Invicta Men's 8926OB Pro Diver Collection Coin-Edge Automatic Watch

Invicta Men's 8926OB Pro Diver Collection Coin-Edge Automatic Watch

Classic styling and high performance add up to an outstanding sport watch for your land or sea adventures. This automatic watch, from Invicta's Pro Diver series, places a large round stainless steel case on a robust triple link steel bracelet. The black dial is designed for quick and easy read-off, even in low light conditions. It offers three-hand function with Tritnite-coated luminous hands and hour markers and a magnified date display at the three o'clock mark. The dial is capped with a resilient mineral crystal and framed by a black unidirectional rotating steel bezel with coin edge detailing. This watch is driven by Japanese automatic movement, which is visible through the see-through skeleton caseback. It is rated water resistant to a full 660 feet (200 meters).
Automatic Watches

Automatic watches do not operate on batteries. Automatic watches are made up of about 130 or more parts that work together to tell time. Automatic movements mark the passage of time by a series of gear mechanisms, and are wound by the movement of your wrist as you wear it. The gear train then transmits the power to the escapement, which distributes the impulses, turning the balance wheel. The balance wheel is the time regulating organ of a mechanical watch, which vibrates on a spiral hairspring. Lengthening or shortening the balance spring makes the balance wheel go faster or slower to advance or retard the watch. The travel of the balance wheel from one extreme to the other and back again is called oscillation. Lastly, automatic movements come in different types, including movements that are Swiss-made, Japanese-made, and more.

Also referred to as self-winding, watches with automatic movements utilize kinetic energy, the swinging of your arm, to provide energy to an oscillating rotor to keep the watch ticking. They're considered more satisfying to watch collectors (horologists) because of the engineering artistry that goes into the hundreds of parts that make up the movement. If you do not wear an automatic watch consistently (for about 8 to 12 hours a day), you can keep the watch powered with a watch winder (a great gift for collectors).

Screw Down Crowns: Many Invicta watches are equipped with a screw down crown to help prevent water infiltration. This is most common on our Diver models. In order to adjust the date and/or time on such a watch, you must first unscrew the crown before you can gently pull it out to its first or second click stop position. To do this, simply rotate the crown counterclockwise until it springs open. When you have finished setting the watch, the crown must then be pushed in and screwed back in tightly. Not doing so will cancel the water resistance of the watch and will void all warranties from the manufacturer. Overall, this process should not require a lot of effort or force.
Pro Diver Collection
Plunge into any horizon using the steadfast guidance of the Invicta Pro Diver. Stylishly classic, internal workings are forged with variations of either Swiss chronograph or 21-jewel automatic movements and willingly navigate in depths up to 300 meters. Built with confident prowess, the fortitude with which these timepieces function makes the Pro Diver the quintessential in performance.

Through a Broken Window

Through a Broken Window

So I was walking through an alley off of Sprague Avenue and there was this abandoned house with boarded up windows. There were, however, windows at a higher level that weren't blocked. One was broken, and was about seven feet high, so I stuck my camera through without knowing what I would photograph...

Interestingly, I had my camera set on automatic, but this is the only shot it would take. Either the autofocus was having trouble fixing on something in the low light, or something didn't want another picture taken ; )

Polaroid Land 250 Automatic - first successful shot

By no means an interesting shot, but it works! The connection between the battery and the shutter wasn't working for a while, but a bit of poking around fixed it.

Now to the fun of playing with the elegantly cumbersome camera and the development process. Polaroids are marvels of technology.

73 / 365: Blinding

This was one of my sister's two photographic presents to me (yes, I know: I'm officially a geek, with my presents being dominated by photographic toys and sensible clothing) - a remote flash trigger! It means I can light my subject from somewhere other than the top of the camera, using the flash unit I blagged from my Dad.

No prizes for guessing my major influence in this shot - I even toyed with the idea of doing a garden shot with the patch of blue sky we had at lunchtime today... In any case, what he never lets on is that a flash in your eyes can be quite blinding, especially if you have to do it more than once, and even though it looks quite dim when you reduce the aperture...

