On-Location Gear bag: Tamrac Rolling Case
This is what my gear bag looks like for any non-studio on-location shoots. Since it is just me, it has to be relatively easy to move around with. I have a large Tamrac bag on wheels with a pull up drag-handle that works like a charm. It allows me to carry my lighting and camera bodies/lenses inside the case, while I can stuff light stand(s), umbrella(s) in the front, and there is a little room for the Vagabond II unit if I buckle its straps to the drag-handle on top.
This little beast weighs a ton, but since I can drag it behind me on wheels, it works out perfectly for me.
If it became absolutely necessary, there is a hidden backpack harness in the rear of the bag that can be pulled out and the bag can be worn as a backpack. Not recommended when fully loaded though. :)
This is a TAMRAC bag, but I don't know the exact model number. I picked it up years ago used at a pawn shop for a song.
Lunch on Manhattan
Ducked into this wonderful spot [Le Pain Quotidien, just south of Union Square, on Broadway] to catch a quick lunch on the way to the train. A woman who sat across from me [communal table - I love it!] said it's a chain, but it didn't feel like a chain. The menu confirms it's got locations in NY & CA.
Good bread, good gazpacho [mango is a great touch], good salad. Everything was delicious, and the service was good too. [even though I lugged in my suitcase on wheels and camera bag, and was a bit sweaty! Yuck.] Only thing I could critique would be that the brie on the salad could have been a bit riper, but that might be a touch difficult to manage.

40/52 - on the road
Apparently rounded edges are addictive once you start using them :D
So, my kid-watching this weekend fell through at the very last minute, and to amend the situation (the boys threw a massive tantrum when their mother picked them up from school instead of me!) and deal with all the sudden free time we had - we all went camping...
About an hour and a half south-east of Indianapolis, the Hardin Ridge recreational area is a handy escape for the local city folk. The weather was still amazing, and since the park closes for the winter season in a week, we picked the perfect time to get out there. With the leaves in full autumn swing, the otherwise uneventful ride was a little more appealing. The dogs, sadly, don't care about the beautiful fall colors, so they were bored out of their minds during the combined 6 hours we spent in the car (we had to drive back to Indy for the older kids' football games on Saturday.)
Hike's used to having the back all to himself (and he's generally a great traveler), but this time he had to share with Zoey (which isn't a problem, since they would gladly sit on each other's heads if the need arose) and Bailey (which was a problem, since the old girl needs *her* space.) We couldn't leave them at the campsite when we had to go somewhere, so I'm sure we were a sight for sore eyes: three adults, three kids, three dogs, a baby and a turtle (don't ask!) piled into a truck.
I had my camera with me at all times, but I didn't take many pictures. Although it was GORGEOUS, it was the type of gorgeous that you have to take in - you can't really capture it on film (or memory card.) I'll never complain about Indiana and its flat land again - there were some steep hills to climb. We spent the better part of the trip exploring a leafy ravine that was dug so deep in the ground, the sun couldn't break through the tree cover to reach us. The dried creek bed housed all sorts of critters, the funnest (and coolest) of which were salamanders. The dogs ran amok around us, hot on the trails of unseen wildlife but never straying too far.
It was exhausting in the best of ways. I really wish I could have documented it better but like I said, the environment was photo-limiting. You had to keep it light and have both hands free to get anywhere.
My picture this week reflects how both me and Hike feel at the moment - emotionally and physically drained! I had to crop it weird because it was really a vertical shot with a lot of blank space around it. I took a handful of nice pictures in the great outdoors but I liked this one best - especially the nose reflection and the smudges on the window. Seems more real somehow.
You know that feeling where you almost don't know if you're awake or dreaming because you're so tired? Yeah, I'm there right now.

Hey, women have their "Whats in your bag shots ". This is the male version of that. Yesterday I washed the outside of my truck, today was the insides turn. I breezed through the cab interior , Windexing and Armor-Alling everything and then I opened up the back. Ugh, I am always being asked by friends " Hey Bill, can you come over and help me do this and.........". So I load up the tools I need and go. Somehow though I never unload anything. Perhaps that is why my truck rattles and hums going down the road and my gas mileage has dropped precipitously. What is really sad though is that I had already taken in 4 or 5 armloads of stuff before I grabbed my camera to take this shot. But like I was taught so many many years ago as a Boy Scout "Be Prepared" LOL. "

Here is the mode menu. You get a lot of options that come with the more expensive brand name cameras like sunlight, beach, backlighting, portraiture, text, fireworks, etc. I am very surprised they have Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority mode (ASM).
A few other remarks I would like to make is that Polaroid used a camera similar to this, and rebranded it as their own. I'm guessing Norcent, or whoever makes it in the first place, sells the rights to these cameras so former film giants like polaroid and agfa can flood the market with digital cameras.
My Norcent DCS-1050 sold by Agfa is called the Agfa DC-1338i... Go to agfaphoto.cm and look at the uncanny resemblance.
Overall, the camera gets a 6.8/10 in my books. I like to use it. It's fun. It's CHEAP (I got it for $100). And it's slim. The video mode takes 16:9, 30fps movies. And the camera's build quality is not cheap. The only thing I didn't like about it was the diminishing quality in ISO 1600 as well as the glitches in the software--macro mode not being able to focus, face detection not really working for me, shake reduction mode pushing stuff up to 1600 (thank goodness for manual ISO controls), and the camera lens retracting after 5 seconds in playback. The battery life is average, but I recommend that you get a high capacity battery for this camera. It eats up juice quickly.

