Cassin's Finch Male FEB03

Cassin's Finches appeared erratically some winters. They even nested nearby a couple of summers, but then would disappear for two years at a time. A rather poor image, as it was digiscoped through windows of our home in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. It nicely illustrates the straight culmen, the crest and the color differential between head and breast.

Light-Horse Harry Lee and the Legacy of the American Revolution

Light-Horse Harry Lee and the Legacy of the American Revolution

Soldier, statesman, landowner, historian of the young republic, and member of one of the best Virginian families - Henry Lee endeavoured throughout his life to realise his dream of a free and prosperous America. His career embodied the visionary promises that inspired the American Revolution, as well as the inability of the revolutionary generation to put all its ideals into practice. Charles Royster shows how, both during the war and afterward, Lee continually risked himself in the service of his vision and how he repeatedly failed to win the victories he sought. This book was first published in 1981 by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., and has already won wide critical acclaim. It will appeal to general readers as well as students of American history.

Be'er Sheva, Ottoman cavalry parade

Be'er Sheva, Ottoman cavalry parade

Picture taken by a German photographer probably 1916 who was attached to German Flying Detachment 300 (Fliegerabteilung 300), part of the German Expeditionary Corps (Asienkorps). The picture probably shows a parade for Jemal Pasha during his inspection before the second advance against the Suez Canal on the central square.

Here is some background history:
Human settlement in the area date from the Copper Age. The region has probably been inhabited since the 4th millennium BC. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries.
Israelites founded the city of Be’er Sheva during the 10th century BC after the land was conquered by King David (Tel Be’er Sheva). The site was probably chosen due to the abundance of water. According to the Bible, the wells were dug by Abraham and Issac. Be’er Sheva is mentioned several times in the Bible. Tel Be’er Sheva is part of the Israeli UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Following the Babylonian conquest and subsequent enslavement of many Israelites, the town was abandoned but resettled after the slaves returned from Babylon.
During the Roman and later Byzantine periods, the town served as a front-line defense against Nabatean attacks. The last inhabitants of Tel Be'er-Sheva were the Byzantines, who abandoned the city during the Arab conquest of Palestine in the 7th century.

The Ottomans, who had controlled Palestine since the 16th century, took no interest in Be’er Sheva until the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, Be’er Sheva was portrayed by European pilgrims as a barren stretch of land with a well and a handful of Bedouins living nearby. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Ottomans built a police station in Be’er Sheva.
A town plan was created by a Swiss and a German architect with a grid street pattern. Most of the residents at the time were Arabs from Hebron and the Gaza area, although Jews also began settling in the city.

In Autumn 1914, the Germans and Ottoman planned an advance against the Suez canal under Ottoman commander Ali Fuad Bey and German chief of staff of the Ottoman VIII. Army Kress von Kressenstein. Be’er Sheva was chosen as main back area for the German and Ottoman troops due to its abundance of water. The supply for the troops had to be transported from Damascus via Nablus and Jerusalem on camel caravans which was absolutely insufficient. By early October 1914 there was no road existing to connect Jerusalem with Be’er Sheva. In January 1915, the German-Ottoman military headquarter for the Suez expedition was estabilshed in Be’er Sheva. At about the same time, works started to build a road from Hebron to Be’er Sheva in order to improve infrastructure and supply problems. Further, in January 1915, the Ottomans built a military railroad from the Hejaz line (connection Afula/Sileh to Dera’a) to Be’er Sheva.

The first expedition against the Suez canal started on January 15 until February 13, 1915. The mixed German-Ottoman troops of approx. 25.000 men reached the canal but were not able to hold their positions mainly due to insufficient supply. Afterwards, a new expedition was planned and preparations were made. The railway was extended until Be’er Sheva and the train station was inaugurated on October 30, 1915. The celebration was attended by the Turkish army commander Jemal (Djemal) Pasha. The line was later extended to Hafir el Auja. By January 1916, the Ottomans had errected army repairshops. Earlier, all major repairs had to be made in Jaffa or Jerusalem. Further, a hospital was build in Be’er Sheva where 10 Kaiserwerth deaconesses were working. Two German nurses were working in the soldier’s home in the city. In March 1916 Enver Pasha was visiting the troops in Be’er Sheva and he used the occasion to inaugurate the new train station in Asluj.

