Day 101 - Money, Money, Money! (30 Days of Rants & Raves - 04)

Day 101 - Money, Money, Money! (30 Days of Rants & Raves - 04)

Meh! Nothing about today's photo turned out as I had hoped it would. The original idea I had simply did not work. Nothing I did in Photoshop seemed to work today, so I went with the least Photoshopped image, and I'm not even satisfied with this one. My hand looks weirdly big and fat, for one thing. Probably because my lens was set at 35mm. That's about the only thing I can figure, anyway.

The point of this image, to shed the moaning and groaning of the previous paragraph, is actually a rave. As of today, Monday, Martin Luther King Day (here in the U.S.), I am debt-free! It's taken a lot of work (a whole lot of overtime) and a lot of sacrifice (going without a lot of things for a long time), too. Where I work, the overtime we've been allowed to work all year long last year and this is coming to an end at the end of this month, so I'm now making a point to start working more overtime than I had been.

Back in October, I'd managed to pay my car off, which left a debt-consolidation loan I'd taken out in November of last year. It was a 5-year loan and I'd made a point to send in more than the minimum payment right from the start. Once I'd paid off my car, I took the money I'd been setting aside for that every month and started applying it to the loan. The result is that what was a 5-year loan got paid off in 14 MONTHS!

I'm going to hazard this prognostication: I foresee the purchase of more photography equipment in the near future. :P :D LOL

(FOOTNOTE: The money I have in hand, $120, is one-third the cost of one of the flashes available for my camera at Amazon (Canon Speedlite 580EX II), and about one-half the cost of the other (Canon Speedlite 430EX II). My plan is to use the overtime I earn for the rest of the month to buy one of the flashes I've mentioned, a stand, an umbrella, and a Justin Clamp, at the very least. I'd also like to mention that because today is a national holiday and is recognised by my employer (they don't recognise all holidays), I will earn even more money because I will be working the holiday. I dressed myself up in a shirt-and-tie — even though I actually don't like to wear a tie — to represent my success at achieving this goal.)

Photography tip: Fun with t-stops

Photography tip: Fun with t-stops

Here's a quick descent into geekdom. I've seen hundreds of new macro lens owners run to me with the same question: "When I focus closely, my maximum aperture closes a LOT! Is my lens broken? Was it made cheaply?"

Nope. In fact, your aperture isn't really changing at all. All that happens is that to come up with a good, general-purpose macro design, there is a trade-off that at super-close distances, a "bellows effect" means that the lens is less effective at transmitting light. (Something that's measured in t-stops) Note, though, that the aperture of the lens isn't closing down (measured in f-stops). But new lenses and cameras are smart, so they let you know "Hey! You're not getting as much light as you might think, and you'll want to adjust for that!"

Confused yet? Maybe this video will help. We start out with a way-out-of-focus image of a nickel, and there's a big ol' blown highlight. Note that as I use the Nikon 60mm AF-S macro to focus all the way in, the exposure gets darker, and the blown highlight goes away. But the *aperture* doesn't change -- you don't all of a sudden see more depth-of-field.

So don't freak out when you buy a new macro, but adjust your ISO or flash power accordingly when shooting close-up.

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Audio-Frequency Electric Amplifiers in Singapore

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Audio-Frequency Electric Amplifiers in Singapore

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on audio-frequency electric amplifiers in Singapore face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying audio-frequency electric amplifiers to Singapore? How important is Singapore compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of audio-frequency electric amplifiers vary from one country of origin to another in Singapore? On the supply side, Singapore also exports audio-frequency electric amplifiers. Which countries receive the most exports from Singapore? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for audio-frequency electric amplifiers in Singapore. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for audio-frequency electric amplifiers for those countries serving Singapore via exports, or supplying from Singapore via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Singapore fits into the world market for imported and exported audio-frequency electric amplifiers. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Singapore in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Singapore is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Singapore compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

