Royal Blue ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM I 1928 The Phantom I is the second model in the Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp line. It was originally and even now correctly referred to as New Phantom. (The long production previous model, in numbers and number of production years, was the 40/50 hp model known affectionately after the most famous Barker bodied Reg No AX-201 as the "Silver Ghost". Other 40/50 chassis were also given names such as Silver Rogue etc. too). So to differentiate that now there was a new 40/50 hp model the word New was prefixed to the Phantom name. With the introduction of the third 40/50 hp model named Phantom II, the New Phantom name caused confusion so it was called, retrospectively and perhaps without official sanction, Phantom-I. Like the famed Ghost, the Phantom was constructed both in the United Kingdom and United States, with the US model trailing the UK by one year on introduction and two in replacement. One major improvement over the Silver Ghost was the new pushrod-OHV straight-6 engine. Constructed as three groups of two cylinders with detachable heads (state of the art at the time), the large engine produced excellent power to pull the large heavy car. The engine used a 4? in (107.9 mm) bore and long 5? in (139.7 mm) stroke for a total of 7.7 L (7668 cc/467 in?) of displacement. Aluminium was substituted for cast iron in the cylinder heads in 1928, and proved to be the Achilles heel, plagued with corrosion problems. The separate gearbox connected through a rubberised fabric flexible coupling to the clutch and through a torque tube enclosed drive to the differential at rear, just like the Ghost. It was changed to unitary gearbox with open drive shaft in the Phantom-II. Most UK Phantom I's retained the fuel gauge at the tank, but some US models had one on the dash. It retained oil lubrication through Enots nipples, some times as many as 50, which attached to a special Enots oil pressure gun and needed to be attended to regularly at 500, 1000 and 2000 mile intervals, involving much time and effort. (The Phantom II adopted the American Bijur oiling system which connected all the oiling points with an elaborate plumbing system and orifices and oiled all the points with a stroke of a single pump). Semi-elliptical springs suspended the front, while cantilever springs were used in the rear. 4-wheel servo-assisted brakes were also specified, though some initial US models lacked front brakes. Differences between the US and UK models included available wheelbases — both were specified with the same 143? in (3644.9 mm) base length, but the UK long-wheelbase model was longer at 150? (3822.7 mm) than the 146? in (3721.1 mm) American version. Other differences included the transmission, with UK models using a 4-speed and US models using a centre change 3-speed manual transmission, both with a single dry-plate clutch. UK models were built at Rolls-Royces' Derby factory, while US Phantoms were built in Springfield, Massachusetts. LC '46 Ford It all looks so familiar. That's because I had a '46 Ford when I was in college. I spent a lot of time hanging on to a steering wheel like that. The clock on the left, the four gauges in a row, the bullseye brake and clutch pedals, the column-mounted gear shift . . . I can almost hear the rumble of that old flat-head V8. It was a good car. The only repairs it needed in about two years was stuff like new tires and brakes. I think I replaced one fuel pump, but that was a common problem on Fords of that period. Grand Geyser Group Yellowstone National Park, September 2003 We were fortunate enough to see an eruption of Grand Geyser, the tallest predictable geyser in Yellowstone. Its eruptions can reach a height of 200 feet, and it erupts in a series of multiple bursts, anywhere from 1 to 4 at a time. There are two other smaller geysers (Vent and Turban) tied to Grand erupting in this photo as well. Geyser There is a geyser on an abandoned ranch near San Rafael Road south of Green River. It wasn't geysing when we were there, so I just took some shots of the colorful collection pool. I reduced the saturation in processing because it was just too much. The geyser, by the way, was created during an attempt to drill a well. there you go, Robert This is how my test ion chamber setup looked like. Chamber is in the center, covered with Al foil to shield the circuitry, amplifier is in the back (not visible). Microammeter shows the actual chamber current, right voltmeter is for amp supply voltage, left was measuring the chamber potential (usually -48V) but on this pic it's not connected i think. The source is a 80 gram piece of uranium ore enclosed in the thick wall lead container. The test source was sufficient to max out the range (over 200uA) and still recorded over 100uA at 10cm from the chamber. In this version, chamber voltage was supplied by a charged electrolytic capacitor (470u) which, because of virtually no current consumption, lasted for about a day of experiments. Later it was replaced by a DC-DC voltage converter (multistage charge pump). Sorry for the bad quality pic but it was made using the focusfree HP idiotcamera. The setup is dismantled in boxes in the basement, i will bring it back to life when i move to a new place (in about a month). VS pumps Display of our VS verticle multistage pumps. Hydrogen generation The funny looking washing machine in the frame is actually the next generation of hydrogen generators that will produce the lifting gas for most of the 31 weather balloon stations across Canada. This is one of two in use currently with more to come over the next few years. The unit uses electrolysis to break the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen is vented to the outside and the hydrogen is pumped into a holding tank for later use. Since hydrogen is explosive between a 4% and 