How To Succeed in Business
I took a picture of Robert Morse who played J. Pierpont Finch in the 1967 film adaption. Then I took a picture of Daniel Radcliffe who plays the same character in the Broadway revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." I don't own the rights to either original I simply combined them together in my own way.

Dr. J. O'Neill Eddy House
Left: This is the front of the house facing the Ohio River as seen today. About ten years ago a tree had crashed against the right side and roof during a storm causing heavy damage that was never repaired.
Top right: A photo of what the house looked like in its prime. I took the shot from a book on Tyler County West Virginia owned by a neighbor who lives next to the old home.
Center right: The left side of the house is still fairly intact.
Bottom right: The front entrance taken from the top step that is strangled in weeds. It is thought that this home was built around 1880.
A condensed history:
J. O'Neill was the youngest of eight sons born to Jane and Benjamin Eddy of Newport Ohio in 1882. J.O'Neill and three of his brothers became doctors and together opened an office in St. Marys West Virginia. J.O'Neill was one of the first people in the community to own an automobile with which he went to see his patients day or night in any kind of weather. In 1907 he married Stella Nay. They had two children, Hilda Jane in 1908, and Edward Blake in 1910. The family moved to Friendly in 1915 and occupied this home.
The influenza epidemic of 1917-18 took its tool on the health of J.O'Neill leaving him with a weakened heart. He passed away from it in 1931. Stella had acquired an indepth medical knowledge and served the area as a licensed midwife. She was active in school, lodge and church affairs and served on the State Senatorial Committee and continued her endeavors after J.O'Neill's death. In 1936 Stella was elected mayor of Friendly with an all woman council, the first woman in West Virginia to be so honored.
Hilda Eddy taught school in Tyler County, married Chester Webb of Friendly, gave birth to a daughter in 1946, and moved to Dayton Ohio. Chester worked at Wright Field and died in 1961. Hilda continued to teach in the Dayton schools, until she retired, then moved to Florida. She died in 1981.
Edward Blake Eddy returned from the army at the end of WWII and married Virginia Haught Bowen. They had one daughter together and two children from a previous marriage (Virginia's). Edward became the mayor of Friendly 30 years after his mother. He died in 1970.

Agfa Isolette III
My Agfa Isolette III
Produced c1960 Agfa Germany
Film type 120
Picture size 6x6
Lens coated Apotar (3 element Apochromatic Anastigmat) 85mm f4.5
Shutter speeds B, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 300 and switch for T
Exposure meter none
The Isolette III has an uncoupled rangefinder. There is a small dial on the top of the camera that you turn while peering through the rangefinder window. When the image is in focus, you read the distance from the dial and then set the lens to that same distance.
Next, set your aperture and shutter speed, tension the Pronto and press the shutter release to take your photo.
The Apotar is an average lens -- a bit better than most triplets and like most triplets get better when stopped down to f/8 or f/11.
The exterior of the camera is in lovely condition. However, there is a small repair to the bellows, which isn't unusual with the Agfa folders. The most common problems with many of the Agfa cameras are the use of the plastic bellows, which developed pinholes in the corners, and hardened lubricant in the helicals and other gears that made the lens often very difficult or impossible to turn.
The textured body covering on the Isolette III is very attractive and makes the camera easy to hold.
The back has a small sliding door that shows the frame number that is printed on the film's paper backing. Remember to close the door after advancing the film. Next to the film advance knob and just ahead of the shutter release is a small hole in the top plate. Under that is an indicator that tells the photographer if the film has been advanced. If it shows red, the film must be wound on. If it's clear, you're clear to shoot. This is opposite the Zeiss Ikon cameras, so I generally don't put both in the bag for a day of shooting.
Agfa did a nice job with the Isolette III. It's rounded shoulders and mostly symmetrical top plate are quite attractive. Once serviced, the Isolette III is a good camera to use and to show off to others.
*important.. It's not expensive!!! ... NOT more than 40 euros on ebay :P
My S5's Bad Pixels
This shot was ISO 200 with a 1 second exposure. I had to do some processing to make them all show so well. But there are 16 bad pixels here, not counting the light leak in the left corner. I marked the most annoying red one near the middle with a larger box. That is the only one I have ever cloned out in my photos. Luckily though, it seems to have gone away. The rest aren't noticeable with shorter exposures and ISO that I normally shoot at.
I sest don't go looking for bad pixels since everyone will probably find at least a few and be disappointed. All digital cameras have them or develop them over time. There are different types of bad pixels, hot pixels and dead pixels. Hot pixels may not always show up depending on temperature, exposure length, and ISO. Some come out in color, some white, and I think some can be black. And some only show up in longer exposures. Higher ISOs can bring them out too.
Unless they are right in the middle and/or visible in all your shots, they aren't a big problem. They won't affect prints and aren't visible on screen unless you view at greater than 100%.
If they are annoying you and especially if you have any other problems with your camera, I would send it in. But check whether bad pixels are covered under warranty. My one year warranty is about up so mine will be making the trip to Canon soon. My orientation sensor has been strange since I first got it, but I never wanted to be without it. And it could certainly use a cleaning. Now that I have the SLR I can stand to be without it for a while.

