Clock Repair

Clock Repair

Years ago, my father (who loves clocks) gave me a small Lexon alarm clock (side note: Lexon makes incredilby cool looking clocks). A couple of months ago, the second hand fell off. I mentioned this to my father, and he convinced me that repairing it would be straight-forward - and he was right. The only tricky thing was making sure that the alarm hand matched up with the time, but I worked that out.

Clock Repair: Brad re-bushing a clock

Brad re-bushing a clock. Most clocks get dirty and the holes in the clock plates wear out. Brad is correcting this worn condition by cutting the worn material out of the plates and inserting a new piece of brass called a bushing into his clock.

The bushing tool he is using is a specialized tool used to complete this process.

Workhorse Spotmatic Kit

Workhorse Spotmatic Kit

From 1973 through 1983, when I had delusions of being a photographer, I was faithful to Pentax and its workhorse Spotmatic, displayed here in its glorious array.

Missing is the 300mm and 55mm (lost when 'borrowed' by relatives). Newly arrived is the 50 mm with reverser ring on the right (notice the $5 price tag - love those garage sales!!), and a new-to-me 200mm Takumar.

One body needs its meter repaired or replaced. The other has a scratched mirror. But I love film, so I think they'll get some care and attention - and money!

BGLOD

BGLOD

My faithful D70 is going back to Nikon for repairs. Bought in March 2004 and last night I suddenly got the Blinking Green LED Of Death.

I'm not too distressed right now - it was time for a good clean...

Updates!

- Letter from Nikon on the 24/05/06: Approximate repair completion date: 14-June-2006.

- Camera returned in early June, before the quoted date, but with muck on the mirror and a small scratch on the viewfinder grid. Not best pleased.

24/365 - Disk read error

24th january 2010

This is as fun as I had this day. My C-drive gave me a "Disk read error". A 2yrs old SATA-drive. So plugged it in my boyfriends computer (thank god for having more than one computer in your home!). Couldn't copy anything from it but could open and read files... So started a recovery on it... The recovery took almost 24 hours to finish! So all I have done theese days is reading and watching TV and old movies...

Accident with my Fuji

Accident with my Fuji

This is what my Fuji Finepix E900 looks like after I dropped it at the Biffy Clyro gig . A couple of dints, part of the casing coming apart and the rubber grip has come off. I also lost one of my batteries hence no Biffy pics. I did have back up in my little camcorder but thats not meant for pics. Any way I will be able to repair this as its only cosmetic but I think its time for another compact me thinks. Now what is it to be...Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji again or what about a Vivitar!.

Wife - Coyote Natural Bridge

Wife - Coyote Natural Bridge

My wife enjoying our stop at Coyote Natural Bridge, on our day hike from Jacob Hambin Arch, down the canyon.

Tuesday 21 April 2009

The alarm went off at 4 am and by 5 am we had our backpacks loaded in the back of our pickup truck and we were on our way to the trailhead. We chose the easy, scenic and popular Hurricane Wash approach into Coyote Gulch. The trailhead is located a little over 33 miles down the miserable washboard laden “hole in the rock” road, which in turn is located between milepost 64 & 65 on highway 12 north of Escalante, Utah.

It took us almost two hours to bounce our way to the trailhead. At 7 am we had our backpacks on and the sun made its first appearance over the countryside to the east of us, just as we started down Hurricane Wash.

In the narrow canyon portion of Hurricane a few raven would glide over our heads, checking out our “food supply” opportunities. They would be welcome, and ever present company for the rest of this two day backpacking trip.

It took us four hours of steady but slow hiking to arrive at our selected campsite on the down canyon, “toe” section of Jacob Hamblin arch. It was an ideal place to camp with the exception of if rain was a possibility. It was not high enough to be exempt from a fast rise in creek level, yet there was a downstream exit available, should that happen.

There was no foliage at the camp and not bugs. You could say it was located in a humongous alcove, which could easily be viewed as a monstrous “cave”. It gave us a window to the sky (especially beautiful at night), and no need for a rain fly, as we were completely protected from above by the huge alcove.

1/4 mile down canyon was the view up through Jacob Hamblin Arch. A few hundred feet farther down the canyon was a nice “outhouse”. Upstream (and a favorite place for me to wade barefoot) was the view down through Jacob Hamblin arch. In short, we couldn’t have found a more pleasing place to camp and oh the night sky views through the “hole in the roof” of the deep canyon.

Once set up and everything in order at our “alcove camp”, we loaded up the light small day packs we had brought in, for a day hike down canyon. This time, I made sure I had both the Canon G9 and the G10 with me as we headed down stream. The highlight of the down canyon hike was Coyote Natural Bridge. We hiked about 2.5 miles down the canyon that afternoon (near Cliff Arch) and I took several scrambling climbs up into side canyons and alcoves, while my wife relaxed along the creek bottom.

By the time we returned from our 5 mile day hike, it was time to fix dinner, take a few more photos, visit, and get the tent ready for bed. I want to thank Chad Rosenstine for introducing us to the REI three legged backpacking stools. They are light weight, easy to pack AND unbelievably handy around a backpacking camp. No sitting on hard rocks, logs with stubs, or flat on the ground. Face any of three directions easily, store small items in the triangular cloth stool leg support, and most of all, put on and take off, hiking shoes - - with ease. We ended up packing our backpacks so these handy stools could be quickly accessed for a “rest break” while backpacking out the next day.