In April 1916, the German flying detachment (Fliegerabteilung) 300 arrived in Be’er Sheva and in mid April an Austrian/Hungarian artillery division. Both units were inspected by Jemal Pasha in end of May 1916. An airfield was build in Be’er sheva which was already attacked by British planes in June 1916. On Juli 4, the Austrian/German and Ottoman troops left Be’er Sheva for El Arish as collecting point for the second advance against the Suez canal. The attack started on August 3 with approx. 16.000 men and lasted until August 14 (Battle of Romani).

The Allied forces with superior material and supply gained more and more ground (conquering Sinai). Due to the Allied pressure, El Arish was abandoned in Mid December 1916 and the German planes were removed from Be’er Sheva to Ramle in January 1917. The Allied started to attack Gaza in February 1917. In order to stabilize the front, Kressenstein draw its remaining troops from the Sinai back to Be’er Sheva in March 1917. Be’er Sheva was considered the gate to Jerusalem. By September 1917, more and more troops were stationed in Be’er Sheva such as the 3rd Ottoman Cavalry Division and the 27th Infantry Division under

The Lighthorsemen (Import)

In original English with optional Chinese and English subtitles can be turned off. On screen menus are in English and Chinese and are easy to use. Director: Simon Wincer. Cast: Jon Blake, Peter Phelps, Tony Bonner, Bill Kerr, John Walton, Sigrid Thorton. The following review was written for the VHS release: One of the great cavalry charges in history, September 16, 2005 Reviewer: Patrick J. McNamara (New York) - If you liked "Gallipoli" and "Breaker Morant," you should try this movie. A friend recommended it, and though it's a bit hard to find, it's worth the search. Like "Gallipoli," its focus is on an idealistic young man who volunteers to fight in World War I as part of the Lighthorsemen, an Australian cavalry unit that served in the Middle East . Along the way, he meets a young British nurse and they fall in love. In the meanwhile, the Lighthorsemen are ordered to attack an enemy fortress in the middle of the desert. Based on a real incident, the cavalry charge on Beersheba in 1917 was among the last in history, and it was a success. That charge is the highlight of this movie, and it is marvelously done! It's every bit as good, and as stirring, as the one in "The Charge of the Light Brigade" in 1936. Unlike Gallipoli, this movie is not a downer. It has a happy ending, proving that even if World War I was a depressing moment in world history, not all World War I movies have to be depressing. Recommended!

The Badjaos were once a proud people who impressed the world with their diving skills. With nothing but daggers between their lips; with their bare eyes, without any diving equipment, they could scour the farthest, darkest depths of the seas and come back with the most beautiful pearls. But that seems a thing of the past for the Badjaos, who can now be seen scattered throughout the archipelago, many of them thousands of kilometers away from their native Mindanao, begging for alms. Some of them have even reached as far as Baguio City (246 kms. north of Manila), pleading for mercy and a few coins from passersby. They are now a far cry from the proud tribe that they used to be.

Long Lunch after

The rains came down. it seemed water was pouring from the skies from every direction. Everyone scrambled for cover into the stores and under awnings. Musicians and the sound man dove to cover their equipment because dispite canopies water was everywhere. Aside from that worry everyone was still having a ball talking with each other, lauging and shopping. I was running around in bare feet (like others), getting soaked taking the last of the garbage off the tables.

It was so much fun and after the dry summer the rain was still welcome too.

A wonderful day enjoyed by all it seems.

historical fencing equipment - The Dueling

The Dueling Sword

The Dueling Sword

Originally published in 1884, Claude La Marche's L'Epee was the first book ever written on the use of the epee, the dueling sword of the 19th century. The book in no way deals with the modern Olympic sport of epee fencing—rather, it covers in a passionate narrative style the rituals and techniques of combat dueling with the sword, "the war of surprises" that is the epee bout.

This first English translation of La Marche's masterpiece by fencing expert Brian House, The Dueling Sword delivers not only a valuable treatise on historical sword fighting but extraordinary insights into the psychological stress of individual combat. La Marche writes, "the art of the epee is essentially a psychological art," and in his book he provides a comprehensive, integrated system for producing stress in the opponent and conditioning one's self to stress during a duel. Through detailed instruction in the guards, attacks, parries, ripostes, and counters, La Marche drives the reader toward the goal of practical combative fencing: the well-directed, surprising thrust to the opponent's body.

The Dueling Sword is a pioneering work in the study of human psychology under stress and a fascinating manual on the traditional combat duel, "a meeting whose outcome is without appeal."