Ow, my eyes hurt. Really.

Duplex entryway. Built in the summer of '41 by Southern Pacific to accommodate employees during Eugene stopovers, and the units also served as company housing. Now a rental.

All it lacks is a Zenith or Philco console radio.

Interesting to note that in 1941 there was still the need to distinguish the entry in some way, even though this alcove is only a vestige. The walls are also lath and plaster, a craft that was soon to disappear.

Yotsuba and the Bunny Girls

Yotsuba and the Bunny Girls

Yotsuba loves to sing. This evening she asked the Caramel Bunny Girls to join her –Yotsuba likes the idea of a backing group and those bunnies are so sweet! They sang songs and danced together, and really had a lovely time. I think the poor bunnies got a little hot under the lights, as I saw them perspiring, but that didn’t stop them. Finally Yotsuba went to bed, no doubt to dream about performing in front of thousands! Haven’t seen the bunnies since- em! don’t know where they disappeared to! ;)

Some of you may think using Chocolate Bunnies for B a bit of a cheat, of course, as the bunnies are not really toys, although as a child I was always being told not to play with my food. Although I am backed up by Wikpedia which states, ‘goods... produced for other purposes can also be used as toys’.

Where's Waldo?

Where's Waldo?

Barack Obama's Inauguration.

The Mall: Washington, D.C. 20th January 2009.

~ Today marks a very important day in the history of the United States of America.
Today, a man of mixed parentage, black and white, was inaugurated as the 44th
president of the US. Although his mother was an American, his father was an
immigrant, who came to the US to study, a Black African and also a Muslim.

One may say that these facts may not, rather should not, have any bearing on why he be allowed to fight a national presidential election. Yet all these facts do carry much reason to rejoice. Obama stated in the opening speech of the 2004 Democratic convention, that he was 'grateful of the history of my heritage,' that he held much importance to his familial background. His wife, Michelle, is a descendent of slaves, meaning that her family exists in the United States simply because they were brought to the country as slaves, and who were forced to exist without an identity.

As a Black man, he has fought and won the most important job of public service in a country, possibly the world, that only granted full enfranchisement (full voting rights) a little less than 60 years' ago. The political writer and activist, Andrew Sullivan, rightly said it is 'the arc of 300 years of difference', of why this moment in world history is so important. Who could have guessed that a Black man could become the presidential of a country such as the United States of America?!

I would like to remember those who lived, suffered, fought, campaigned, took offence, stood strong against, refused to accept the status quo, died or were killed, that brought this truly awesome, remarkable to fruition! Only yesterday, the US marked Dr Martin Luther King Day, an annual holiday that honours the life, strle and sad murder of the Civil Rights leader, and which ushered in a phenominal event. There are also the nameless masses. Not to be forgotten. Indeed, the inauguration was held in the arena of Washington monuments that symbolise the freedoms for which the country fought against imperial power, buildings erected, brick by brick, with the blood, sweat and tears of slaves.

President Obama will be watched very carefully, and willed to succeed by countless masses to bring in much needed change for the general good. President Barack Hussein Obama, Allah aap ka muhafiz rahe.

As the forty-fourth president, Barack Obama offered his inaugural address, already being dissected by political pundits, who state Obama spoke 2401 words on the first day of his posting as president:

'My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and co-operation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal

Lost in a book

Lost in a book

Last week I made the mistake of driving to the library. I ended up having to pay $9 for parking and then got caught in some nasty traffic. So today, I decided to take the subway. I brought my camera and decided to get a shot of the subway as it came rushing in through the tunnel. I snapped a couple of quick shots with a high ISO setting of 2000 at aperture 4.0, just to get an idea of framing and what lens to choose before setting up the tripod. Once I was satisfied with the test shots, I broke out the tripod and set it pretty close to the ledge. Just before I could get a shot off with a lower ISO and shutter speed, I was scolded by security and kicked out of the station. They don't like tripods apparently. Long story short...I had to settle with using one of my test shots at a high ISO setting, so the result is grainier than I'd like. But rather than go back and risk a fine, I decided to work with it as is.