This is a nice place to visit in Singapore for audio experience. The owner is Mr. Poon. He knows the stuff he sells. Unlike stores in Adelphi, he sells underground and rare audio equipments you may find only in e-magazines, such as 6 Moons or TNT. This guy is very nice and funny too. I highly recommend this store. This store is in Beauty World Centre, Upper Bukit Timah Rd. If you plan to come, you should contact him first. He usually opens the store late. He carries the well known giant killer amps such as Trends Audio TA 10.1 and Pop Pulse. He also distributes DACs and NespaPro. From my evaluation so far, I believe his price is the lowest in Asia. His systems may sound differently from the so called audiophille sound, but try to listen to them with your ears and heart.

New York Zoological Society Bathysphere

New York Zoological Society Bathysphere

The Bathysphere (Greek words ????? (bathos), "depth" and ?????? (sphaira), "sphere") is a spherical deep-sea submersible which was unpowered and lowered into the ocean on a cable, and was used to conduct a series of dives off the coast of Bermuda from 1930 to 1934. The Bathysphere was designed in 1928 and 1929 by the American Engineer Otis Barton, to be used by the naturalist William Beebe for studying undersea wildlife. Beebe and Barton conducted dives in the Bathysphere together, marking the first time that a marine biologist observed deep-sea animals in their native environment. Their dives set several consecutive world records for the deepest dive ever performed by a human. The record set by the deepest of these, to a depth of 3,028 feet on August 15, 1934, lasted until it was broken by Barton in 1949.

In 1928, the American naturalist William Beebe was given permission by the British government to establish a research station on Nonsuch Island, Bermuda. Using this station, Beebe planned to conduct an in-depth study of the animals inhabiting an eight-mile-square area of ocean, from a depth of two miles to the surface. Although his initial plan called for him to conduct this study by means of helmet diving and dredging, Beebe soon realized that these methods were inadequate for gaining a detailed understanding of deep-sea animals, and began making plans to invent a way to observe them in their native habitat.

As of the late 1920s, the deepest humans could safely descend in diving helmets was 100 feet, since beyond that point the pressure becomes too great. Submarines of the time had descended to a maximum of 383 feet, but had no windows, making them useless for Beebe's goal of observing deep-sea animals. The deepest in the ocean that any human had descended at this point was 525 feet wearing an armored suit, but these suits also made movement and observation extremely difficult. What Beebe hoped to create was a deep-sea vessel which both could descend to a much greater depth than any human had descended thus far, and also would enable him to clearly observe and document the deep ocean's wildlife.

Beebe's initial design called for a cylindrical vessel, and articles describing his plans were published in The New York Times. These articles caught the attention of the engineer Otis Barton, who had his own ambition to become a deep-sea explorer. Barton was certain that a cylinder would not be strong enough to withstand the pressure of the depths to which Beebe was planning to descend, and sent Beebe several letters proposing an alternative design to him. So many unqualified opportunists were attempting to join Beebe in his efforts that Beebe tended to ignore most of his mail, and Barton's first efforts to contact him were fruitless. A mutual friend of Barton's and Beebe's eventually arranged a meeting between the two, enabling Barton to present his design to Beebe in person. Beebe approved of Barton's design, and the two of them made a deal: Barton would pay for the vessel and all of the other equipment to go with it, while Beebe would pay for other expenses such as chartering a ship to raise and lower it, and as the owner of the vessel Barton would accompany Beebe on his dives in it.

Barton's design called for a spherical vessel, as a sphere is the best possible shape for resisting high pressure. The sphere had openings for three 3-inch-thick (76 mm) windows made of fused quartz, the strongest transparent material then available, as well a 400-pound entrance hatch which was to be bolted down before a descent. Initially only two of the windows were mounted on the sphere, and a steel plug was mounted in place of the third window. Oxygen was supplied from high-pressure cylinders carried inside the sphere, while pans of soda lime and calcium chloride were mounted inside the sphere's walls to absorb exhaled CO2 and moisture. Air was to be circulated past these trays by the Bathysphere's occupants using palm-leaf fans.