Transom Repair Cost
The Sad State of English Martyrs
Images in snow-covered Hillmorton on Boxing day 2010.
English Martyrs main church building remains closed due to the structural failure of parts of the west window, the transoms seem to be too weak to carry the heavy resin-bonded dalle de verre stained glass panels, one of which fell in April 2010 as a result (Masses are currently being held in the adjoining church hall).
Other panels are bowing in this and one other window due to the weight problem, whilst a few pieces of glass have fallen as a result of thermal expansion and contraction, again mainly on the west side. Sadly few people value these impressive windows enough to accept the huge cost of repairing them, thus their destruction seems likely at some point in order to re-open the church, a tragedy to lose such a rare large scale work.
I hope that the beautiful transom above the entrance can be restored when this building is renovated as part of the Farish Street entertainment district. It's my understanding that the transom was intact until recently.

PANGÚR BÁN & CASHEL ABBEY
Ta cat ban sa ghriangraf seo – smaoinim ar an seandan ; PANGUR BAN
There’s a white cat in this photo – I think of the old poem ; WHITE PANGUR
MISE agus Pangur ban,
ceachtar againn lena shan-dhan:
bionn a mheanma-san le seilg,
mo mheanma fein i mo shain-cheird.
Caraimse fos, fearr gach clu
ag mo leabhran, ag tuiscint go dicheallach;
nil se formadach liom, Pangur ban:
carann se fein a mhac-dhan.
Nuair a bhimid, sceal gan scis,
inar teach, sinn araon go haonarach,
ta cluiche eigriochta againn,
rud a dtugaimid ar mbeartaiocht do.
De ghnath, ar uairantaibh, tar eis greasaibh galacha
gleanann luch ina lion-san;
agus me, titeann i mo lion fein
dli doraidh is deacair a thuiscint.
Greamaionn se i bhfraigh fail
a rosc geal comhlan;
greamaim fein i bhfeighe an fheasa
mo rosc reil, ce go bhfuil se an-lag.
Ta athas air a dhul go tapa
nuair a ghleanann luch ina chrub ghear;
nuair a thugaim ceist dhoraidh dhil
ta athas ormsa fein.
Ce go mbeimis go deimhin ar uaireantaibh
ni bhodhraimid a cheile:
is maith le ceachtar a dhan;
subhaigh gach aon futhu.
Is e fein maistir do
na hoibre a dheineann se gach aon la;
a thabhairt doraidh do shoileireacht
is i m obair fein.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION – not by me!
I and Pangur Ban my Cat
Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight
Hunting words I sit all night
Better far than praise of men
‘Tis to sit with book and pen;
Pangur bears me no ill will,
He too plies his simple skill.
‘ Tis a merry thing to see
At our tasks how glad are we,
When at home we sit and find
Entertainment to our mind.
Oftentimes a mouse will stray
In the hero Pangur’s way;
Oftentimes my keen thought set
Takes a meaning in its net.
‘ Gainst the wall he sets his eye
Full and fierce and sharp and sly;
‘ Gainst the wall of knowledge I
All my little wisdom try.
When a mouse darts from its den,
O how glad is Pangur then!
O what gladness do I prove
When I solve the doubts I love!
So in peace our tasks we ply,
Pangur Ban, my cat, and I;
In our arts we find our bliss,
I have mine and he has his.
Practice every day has made
Pangur perfect in his trade;
I get wisdom day and night
Turning darkness into light.
CASHEL ABBEY (Ambrose Colman, O.P.)
FOUNDED in 1243 by David Mac Kelly, archbishop of Cashel, "who while dean of Cashel joined the Dominicans of Cork as a member of the Order and out of that community supplied with members a little monastery which he had built at Cashel. Ware.
1250. June 13. The King writes to the archbishop of Dublin begging that the Crusade be preached in Ireland. He also writes to the archbishop of Cashel and adds that the Pope's letters, which Walter Maunsel is bringing to the archbishop, are to be placed after their publication, in the custody of the Friars Preachers of Cashel.
1256, June 30. A provincial chapter was held here. Provincial chapters were held here in 1289 and 1307.
1394, July 15. John O'Grady, archbishop of Cashel, was buried in this abbey.
1480. An accidental fire having destroyed the abbey, it was re- built by John Cantwell, the archbishop, who was constituted both patron and founder, by an instrument dated at Limerick, about 1480, and by the same instrument it was declared that he and all assisting him in the good work would be partakers of all the suffrages of the Order in Ireland.
The document purports to emanate from John Frickery, vicar-general of the Dominican Order in Ireland, William Duff de Burgo, prior of the house, and the community itself.
1535. Edward Brown, the prior, on the vigil of Easter, demised to Peter O'Cuil, priest, a messuage of Cashel for the term of sixty years, at the annual rent of six shillings and eight pence, Irish; and on April n, 1536, the said Edward demised to Walter Fleming of Cashel, two messuages and two acres, with their, appurtenances in the said town, for the term of sixty years, at the annual rent of sixteen pence; on April 8, 1540, the said Edward "surrendered" this friary, containing a church and belfry, a dormitory, a chamber with two cellars, a cemetery, two orchards, and two parks or gardens containing two acres, etc., etc.