74% concentration by volume in air, there are numerous safety devices built into the unit to shut it down should such concentrations be detected. The world's helium supply is dwindling and prices are skyrocketing so we need the only readily available alternative. Jan 13, 2010. Bread Rolls Ok, so not a very exciting shot but these bread rolls were delicious. They were served with the mixture of oil & balsamic vinegar.... d e l i c i o u s! I love bread, especially rolls like these. I don't put any butter on them but instead enjoy tearing them up and munching on the small pieces. Diabetes365 Day 13 - 102307 I always carry my current vial of Humalog in my kit. Insulin is fine at room temperature for awhile; I think the manufacturers recommend keeping it for no longer than 30 days but I don't pay attention to that. I keep it in my kit until it's finished and haven't had any problems, even during the summer months. Filling reservoirs is by far my least favorite part of pumping. I'd rather stick a dozen Silhouettes into myself than fill a reservoir. When I see that mine is running low I try to fill another one in advance so I don't have to rush. I then stash the insulin vial, full reservoir, plunger & connector in the Humalog box and put that in my bag along with my other everyday supplies. latest and greatest technology 4 years ago (March 30, 2005) we were sent to Chicago's Children's Hospital as Calli was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. We've come a long way. This has been brought to my attention and how perfect after I received a letter from Calli's current pump manufacturer, that they will no longer be in the insulin pump business. This would save the 5-6 daily finger pokes that she currently does and have such a HUGE benefit of always knowing what your blood sugar is! Wow! Fireside Home Construction | 2010 EVHA Silver Award Winner Fireside Homes, according to the EVHA judges, "Appears to be doing everything it can (that is economically feasible) to design, build, and market an excellent home." The company's attention to detail in site planning, pre-construction energy analyses, and the construction process resulted in an exceptionally tight home and a noteworthy HERS index. The builder systematically incorporated a variety of energy-efficient technologies—ICFs, SIPs, a geothermal heat pump, heat recovery ventilation, spray foam insulation, and high efficiency lighting—into a single, high-performance package. Chitty cabin This cabin was built in 2009. It has a number of sustainable and energy efficient features including icynene insulation, aerated concrete block foundation and conditioned crawlspace, high efficiency heat pump, and a high efficiency hot water heater. Many of the products used in the cabin were locally produced, including the log package, fireplace mantle and trim, wood for cabinets and countertops, as well as the stone for the fireplace. Many of these items came from the homeowner's property. It is hard not to smile around Carl 08317 4:40 PM Tompkins Square Park: Lower East Side, New York. Today, as often happens, Lt. Corcoran told a drinker to get out of the park. And, Carl, ever the gentleman, complied with humor and a genteel wit. Who is Carl? Carl was born in a different world, the New York of 1946 - the last days of the waterfront of Anna Christie, the world of bargies and a community who lived in sight of the city but a world away. As Carl tells it, his mother had a hard menopause, and in order to survive, his father retreated to a job on a Trap Rock Scow, a barge towed from up the Hudson River to an anchorage off Staten Island. Carl was then the sole recipient of his mother's temper, so in an act of kindness his father took him, just before puberty, to live in the aft cabin of a scow, a community of a few thousand deck hands living in a floating village anchored off the narrows. One can still see barges moored at Robin's reef, in the lee of Kitty's light, just before the ferryboat reaches Staten Island. "My father took some two by fours and made a bunk for me, above his. I had a porthole, it was a beautiful view. I became quite a seaman, I might not have been able to splice a hawser, but I was a good sailor." He and his father, worked as did as the other deck hands of the scows, breaking ice off the lines and bending stiff lines, salting the decks, and sweating in the summers. "I lived the life before the mast, so to speak... we had no mast." He suffered through puberty, gazing at the city from the island of scows which bumped against each other at the anchorage, separated by truck tire fenders. On occasion he and his father went ashore in a rubber dingy. In the winter they had a Franklin coal stove, but often it gave too much heat, so they cooked over two hand pumped gas primus stoves. "The company even gave us an ice box, but it was no good to us, they did not give us ice!" Rain, fog, sleet and storm, fair weather or foul, they worked the scow, living on the end of a tug boat's tow line, or anchored in the upper river or lower harbor around the stake boat, permanently chained to the anchorage -- the center of the scow sailor's community. Then one day, that world died. The tug boat companies tore the cabins off the scows and had their own crews take over. A world ended, and tug boat men had to board scows in rough weather, sometimes paying for the new deal with their lives. And so, the 1950s turned into the 1960s, and there was no place for the scow sailors of New York. Tonight, this gentleman, who still dreams of life with his father in the cozy cabin of the Trap Rock Scow, sat in the park confronted by the police car. Lt. Corcran commented on his long hair. "Yes, you are right, I do need a hair cut. Thank you for the concern... I will get a hair cut... Yes, I will not lie to you, I AM drunk. I hope you only give me a ticket, as I don't have my ID with me today. I have to leave the park as well? Well, I suppose I do if I need to get a hair cut... So, I will leave ... and rape a barber." This brought laughter to the two officers out side the car, I could not see Lt. Corcoran response ... and Carl rose and walked slowly out of the park. Few in our neighborhood know where his journey started. Barge Grave yard As often happens, Lt. Corcoran told a drinker to get out of the park. SMALL FISH TANK PUMP. SMALL FISH
