J'ai avec grande fierte resolu l'enigme de l'automate recalcitrant, lors de ma derniere expedition au chalet. En effet, ces nouveaux automates tout brillants et polis (du verbe polir) des Transports Publics du Chablais ont la facheuse tendance a ne pas vouloir obeir au coups de doigt (pourtant bien precis et appliques) sur leur ecran tactile.

Tres tres enervant quand on essaie desesperement de prendre son billet avant le depart imminent du train (ici, vous voyez Bagha en liberte dans la salle d'attente parce que le train m'avait passe sous le nez... 1h d'attente).

Le probleme est le suivant: vu l'angle de l'ecran, on ne le regarde pas a la normale (a angle droit si vous preferez). On le regarde vraiment depuis en haut. Le resultat est que les zones tactiles ne sont pas alignees avec le dessin des boutons.

Une fois qu'on a compris qu'il suffit de taper sous les boutons pour que ca marche... la vie est plus facile.

My creativity juices aren't flowing.
Grabbed a picture from October to edit.
My apologies.

However...
I downloaded GIMP one or two weeks ago. I'm so used to the editor I've had for the past 3-4 years that GIMP is insanely complicated for me, which lead to a little bit of delay in figuring it out. So I'm just now getting around to looking for tutorials on the enternet.

One of the biggest reasons I wanted a better editor/photoshop was because my current one doesn't have the ability to add vignette's unless manually done with paintbrush, which can look *really* weird if not done well.
So I searched for a vignette tutorial and found a decent one, but apparently the person that made it was using a pattern on the edges instead of just a dark color to create a shadow or dark corner effect, so that was irritating. I kinda had to figure out the rest on my own.

This picture went through so much editing it's not even funny. I have a black and white version too. It took be about 20 minutes to decided which one to post on flickr.
eh..

Well I certainly need more practice with GIMP and vignette-making, but I guess this is alright for a start.

On a similar note:
I went to Fort Worth Camera today with my mom to look at studio lighting and lenses. Very cool stuff, but they sure are expensive!
Turns out the business is moving though, so they were running a generous sale on some of their products. My mom got me two photography books half-off. One book is for studio lighting techniques and the other is for family portraits. I looked at a portrait book(for singles/seniors or couples) but it was a bit more pricey.
Maybe later.

I was in the world's worst mood yesterday. It was a combination of being pissed off at still being at home, having not managed to find a job, trapped in the same house for dayson end, and a lack of sleep and weird sleeping patterns. Scissors cutting through my hand kinda summed it up. I didn't want to slice through my own hand, or through anyone elses, but given the tools I had, scissors through hand was the best way to sum up my mood- irritated and pissed off!!

I got packing in earnest today so I felt much better! :) Plus, I managed to download all my images after I deleted them a couple weeks ago (which really pissed me off!!)! Now all I gotta do is reorganise them.....

Music Artist Flash Website - Jimmer Bolden

I was hired to help this artist work on his image, PR and marketing strategy through the creation of a self-contained Flash web site. The site is fully animated, and includes a built in music player that plays music throughout the site. All page tranistions are animated. The site has a custom built music player page that promotes the Artist's current album. I was also hired to shoot the photos that were used for the Album artwork and the theme of the site. This site also includes a simple form to allow people to subscribe to the Artist's mailing list or contact the Artist directly. A cutom photo gallery features multiple galleries and displays wide screen style photos. Elegance and intimate "hip" style were design goals we achived with this project.

Music Artist Website - Stacy Francis

The incomparable Stacy Francis needed a web site to showcase her in a way that did justice to her beauty, professionalism and magical performance. A series of photos taken a a beautifuly staged concert was used to create the basis for this site, which features an "A-list" Flash photo gallery an music player, bio, links and curent events page. Image resotration was done on several of the photos in the gallery - image resotration has become a special interest for me, especially when someone has captured a brillant and magical event, but the photo is damaged or otherwise below acceptable quality.

Library Screensavers for the Nook

Last weekend I uploaded some images to my Nook as screensavers and was happy to have them surprise me every time I opened it to read. Gave me a simple idea for the library: Offer free screensavers for our eBook and audiobook users that download from our website. I got the project green light and it's on * already! (!) I've made four so far (including ones for Harry Potter and Twilight fans). The hope is that some people might want them on their Nook and will be subtly reminded where they can download more titles.

