Junie Astor
French postcard, no. 556. Photo: U.F.P.C
Junie Astor (1911 - 1967) was a French actress who was highly popular in the late 1930's.
Born in Marseille, 21 december 1911, Junie Astor, real name Rolande Risterucci, was obliged to learn classic ballet which she abandoned for lessons at the Conservatoire National Superieur d’Art Dramatique. This formation permitted her to have her debut on stage in the play Lundi 8 heures at the Theatre des Ambassadeurs in 1933, in company of Julien Carette. The same year Junie Astor also started in cinema with D’amour et d’eau fraiche, with Fernandel. The beautiful newcomer made her mark in Ademai aviateur (1934) by Jean Tarride and with Noel-Noel. From then on, she played one (supporrting) part after another, such as in Tovarich (1934) by Jacques Deval and with Andre Lefaur and Irene de Zilahy, Mayerling (1936) by Anatole Litvak and with Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux, and with Danielle Darrieux, Valentine Tessier, Eve Francis, Betty Stockfeld in Club de femmes (1936) by Jacques Deval. On the instigation of producer Alexander Kamenka, Astor played Jean Gabin's love interest in Jean Renoir’s liberal adaptation of Gorki’s The Lower Depths: Les bas-fonds (1936), though the real leads were for Gabin as the bum and thief Pepel and Louis Jouvet as the impoverished Baron. Years after Renoir gave a severe critique, condemning Astor as non-photogenic.
Not everybody thought that way, though, because her role in Le coupable (1936) by Raymond Bernard won Junie Astor the prestigious Prix Suzanne Bianchetti for the most promising female acting talent of the year. (NB Bianchetti had been an actress in silent cinema, her husband the critic Rene Jeanne had created the award.) Despite the award Astor had to satisfy with supporting roles, though she had an active career in the 1930s, with the most important directors of those times, such as the Marcel Achard adaptation Noix de coco (Jean Boyer 1939) with Raimu and Marie Bell, and Battement de c?ur (Henri Decoin 1940) with Danielle Darrieux and Claude Dauphin. She also tried her luck in Italy in 1939-1940 with films such as Tutto per la donna (Mario Soldati 1940) with Antonio Centa, even if these were not shown in France. In 1943 she also acted in L’eternel retour by Jean Delannoy and with Madeleine Sologne and Jean Marais.
March 1942, together with Danielle Darrieux, Suzy Delair, Rene Dary, Albert Prejean and Viviane Romance, Junie Astor was part of the so-called ‘train of shame’ for Berlin, in occasion of the premiere of Premier rendez-vous by Henri Decoin and with Danielle Darrieux and of a visit to the Berlin film studios. If Danielle Darrieux’ presence was understandable, for she wanted to liberate her husband Porfirio Rubirosa, one wonders why the other actors, working for the Franco-German Continental company, accepted to join this masquerade set up to legitimize the regime. At the Liberation Astor had a last major role in Du Guesclin (1948), starring Fernand Gravey, and directed by Bernard de La Tour. Astor married De la Tour and they founded Astor Production, but the promising initiative didn’t struck ground – the marriage neither (they split after six years). Astor nevertheless joined Raymond Pellegrin in Coupable? (1950) and Eddy Constantine, Noel-Noel and Jean Richard in the comedy Les truands (Carlo Rim 1956). She also played in Maurice Boutel’s Interpol contre X (1960) and L’homme de l’Interpol (1965), but these B-series policiers didn’t help her career. In the 1950s Astor returned to the stage in Ombre chere (1952) by Jacques Deval and with Robert Lamoureux. Tired of her profession Astor focused on the exploitation of two Parisian cinemas, Astor and Rio Opera. While finishing Joe Caligula (1966) by Jose Benazeraf and with Gerard Blain, a film that for a long time would remain forbidden by the French censure, Junie Astor died at the age of 55 years, because of a car accident that occurred 22 august 1967 in Sainte-Magnance dans l’Yonne. She lies buried at the cemetery of Bagneux.

