Looking at the Seals on Kinshaldy Beach Kinshaldy is one of Fife's many wonderful (and ginormous) beaches and has the added attraction of hosting 150-200 beautiful seals (the dark line two thirds of the way down in this photo is wall-to-wall seals). To reach it, you have to drive for a couple of miles through the Leuchars countryside, then park-up and walk along the golden sands for another couple of miles to reach the seals.Gentoo has reminded me that even further down the beach, even beyond the seals you can occasionally find a small colony of nude-bathers (However, April is too early in the year for Homo nudiformensis as they might risk hypothermia or frost-bite without their winter pelts). Somethin' Nasty in the Milk Shed The milk shed is going to serve as my shop. It's about 15' square on the outside, a bit less on the inside due to the thickness of the cement block walls. The previous owners dug a small trench & ran a line from one empty circuit on the house circuit breaker to here. I can't run more than about 1000 watts at once. Before refigeration was common, milk sheds were how you kept the milk cold. Older ones are essentially big shallow indoor bathtubs. There'd be a pump on one end of the building sitting in or near a depression in the floor where you would put the milk cans and there'd be a drain on the far end of the depression away from the pump. You'd fill the tub with water and keep the pump going so the water would circulate around the milk cans & drain slowly, keeping the milk cold. Often the milk house is a small attachment on the main barn as this one was. The south wall you see here with the doors didn't exist when it was built. When the barn was torn down, they left the milk house standing and built the fourth wall. So because it has electricity for lights and is somewhat secure and visible from the house, by default it becomes the shop. The barn would have had more room, but it has seen better days, has no electricity (which is probably a good thing considering the condition it's in) and is not weather or critter proof. Lyttelton Tugs 1859-1907 Top Left: Mullogh 1855 Top Right (2): Titan 1866 Bottom (3): Lyttelton 1878 Getting a sailing ship into Lyttelton Harbour in the early days was often an unpredictable business. Waiting for a favourable wind could often mean tacking off the Heads for days on end. Although the history of the restored and widely known fourth Lyttelton tug is well recorded, the stories of her predecessors have not previously been documented. The Mullogh In 1859 Dalgety, Buckley and Company, local agents for the Shaw, Savill Shipping Company, purchased the four year-old Belfast built steamer Mullogh in order to tow passenger vessels up to the anchorage in the vicinity of the Government Jetty and Peacock's Wharf. With a crew of five, a length of 60 feet and a Beam of 15 feet, the Ketch rigged iron steamer was propelled by a 15 nominal horse power, single horizontal cylinder steam engine and could carry a cargo of 60 tons. The single screw steam ship, whose bones now lie on Lyttelton's Quail Island, served in a variety of roles, often carrying the early immigrant's heavy luggage and kitset houses up the Heathcote to Woolston or to The Bricks wharf on the Avon (where the Barbadoes Street bridge now stands). Among her more notable cargoes was New Zealand's first railway locomotive and the statue of John Robert Godley that now adorns Christchurch's Cathedral Square. Ownership of the Mullogh eventually passed to the brothers John and Peter Cameron, coastal traders with a wide variety of business interests on Lyttelton's Norwich Quay and also at Diamond Harbour, where they had built a 140 foot wharf. The Cameron's continued with the Mullogh in the tug service, expanding their fleet with the acquisition of the Paddle Tug Titan in 1876. The Titan As Yard No 157, the Titan had been launched from the Clydeholm Shipyard at Whiteinch on the River Clyde in November, 1866 by Barclay Curle and Company as a speculation for James Cowan of Leith. The 97 ton vessel was immediately sailed out to Melbourne, Australia, where she was sold by auction on the 22nd of July 1867 to John & David Spence, who used the 95 foot, 6 inch steamer to tow large sailing vessels from the Port Philip Heads to Williamstown and Sandridge. Also fitted with passenger accommodation, the clinker-built iron paddle steamer was propelled by a pair of horizontal steam engines, with single 28 inch diameter cylinders and a 50 inch length of piston shaft. Developing 55 nominal horse-power she was quite capable of being worked up to 150 horse-power. Beyond the 35 foot engine room was a dry-bottomed boiler containing 160 horizontal iron tubes. A working pressure of 25 pounds per square inch drove 14 foot 9 inch diameter paddle wheels, which were 6 feet 8 inches wide. This enabled the vessel to maintain a speed of 10 knots for up to six days from the 23 tons of coal in her bunkers. In 1873 the Titan was purchased for ?7,600 by the Westland Steam Tug and Freight Company of Hokitika. Her shallow Draft of 4 feet 6 inches made the vessel ideal for working the notorious Bars of the West Coast ports and Captain Hugh B. Macmeikan charged 2 shillings and 6 pence per registered ton to tow vessels in and out of Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika. However, business wasn't that good and less than three years later she was seized by the Mortgagor and sold by Tender