The casting of the steel sphere was handled by Watson Stillman Hydraulic Machinery Company in Roselle, New Jersey, and the cord to raise and lower the sphere was provided by John A. Roebling's Sons Company. General Electric provided a lamp which would be mounted just inside one of the windows to illuminate animals outside the sphere, and Bell Laboratories provided a telephone system by which divers inside the sphere could communicate with the surface. The cables for the telephone and to provide electricity for the lamp were sealed inside a rubber hose, which entered the body of the Bathysphere through a stuffing box.

After the initial version of the sphere had been cast in June 1929, it was discovered that it was too heavy to be lifted by the winch which would be used to lower it into the ocean, requiring Barton to have the sphere melted and re-cast. The final, lighter design consisted of a hollow sphere of 1-inch-thick (25 mm) cast steel which was 4.75 ft (1.5 m) in diamete

The Treasure of San Miguel Island

Synopsis:
In the 1980’s, massive unemployment spread throughout the west coast of the United States. With little work available, Jack Morgan and Carl Webb embark on a fateful journey to find and claim lost treasure off the California coast. Morgan, a noble and wise man who marches to the beat of his own drummer, is highly skilled and efficient in all of his endeavors. Webb, also highly efficient, is an honest and fair mechanical engineer who can become quite a formidable adversary when necessary.

Together these men set out to explore the shipwrecks surrounding the Channel Islands. Here a dangerous reef has claimed many a ship since the Europeans first came to the new world. Surely there is plenty of treasure for the taking. Once arrived however, Morgan and Webb discover that their plan will not be as easy to carry out as they had hoped. Will they find the treasure they so desperately seek and survive such a perilous undertaking?

About the Author:
Author, William H. White spent most of his life in rural California but he currently enjoys his retirement in New Mexico, treasure hunting and giving tours of the Caballo Mountains. The Treasure of San Miguel Island was inspired by a trip to the Channel Islands off the coast of California when he was fifteen. He has published various treasure hunting books including Tales of the Caballos in 2003. Another book, Reflections, contains a series of noteworthy experiences but is not an autobiography.

The White Pass & Yukon railroad. There are two passes, very near the current town of Skagway, Alaska, over the Coastal Range. One is the White Pass, the other the Chilkoot trail. When the Klondike gold rush began at the end of the 19th century, both passes were popular routes for prospectors heading to the Klondike. At the head of each pass was a town. The White Pass led out of Skagway, the Chilkoot trail from a town called Dyea. It was possible to bring pack animals up the White Pass, though difficult. Dead Horse Gulch, along the White pass, was named for the thousands of horses that died and were dumped there during the rush. The Chilkoot trail was unpassable by pack animals due, in part, to a section known as "the Golden Stairs" -- which really were steps carved into the ice. One of the design options for Alaska's license plates features a stream of prospectors climbing the Golden Stairs.

Skagway was also a vastly superior port, with deep water right up to town. There was, a long tidal flat at Dyea, which necessitated the construction of an enormous dock stretching its length. The tidal flat is still there and some of the pilings from the dock, Dyea is not.

The White pass was the longer route and slower, so notwithstanding the ability to use pack animals, the Chilkoot trail remained popular and Skagway and Dyea were both thriving towns.

Then a railroad was built over the White Pass. This railroad. Dyea vanished. The train was an important mining route for many years, but its importance faded when production in the Canadian mines slowed and when a road was put through the White Pass. It was out of business for many years but has reopened as an excursion train. I am not the first to observe that Skagway's business today is really the same as it always was -- lightening the pocketbooks of those passing through. Of course in the old days a lot of that was done through fraud, theft, liquor, and prostituion. A lot more was done through sales of supplies and equipment but even that had a tinge of the disreptuable since most of the people buying would go on to failure.