We both slept very well that night.

Wednesday 22 April 2009

Our backpacking hike back up Coyote Gulch and then up Hurricane Wash, was uneventful but enjoyable. We thought, since it would be hot that day and the route was not “up” instead of “down” canyon, that it might take us a lot longer, but it didn’t. Four hours out, same as the time into camp the day before.

We had thought about retrieving our stored belongings at the Circle “D” and then heading on to our next destination (Rattlesnake Canyon Arches in Western Colorado), but we were dirty, tired, and another night at the Circle “D” sounded really good, so the moment we arrived at the motel, I asked Robert if he had space for us for one more night. He did (same room #7), so I got the room key and got back into our truck and got ready to drive it over to park it in front of our room.

Rattle rattle rattle. Rattle rattle rattle. Our truck wouldn’t start. I had waited one start too many to replace a very old battery and the shaking the truck took on the way out of the hole in the rock road, had pretty much taken care of the old positive post battery clamp. I don’t need to tell you how fortunate we both felt. The “last start” could have easily been at mile 33.7 down the hole in the rock road. Ugh.

Well, as you often find in a small town, we got nothing but help, especially from manager Robert (who had stored our stuff for us). In less than an hour, Don, at the repair shop behind the 66 gas station at town, had us fitted out with not only a new fully charged battery, but a new battery terminal clamp as well. We were set…….and more than a little lucky.

We packed all of our backpacking gear into duffle bags and stored it in the pickup truck, since we would not need it the rest of the trip. We had just one

DVD22's Guts

DVD22's Guts

My dvd player, a not too old Harman Kardon DVD22, did not switch on anymore. The power indicator came on, but nothing else happened. The thing was dead apart from the indicator light.

After opening the case of the player I found this. Hmm disappointing! Or is it just well organized?

On the left you can see the power supply. At the bottom we can see the device which rotates the discs and applies a laser beam to rad the data from it. The circuit board on the top right does all the signal processing. There is also some more circuitry placed vertically at the bottom of this picture. I think it's there mainly for the display.

The DVD player has been stroppy for the last while. Won't play some disks, freezes up on others, etc... Before giving up on it though, I thought I'd see if there was anything obviously wrong. Nope. It's about to become parts.

fixing the hole in the hallway wall

we suspect that there used to be a closet here. it's now part of the bathroom (separate shower and bathtub). Liz put up the studs so the drywall could be screwed in.
(4-3-08: actually, this used to be the other side of the stairs; i believe it was called the maid's stairs, or something along that line. the former owner took out the stairs and turned that area into a 1/2 bathroom (1st floor) and a shower (2nd floor).)

requests.

requests.

please read the rules i have first, it probably does sound picky.
but i am indeed a very picky person.
and i'm serious about all of it.
i was debating if i should do requests or not.. because soo many people are doing them.. but i decided to anyway.
& i must say, i'm really proud of this edit. :) i wanted to make it themed.

- let me know if you can't read some of it due to selena. i made the rules and then i attached it to the picture. *allsize it first though.

ALSO! I probably won't be able to work on them until after vacation.

PS: I'll be honest with you, just because you request something does not garauntee that I will be able to make it for you (there are limitations with the program I use) but I'll try my hardest to do so.

My latest member of the Fleet - Important Bit!

My latest member of the Fleet - Important Bit!

These set of four pictures show my newest aquisition, and my first ever Leyland "Big Cat!". This lovely Plaxton Paramount 3500 bodied Semi-Auto Leyland Tiger, is seen in her current storage location in Staffordshire. The plan is to pick her up in Mid April once the "Man in Black" has given her an MoT, put a few badges on her, inspected her, topped up all her levels and got her ready to make way to Bristol!

This coach started life as KGS 490Y with Travellers of Hounslow, and was sold after only a year to Yellow Coaches of Bournemouth (Bournemouth Transport), fir use on the continent and eventually as a vehicle for National Express duies. Whilst at Yellow Buses she carried the registration number RIB 4788 and was finalyy re-registered FRU 675Y (Native South Coast Reg), before being sold in 1999. I do want to put her back to the KGS plate she initially carried, but I am loathed to lose the Bournemouth Registration mark.

If any of you have the book by Colin Morris "Glory Days - Bournemouth Transport", then will notice a picture of 94 (Fleet number) when she was working a dupe for Shamrock and Rambler and is pictured in the book leaving Victoria Coach Station in London on the 3 hour journey back to Bournemouth.

I hope to one day restore 94 back to Yellow Coaches livery, but with a long and costly repair bill on my Lynx (Found this one out today!), and my ex-Yellow Buses Fleetline that needs money spending on her, couple this with the fact that I am being made redundant in the early summer months, then you will all understand my reasons for keeping her in White for the forseeable future (Dependant on Job Prospects!), and my reluctance to spend any of my Redundancy on my buses, at least until I have another job!!!