Allosaurus skull, displayed in The National Dinosaur Museum, Canberra, Australia. From the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry , USA.

From Wikipedia:

"Allosaurus is a genus of large theropod dinosaur that lived 155 to 145 million years ago, during the late Jurassic period (Kimmeridgian to Tithonian). The name Allosaurus means "different lizard" and is derived from the Greek ?????/allos ("different, other") and ??????/sauros ("lizard"). The first remains that can definitely be ascribed to this genus were described in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh. As one of the first well-known theropod dinosaurs, it has long attracted attention outside of paleontological circles, and has been a top feature in several films and documentaries.

Allosaurus was a large bipedal predator with a large skull, equipped with dozens of large, sharp teeth. It averaged 8.5 meters (28 ft) in length, though fragmentary remains sest it could have reached over 12 meters (39 ft). Relative to the large and powerful hindlimbs, its three-fingered forelimbs were small, and the body was balanced by a long, heavy tail. It is classified as an allosaurid, a type of carnosaurian theropod dinosaur.
The bulk of Allosaurus remains have come from North America's Morrison Formation, with material also known from Portugal and possibly Tanzania. It was known for over half of the 20th century as Antrodemus, but study of the copious remains from the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry brought the name Allosaurus back to prominence, and established it as one of the best-known dinosaurs.

As the most abundant large predator in the Morrison Formation, Allosaurus was at the top of the food chain, probably preying on contemporaneous large herbivorous dinosaurs and perhaps even other predators (e.g. Ceratosaurus). Potential prey included ornithopods, stegosaurids, and sauropods. Some paleontologists interpret Allosaurus as having had cooperative social behavior, and hunting in packs, while others believe individuals may have been aggressive toward each other, and that congregations of this genus are the result of lone individuals feeding on the same carcasses. It may have attacked large prey by ambush, using its upper jaw like a hatchet.

The skull and teeth of Allosaurus were modestly proportioned for a theropod of its size. Paleontologist Gregory S. Paul gives a length of 845 millimeters (33.3 in) for a skull belonging to an individual he estimates at 7.9 meters long (26 ft).
Each premaxilla (the bones that formed the tip of the snout), held five teeth with D-shaped cross-sections, and each maxilla (the main tooth-bearing bones in the upper jaw) had between fourteen and seventeen teeth; the number of teeth does not exactly correspond to the size of the bone. Each dentary (the tooth-bearing bone of the lower jaw) had between fourteen and seventeen teeth, with an average count of sixteen. The teeth became shorter, more narrow, and more curved toward the back of the skull. All of the teeth had saw-like edges. They were shed easily, and were replaced continually, making them common fossils.

The skull had a pair of horns above and in front of the eyes. These horns were composed of extensions of the lacrimal bones, and varied in shape and size. There were also lower paired ridges running along the top edges of the nasal bones that led into the horns. The horns were probably covered in a keratin sheath and may have had a variety of functions, including acting as sunshades for the eye, being used for display, and being used in combat against other members of the same species (although they were fragile). There was a ridge along the back of the skull roof for muscle attachment, as is also seen in tyrannosaurids.

Inside the lacrimal bones were depressions that may have held glands, such as salt glands. Within the maxillae were sinuses that were better developed than those of more basal theropods such as Ceratosaurus and Marshosaurus; they may have been related to the sense of smell, perhaps holding something like Jacobson's organ. The roof of the braincase was thin, perhaps to improve thermoregulation for the brain. The skull and lower jaws had joints that permitted motion within these units. In the lower jaws, the bones of the front and back halves loosely articulated, permitting the jaws to bow outward and increasing the animal's gape. The braincase and frontals may also have had a joint."