Operation Long Horn

Operation Long Horn

Operation Long Horn The close of World War II brought new tensions to America that led to the Cold War. Under fear of communism and nuclear assault, the U.S. Army and Air Force simulated a war in one of the largest maneuvers ever to be staged on American soil. Called Operation Long Horn, the simulation included thwarting an invasion and recovering from an atomic attack.
To carry out the mock war, which began in late March 1952, ranchers between Waco and San Angelo signed easements to their land. Several Lometa-area ranches became sites of battles and campgrounds as more than 115,000 troops came to Texas for maneuvers. The town's population grew from 900 to 22,000, and the troops and supporting civilian staff members faced life in a small town. Local residents cooperated and participated by rationing and trading with troops, offering facilities for a mock U.S.O. (United Service Organizations) facility and attending programs and presentations given by soldiers. Such programs included an airdrop of 2,500 troops, as well as weapons, equipment and rations, in a training maneuver that pitted the 31st Infantry, 47th Infantry, and 1st armored division against the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
In a nationally publicized event, aggressor forces captured and occupied Lampasas (17 mi. SE), establishing mock control of media and setting curfews. The city was liberated near the end of the simulation on April 9, 1952. The $3,300,000 exercise left local residents with damaged ranch land, outbuildings, fences and gates, as well as spooked livestock, but also gave them an opportunity to experience war in their own community.

Combat in outnumbered scenarios: The origin of Historical Fencing

From the distant times of ferocious open field battles held either between villages or even nations, to the most basic and oldest self defense scenario of having to confront gangs of robbers, Mankind has always been daunted by the need to face larger groups of opponents. Being Jogo do Pau the only living European Martial Art with an unbroken lineage, the systematization presented of its main skills for this type of combat establishes a bridge between present and past, allowing for a better understanding of the history, technique and combat skill found in other European Fencing schools such as the German and Italian. The Doebringer manuscript is a clear example of this in which it reads “just make sure, that they can’t get at you all at once” ... “that you quickly attack the ones on the outer ends, before the others turn against you, then they will have to turn after you since you are leading. Then you can well notice, when it is or is not save to move away from the opponent and then leap away from him as I say. There is no hurt or disgrace to run away from four or six”. The additional analysis presented regarding the evolution of these arts as combat leisure activities, more focused towards single combat, as well as their transference to shorter one handed weapons such as the baton and walking cane, came about as a result of the social changes brought by the creation of industrial cities, and make this document unique and extremely valuable for anyone interested in the historical, cultural and martial interpretation of these arts.

I've spray-painted the box and the stencil from last time in black, to make them even less likely to let through unwanted light (and make them look nicer as well). I also added a "lid" to close off the top part after the stencil is inserted.

I've also started making colour filters (only one in blue for now) to be able to get different colours from the same stencil. Filter + Stencil just go into the box behind each other.

Also in the picture is a laser + uv + led pointer to add some other effects to the photos.

In with the new, out with the old

In with the new, out with the old

True story! My living room lighting is horrible (as it is anywhere in my house). I can't even see what I'm knitting in this room. I was using my old, patched together photography lighting equipment to have enough light to see, while waiting for NEW equipment to arrive (I can't wait to start taking product photos again!).

The lightbulb in my old old stand blew this morning. :( AND, I kid you not, UPS knocked on my door moments (less than a minute!) later, with my new equipment.

YAY.

I love happy endings. :)

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet: A Novel

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet: A Novel

The year is 1799, the place Dejima in Nagasaki Harbor, the Japanese Empire’s single port and sole window onto the world, designed to keep the West at bay. To this place of devious merchants, deceitful interpreters, and costly courtesans comes Jacob de Zoet, a devout young clerk who has five years in the East to earn a fortune of sufficient size to win the hand of his wealthy fiancee back in Holland. But Jacob’s original intentions are eclipsed after a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, the disfigured midwife to the city’s powerful magistrate. The borders between propriety, profit, and pleasure blur until Jacob finds his vision clouded, one rash promise made and then fatefully broken—the consequences of which will extend beyond Jacob’s worst imaginings.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2010: David Mitchell reinvents himself with each book, and it's thrilling to watch. His novels like Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas spill over with narrators and language, collecting storylines connected more in spirit than in fact. In The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, he harnesses that plenitude into a more traditional form, a historical novel set in Japan at the turn into the 19th century, when the island nation was almost entirely cut off from the West except for a tiny, quarantined Dutch outpost. Jacob is a pious but not unappealing prig from Zeeland, whose self-driven duty to blurt the truth in a corrupt and deceitful trading culture, along with his headlong love for a local midwife, provides the early engine for the story, which is confined at first to the Dutch enclave but crosses before long to the mainland. Every page is overfull with language, events, and characters, exuberantly saturated in the details of the time and the place but told from a knowing and undeniably modern perspective. It's a story that seems to contain a thousand worlds in one. --Tom Nissley