1920 OK Oilfield Special
This truck dates from 1920 and was built in Muskogee, Oklahoma for use in the oilfields.
The OK company brought in parts from other manufacturers, four cylinder engines from Buda, Wisconsin gearboxes and front and rear axles from Mack. The tires are 40 x 8 due to it's working height in the oilfields.
Life expectancy of a truck in this rugged terrain was about three years, this truck dropped a big end which went through the engine and was scrapped and buried on site.
40 years later it was discovered and dug up in two halves. A bit of research was done and it was discovered to be the only example left in the world.
In the 1970's it was imported into the UK with the intention of restoring it but the work was not completed and it spent the next 15 years rusting away on a farm.
In 1997 the present owners brought it and restoration began in earnest. The timber was found to be Burmese Oak and has been replaced with the same wood. The only saveable part of the cab was the angle iron frame, which has now been copper riveted. The front mudguards and stays, radiator casting, front and rear axles, wheel centres, gearbox, steering box and most of the chassis are all original.

It wasn't easy to make this picture. This car was standing in front of the entrance, so the front of the car had the light of outside and the rear was standing in the dark area. But It looks great with the scissors- doors open.

Major tourist attraction, the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, North Dakota!
Shredded-up tarpaulin on wheels with seats! I have to admit I wouldn't mind getting pulled around on that thing along with a few friends -- plus wine & candles & a cheese plate.
Me & my friends we'd say, "How come there ain't any trees growing on that hillside!"
We'd say, "I understand the parkinglot conifers, those are everyplace I go -- but how come there ain't any trees up there upon the hillside beyond!"
And then we'd start up a game of Hearts while we got carried around on the grounds of the museum complex. I think it might be kind've fun!

Parramatta

50/365 The Laundry Room
Today was the last full day we had in NYC, very sad... I'm going to miss this place so much. Spent the first half of the day shopping in Madison & Fifth Avenue, and the second half in SoHo. And the last bit of the day doing laundry down in the laundry room, kinda scary down there. Laundry room's are always creepy at some point or some sort.
Right now, I am just WAY too tired to think or do anything- heading to bed. Flight tomorrow to Raleigh, NC.

Common Raven
A life list addition!
A raven story from the Puget Sound region describes the "Raven" as having originally lived in the land of spirits (literally bird land) that existed before the world of humans. One day the Raven became so bored with bird land that he flew away, carrying a stone in his beak. When the Raven became tired of carrying the stone and dropped it, the stone fell into the ocean and expanded until it formed the world in which humans now live.
In the creator role, and in the Raven's role as the totem and ancestor of one of the four northwest clan houses, the Raven is often addressed as Grandfather Raven. It is not clear whether this form of address is intended to refer to a creator Raven who is different from the trickster Raven, or if it is just a vain attempt to encourage the trickster spirit to act respectably.
Bill Reid created the sculpture of The Raven and The First Men depicting a scene from a Haida myth that unifies the Raven as both the trickster and the creator. According to this myth, the raven who was both bored and well fed, found and freed some creatures trapped in a clam. These scared and timid beings were the first men of the world, and they were coaxed out of the clam shell by the raven. Soon the raven was bored with these creatures and planned to return them to their shell. Instead, the raven decided to search for the female counterparts of these male beings. The raven found some female humans trapped in a chiton, freed them, and was entertained as the two sexes met and began to interact. The raven, always known as a trickster, was responsible for the pairing of humans and felt very protective of the them. With the Raven perceived as the creator, many Haida myths and legends often suggest the raven as a provider to mankind.
Raven steals the sun
This is an ancient story told on Puget Sound and includes how Raven helped to bring the Sun, Moon, Stars, Fresh Water, and Fire to the world.[1]
Long ago, near the beginning of the world, Gray Eagle was the guardian of the Sun, Moon and Stars, of fresh water, and of fire. Gray Eagle hated people so much that he kept these things hidden. People lived in darkness, without fire and without fresh water.
Gray Eagle had a beautiful daughter, and Raven fell in love with her. At that time Raven was a handsome young man. He changed himself into a snow-white bird, and as a snow-white bird he pleased Gray Eagle's daughter. She invited him to her father's longhouse.
When Raven saw the Sun, Moon and stars, and fresh water hanging on the sides of Eagle's lodge, he knew what he should do. He watched for his chance to seize them when no one was looking. He stole all of them, and a brand of fire also, and flew out of the longhouse through the smoke hole. As soon as Raven got outside he hung the Sun up in the sky. It made so much light that he was able to fly far out to an island in the middle of the ocean. When the Sun set, he fastened the Moon up in the sky and hung the stars around in different places. By this new light he kept on flying, carrying with him the fresh water and the brand of fire he had stolen.
He flew back over the land. When he had reached the right place, he dropped all the water he had stolen. It fell to the ground and there became the source of all the fresh-water streams and lakes in the world. Then Raven flew on, holding the brand of fire in his bill. The smoke from the fire blew back over his white feathers and made them black. When his bill began to burn, he had to drop the firebrand. It struck rocks and hid itself within them. That is why, if you strike two stones together, sparks of fire will drop out.
Raven's feathers never became white again after they were blackened by the smoke from the firebrand. That is why Raven is now a black bird.