Pillboxes at Tilty, Essex

Pillboxes at Tilty, Essex

Tilty is a small hamlet north west of Great Dunmow, Essex. It has a parish church and the remains of a medieval abbey. It also has two World War Two pillboxes - one of which is a rare surviving camouflaged pillbox - it was built inside a barn. The other is in the corner of a field on the approach road from Broxted.

The one near the road is in poor condition with its bricks extensively spalled and broken by frost. Amazingly the pillbox inside the barn is in MINT condition. Its brickwork looks so fresh it could have been built yesterday. The barn pillbox is adjacent to the derelict Tilty watermill and can be found by following the footpath from the church car park. Unlike many pillboxes its entrance has not been sealed. When I looked inside it contained a brass bedend! [see above]

***

The British countryside is still dotted with hundreds of brick or concrete structures called pillboxes. While traditionally associated with WW2 and the dark days of the 1940/1941 invasion threat, some actually date from the First World War and were re-activated and restored for the Second World War.

In his book 'Pillboxes' newspaper photographer Henry Wills relates that the first British pillboxes were built along the East Coast in the First World War after fears that the Germans could stage a sneak invasion across the North Sea and land around 100,000 troops on the coast at a selected point.

As pillboxes had already been encountered in Flanders [built by the Germans] the British were sufficiently impressed to build circular ones in Norfolk and Suffolk and the more familiar hexagonal ones along the Thames and Medway estuaries. Some faced inland to protect ports from inland attack. It was the circular version which inspired the name 'pillbox'

Following the Fall of France in 1940, General Sir Edmund Ironside was put in charge of home defence. Visiting King's Lynn and Cromer he noted the considerable effort made to place barbed wire there but said there was a great failure to realise that nodal points should be fitted with blockhouses to prevent enemy columns from rushing inland. In his diary he noted: "It is stupid to repair roads, trim hedges and grass, when pillboxes are needed".

He set in train a major construction programme using civilian contractors.

Initial plans were for a 'crust' of coastal pillboxes to cover beaches and impede landings, followed by inland road blocks at defiles manned by the Home Guard and finally extended defence lines running across country for miles to try to contain a German penetration. The GHQ Line was just such an inland creation although it was never as extensive as the Maginot Line or Siegfried Line.

Basic design of pillboxes varied and there were further local variations to account for available materials and manpower. Some concrete ones were shuttered with wood, others were shuttered with corrugated iron. Some had a brick skin [see above] or concrete block skin into which the liquid concrete was poured. Most were civilian-built as the army was needed to train and re-equip following Dunkirk.

Ancient monuments were included. Dover Castle still has an anti-tank gun emplacement cut into its medieval walls. Pevensey Castle has several pillboxes built into Roman or Norman walls. Bromholme Abbey at Bacton, in Norfolk, has a massive pillbox built into medieval material. One pillbox was even built in Parliament Square, London, where it was camouflaged as a news vendor's stand. A couple of pill boxes still survive overlooking Pall Mall in central London.

Other variations included revolving concrete turrets [Tett Turrets] and the revolving steel Alan-Williams turret.

Henry Wills' book 'Pillboxes' [ISBN 0-436-57360-1] contains much detail and extensively researched national maps showing current surviving pillboxes but many have been lost. Some pillboxes, in Northumberland, are now listed buildings. At Pevensey Castle one pillbox was demolished because it blocked the road but all the rest were retained and preserved as they were seen as the latest stage in the castle's defensive history.

In addition to Wills [and published more recently] is Silent Sentinels, by Christopher Bird, [ISBN 0 948400 81 1] published by Larks Press of Dereham, Norfolk [tel: 01328 829207]. This second is a county guide to Norfolk only but includes Ordnance Survey map references and many photos. It also covers dragons' teeth and other obstacles.

"He had closed his store permanently and was at home all day now. He and Miss Rosa lived in the back of the house, with the front door locked and the front shutters closed and fastened, and where, so the neighbors said, he spent the day behind one of the slightly opened blinds like a picquet on post, armed not with a musket but with the big family bible ... until a detachment of troops would pass: whereupon he would open the bible and declaim in a harsh loud voice even above the sound of tramping feet, the passages of the old violent vindictive mysticism which he had already marked as the actual picquet would have ranged his row of cartridges along the window sill."