Hamburg State Park, Mitchell , GA

Hamburg State Park, Mitchell , GA

Established: July 24, 1968, Acreage: 741 acres
Richard Warthen, a native of South Carolina, acquired the property in 1850 and built the first mill in Washington County just 100 feet upstream from the present mill and dam. T.B. Rachels and his brothers purchased the property around 1895. The property was later acquired by Oscar Harrison and then sold to the Gilmore brothers who farmed much of the surrounding area. In the early 1920’s the Gilmore Brothers constructed the present dam, mill and cotton gin. Construction took one to two years and the mill was capable of grinding both wheat flour and cornmeal. The mill and adjacent store were centers for both work and community activities. The brothers sold the property to the Hall family, who then sold it to Hugh M. Tarbutton and William Rawlings. In 1968 Tarbutton and Rawlings deeded the 740 acres and all historical buildings to the state of Georgia.
Hamburg provides cultural, historical, and recreational opportunities for the public. The park continues to maintain and operate the gristmill on a regular schedule, and visitors may purchase cornmeal in the old country store. The Gin House at the park’s museum with displays of equipment and artifacts used by rural farmers in the early 1900’s. the 225 acre impoundment of Hamburg Lake provides recreational opportunities for boaters and fishermen.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Mitchell

This farewell episode for Joel Hodgson is a sentimental favorite but even more worth it for the hilarity spawned by our captured Satellite of Love friends. The movie centers on the hapless, big lug cop named Mitchell (Joe Don Baker), who fights the rich and powerful drug-dealing bad guys. Along the way, Mitchell finds himself investigating murder, falling "in sex" with Linda Evans, helping an elderly woman like a good son, and telling a bothersome wisecracking kid to buzz off. Match that with clothing and music from 1975 and you've got prime fodder for the biting remarks of Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo--which, of course, they take advantage of handily and in abundance. Mitchell has a few quiet areas but these are spotty, and when Joel and his mechanical friends start wisecracking, it's all hilariously worth the wait. Mitchell: So '70s, you'd swear Kris Kristofferson was moaning the theme song in the background. --Karen Karleski

Climb to Conquer: The Untold Story of WWII's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops

Climb to Conquer: The Untold Story of WWII's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops

Few stories from the "greatest generation" are as unforgettable -- or as little known -- as that of the 10th Mountain Division. Today a versatile light infantry unit deployed around the world, the 10th began in 1941 as a crew of civilian athletes with a passion for mountains and snow. In this vivid history, adventure writer Peter Shelton follows the unique division from its conception on a Vermont ski hill, through its dramatic World War II coming-of-age, to the ultimate revolution it inspired in American outdoor life.
In the late-1930s United States, rock climbing and downhill skiing were relatively new sports. But World War II brought a need for men who could handle extreme mountainous conditions -- and the elite 10th Mountain Division was born. Everything about it was unprecedented: It was the sole U.S. Army division trained on snow and rock, the only division ever to grow out of a sport. It had an un-matched number of professional athletes, college scholars, and potential officer candidates, and as the last U.S. division to enter the war in Europe, it suffered the highest number of casualties per combat day. This is the 10th's surprising, suspenseful, and often touching story.
Drawing on years of interviews and research, Shelton re-creates the ski troops' lively, extensive, and sometimes experimental training and their journey from boot camp to the Italian Apennines. There, scaling a 1,500-foot "unclimbable" cliff face in the dead of night, they stunned their enemy and began the eventual rout of the German armies from northern Italy.
It was a self-selecting elite, a brotherhood in sport and spirit. And those who survived (including the Sierra Club's David Brower, Aspen Skiing Corporation founder Friedl Pfeifer, and Nike cofounder Bill Bowerman, who developed the waffle-sole running shoe) turned their love of mountains into the thriving outdoor industry that has transformed the way Americans see (and play in) the natural world.