1543, May 5. Grant to Walter Fleming, of Cashel, merchant, for 46. of the site of the monastery of Friars Preachers of Cashel.
1544, Mar. 8. This friary (tithes excepted), with its appurtenances, and four gardens in Cashel, were granted for ever to Walter Fleming, in capite, at the annual rent of two shillings and sixpence, Irish money.
In 1756 there were five fathers attached to the convent of Cashel, but only one in 1800. The death of a Father Cantwell is mentioned in the obits in 1843. The last Dominican of Cashel was Father Conway, who was still there in 1850.
THB FRIARS OF CASHEL(John O’Heyne, O.P.)
In County Tipperary is a very ancient city called Cashel, which is an archiepiscopal see and the metropolis of all Munster. In this city there is a Dominican abbey, b
This is your story Gage.
[18:05] Unknown Pushes open the door, a gush of heat heralding his entrance more than the sound offered by the half broken piece of wood. "I expected a trap." His voice wouldn't ever lift above a whisper, throat raspy and deep like an infinite hollow.
[18:07] Gage arches a brow behind her dark glasses, a hint of a bruise peeking out, "How do you know I didnt rigt he place to blow" and shrugs with one shoulder, "Ya dont"
[18:08] Unknown "Because if you do," he'd glance to the door - sword in it's sheathed form resting by his side, "Then you will lose permenantly all hopes of finding your Alpha." A low cough came forth from behind the static hiss of the mask, his side turning to face her as he looked 'pon the door. "I'm not here to fight. I never was."
[18:11] Gage regards the stranger with narrowed, her gaze assessing but she makes no move but to roll her tense neck, "I'm tired of being played with...what do you want?"
[18:15] Unknown "An end," were the only words to grace his lips for a long time. "The Machines aren't dead yet. Neither of them." Staring as ever to the door - his body remained unflinching. Stoic in tone and stance. "They're still about. They were what hit the den." Shifting a moment he'd glance over to her again, "They're what killed off the Alphas." Stepping closer he'd lift his voice up past the whisper, "They're what destroyed your home. And they won't stop. If you destroy one the other will find it and repair it. Unless you stop them both you will be stuck in this endless cycle." Pulling out some documents he'd thrust them at her. Photos of the two machines - fully operational. "They won't stop until the packs eradicated. The bodys will pile up in the ruins more and more. But this is what needs to happen. The pack needs to find itself. And you need to lead them against the machines. Not Aid. Not Ayr. Not shiro or lillian. You."
[18:21] Gage flicks her gaze down to the photos then turns her head away, the curtain of her hair obscuring her face. She was tired, sore and pissed off at herself and for some reason she didnt feel threatened by the stranger...maybe she was still in shock...? "..me..? " She snorts a hint of self loothing slipping into her voice. "If you hadn't noticed... I got my ass handed to me last night..I'm not in any condition phyically or mental to take on those beasts"
[18:24] Unknown "This is all how it must go. The pack must realize for themselves they hold the power. You must lead them where others cannot." Keeping his eyes upon her he would step ever closer, the voice dropping one more pitch into a low booming tone. "You must teach them to have faith in themselves and others. Your alpha is not as you think he is. Nor is the other one. And you must have faith in each other as a priest does God. When told: Jesus is dead. A holy man retorts: But he is reborn. Faith is what unifies. Hope is what consolodates. Have both and you are unstoppable."
[18:31] Gage bodies tenses as the stranger steps closer and she pulls herself from the ancient couch with a wince to back across the room, "I have no who you are or who you got my cell number..how can I trust a single thing you say? I lost the ability to hope a long time ago..the last twenty four hours have really sunk that fact in for me so don't preach to me..."
[18:34] Unknown "Faith." He'd spit out that single word - letting it's concept in all it's potency and intrinsic meanings float around the room. "They're coming back, tonight. I am sure of it. You can't escape them. Nor can the pack. You've tried fighting with weaponry. You realize you can't shoot them to death. You can't cut them open. You can blow them up but they will repair. What else do you have left but Hope? You have nothing they cannot walk through. But hope and faith. Trust in your Elders and in yourself." Stepping back and away he'd move to the door - gripping the handle. "They're not human. They don't have feelings. But you do. Emotions can drive up buildings or rip through walls. Concrete is no obstacle to a heart full of emotion. Intent. Think about it." Pushing open the door he'd step out into the night - letting the door fall shut with a soft click.