That's my Nook and Midge's coffee cup in the photo. The cup was a gift to Midge from Barbie. (I want to credit everyone involved!) As for that radiant statue: it's The Reading Girl by Pietro Magni. It sits by a window in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. I fell in love with it and snapped three years ago.

Screensaver

The only thing I can describe this as is a "screensaver shot". The sky was so perfect I couldn't resist lying on the ground with my 17-55mm and a polariser and shooting up through the cotton candy grasses. Unfortunately, it was a little too windy to get the details in the grass perfect, but if Bill Gates wants to buy it for the next edition of Windows.....

Lynx

Lynx has been used extensively within the Army Air Corps for a wide variety of roles and tasks. It is predominantly a battlefield utility helicopter although it has been used for both anti-tank and reconnaissance operations. The addition of door gunners has allowed Lynx to operate in the very close air support role in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Two versions are in service with the Army Air Corps - namely Mk 7 (skids) and the Mk 9 (wheeled undercarriage). Posters like this were important to rebuilding Hatch's client base in the community. I carved the two block illustration after a photo of my Grandfather and my youngest sister. The smaller type on this poster was cast on a Ludlow which we had recently acquired. I don't imagine it is used at all there anymore.

Jenny Omnichord: Across Canada With An Omnichord And A Pair Of Scissors

The multitalented Jenny Mitchell, who's released albums with The Burning Hell, The Barmitzvah Brothers and solo as Jenny Omnichord, is struggling to break free from London, Ont. Can she do it?

Currently on tour somewhere in central Canada, Mitchell spoke with ChartAttack about music, haircuts and life in general following a recent show in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your background as a musician?
I've been playing for The Barmitzvah Brothers for eight years, and that was my first and only real band. And then I joined The Burning Hell just this last year, and I've been performing solo for the last three or four years. Those are my main projects, and I've been playing the omnichord the whole time. It's the one instrument that's featured into almost everything I've done.

Is there anyone in The Barmitzvah Brothers who's actually had a bar mitzvah?
No, no.

So why did you go with that name?
Well, the omnichord, the earlier models, have a very sort of klezmer sound to them — a very folky type feel. Without really knowing what klezmer was, it struck me as the kind of music that would be played at bar mitzvahs. Originally the band was just me and my friend Geordie [Gordon] and we thought it would be a humorous name. And we didn't want to be one of those bands which changes their name and confuses people, so we're sort of stuck with it.

So tell me more about this thing you're playing called the omnichord.
It's designed to be an auto harp. An auto harp is one of those folk instruments that has a whole lot of strings and then buttons with chord names on them. You would hold the chord buttons and then strum it and it would mute all the strings that weren't part of that chord. Essentially, the omnichord was an electronic version of that. And it also has a beat box element of preprogrammed beats and bass lines and drums that you can add. It's also designed to be the instrument that everybody can play. Anyone can do it, but you get a lot more out of it if you put more into it. I've been figuring out all kinds of things that the omnichord has to offer that the average non-musician person who gets enthralled by the simplicity maybe wouldn't be able to find.

How's your new Jenny Omnichord album doing?
It's doing well. So far I'm hand-making the cases out of wood. It's really neat. Every sale is something that I personally created. In terms of the physical product, every single one has come directly from me. I've never had an album that I was so personally connected to on that physical level, so I'm really enjoying it when I see it pop up in various places. I'm almost through the first 500 and after that I'll probably do a normal jewel case for practicality, but it's fun for now.

And how's the touring going?
I've gone across Canada three times in less than 12 months, which is pretty amazing. I got my driver's license to go on tour with Wax Mannequin to be the "other driver," and since then I've done a lot of driving for a person who's never had a license before!

So tell me about the cross-Canada haircutting book?
I've been working on that since 2006 and whenever I get the chance to cross the country I've been collecting haircuts from strangers. I give haircuts, take a before and after photo, and get them to tell me a story, which I record. Eventually, I'll put it all together as a book of my three years of travels with random Canadian stories and photos.

Why do you make music?
I have all kinds of different reasons. We were sort of outcasts and so to make friends with the cliquey people I started a band to get into the community of independent rock shows. Our band actually ended up getting shows and playing a lot. The irony is that we started on that silly level, but we took it a lot more seriously and now we're still around. I had a rule, though, that there'd be no love songs or political songs. The love songs was a personal challenge, because it seems like everybody in the world writes about that and I thought there must be a lot of other things you can write about. That's with The Barmitzvah Brothers. Then I have side projects where it's almost entirely love songs, autobiographical songs or things I care about. As Jenny Omnichord, it's been liberating to have a solo project where I don't have to worry about having other people be represented by me. I only have to worry about me. But I know it's an omnichord, so I never want people to have to take me too seriously. I like to have serious songs, but thrown in with a certain amount of eye-rolling or laughter. I like to play shows where people can be pretty lighthearted about it.