Locks and assembly instructions are included. The carrier comes with a limited lifetime warranty against defects.
About Thule
To say that Thule’s beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

Crossed Swords: Pakistan, Its Army, and the Wars Within (Oxford Pakistan Paperbacks)

Crossed Swords: Pakistan, Its Army, and the Wars Within (Oxford Pakistan Paperbacks)

Based on 30 years of research and analysis, this definitive book is a profound, multi-layered, and historical analysis of the nature and role of the Pakistan army in the country's polity as well as its turbulent relationship with the United States. Shuja Nawaz examines the army and Pakistan in both peace and war. Using many hitherto unpublished materials from the archives of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the General Headquarters of the Pakistan Army, as well as interviews with key military and political figures in Pakistan and the United States, he sheds light not only on the Pakistan Army and its US connections but also on Pakistan as a key Muslim country in one of the world's toughest neighborhoods. In doing so, he lays bare key facts about Pakistan's numerous wars with India and its many rounds of political musical chairs, as well as the Kargil conflict of 1999. He then draws lessons from this history that may help Pakistan end its wars within and create a stabler political entity.

UNHCR News Story: Newly displaced Pakistani civilians report grim conditions in Swat Valley

UNHCR News Story: Newly displaced Pakistani civilians report grim conditions in Swat Valley

An IDP family just arrives in Sugar Mill camp, in Charsadda district. They took advantage of the lifting of the curfew to flee from their home in Char Bagh, in Swat district. They lived for one month in the basement of their home, in fear of the bombing, and surviving on food stocks. The army organized truck evacuation of civilians to Mardan and Charsadda on May 31 and June 1st. As of June 1st, 2.5 millions people from Swat, Buner and LowerDir districts have been displaced by the conflict betwen militants and governmental forces . UNHCR / H. Caux / Charsadda / Pakistan / June 1st, 2009

Newly displaced Pakistani civilians report grim conditions in Swat Valley

CHARSADDA, Pakistan. June 2 (UNHCR) – For nearly a month, they've sheltered in basements eking out a living on spinach and naan bread. They have watched as shells destroyed their homes or those of their neighbours.

But lately, even the most stubborn residents of north-west Pakistan's Swat Valley have felt compelled to leave. Over the weekend thousands took advantage of the lifting of a government curfew on the region to flee to safer areas in Mardan, Swabi and Charsadda districts of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

"We could hear the shelling and bombing every day, we could see the helicopters," recalls Ajij, 35, a farmer from a village near Mingora, the main town in Swat district, who arrived Monday with his wife and five children at Sugar Mill, one of two new camps set up by UNHCR over the weekend. His house was completely destroyed a week ago, he says, though nobody was in it at the time. "We will lose our crops, it is inevitable at this point," says Ajij.

Many of the newly displaced report severe shortages of food and medicine in Swat. Bakhatali, aged 40, also arrived at Sugar Mill camp this week. He, his wife and six children hid in their basement in Mingora for a month before finally being forced to leave. "We were afraid of the bombing all this time," he said. "The children could not sleep. I had to put cotton wool in their ears."

Mohammed, 40, a father of two young children who arrived at Sugar Mill camp this week says he and his family were afraid to leave home because of the bombing. "But as soon as we heard that the curfew was lifted, we walked through the mountains to Batkhila" and from there caught a bus to Mardan.

Hundreds of thousands of people have now fled the fighting in the Swat Valley, Lower Dir and Buner districts in the past month. To respond to the newest influx, UNHCR, together with its implementing partners and the authorities of the NWFP, set up two new camps in Charsadda and Peshawar districts.

Sugar Mill camp, in Charsadda, received 400 families, or 2,400 individuals, on Monday and another 175 families, or 1,050 individuals, on Tuesday. Larama camp, located in the suburbs of Peshawar town, received 98 people Tuesday.

The pause in fighting this weekend was the first opportunity in some time for people trapped in those areas to escape to safer zones. Many of the families reported they were transported out of Swat Valley by government-arranged trucks which took them to Yar Hussain camp in Swabi or Sugar Mill in Charsadda.

Others said they had walked some of the way before taking buses to reach safer areas. Some were able to rent private accommodation and others found a place to stay with host families or in schools.

In the new camp in Charsadda – which is named for a sugar mill that used to operate there until 1996 – UNHCR has provided relief kit items such as plastic sheeting, jerry cans and blankets for a total of 850 families. The governmental District Coordination Officer is providing tents.