Today a lot of that edge is gone and there's a bit more kitsch, but its nice to know that some things haven't changed -- a bit of the old spirit remains. Also, it's still -- as they say -- "a nice drinking town with a serious hiking problem.

Thos W Ward

Thos W Ward

Thomas Ward was born in 1853, started work at 15, became a coal merchant and then, because the time was right for it, a scrap metal dealer in Sheffield. In the early 1870s there was a big demand for scrap metal. There were many big engineering projects and Thomas Ward developed an expertise in dismantling big structures, ships for instance. He had breakers' yards at ports round the country and became the biggest scrap dealer in the country, taking apart old warships and redundant luxury liners. These included the Majestic, sister ship to the Titanic, which was broken up at his yard at Morecambe, and the Olympic, which was finally towed to Inverkeithing.

Thomas Ward Ltd of Sheffield opened its ship dismantling department in 1894 and soon became the largest supplier of scrap metal to the growing steel industry. The keynote was efficiency - everything on board a ship was dismantled and resold. Ships' fittings and equipment were sold at the showroom in Sheffield. Books, lamps, toilets and carpets were all dismantled. It is said that even the timber was turned into garden furniture.

During the First World War, Thomas Ward's was heavily engaged in war activities. There was a shortage of horses which had been sent to the Front and in 1916 Ward leased an elephant (and a man to look after it) from a circus. Circuses had been stood down for the duration of the war. The firm had the elephant for a couple of years, stabling her near the factory and using her for hauling heavy loads of steel around Sheffield. The elephant's name was Lizzie and the records are full of anecdotes about her - eating a schoolboy's cap, putting her trunk through a kitchen window to help herself, and pushing over a traction engine.

FLICKR INFRASTRUCTURE: Blue Sponge

FLICKR INFRASTRUCTURE: Blue Sponge

Every now and then you see a photo with the deepest blue sky you ever saw and you wonder how the photographer captured such a rich color. The photographer didn't see it. The camera didn't record it. The photo-editing software didn't produce it. Even HDR is not responsible. Huh?

No, those deepest blue skies are possible because Flickr owns and operates a system of Blue Chromatic Accumulators (BCA), commonly called "blue sponges." A BCA is a device that soaks up blue colors in the atmosphere, amplifies and stores them, and streams them to Flickr Support Services, where they are incorporated into the photos that later amaze you. Application of blue pixels is done on a random basis in a hidden "interestingness" laboratory. There is no way to request or schedule this service; Flickr is committed to treating all subscribers equally. This service is not made available to free accounts.

The use of this process is not meant to denigrate the laudable efforts of photographers worldwide, but to complement them. Flickr knows that happy subscribers are long-term subscribers, and one way to keep them happy is to "enhance" their landscape shots with extra blue coloring (if such enhancement is appropriate for the image). Enhancement has proven to improve the hit rates of images significantly and to produce comments that gush with enthusiasm.

The technology that accomplishes this is patented and the location of the pictured device is a closely-guarded secret. To say any more would be imprudent. However, there is a set of solar panels that look remarkably like this device in Utah, at the geotagged location.

Peter Iovino

Peter Iovino

Stills Photographer Peter Iovino was a lot of fun, and amazed our crew near the end of the show with a hidden talent... he's a card sharp.

Take a look at the thing he's holding in his hands... know what it is? It's called a "blimp". Stills photographers on feature films must use blimps because the devices essentially silence the 35mm or medium format SLRs that they use to shoot with while cameras are rolling. The sound recording equipment is very sensitive around camera and in the silence of a scene a 35mm camera's lens tripping can sound like a pump-action shotgun being racked one time. A blimp almost entirely silences that sound and you can only hear it if you're standing right next to the stills photographer.

The advent of all-digital SLRs has probably reduced the chance of a still camera adding noise to a track but I'm betting they still use blimps.

Extra Credit: Can you see Andy Tennant, our director, in the background of this photo?

