This is how my test ion chamber setup looked like.
Chamber is in the center, covered with Al foil to shield the
circuitry, amplifier is in the back (not visible). Microammeter shows the actual chamber current, right voltmeter is for amp supply voltage, left was measuring the chamber potential (usually -48V) but on this pic it's not connected i think. The source is a 80 gram piece of uranium ore enclosed in the thick wall lead container.
The test source was sufficient to max out the range (over 200uA) and still recorded over 100uA at 10cm from the chamber.
In this version, chamber voltage was supplied by a charged electrolytic capacitor (470u) which, because of virtually no current consumption, lasted for about a day of experiments. Later it was replaced by a DC-DC voltage converter (multistage charge pump).

The setup is dismantled in boxes in the basement, i will bring it back to life when i move to a new place (in about a month).
