free form profile from sheet, then stamped it with my initials and the 925 quality mark. A dapping block was used to form the convex shape. The copper piece was then balled using a torch and forged to make the eye. The copper was then forged to a gradually tapering shape, annealed and finished with a goldsmiths hammer to add texture. The copper was then formed into the curved shape and adjusted to fit behind and through the sterling silver piece. The whole assembly is held together with a soldered jump ring at the top. The piece was then cleaned, liver of sulfur patina applied, and then brushed with a rotary tool and steel brush to give it a satin finish. Micro-crystaline wax was applied to preserve the finish. The hand made earwire was added to complete the piece. The whole earring hangs at about 2", and is about 1/2" wide at the widest point.