to Lyttelton's Cameron Brothers by the Bank of New South Wales. Under the successive commands of Captains Peter and J. S. Cameron the Titan towed sailing vessels in and out of Lyttelton Harbour from 1876. Two years later the Cameron's tugs were in competition with the Harbour Board's new and larger vessel. Although offered for sale, along with the Mullogh, by private tender in September, 1878, no buyer was found for the Titan and she continued in the Lyttelton service until 1882, when she was purchased the Timaru Harbour Board for ?3,500. In the command of Captain Clarkson the paddle tug was still towing ships in and out of Timaru in 1889, but her annual survey in that year indicated that although her engines were in good order, the boiler and hull were likely to require a major overhaul. By about 1893 she had been converted to a coal hulk and in 1895 the Titan was sold to the Bluff Harbour Board. Abandoned at the head of Bluff Harbour about 1901, her bones may still be visible on the beach. The Lyttelton Established in 1877, one of the Lyttelton Harbour Board's first significant undertakings was to order a tug at a cost of ?9,000 from the Laird Brothers of North Birkenhead (opposite Liverpool on the River Mersey). Delivered at London in July, 1878 and rigged as a Brigantine, the Lyttelton arrived, under sail, at Cooktown, in the far north of Queensland for provisions four months later. Who Knows? I thought this an interesting photo when I arrived to the end of the race. God alone knows what the mannequin stands for - although I think I may have heard that the mannequin is dressed with tokens of Hash races past. Isn't she lovely? The end of the race was, well how should I put it, bizarre? The Hash House Harriers are truly a drinking club and the end activities are centered around drinking beer - as much as possible. They pass out run violations for which the violatee has to stand in the center of a chalk drawn body part I shan't mention here and listen to his/her violations, then listen to a raunchy pub style drinking song shouted at them off-key, and drink a "beverage of his/her choice in the vessel of his/her choice" on cue. But that wasn't the only after race activity. We also got to witness two people get new names. You see, after 5 races you get a new name under which you can drink copious amounts of beer and be totally anonymous - uh huh. At the start of the race we met people with such names as - and some are unmentionable - Saigon Sally - for a guy (who I thought was a really nice guy) who likes Asian women and spent time in Vietnam, then there was an Abercrombies _itch - don't remember why he's got that name but can guess (also another really nice guy) - White Shoes - who is my upstairs neighbor - Thong Way - for a woman who only wears thong underwear - Cuban Beef - for a Cuban guy... The naming ceremony consists of the victim standing in the center of the group and undergoing questioning about their personal life, after which they are asked to leave with a few beverages of their choice and come back only when called. When the person to be named leaves, the group goes around and throws out two or three lined words related to information disclosed during the questioning. Of course they brought Diaz Martin and I up for being newcomers and they gave us three token questions that they give all the "virgins" or "newbys." The questions being, "What is your name? Who brought you? And why are you here?" The answer to the last question is supposed to have a pre-programmed answer which is "to drink beer" of course. So there were a lot of pub style raunchy songs being thrown about, a naming session or two, violations, eating of snacks, and let's not forget, God forbid we should - drinking of beer. Being involved in a Hash House Harriers race was like being a part of some kind of fraternity - or spiritual community with out the spiritual part. After the race everyone gets together at what they call an "On After" which is essentially picking a place that has food and alcohol and going to eat and drink there. I decided I was going for the whole Hash House Harrier shabang experience so we came home and showered after the race and headed over to a place called Lupi's in Isla Verde which is where everyone was meeting. I had a good time there but I spent a good deal of that time in conversation with a pilot from American Airlines and his co-pilot who had nothing to do with the Hash House Harriers (HHH). Basically I wanted to take their table since they were paying to leave and pilot Steve from Chicago and I started up a conversation. I grilled him on plane crashes and conspiracy theories first and we ended up talking spirituality by the end - much to the dismay of the co-pilot who was over it and ready to go. And much to the dismay of the HHH I later found out. Apparently it wasn't cool for us to be fraternizing with non-Hash members. (This coming from Diaz Martin who said he witnessed what he thought was HHH members discussing my infraction). Can I just say - WHATEVER FREAKS! No. Like I said, that was heresay. Don't know if they really cared. But if they did, WHATEVER FREAKS! Diaz Martin has made it pretty clear that he won't be doing another Hash House Harrier race because of the fraternity element. It's not for him. And as for me, I don't know, probably not, especially if it's a no-no to talk to strangers. I've been a part of a community with social control issues