Super Single Tires Wheels
- The Super Single is a motorcycle road racing class proposed by Gavin Trippe. Trippe is the Motorcycle Hall of Famer credited with creating the supermoto class. The Super Single class would be based on modified single cylinder engine dirt bike bodies. One reviewer described the machines as:
- A single, larger wheel, substituted for a tandem assembly. The main benefit of a super single is a reduction in weight; combined with lower rolling resistance the super single promises better fuel economy.
- (wheel) change directions as if revolving on a pivot; "They wheeled their horses around and left"
- A circular object that revolves on an axle and forms part of a machine
- A circular object that revolves on an axle and is fixed below a vehicle or other object to enable it to move easily over the ground
- steering wheel: a handwheel that is used for steering
- Used in reference to the cycle of a specified condition or set of events
- (wheel) a simple machine consisting of a circular frame with spokes (or a solid disc) that can rotate on a shaft or axle (as in vehicles or other machines)
- Become in need of rest or sleep; grow weary
- Cause to feel in need of rest or sleep; weary
- (tire) hoop that covers a wheel; "automobile tires are usually made of rubber and filled with compressed air"
- (tire) lose interest or become bored with something or somebody; "I'm so tired of your mother and her complaints about my food"
- (tire) exhaust or get tired through overuse or great strain or stress; "We wore ourselves out on this hike"

Chris King 28h to Velocity Escape Tubular Cyclocross Wheels
Sold
These wheels only have 3 races in them and very few training miles. The freehub body is still super quiet and could actually use a little more breaking in. The rims are straight and true.
King Classic Black Hubs set, 130mm rear spacing, 28 hole, 3 cross with black single butted DT swiss spokes, Black velocity Escape Tubular rims with machined sidewalls. Two Tufo LPS 30mm tires with cane creek skewers. One of the tires has a small tear and is flat, probably unrepairable, but who knows. They are taped on with tufo tubular tape, easily taken off, i'd recommend re-glueing the tires before using again.
I will ship them, but that will cost another $30

- Two Brothers (Deux Freres) is a 2004 adventure family film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. It is about two tigers who are separated as cubs and then reunited years later.
- The Two Brothers is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, tale number 60. It is Aarne-Thompson type 567A, the magic bird heart, and type 303, the blood brothers.
- The Two Brothers is a 1910 short Western film directed by D. W. Griffith.