My Christmas Card NARSAD Artworks Published

This picture has little stories behind it. Several years ago, I was really trying hard to learn about Polaroid SX-70 manipulations (alterations, impressionisms...pick your adjective).

I also read somewhere that highly published photos, say in the fall, were not necessarily taken that fall, but rather the year before. What I was seeing on magazine covers was not really current.
Though it was about July when I took this, I crawled up in my attic space, and got some Christmas ornaments out (first time in their lives they ever saw a July) and walked around the property to find a good tree to put them on. I found a Ponderosa Pine that suited me well enough. I'm sure neighbors driving by thought I was nuts, but I do have some mental disorders; so that was OK. Ponderosa Pines take incredibly little water compared to others, and can survive on something ridiculous like 3 to 6 days of rain or so per year.

I digress. I displayed my photo at the Post Office in Brownsville, Oregon, and a few County Fair Shows, like Lane & Linn, in Oregon, and at the Library in Corvallis, Oregon. I did not attempt to sell it. I made some notecards, by hand, with laser prints of the Polaroid, glued onto stock paper. I did sell some notecards. They were popular. I signed some.

Later my print came to the notice of a member of NARSAD, National Alliance of Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders. They have an offshoot company called NARSADArtworks, that sells the artwork of people with mental disorders, and 100% of the proceeds goes to charity. They have contributed over 100 million dollars to research for cures and treatments. It is an all volunteer staff. I was impressed. They offered to buy my print for a Christmas card, and I was delighted. They did 3 things I wish they hadn't done.They got my name wrong, they rectangularized my square print, cropping it in a way I didn't really care for, and the colors on the card were such that the tree needles looked brownishly dead. However; I was so happy to have my first nationally available published card, that I tried to just realize they probably knew what was best.

If you look closely you will see that the blue ornament still shows a little tiny star. When I was doing the manipulating, I thought it best to leave it alone. Touching it at all would probably just smear it. Several people have commented on and enjoyed the little star. This addresses My Story and My Life as a budding photographer.

I may add more later about the Polaroid Manipulation process in general. But that is really another story.

I know what this is...3 ornaments in a pine tree, but can anyone tell me if their company used this for a Christmas Card about 6 to 8 years ago? NARSADArtworks told me some large companies purchased the cards for their clients, but they couldn't tell me which ones. I'm curious. Can anyone out there in cyberspace tell me if their company used these? Thanks, Delina

This is an ACEO archival print of one of my funky pop art paintings, Shiny Happy Landscape.

What are ACEOs?

ACEO stands for "Art Cards, Editions and Originals", and refer to artwork that is 2.5" x 3.5" - the size of playing cards or baseball cards. They are fun, tiny, collectible works of art! My detailed artwork looks amazing reproduced on this small scale. I've included a photo of my hand holding the print, so you can get an idea of the size of the print (cute!) and the wonderful color saturation.

About the painting Shiny Happy Landscape:

This happy, joyous landscape is filled with colorful, bizarre flowers, fluttering butterflies, a bright bird, buzzing bee, crawling caterpillar, and a rainbow cloud over a softly luminescent aqua-lime background. The surface of the piece is textured to create a sense of depth and substance. This painting evokes a wondrous sense of happiness! The colors and designs arise spontaneously and reflect my interest in tribal and aboriginal art, specifically in the act of storytelling through nonrepresentational means. My abstract art is also heavily inspired by my world travels, particularly my visits to remote tribal villages in the Kutch region of India, as well as my visits to temples and roadside shrines in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal.

I had the photo of the tree that I took a while ago and I had no idea what to do with it. It looked kinda boring by itself and all of the color effects didn't make it any more interesting. I finally decided to try putting a texture on it. After an hour of playing around with it, I made it all grayscale; I added a massive amount of contrast to the tree to remove shading from the sky.

I used the Displace filter to make it look like the tree was printed on the paper before the paper was scrunched up.

A tip for using the Displace filter: make sure the layer with the texture is exactly the same size as the canvas. Otherwise the layer won't be viewable in the Displace filter dialog. Just right-click on layer + layer to image size.

