Officer Ann Nonette O'Donnell, Unit 429, lost her life on Christmas Eve 2010 because of a drunken driver.

She was a licensed Texas Peace Officer employed by the University of Houston for 13 months prior to her death at age 24.

Ann lost everything trying to help others. En route to prevent a reported kidnapping in progress, her car veered from the road and hit a tree. She died within minutes.

This unspeakable, unfathomable tragedy was caused by a drunk driver whose passenger refused to ride with him because of his dangerous inebriated state. When the passenger jumped out of his car, he tried to capture her and drag her back.

Seeing what appeared to be an abduction, a security officer called the police and reported it.

Our daughter Ann was the first to respond. Meanwhile, other officers arrived at the scene, determined what was really happening, and began administering field sobriety tests -- which the driver failed. He was then handcuffed.

Before they could take him to the county jail for breathalyzer or blood testing, the police were notified of Ann's accident, rushed the drunken driver to the police station and left him there while they raced to help Ann. The driver was released.

This wanton act of drunken driving cost our precious daughter everything. Her life was taken from her by a criminal who today walks free. Charges against him are being considered by the District Attorney, but no decision has yet been made.

The carnage on our highways will continue until:
-- first offenses are prosecuted as felonies,
-- zero tolerance becomes the law of the land, and
-- ignition interlocks are mandated for those convicted of DUI.

Quanell X, local Houston activist, calling for the resignation of Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal. The protest was held on Jan. 31, 2008, and 150 people or so showed up at the Harris County Criminal Court to join him. It was a very interesting thing to witness, and a lot of fun to take some photos of. I have plenty more where these came from, and I'll be uploading them as soon as possible.

Hot Branded Stellar Sea Lions

Hot Branded Stellar Sea Lions

A sea lion haulout on a rock island north of North Pass in Lynn Canal near Juneau, Alaska. It was a great trip and the photos are no comparison to being there to see, hear and even smell this rather large group of sea lions. Several of the sea lions appear to have been "branded". The one laying in the center appears to have 2 "bars" and the number 538. I was curious about the branding and found the article copies below on the internet.

Judge: Sea Lion Research Violates Laws

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 9:15 p.m. ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A judge has ruled the federal government must halt studies of threatened and endangered Steller sea lions because it did not properly asses how certain research techniques might harm the animals.

The National Marine Fisheries Service approved permits for research activities that include hot branding and tissue sampling of thousands of sea lions each year, said the suit filed last year by the Humane Society of the United States.

''We have concerns about the lack of environmental review, the structure of the research and how it's being done,'' Jonathan Lovvorn, an attorney for the Humane Society, said Tuesday. ''Our main goal is and has always been to have them evaluate the research before authorization. We want to see that happen.'' Lovern said they agency needs to better evaluate different research techniques, which range from minimally invasive to lethal. ''We don't oppose research in order to benefit the Steller sea lion,'' Lovvorn said. ''The question is are we doing that here in accordance with the law.''

The federal agency failed to comply with the National Environmental Protection Act by not preparing an environmental impact statement, and must give up its research permits, according to the decision on Friday by U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle in Washington, D.C. The federal agency had issued permits that allowed researchers to attach tracking devices to more than 700 Steller sea lions, brand more than 2,900 and allowed for the incidental deaths of up to 60 of the animals a year, according to court documents.

The permits do not authorize the intentional killing of any Steller sea lions for scientific study, the documents said. Fisheries service scientists said their research techniques are not harming the overall Steller sea lion population and are necessary to understanding the animals' unexplained decline and how to help them recover.

The research includes population monitoring and foraging and behavior patterns, said Kaja Brix, protected resources division director at the National Marine Fisheries Service's Alaska region office. ''The lack of ability to do the research certainly will have an impact as far as maintaining continuity in our research program and other entities in the state,'' she said. ''They may have to abandon those studies for the time being and resume them once permits are reinstated.''

The agency will have to revoke research permits from federal, state and non-goverment agencies studying Steller sea lions, including the Alaska SeaLife Center, North Pacific Universities Consortium, state Department of Fish and Game and the Aleutians East Borough. Brix said the agency is already conducting an environmental impact statement, but it could be a year before it's completed.