It is also working with the local non-governmental organization IDRAK to hire equipment and a labour force to clear and level the ground. UNICEF is installing latrines with its partner Humanitarian Resources Development Society. Basic health facilities should be in place in the next few days.

UNHCR is installing electricity in the new camp, building shaded structures above individual tents or in communal areas and giving families bricks to build fire places to cook their food. In Jalala camp in Mardan district, meanwhile, UNHCR partner IDRAK erected 120 green nets above family tents in order to better protect them from the summer heat. Some 900 similar structures will be completed in coming days.

For newly displaced people like Ajij, accustomed to the cooler temperatures in the Swat Valley, the temperatures are just one of many difficulties they have to face. "We have small children. It is too hard for them," he conceded of the heat in the camps. "I want to go back."

Crossley-Chevrolet Armoured Car

Crossley-Chevrolet Armoured Car

In 1915 the British Army started to use armoured cars in India, particularly on the North West Frontier, to relieve troops needed elsewhere. They proved so successful that this soon became standard policy. Shortly after the war the Indian Government purchased 16 Rolls-Royce cars to a new design but these proved so expensive that subsequent orders were placed with Crossley Motors in Manchester who made a tough but cheap 50hp chassis. 451 of these 5-tonne cars were built between 1923 and 1925, mainly for India, although some were exported to Japan. The body design, very similar to the Rolls-Royce version and built by Vickers at Crayford, had a number of interesting features. These included a dome-shaped turret, with four machine-gun mounts, which was designed to deflect rifle shots from snipers in ambush positions in the high passes. A clamshell cupola surmounted the turret for the commander, while side doors opened opposite ways on either side so that a crew member could dismount safely under fire. The crew area was lined with asbestos to keep the temperature down and the entire body could be electrified to keep large crowds at bay. Since pneumatic tyres did not survive for long in the Indian climate these cars were originally fitted with narrow, solid tyres which made them rather unstable. By 1939, when the Royal Tank Corps in India had handed most of its equipment over to the Indian Army, the Crossleys were worn out. The bodies were then transferred to imported Chevrolet truck chassis, with pneumatic tyres, and in this form served with Indian forces in the Middle East (Iraq, Syria and Persia) in the early years of the war. The Japanese used theirs in Manchuria and some were still operational in the early years of WWII. This particular example, seen in the new hall at The Tank Museum, Bovington, Dorset, England, was presented by the Government of Pakistan in 1951.

War, Coups and Terror: Pakistan's Army in Years of Turmoil

A major study of the Pakistan army by an expert with access to the top levels of the political and military establishment.
In recent years, Pakistan has changed from being a state of regional strategic significance to one of major global importance. Its geographical position and delicate religious mix, coupled with a complex political structure and its status as a nuclear power, have ensured that its actions—and inactions—have attracted close scrutiny since 9/11 and the declaration of the 'War on Terror.' Yet there remains widespread dis-agreement among political and military analysts as to the real position of this enigmatic nation.

In War, Coups, and Terror, Brian Cloughley explores the underbelly of Pakistan's military and its controversial role within the Pakistani government since Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto came to power in 1971. An insider with links to Pakistan's past and present senior officers, Cloughley provides a unique insight into the Army's influence and position as a force in the fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban, as well as an account of operations against the 2003-2004 tribal uprising. His coverage of military-political relations will fascinate those who seek a closer understanding of this enigmatic and complex country, its ambitions, affiliations, and loyalties.

Don't Laugh! It's a Start! and Tiny True Story

Don't Laugh! It's a Start! and Tiny True Story

I have a problem hoarding things. For years I have been saying I might just rent a dumpster and start pitching things out. Well, today was the day. Some things I will donate to charity, and some blankets and towels to Heartland Humane Society, and some I will just reorganize. My goal today was just to clear a path though everything, and make sure the little dumpster got delivered OK. I only rented a small one, as for non-commercial uses, the waste management place only offered two sizes, huge and small. I couldn't afford the huge one, or I would have. I brought some things home to sort too. I will still have a storage unit, but I plan to make room to put a chair and a light and to sort things. Continuing my process of reducing, restoring and recycling things should just make life more comfortable. This has been a long time coming. I used to be a compulsive spender, and I have stopped doing that, but I still live with a lot of clutter. I'm not really looking for advice. I just want to brag about finally taking a positive step.