Small fish tank pump. Constant pressure water pump. Battery operated fountain pump Small Fish Tank Pump
Web shots 08123 A man can feel small in these mountains. Taken on a trip to the Miracle Mile in Wyoming on the last weekend in March of 08 with a few of my pals. The fishing was no good because of the weather but it created ideal conditions for me. So this place is somewhere my family has been taking me forever. My grandparents have a little Airstream trailer that sits up at the river year round. Propane heat, oven and stove. Roughing it, with a little comfort mixed in. Conditions can be pretty rough, both in summer and winter.....and in March! It's a long way out on dirt roads that see VERY little activity. If you break down it could be a day before you see anyone. On this trip we were reminded of just how vulnerable we as humans are to nature. On Sunday, the day we planned to leave, we awoke to a little snow on the ground and pretty cold temperatures. It really wasn't sticking to the ground though. The boys weren't afraid and they tried their luck at the fishing again that morning. After a few hours they called it quits and we started to pack up and clean the trailer. My buddy really wanted to try and land a fish in the tough conditions so he went down to the river to try one last time before we headed home. I joined him, to try and take a few photos of him fishing in the snow. As soon as we got to the river the snow picked up a little. Then a lot. He had barely gotten himself into the freezing cold water before he turned around and looked at me like, "Holy $%@#, we should probably get out of here!" And we did. We locked up the trailer and hit the road. Now my buddies were in a 4 wheel drive Jeep and I was in a front wheel drive Altima. No chains. We drove in on dry roads and we were leaving in blizzard conditions. There are a few different roads leading out of the Mile and I had to choose which one to take. One road takes you up and over a pass but once you get over the pass the roads are paved and it's the shortest route. The other way is pretty flat but it's out on the plains and many times the road drifts over and it's hard to see where the road is. Sometimes the drifts are 10 feet tall and then you're screwed, for lack of a better term. So I thought we'd try our luck at the pass. Yeah, not so much. The first major hill and my car started spinning about three quarters of the way up. Luckily we hadn't gone down that road long before we realized it was not an option. We turned around, or rather my car did a donut and turned me around and we headed the other way. I've driven in white out conditions before but nothing prepared me for the journey I, and my trusty friends, would take. Just like I suspected the road was full of drifts and with the blizzard conditions visibility was next to nothing. For two and a half hours I followed a few little bushes sticking out of the road hoping that I was on the right path. Honestly it was hard to see if I was on the road or out in the prairie. White as white could be. We made it off of the dirt roads and to a little town called Hanna. Now if you've ever been to Wyoming you know that outside of a few of the "major" cities, EVERYTHING closes down at 6pm on a Sunday. We rolled into town about 5:55. Just enough time for me to get a pack of smokes at the grocery store and trust me I needed them. The folks at the store told us EVERY road out of Hanna was closed. Hanna has NO motels. None. I was pretty sure I was sleeping in my car that night cuddled up to my furry dog. At this point we needed gas too. I always fill my tank before I head out on the dirt roads because I know what can happen. No real gas stations in Hanna but they do have a few pumps that take a credit card. That works, if only the pumps worked. No luck. So we decided to drive a few more miles to Interstate 80 because we figured that was our best option. Luckily the highway ramp wasn't closed and we decided to press our luck and try and get to Laramie which was about 70 miles away. Laramie was the only gas or lodging available. I had less than a quarter tank. Actually I-80 was the best driving conditions we saw but that really isn't saying much. Visibility was a little better though. We made it to Laramie, and gas, and we were again told that all roads out of Laramie were closed. Hundred of semis, cars and trucks sat at on-ramps around Laramie. We decided to call Wyoming Dep't of Transportation to see if Highway 287 was open. They said yes but probably not for long. We made it out of Laramie and got past the gates before they closed them. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or not, looking back. By now it was dark, very cold, and the wind was blowing like crazy. My buddy took the lead because he had the 4 wheel drive and better headlights. The snow was whipping around and making it really hard to see. We had to drive a little ways, find a road marker, drive a little more till w draining fish diversion tank The holding tank had a screen tower that the fish bucket can be lowered and raised in. At the bottom of the tank is a drain to remove water. The bucket is lowered to the bottom of the screen tower. Most of the water is then released out the drain while the screen tower is retains the fish and a small amount of water. The screen tower is the lifted a few inches and all the fish fall into the bucket. After all this the bucket can be raised and the fish collected.