-- William Faulkner

Is this house haunted?

Not sure what it is about this house. Must be like the flowers... I know that there is a great photo here, I just can't make it happen. It was a bit early in the day for this side of the building, but, never having shot it and given that we had only seconds to spare, I grabbed a couple shots.

Experience the wonderment of our world in a way that will enthrall, captivate and inspire you! Award-winning aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and narrator Glenn Close take you on a spectacular voyage around the world in Home, a unique film with such breathtaking imagery, you’ll want to enjoy it time and time again.

Former actor Yann Arthus-Bertrand directed this visually astonishing portrait of the Earth as seen from mesmerizing aerial views. Home is not the first documentary to survey our planet from the air, but Arthus-Bertrand brilliantly and dreamily captures the miraculous linkage within delicate eco-systems. For viewers whose eyes glaze over at descriptions of the way Earth recycles energy and matter, Home underscores the beautiful and awesome reality of that complex process. Narrated by actress Glenn Close (in this English-language version), Home begins by exploring and clarifying the natural history of water, sunlight, and the role simple life-forms such as algae played (and still play) in making the planet hospitable to more evolved, living things. As the film moves along, it also has a way of rebooting one's lazy assumptions about familiar phenomena. The Grand Canyon, for example, might be a fantastic sight to behold, but it's also a collection of billions and billions of shells compressed under Earth's oceans long ago. The carbon trapped in the Grand Canyon was drained from the atmosphere, helping--once again--oxygen-dependent life to develop.
Similarly, plant life, Home tells us, broke up the water molecule and released oxygen into the atmosphere. Everything is linked, everything is part of a grand machine--the film makes this clear in scores of ways, and not just by telling us. Arthus-Bertrand reveals the intricate, breathtaking designs and patterns of glaciers feeding rivers, of animals feeding on plant life so more plant life can grow, of Australia's great Coral Reef's role in keeping the ocean in eco-balance. Of course, a big part of the story is the impact short-sighted humans have on these systems: the way we overfish, or drain deserts of scarce fossil water, or turn non-farming lands into perverse engines for agriculture. There is much to be alarmed at watching Home, but there is much to move one as well. --Tom Keogh

Crew of the Hokule'a or stay in the shade

Crew of the Hokule'a or stay in the shade

This is the first of many Polynesian Voyaging canoes that have sailed throughout Polynesia and the Pacific by wind power and celestrial navagation. This is boat that Uncle Eddie Aikau took his last voyage on. Out on the ocean there is limited protection from the elements. You stay in the shadows whenever possible.

I dedicate this photo to the spirit of Eddie.

As a young boy I grew up in Pauoa Valley, a little neighborhood nestled between Punchbowl crater and Pacific Heights. Just a couple miles from downtown Honolulu but far enough removed to avoid its haste and endless, self-defeating or pointless pursuit of happiness. It was a place where a kid could be a kid. We hiked the mountains and swam in the streams surrounded by the city. No one ever locked their doors and everyone was always welcome.

I attended Pauoa school for my second and third grade years. I had my friend
Wayne in my class and he was there at church on Sundays so naturally we became best friends. Everyday after school we'd spend our time exploring, fishing in the stream, or trying to find something gross that we would give to his brother who would eat anything for a quarter. We'd always end up at Wayne's house, and time it for when uncle Eddie was done working as caretaker for the Chinese graveyard where they lived.

Man how we loved him. He always had time and a smile for us. We'd ride on the power mower with him sitting there with our arms around him smilin. We'd help him rake or whatever he needed to do so he could be done for the day. Because when he was done...it was time for football. He would throw hundreds of passes and we would play until sundown. "Eddie would throw".........perfect spirals everytime. I'd get home late every night for dinner with my mother asking where I was. It was always the same answer, "oh, me and Wayne were just playing with Uncle Eddie."