and it's not for me anymore. I really like the adventure part of the group to be sure, but to be honest I didn't feel overly welcomed, especially by my alleged critics. There's no doubt that there are some very nice and interesting people in the Puerto Rico Hash House Harriers group. And if you are a single woman in Puerto Rico, there are definitely some men to be had if you can stomach the drinking, raunchy jokes, dry humor, and testoterone pumping through the group and its rituals. It is also a good way to meet Americans if you are in a foreign culture. And although I believe the group was originally started by a Singaporean, I get the feeling Americans with jobs that force them to travel for a living often join HHH to meet other Americans - or to meet other people just like them who like to drink beer, sing r Laying here... I'm in bed watching The Simpsons and sipping on ice water. I can't stop coughing and its 5 am. I really want to go to sleep. Ate today for the first time in 5 days (other than popsicles, water, & soup) at a mexican restaurant with Mei & Rob. I got a cheese enchilada w/ beans & rice. It was actually perfect and it felt so nice to have food in my tummy. When we got back we watched "An American Haunting" which was totally not what I expected but was interesting nonetheless. I didn't have a chance to update about yesterday since it was a miserable hellish day, so I wanted to make sure & let everyone know what happened. I didn't sleep well at all on sat night and kept waking up having problems breathing and panicking because it hurt to swallow. When I finally woke up I didn't feel good at all. I barely made it out of bed to take my medication because my head was throbbing and I felt nauseous. I stayed in bed almost all day and tried to sleep. At one point I slept for about an hour and it felt great. My temperature was gone but I still had chills and couldn't stay comfortable. I decided to call John to let him know I was nauseous and needed to know what to do if I threw up again. He told me to take my antibiotic so I did. I went right back to bed for fear of throwing up but felt sick to my stomach. I managed to keep it down for awhile and take a nap. When I woke up I called John again. I was having problems breathing and the mucous was getting so thick it wouldn't come out. I was in extreme pain and really scared. He told me to call 911 because I couldn't even stand up but I told him to come here instead. As soon as he got here he packed my bag for the hospital and helped me to the bathroom because I needed to clear my throat. As soon as I got in there I started coughing hard, coughed up blood, then started dry heaving. A few minutes later I started throwing up just blood. He helped me out to the car and we raced to the hospital. As soon as we got there they got me right into an ER room and checked my blood pressure & pulse. It was 144/96 and p=120. Totally abnormal for me by the way. The doctor came into see me and said it could be mono. I didn't think it was but I had to do tests still. They hooked me to an IV and pumped me full of 3 liters of saline (that's A LOT), 2.5 bags of pain meds, 1 of antibiotics, and a shot of steroids for the swelling. My throat was almost completely closed and I was so dehydrated I couldn't function. After a few hours of waiting for all the fluids to enter my bod I was able to have a smoothie. It was the first thing that even resembled a meal that I had eaten & held down in days. I left the ER around 9:30 last night once they gave me take home steroids/nausea meds and I was able to walk again. I came home and showered and made soup. Last night my bed felt so soft and amazing. After going through all that, I can't even tell you how happy I was to be alive. So so scary! ~? Alesha via ?? SX10-IMG 3908 Antares Point, AZ—AUG 12, 2011 • Route 66 • Can't find Antares Point on the map? Neither can I but that is the location given by one of the several failed businesses at this location. What used to be the Kozy Corner Trailer Park is located at the corner of Route 66 and Antares Road, 22 miles northeast of Kingman on the way to Peach Springs. I found several pictures on the net that were taken in 1973. There was a large sign on the roof advertising 'Lake Mead Rancheros', the building itself housed a cafe, bar, and a Shell gas station. The pole sign said 'Ranchero Motel'; there was another sign for a land office hawking 40 acre ranchos, excellent terms. Two small dome buildings were nearby, they are gone now. 'Lake Mead Rancheros' itself was behind this building (some reports say 6 miles) in the trackless desert, a developer's dream, a buyer's nightmare. There were no roads nor utilities, just desert. More recently the roof of the A-frame was covered with thatch of the type seen in South Pacific islands and the Tiki head appeared. It all seems to be abandoned now. 2˝ of the sides of the first forms up Still waiting to hear if the concrete people can make it down the driveway with a full truck. If they can, we'll do two pours, one for the footers and one for the pad. If they cant, we'll have to hire a pump trailer to run the concrete down the 268 feet from the road above. This would also mean that we'll have to do a monolithic pour which is the less preferred way for us. Less forms to build, but big pain since we need to put down 2" of extruded polystyrene and 2 more inches of gravel down under the pad but not the footers.