The Steller sea lion habitat roughly follows the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from northern Japan to the south coast of Alaska. The animals also live on California's Channel Islands. The number of Steller sea lions in the western stock dropped from about 200,000 originally to 35,000 animals in 2002, federal fisheries scientists estimate. Scientists do not know the original population level of the genetically distinct eastern group, but as of 2002 there were 31,000 animals, with numbers on the rise.

The National Marine Fisheries Service in 1990 listed both populations as threatened. The western population in Alaska was listed as endangered in 1997 after a dramatic decrease was documented.

Etty Hillesum, Holocaust martyr and diarist

Etty Hillesum, Holocaust martyr and diarist

Esther (Etty) Hillesum, Middelburg January 15, 1914 - Auschwitz November 30, 1943

In 1932, after having successfully matriculated in her "gymnasium alfa" studies, Etty Hillesum moved to Amsterdam where she enrolled into the University to study Law. She finished her Law studies in 1939 and moved on to study Slavic Languages in Amsterdam and Leiden. During her student years in Amsterdam Etty Hillesum spend her time among left wing circles without committing herself to any particular party. She had many friends, with whom she kept a lively contact. Because of Nazi persecutions in Germany there were German Jews who moved to Amsterdam, bringing their own culture and customs. For Etty Hillesum this was a very interesting World. Among these refugees there was a chiro-psychologist Julius Spier (1887-1942), whom she had met in 1941. Spier, whom she addressed as "S." in the Diaries, became her great teacher, but also her big love. Because of his unusual and warm personality he had a strong influence on her. He advised Etty to keep a diary to write down the inner movements and growth in her. Together with their mutual friend Henny Tideman (1907-1989) Spier opened the way to God for Etty Hillesum. He died of lung cancer on September 15, 1942. At that time Etty Hillesum's life had already drastically changed which made it possible for her to accept and deal with her loss.

On July 15, 1942, Etty Hillesum got a job at the department "cultural affairs" of the Jewish Council in Amsterdam. She only worked there for two weeks and didn't like it at all. On July 30, 1942 she was, on her own request, transferred to Camp Westerbork in order to work for thedepartment "Sociale Verzorging Doortrekkenden." As a member of the Jewish Council she had a special travel-visa, which made it possible for her to return to Amsterdam on several occasions. It was there that she became ill in the winter of 1942-43. When she had recovered, she refused the offers of her friends to go into hiding. She chose to stay with her people and returned to Westerbork, where she wanted to undergo the fate of her fellow human beings, she explained. On September 7, 1943, on a special order of Rauter, the Hillesum family was transported to Poland (except Jaap Hillesum, who was taken at a later stage). On November 30, 1943, Etty Hillesum died in Auschwitz.
Etty Hillesum left us an impressive literary oeuvre, which consists of Diaries and Letters. Already during the War an illegal edition was published. On Hillesum's request, the Diaries were given to her friend and housemate Maria Tuinzing (1906-1978) who gave them to an earlier friend of Etty, the writer Klaas Smelik (1897-1986) - with the task that he would take care of the publication. This wish, however, Smelik could not fulfil, because of the lack of interest in the fifties and sixties of the last century among publishers in Hillesum's philosophical views on the War and on the persecution of the Jews. When in 1979 his son Klaas A.D. Smelik tried again to bring Hillesum's wish into fulfilment, times had changed. In 1981 "Het verstoorde leven: Dagboek van Etty Hillesum, 1941-1943" (An Interrupted life) was published by J.G. Gaarlandt. This beautiful anthology, taken from Hillesum's Letters and Diaries and translated in many languages, was immediately a great success worldwide. In 1986, under the editorial supervision of Klaas A.D. Smelik the complete and unabridged edition of her Works were published with the title: "Etty: de nagelaten geschriften van Etty Hillesum 1941-1943." In 2002 the official English edition came out with the title: "Etty: The Letters and Diaries of Etty Hillesum 1941-1943."

Etty Hillesum's Diaries reveal the inner change of a young Jewish woman during World War Two. Striking is the contrast between her growing spirituality and the consequences of the ever increasing persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands. The Diaries show how Etty rapidly developed, through her meeting with Spier and other friends and the reading of existential literature, into a grown up woman, with a mature personality and her own life's vision.

She learned to accept herself and the fate of her people, without any bitterness. The Diaries have become a monument of spirituality and spiritual resistance against persecution and hatred. It is this quality that brings them up to date.