The quotes and info below are from an article by sports editor Jerry Uhrhammer in the June 26, 1971 issue of the Eugene Register-Guard.

8100 fans watched Pre run the second-fastest US 3-mile time ever. The record was held by Gerry Lindgren who ran 12:53.0 in 1966. Lindgren placed fourth in this race. Pre and Lindgren were the only two US men to break 13 minutes as of this race.

Steve Stageberg of Georgetown TC, originally from South Eugene HS, Oregon, was only .5 second from becoming the third to break 13 minutes in his personal record run. His 13:00.4 time beat his prior personal best in 1970 of 13:15.8 by 15.4 seconds. "And this was precisely the race I wanted -- a hard gut race from the beginning. None of that puss-footing around with a slow pace and everybody sprinting at the end." Even miler Marty Liquori predicted the race would be "The best three-mile there's ever been in America . . . a very competitive three or four-way race down to the last lap."

Pre set a new meet record last set by Bob Schul of the Ohio AAU with a 13:10.4 in 1965. Pre set new Hayward Field and U. Oregon records in the three-mile, beating his own prior record time of 13:01.6 on April 3, 1971 at a dual OR-Stanford meet.

As another indicator of the quality of competitors at this meet, Ivory Crockett of the Philadelphia Pioneer AC, the defending champion with 9.3 seconds in the 1970 AAU 100 yard dash, placed fifth in this meet's 100 event with a time of 9.1!

Pre grimaced in disappointment at not beating Lindgren's record time. "I know, but I'm a little closer . . . maybe by the end of the summer." Pre's previous best time in the three mile was 13:01.6.

While Lindgren's 1966 effort was a solo jaunt much of the way. This race was anything but. It was highly competitive the whole distance. Stageberg and Frank Shorter both ran personal best races. Pre, Shorter, Stageberg and Lindgren were in the leading group all the way, Lindgren leading for a time early in the race. Pre and Shorter traded leads much of the rest of the way.

The first mile clocked at 4:17, the second at 4:25. With two laps to go, Pre was in front with Shorter off his shoulder. On the 11th of the 12 laps Pre picked up the pace and opened a slight gap. Stageberg took advantage, moving past Shorter into second. The two Oregonians from Coos Bay and Eugene were side-by-side at the gun lap start.

"With a lap to go, I knew the crowd wanted it, too. . . . I couldn't let them down," said Pre.

Stageberg heard the crowd too: "All the way down the backstretch all I could hear was the din . . . it came in waves. It was deafening . . . an extremely surrealistic feeling."

Going around the turn, Pre looked over and saw Stageberg out of the corner of his eye. Stageberg saw him look. "My first thought was that maybe he's worried."

Both were running strong, but Pre opened up a slight lead on the final turn, then increased as Stageberg began tiring. Pre built the lead to 25 yards at the tape, completing his final lap in 58.8 and the final half mile in 2:02.5.

The elated Pre jogged around the track on victory laps, waving to the crowd. "Did I look tough?" he asked with a grin as he came to the interview area. "I think I had a lot left. I don't know why I let up coming off the last turn." He had seen Stageberg fading. "I should have kept driving to the finish line but I didn't know I was under 13 minutes."

Pre called the track "beautiful" and said the same of the spectators. "Those people are fantastic. They're my people, man. How can you lose with 12,000 people behind you?" (They probably sounded like 12,000).

"I redeemed myself for last year's race, that's for sure," said Pre, referring to his fifth place AAU finish when he ran on an injured foot. When asked what was going through his mind, Pre thought for a moment, then grinned and said: "Who's next?"

Pre and Stageberg's times qualified them for the 1971 Pan-American Games in Cali, Colombia. Pre competed in this meet.

walnut wonder

Check out this little beauty!! This photo/picture frame is handmade my me using reclaimed materials, including the frame which is made from walnut veneer.

It is made to fit an image of 5 x 6 inches or smaller and is supplied with a brass stand, so you can display your photo/picture either landscape or portrait. It is fitted with glass, mountboard slip and backboard, all ready for display.

All my frames are handmade originals :)

Yay Us!

Tom and I are pretty pleased how our project turned out. I took my photo of bluebonnets and had it printed on canvas and Tom made me a rustic frame out of a board from the fence that blew over last year. Now I want to print up more pictures and have Tom build some more frames. :D