As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires

As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires

MILLIONS OF AMERICAN BASEBALL FANS KNOW, WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY, that umpires are simply overpaid galoots who are doing an easy job badly. Millions of American baseball fans are wrong.
As They See ’Em is an insider’s look at the largely unknown world of professional umpires, the small group of men (and the very occasional woman) who make sure America’s favorite pastime is conducted in a manner that is clean, crisp, and true. Bruce Weber, a New York Times reporter, not only interviewed dozens of professional umpires but entered their world, trained to become an umpire, then spent a season working games from Little League to big league spring training. As They See ’Em is Weber’s entertaining account of this experience as well as a lively exploration of what amounts to an eccentric secret society, with its own customs, its own rituals, its own colorful vocabulary. Writing with deep knowledge of and affection for baseball, he delves into such questions as: Why isn’t every strike created equal? Is the ump part of the game or outside of it? Why doesn’t a tie go to the runner? And what do umps and managers say to each other during an argument, really?
Packed with fascinating reportage that reveals the game as never before and answers the kinds of questions that fans, exasperated by the cliches of conventional sports commentary, pose to themselves around the television set, Bruce Weber’s As They See ’Em is a towering grand slam.

The Men in Blue: Conversations with Umpires (Bison Book)

The philosopher Jacques Barzun thought that "whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." And whoever wants to know baseball had better learn about umpires. As Larry Gerlach points out in The Men in Blue, these arbiters transform competitive chaos into organized sport. They make it possible to "play ball," but nobody loves them.
Considering the abuse meted out by fans and players, why would any sane person want to be an umpire? Many reasons emerge in conversations with a dozen former major league arbiters. While nobody loves them, they love the game. Gerlach has elicited entertaining stories from these figures under fire--about their lonely travels, their dealings with umpire baiters, battles for unionization, breaking through the color line, and much more. From Beans Reardon, who came up to the National League in 1926, to Ed Sudol, who retired in 1977, here is a witty and telling portrait of baseball from the boisterous Golden Age to the Jet Age of Instant Replay.

Dixieland Delight: A Football Season on the Road in the Southeastern Conference

There is no college ball more passionate and competitive than football in the Southeastern Conference, where seven of the twelve schools boast stadiums bigger than any in the NFL and 6.5 million fans hit the road every year to hoot and holler their teams to victory.
In September 2006, popular sports columnist and lifelong University of Tennessee fan Clay Travis set out on his "Dixieland Delight Tour." Without a single map, hotel reservation, or game ticket, he began an 8,000-mile journey through the beating heart of the Southland. As Travis toured the SEC, he immersed himself in the bizarre game-day rituals of the common fan, brazenly dancing with the chancellor's wife at a Vanderbilt frat party, hanging with University of Florida demigod quarterback Tim Tebow, and abandoning himself totally to the ribald intensity and religious fervor of SEC football. Dixieland Delight is Travis's hilarious, loving, irreverent, and endlessly entertaining chronicle of a season of ironic excess in a world that goes a little crazy on football Saturdays.

Wolfe's Pond Park

Wolfe's Pond Park

Huguenot, Staten Island

The landscape of Wolfe’s Pond Park on Raritan Bay is rich in history, both natural and manmade. The beach was formed nearly 20,000 years ago during the last part of the ice age. The Wisconsin ice sheet transported enormous amounts of clays, sands, and gravels south and deposited them along the shores of Staten Island. The freshwater Wolfe’s Pond was once a tidal inlet, but the gradual action of wind and waves pushed sand and clay into the mouth of the inlet, damming it and forming a pond. It is connected by a stream to Acme Pond, which was formed as the Wisconsin ice sheet retreated, leaving a large chunk of ice behind. As the chunk melted, it made a permanent depression, or kettle hole pond, filled with water.