Yes, my 15-year old Minolta is very happy with this borrowed Sony Alpha lens. If you're about to buy an older Minolta lens, check first its compatibility with your particular camera. Older lenses may not function well, as I discovered personally. One lens that I tested refused to autofocus on the Alpha, another makes a wrong exposure, and both worked perfectly with the Maxxum.

How do you know which model Minolta SR-1 it is? The visible clues are:
1. The pin is added to the shutter speed dial on model "B", 1960.
2. The meter mounting block is added on model "D", 1962.
3. Film counter moved from left to right side on model "E", 1963.
4. The location of the logo is moved to top facet of prism. Model "V", 1965.
The important change to the auto diaphragm system was made to model "C" in 1961. Earlier models have limited compatibility with later Auto-Rokkor lenses.

This housing's headed for the trash, however, because it's been in the shop three times over the past year, and the shutter still refuses to fire for long stretches at depths under 3 m. (The alert will notice that I only posted one underwater picture last Sunday--out of the SIX, included random misfires, that I managed to get off all day.)
"You must be putting the camera in the housing wrong." is all I get from Olympus. Huh? Last Friday, it worked down to 21 m and back up to 18 m, but there was this blank until I got back up to 3 m or so.
I never had the problem from March to July last year, so I assume that the little rubber pads inside holding the camera in place have worn.

Brierfield
There were 2 reasons for posting this image of the town of Brierfield, Lancashire.
1,to test the range of focus on my Carl Zeiss Jena DDR 135mm f3.5 lens mounted with the M42 to F mount adapter. This shot was taken from abut 4 or 5 miles away and when you see it at full size i'm sure you will agree it passes with flying colours. I posted this image without any post process sharpening and the clarity and detail is amazing.
If, like me, you own a Nikon D40 and think you need to upgrade you camera to improve image quality, then think again, I urge you to buy an adapter which will allow you to attach screw thread lenses and buy some old lenses. This lens cost me under ?20 from a local camera shop ( you may have to pay a little more on E-bay) and I have seen 50mm F1.8's go for ?25.
2,Brierfield is a town in a state of flux, once an industrial mill town whose main advantage was it's position on the leeds and liverpool canal which supplied raw cotton to the town to be spun and woven into cloth. It was a town which just got on with it...until the weaving industry died and the town along with it.
It's last large employer has now up and left town leaving a mega mill empty and for sale, it's other mills crumble around it and it's terraces of mill workers houses are being pulled down to make room for more modern housing ( or that was the plan, but now that the bottom has fallen out of that market, who knows).
The town is now mainly populated by 3rd generation imigrants who's parents and grandparents came to work in the weaving industry.

This is my first photo without Ms. Nikon. (That's her name by the way, just made it up)
Anyways, I told you all a couple of weeks ago that Ms. Nikon sorta broke, but still worked. A piece inside the lens sort of cracked a little. Well, I was going to take it in to Best Buy, but have been slacking since it still worked. Well today, I took one picture and it said ErRORrrr! I unscrewed the lens and the piece totally broke off.....grrrr.
Luckily, I rented out a Canon camera at school last week to prepare for this horror. So I unpacked it and snapped a quick one with Mr. Canon. He's ok I guess. But he doesn't make the same beeps as I'm used to with Ms. Nikon. Plus, I don't know what any of the buttons are and my remote doesn't play nice with him. O well.
Practially everyone I know has a Mr. Canon, so maybe I will start lovin' this brand over the next week, who knows. So, tomorrow I will have to say goodbye to Ms. Nikon for two weeks. It's going to be hard, but I think I can handle it.
And I'm not entirely sure why this photo is green, just sort of happened. I've been fooling around with Mr. Gimp lately, but he's no Ms. Photoshop, that's for sure. I just couldn't stand having to deal with regular looking photos anymore. I was created on this earth to edit photos with textures and trippy colors.
Yeah, I am crazy, if that's what you're thinking.... I DO give cameras and software genders, DEAL WITH IT!! I'm hyper.....

Nikon F
This is a CLA of a working Nikon F. That it was working is a tribute to how good these cameras are. Unique are the titanium horizontal shutter curtains.
The slow speeds were not bad and the fast topped out around 250. The lubrication got gummy enough to drag all the rotating and sliding parts down. The whole mechanism is much smoother and easier after the CLA. The shutter speeds are tricky to adjust but they all fell in line. All the nobs and wind lever move easily. This has a solid feel. Built like a tank, this design can keep working and working.
You can tell this is a rev 1.0 design because it has dozens of extra pieces and screws to hold them compared to more modern cameras. I've never had to adjust, align, and screw in place so many parts just to close a camera.
The Photomic N head is another story. It's missing it's two front screws which is apparently a common problem. This allows the head to tip up and the pin to come out of the lens fork. This will be another project to get the meter to work and hack some screws to pull it together.
Tomosy's book is next to useless to work on this. It gives you a false sense of guidance. Unfortunately my first moves committed me to way more repairs than what I wanted. I discovered too late it tells you nothing about putting the mechanism back together in real world terms. There is an order and set of dependencies that is more than "reverse the dissasembly". At least I had the repair manual that is floating around the web to figure out the mechanism. I only had to dissasemble and reassemble everyting 3 or 4 times to get all of it right. Pretty lucky.