I would have done more this evening than I did, but there were documented high winds, hard rain, and power outages. It cleared some late in the day; so I decided just to go do a little bit. Bad news is I cut myself on a double razor blade. Good news is I found several things that hinted there might be things in the boxes that I had been looking for for years. I think I'll make a little list of things I really want to find.

Now, if this little dumpster doesn't have any more in it than in this picture by next week, you will know I am hopelessly addicted to hanging onto stuff. LOL

BTW, I wouldn't normally throw away Dr. Seuss books, but they were covered with mildew. :o(

"This Novasonic high quality massager is Made In Denmark and comes with a 1-Year Warranty Two application heads. A Novasonic Intrasonic Transducer is a compact and high-precision electrical device which transmits sound waves to the treatment area through a 'sound-head,' applied without pressure to the skin surface. The sound waves can penetrate up to 2 1/4" within the body, treating areas inaccessible to conventional manipulative techniques. The intensity of the waves and associated vibration can be adjusted easily, just like the volume on a radio. Novasonic (or Audible sound waves, NSTs) were first discovered to have healing properties in the 1920's by the pioneering German scientist Professor Erwin Schilephake. NSTs were originally developed and manufactured in Stuttgart, West Germany more than a quarter of a century ago. We back every Novasonic Massager that we sell with our 100% money back guarantee. The unit emits a power of 100 milliwatts at the head. The energy penetrates nearly 10 cm into the tissues. The frequencies are a series being outputted as a cluster of frequencies (all at the same time) from 60 Hz up to about 10,000 Hz. This cluster is permanently tuned and locked in at the factory (not adjustable by user). The knob on the handle only adjusts the output power."

Argus

Argus

RFA Argus photographed at Portsmouth on 31 July 2010 during Navy Day

Details from MOD Royal Navy Site
RFA Argus is unusual in having two primary roles. Firstly, she can deploy to war zones as a Primary Casualty Receiving Facility (PCRF) providing facilities including two operating theatres and 100 beds. This ensures that wounded service personnel of all nationalities can receive swift care equal to that of most UK hospitals and was used to great effect during both Gulf Wars. However, because she does not comply with the Geneva Convention and International Red Cross requirements – she may be fitted with self-defence guns or have operational units embarked for example – RFA Argus is not classified as a hospital ship and does not display a Red Cross.

The PCRF Complex within Argus is a fully equipped 100 bed hospital facility offering services including a 4 bay Operating theatre coupled with a 10 bed Intensive Care Unit, 20 bed High Dependency Unit, two 35 bed General wards and the full gamut of clinical support services, including Imaging, Pathology, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. Commander Ian Phillips, Commanding Officer of the PCRF, says “PCRF delivers deployed hospital care to members of the UK Armed Forces, from the Sea. PCRF aims to deliver outcomes of treatment which equate to best practice and evidence based medicine, offering the highest level of care to the deployed Service personnel.

A wide variety of expertise can embark including Consultants, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals and provide a full spectrum of clinical capability, include Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Burns and Plastics, Anaesthetics, Maxillo-Facial, Ophthalmology, ENT, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, General Practice, Dental, Intensive Care, Operating Theatre Practitioners, Physiotherapists and Pharmacists. In addition, members of Her Majesty’s’ Royal Marines Band undertake an operational role as stretcher bearers.

Secondly she provides specialist aviation training facilities – which is why more than two thirds of her length is given over to a flight deck to accommodate any of the Royal Navy’s helicopters. RFA Argus’ flexible design means she is able to fulfil additional roles. As a logistic ship she can be adapted to transport large amounts of equipment very quickly.

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for industrial and non-industrial personal safety equipment and clothing across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as "regions"). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of "economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this "economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Heath & Safety

In the open street, without any safety equipment this guy was happily trying to break into a steel safe!

Not the worst example of the differences between health and safety in Asia and Europe but good nevertheless.

This could happen anywhere, but it's amusing to see it in Shanghai on an extremely crowded morning bus. Notice the red and blue sign/arrow pointing towards the disturbingly absent safety hammer.

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Railway or Tramway Track Fixtures and Fittings; Mechanical Signaling, Safety, and Traffic Control Equipment for Railways and Tramways; and Parts Thereof in China

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for railway or tramway track fixtures and fittings; mechanical signaling, safety, and traffic control equipment for railways and tramways; and parts thereof for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China