Marinus Kuutkak
After having driven in Europe for a few days, we had experienced only friendliness from everyone we met. But I wondered if we might encounter a European who would express some hostility over the American role in Iraq – especially when I explained that we were from Texas.
While driving through northwest France, we spied a monument on a hillside and decided to check it out. We parked our leased, green Renault Kangoo beside a gray Renault Kangoo and were quickly greeted by the proud owners of the gray vehicle. We experimented with our nearly entire vocabulary of the French language and said, “Bonjour.”
Apparently, he could hear our mispronunciation of “Bonjour” and quickly guessed. “So, you are Americans, eh?” he said in fluent English. He introduced himself as Marinus Kuutkak and his wife as Sonja from Waalwyk, Netherlands. “Holland is just a part of the Netherlands,” he explained. “I am a house painter and take a two-month holiday every year when I go on the ‘dole.’ I loved to ride my motorcycle across Europe and once rode 1500 kilometers from Spain to the Netherlands in one day. I have been to the motorcycle races in England five or six times. An injury in a bike accident forced me to give up the motorcycle and buy a car.”
One of their favorite trips is to the American Cemetery at Normandy. “There we help care for two graves – one on each of our birthdays. We clean the grass, fix the fence and care for the rose bushes on the graves of two soldiers who died one year before I was born.
Then with a sheepish grin, he explained that he and Sonja were reliving a trip to Switzerland that they had taken 20 years ago on their motorbike. When they had reached Interlaken, Switzerland, Sonja had tired of the hard bike riding and decided to take the train back home by herself. Recently they decided to do the trip again in their Kangoo to see if they could do it right this time. They even planned to visit Italy. But, the same thing happened – they had a big fight while in Switzerland and did not get to Italy. However, this time they made up and Sonja agreed to ride back with Marinus to the Netherlands.
Marinus explained that when he was young, he could ride his bike all day in the rain, sleep in a tent on the ground and be ready to ride again the next day. But now, at the age of 52, it takes him two days to recover from a hard drive. Then he admitted that he really did very little house-painting and had taken some kind of disability retirement. He now does the housekeeping chores while Sonja has seven more years of work before she can retire. He dabbled in investing till he lost 50% of his savings.
“Being from Texas, you must know George Bush,” he said.
“Well no,” I was forced to admit. “Never met the guy.”
“I don’t like George Bush very much,” Marinus volunteered, “but I totally support the US action in Iraq. I even tried to enlist to help fight in Iraq, but Sonja would not let me. I always wanted to join the Dutch army, but my father would not approve. Also, the law in the Netherlands requires that if there are three boys in one family, only two can enlist. Consequently, I helped my father in a shop while my two brothers served in the army.
“I become angry when anyone says the Americans are wrong about the war in Iraq.
I don’t like the Imams of the Muslim world. All Muslims are dangerous. Immigration is a big problem in Europe. An immigrant can receive a 1100 Euros per month dole for doing nothing. Our government has gone broke in five years due to paying the dole to immigrants.
We chatted easily about the similar autos we were driving and he explained the historical importance of the monument looming before us. The monument comemorates the “Sacred Road” used by French trucks to move supplies to the battle front in the Argonne Woods near Verdun, France for use against the Germans in WWI. From our position by the monument, we could see the historical road below. A sign showed a photo of a long line of army trucks on a gravel road.
I explained that we were headed to Verdun, where we hoped to find the Argonne battlegrounds and look for birds or “oiseau” in French. (A waitress had explained to us that oiseau is pronounced wazoo.) “Be sure to visit the large cemetery and memorial where you can see the bones of soldiers that were dug up in fields after the war by farmers tilling the soil. They also dug up a few bombs that exploded – killing some of the farmers.”
We said our goodbyes and left on the highway toward Verdun. The traffic in Verdun was heavy and we had no local map showing directions to the cemetery. We hoped to see some road sign for assistance. After searching diligently for such a sign through the town, we headed uphill out of town. In a few kilometers, when we were nearly convinced that we would never find the battleground, I saw a sign with a french word that we interpreted as meaning “battle.” Pleased that there are
So, Tuesday night rolls around and Mike and I are loitering at the Ship & Anchor. Traditionally on a Tuesday night we would have joined up with the Fiasco/ASC scooter ride, down the street--but my scoot is still out of commission, as is Monty's. Monty has this shiny new BMW in the driveway. Hell, let's go for a quick hop to the foothills!
Pulling off the ramp onto Bow Trail I catch the profile of two adventure bikes fully laden, and I most definitely did not recognize the lisence plates. As it turned out it was a Kiwi and his brother riding from Denver, CO to Alaska. They were quite lost on their way to a friend's in Canmore.
"Canmore? We were just heading to Canmore!" Monty says, "we'll take you there!"
An hour and a half later, we part ways, and they continue on their journey. Good luck, gentlemen. May you not need those spare tyres you're hauling with you!