Days when uncle Eddie wasn't around weren't quite the same. But we knew if he was gone, he was out surfing, saving someone or getting into some kind of adventure he would tell us about later. We were so proud when we found out he was invited to sail on the Hokule'a. We knew it meant a lot for our culture and what it meant to our kupuna.(elders)

It was early one morning in March 1978(I remember it was real dark that morning) and I arrived at school and there was Wayne sitting on the steps outside of class, crying. I sat down next to him and put my arms around him to comfort him and ask what happened. He turned to me with tears in his eyes and said, "Uncle Eddie is dead!" My heart just dropped and my eyes started to water and I just sat and cried too. The bell rang and we didn't hear it. The teacher came out to get us into class and asked us what was wrong and we told her. She told us to come in when we were ready with a tear in her eye. We just sat there for what seemed like an hour, until she came out and MADE us come in.

Things were never the same we had lost a great friend.....we had lost uncle Eddie =(

We found out later what had happened....that he had died doing what he had always done. Risking his life for others.

Shi Shi trail bridge - Makah

Shi Shi trail bridge - Makah

The first 1/2 mile of trail to Shi Shi on Makah land showed lots of promise like this cantalevered footbridge over a swamp filled with skunk cabbage.

Soon however, the trail becomes very much like any other Northwest trail. No complaints though. The trail delivers you to a wonderful beach!

Sunday night June 14th, 2009 - my wife and I camped in the back of our pickup truck canopy at the “South Beach” camp on Washington’s Pacific Ocean coast.

Monday, we drove to Neah Bay, where we took an 8 mile round trip hike from the Makah Indian Reservation trailhead, along Shi Shi beach, to the beach immediately south of the Point of the Arches - - and back. After the Shi Shi Beach hike, we drove back north and took the short, but outstanding, one mile round trip hike to the Cape Flattery & Tatoosh Island overlook. There we saw marine birds and were treated to the sight of a gray whale swimming north through the channel between Tatoosh Island and Cape Flattery.

Tuesday, we drove from our “basic” motel room in Neah Bay, back to our home in Eastern Washington, via the Hood Canal route. The back road travel and hiking over the two and half days were really enjoyable. My wife and I both had a great time and especially enjoyed the hikes and the camp at South Beach.

My flickr photo set “Shi Shi Beach - June 2009” has a detailed narrative of the trip and hikes.

A couple, backpacking south, exchanged photo op turns with us. We were both using a Canon G10. This photo is looking north at the north end of Shi Shi as we were hiking south on the beach towards Point of the Arches.

The dauphin’s bedchamber

The dauphin’s bedchamber

The dauphin’s bedroom is reached from the marble courtyard by crossing a guardroom and two antechambers. Its function, dimensions and decor date from 1747. Prior to that a smaller room was here, successively the gilt study where Monseigneur exhibited the paintings in his collection, and the study of the regent, who died here in 1723. Gabriel made the drawings for this room as well as for all the decoration work carried out during his tenure as the king’s first architect (1742 to 1775). In keeping with the custom of the time, the alcove was hung with silks while the rest of the room was panelled by carved oak decorated with gilt motifs on a white ground (from the workshop of Jacques Verbeckt, who made most of the panelling intended for Versailles at that time).
The dauphin’s bed no longer exists and has been replaced by a bed “a la duchesse” — in other words, the canopy is not held up by pillars — made for the marquise de Crequy ca. 1740; its fabrics (opposite) are decorated with stitched foliage and medallion motifs; those on the headboard depict the shepherd Endymion asleep.
The painting of a farm to the right of the bed (above) is a copy that Queen Marie Leszczinska made of an original by her drawing teacher Jean-Baptiste Oudry, which is in the Louvre.

Each year hundreds of thousands of dutch people go to free markets and participate festivals all over the country.

And orange is our country's national color besides the red, white and blue (flag color).