The rich marine and freshwater resources, bordered by lush woodlands, made this area a very desirable location for human settlement. About 6000 years ago, ancestors of the Algonquian Lenape people established camps on bluffs overlooking Raritan Bay, where they collected fish and shellfish, hunted deer and turkey, and cultivated squash and corn. In the 1700s European colonists arrived in the area and developed a thriving oyster-harvesting industry, selling to American and even European markets. Prominent Staten Island families bought farmland here, including the Johnsons, the Seguines, and the Wolfes—for whom the pond is named.

In 1857 the State of New York purchased the Wolfe Farm for use as a quarantine station for sick immigrants. Local fishermen and oystermen suspected that the facility was contaminating the water. They burned down one building after another in protest. As a result, the quarantine station was relocated to Tompkinsville (and later to Hoffman and Swinburne Islands), and the State established a burial ground on the site. The land was sold to a private developer in 1907.

When the City acquired land for Wolfe’s Pond Park in 1929-30, it was already a popular recreational spot for the people of Staten Island and visitors from other boroughs of New York City and from New Jersey. More than ninety bungalows and summer cottages surrounded the pond. As a result of community protest in 1933, the buildings were razed and substantial park improvements were undertaken. A new dam was built to protect the freshwater pond from the infusion of salt water from the bay. A boat house, bath house, stairs to the beach, a parking lot, playground, and picnic area were constructed. Additional parcels of land expanded the park to its present acreage. After winter storms in 1992 breached the berm separating Wolfe’s Pond from the ocean, Mayor Giuliani and Borough President Molinari funded three major capital projects, which were completed between 1995 and 1998. The $1,200,000 construction of a pond embankment and beach protection included installing a planted berm and a new weir. The $1,112,665 reconstruction of the picnic area and parking lot provided new lawns, trees, shrubs, play equipment, picnic areas, benches, paths, pavements, and drainage and lighting systems. The most recent $1,500,000 reconstruction project included a picnic area, tot lot, tennis courts, basketball courts, roller hockey rink, pedestrian paths, sitting areas, and shoreline protection.

Uma Linda Quinta-Feira aos meus Queridos Amigos...***...A Wonderful Thursday for my Dear Friends

March 10, we Homage the Day of the Telephone, Brazil

The telephone is a telecommunications device designed to transmit sound via electrical signals on inland telephone.
It is defined as an electroacoustic device that enables the transformation at the point transmitter of acoustic energy into electrical energy, and the receiver point, we have the transformation of electrical energy into sound, thus allowing the exchange of information (spoken and heard) between two or more subscribers. Of course, to be successful in this communication, the devices need to be connected to various equipment that form a central telephone.

There is much controversy about the invention of the telephone, which has generally been attributed to Alexander Graham Bell.
However, as recognized by the U.S. Congress by resolution 269 of 15 June 2002, the device was invented around 1860 by Italian Antonio Meucci, who called him "speaking telegraph". The first public demonstration of Meucci's invention took place in 1860, and had his description published in Italian language newspaper in New York. Meucci se

Give Peace a Chance

Give Peace a Chance

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE
Recorded during John and Yoko’s second Bed-In at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal, Canada, in Room 1742, where John composed the song. He then ordered an eight-track mobile recording unit be sent to the hotel and the equipment was installed in the bedroom.
On Sunday evening, June 1, 1969, John and Yoko began recording their peace anthem in the company of a number of guests. Tommy Smothers joined John, playing guitar and singing. Yoko added sound effects by banging on a wardrobe. Members of the chorus included Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Dick Gregory, Petula Clark, Derek Taylor, a rabbi, a priest, members of a Krishna Temple and the disc jockeys Murray the K and Roger Scott. Additional voices came from the film crew, journalists and members of the hotel staff.
The song was the first solo single by a member of the Beatles. It was issued in America on July 7, 1969 and sold over two million copies.
It had been John’s desire to write a peace anthem that would motivate a new generation – and he succeeded. On November 15, 1969 half a million people sang “Give Peace A Chance” outside the White House in Washington, D.C.
“If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that’s his problem. LOVE AND PEACE ARE ETERNAL.” – John Lennon