This photo was a little dark for my tastes, but I wasn't able to get many of our guests due to failing light.

Used Tyre Depository
In a woodland not too far from where I live, that once formed part of the ancient Caledonia Forest.
Located in Torwood, Central Scotland, north west of Larbert, which contains significant landmarks including Torwood Castle ruins and Tor Wood Broch dating back to the Roman advance it is quite sad to see that this old and disused quarry is now used as a dumping ground for used tyres and junk. Not sure if this is sanctioned by the local authority or not but either way it's a poor and short sighted fix for the disposal of such items.

In the final European F1 tests of the season, each team had a maximum of 30 sets of tires at their disposal, split between the different compounds that they had each previously nominated to test. This meant that 360 of the new P Zero tires were available for use in Spain, allowing teams to acquire information that will be vital when it comes to formulating race strategies this year.

Ferrari 275 GTB 6C
The Ferrari 275 was a 2-seat front-engined Gran Turismo automobile produced by Ferrari between 1964 and 1968. It used a 3286 cc Colombo 60° V12 engine and produced 280-300 hp. The Pininfarina-designed body was a graceful evolution of the car's predecessor, the 250, and strongly contrasted with its replacement, the Daytona. The 275 introduced Ferrari's transaxle concept, where the transmission and rear axle are integrated.
For the 1965 racing season, 4 lightweight 275 GTB Competizione Speciales were built and equipped with 250 LM engines.
For the 1966 season, Ferrari decided to build 12 lightweight 275 GTB/C cars, they were constructed between the end of the 275 two-cam production run and the start of the 275 four-cam production run; even though they very much resembled the road-going 275 GTB, not one body panel was the same and underneath and very little of the road car remained.
Mauro Forghieri designed a special super-lightweight steel and aluminium version of the 275 GTB chassis. A regular suspension was fitted, but it was made slightly stiffer by the addition of extra springs. Scaglietti bodied the chassis with an ultra thin aluminum body; the panels were about half as thick as the ones used on the GTO; the entire rear section was reinforced by fibreglass to prevent it from flexing at the slightest impact. In all, this focus on saving weight made a difference of over 150 kg compared to the alloy bodied road cars.
Like the four Competizione Speciales, the 275 GTB/C was powered by the 250 LM engine. Specifically for the 275 GTB/C, Weber constructed the 40 DF13 carburetor of which three would replace the six 38 DCNs found on the 250 LM. The rest of the drivetrain was similar to the 275 GTB, but strengthened slightly.
Two of the twelve built were sold for street use. Unlike the race cars, these street cars were fitted with alloy wheels shod with Pirelli tires. Competition cars were fitted with special Borrani wire wheels, shod with Dunlop's latest racing tires. After the 275 GTB/C, no competition Ferrari would be fitted with wire wheels again.
A British-entered 275 GTB/C finished 8th overall, gaining class victory in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.
fort dunlop birmingham 160310
Fort Dunlop is one of the most spectacular surviving monuments to Birmingham's industrial history.
Urban Splash made a ?40 million redevelopment scheme to make a significant improvement on the original.
Built in 1916, the building was used to store tyres made on the site by the world famous Dunlop rubber company. At its peak, 10,000 workers toiled at Fort Dunlop. An entire village, locally known as ‘Tyretown’, developed around the site to meet the worker’s needs, including shops, a cinema, concert hall and a sports club.
The windows, many of which were in poor condition, have been removed along with various poor-quality extensions. A new glass wall has been set back from the former window openings on each of the five floors, creating a kind of external promenade which provides routing for services and makes the job of window cleaners on this massive building literally a stroll.
Though the project is huge, the architectural concepts are strikingly bold and simple. The 100-bedroom Travelodge hotel is conceived as an extension to the eastern end, where the original facade has been replaced by a glazed wall.
The new block is distinguished by being painted bright blue