How To Repair Hard Disk
Another trip to Home Depot. I got a little magnetic bowl - bigger than the 2 I got from Rockler, but they've been so handy so far (and always full :). I also bought a second pair of these kneepads. The ones I bought months ago were missing one strap. I figured by now it would be weird to go back with an unused pair months later and claim a missing strap, so I just bought a new set, took a strap off it and put it on my old, opened, but unused set, and later returned these as "missing a strap." It's not true, but it is true, and the returns lady didn't see anything weird about a return from the day before, nor did she ask any questions. I just didn't want to have to explain why I hadn't returned the other defective pair after something like 3 months (lazy/busy).
Oh, and I completely screwed up cutting the last rod on the last door for the 2-point latching system. I had the rod extended when I marked the pieces, instead of retracted, so I cut them way short. I flopped around on the floor in agony - this was the last thing to do! - and thought and thought about how to repair it. The rods are pretty flush with the door, so I couldn't really build any armature to connect on more rods from the scrap cutoffs. I wasn't really going to be able to modify the rods. It took everything my 12" miter saw and metal cutting disc had to get through that hard steel. The only thing I could think of was rod couplings (orange bag), cutting the rods to about half their incorrect length, threading them, and 2 scrap cutoffs with a die (Irwin tap & die set at top), and screwing them together, remarking them, and cutting them to the proper length this time.
First repair panel held in place with magnets salvaged from old hard disk drives. You won't believe how strong they are. Just don't try MIG welding too close to one, it's like having no gas. Nasty.

Plastic Bag / Ramin Bahrani
Ramin Bahrani's (US) short-film "Plastic Bag" is about an unhappy love of a plastic bag and its owner - and about the increasing pollution of our planet. After an adventurous odyssey around the globe and thousands of kilometers away from the next coast, the bag meets tens of millions of other plastic items in an area called Great Pacific Garbage Patch. With impressive pictures Ramin Bahrani brings home to us the unelievable dimensions of today's environmental pollution.

Finished Garage Facade--New Window and Lights
Late Oct, 2010. Note pumpkin on step. Note new driveway also. We will be adding a gray border along driveway next spring.
Center light on garage has sensor and will aid Steve when working in yard, auto repair, etc. Lights at sides of garage door are Kenroy Home slate-backed hallogen lights, primarily for ambiance. We chose the tile backing for house number & wood duck silhouette to match the slate. Not quite white.
Window is unopenable Anderson window to match the ones in south-facing bedroom, around the corner. Goal in adding window was to enhance the extra space at right side of garage door. Extra light in garage is a "plus" but we will be putting a curtain in to hide possessions from snoops. I have a piece of the same temp fabric as is in use in kitchen for this space.
Garage door will be gray.
Wood duck motif over door looks good, doesn't it?
Photo taken just after high-wind rainstorm that set records for low barometer. Many sticks everywhere. Steve and Drake have just headed to Montana to hunt birds, again.
Easter Day 2011 April 24: Seeing this photo makes me very grateful that Mike Fleischaker from MBF Concrete called me last October to say that he had an opening in his calendar before frost season arrived...did I want it? I was home alone and didn't know if I should say yes but I did. Having a shovelable driveway during this terrifically snowy winter was a wonderful thing. I keep remembering the winter before, when we had only straw thrown about and some sand to keep our feet "clean" throughout the winter in the construction zone and we jumped on a pair of piled wooden palettes to get to the top step at front door.
We regret that our original plan to move over the garage door could not be fulfilled but we think this looks decent. Gotta keep cars away from the left side of the garage door to prevent denting the siding with an opening car door. We'll install a "sidewalk" alongside the house under this window to indicate to drivers to keep right of it.