Her work has evoked a mixed reaction ever since her writings were published. Two points that stand out: A different perception on why Hillesum chose not to go into hiding and the insecurity of the Jewishness of her vision. A careful reading, however, of the complete texts show that much of these discussions go back to an incorrect understanding of the Letters and Diaries, partly caused by the one-sided selection of "Het verstoorde leven" (An Interrupted Life). The attempts to make Hillesum a Christian Saint or the efforts to question and confuse her Jewish

Burgers, 1934.

Burgers 1934 100cc JLO two stroke motorised bicycle frame# 25053 engine # 382/871.204/5937

In the depression years light motorcycles became more and more popular and a number of Dutch bicycle and motorcycle manufacturers tried to bridge the gap between the light motorcycle and the bicycle by marketing motorised bicycles.
From about 1932 these lightweights were equipped with heavier frames and sprung forks but were still pedal-assisted, as the law required. In the course of 1934 a change in taxation brought the motorized bicycle in the same class as the light motorcycle and this ended its popularity to a great extent.
This ladies’ model has been well restored. It was manufactured by the venerable firm of Burgers, who were the oldest Dutch bicycle manufacturers, the company being established in 1869.
From the end of the 19th century motorcycles were also manufactured, be it irregularly and in small numbers.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, near Keystone, South Dakota, is a monumental granite sculpture by Gutzon Borglum (1867–1941), located within the United States Presidential Memorial that represents the first 150 years of the history of the United States of America with 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents (left to right): George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2) and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. It is managed by the National Park Service, a bureau of the United States Department of the Interior. The memorial attracts approximately two million people annually.

Originally known to the Lakota Sioux as Six Grandfathers, the mountain was renamed after Charles E. Rushmore, a prominent New York lawyer, during an expedition in 1885. At first, the project of carving Rushmore was undertaken to increase tourism in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. After long negotiations involving a Congressional delegation and President Calvin Coolidge, the project received Congressional approval. The carving started in 1927, and ended in 1941 with some injuries and no fatalities.

As Six Grandfathers, the mountain was part of the route that Lakota leader Black Elk took in a spiritual journey that culminated at Harney Peak. Following a series of military campaigns from 1876 to 1877, the United States asserted control over the area, a claim that is still disputed based on the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie (see Controversy below). Among white American settlers, the peak was known variously as Cougar Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, Slaughterhouse Mountain, and Keystone Cliffs. It was named Mount Rushmore during a prospecting expedition by Rushmore, David Swanzey (whose wife Carrie was the sister of author Laura Ingalls Wilder), and Bill Challis.

Historian Doane Robinson conceived the idea for Mount Rushmore in 1923 to promote tourism in South Dakota. In 1924, Robinson persuaded sculptor Gutzon Borglum to travel to the Black Hills region to ensure that the carving could be accomplished. Borglum had been involved in sculpting the Confederate Memorial Carving, a massive bas-relief memorial to Confederate leaders on Stone Mountain in Georgia, but was in disagreement with the officials there. The original plan was to perform the carvings in granite pillars known as the Needles. However, Borglum realized that the eroded Needles were too thin to support sculpting. He chose Mount Rushmore, a grander location, partly because it faced southeast and enjoyed maximum exposure to the sun. Borglum said upon seeing Mount Rushmore, "America will march along that skyline." Congress authorized the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission on March 3, 1925. President Coolidge insisted that along with Washington, two Republicans and one Democrat be portrayed.

Between October 4, 1927, and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the colossal 60-foot (18 m) carvings of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of American history. These presidents were selected by Borglum because of their role in preserving the Republic and expanding its territory. The image of Thomas Jefferson was originally intended to appear in the area at Washington's right, but after the work there was begun, the rock was found to be unsuitable, so the work on the Jefferson figure was dynamited, and a new figure was sculpted to Washington's left.

In 1933, the National Park Service took Mount Rushmore under its jurisdiction. Engineer Julian Spotts helped with the project by improving its infrastructure. For example, he had the tram upgraded so that it could reach the top of Mount Rushmore for the ease of workers. By July 4, 1934, Washington's face had been completed and was dedicated. The face of Thomas Jefferson was dedicated in 1936, and the face of Abraham Lincoln was dedicated on September 17, 1937. In 1937, a bill was introduced in Congress to add the head of civil-rights leader Susan B. Anthony, but a rider was passed on an appropriations bill requiring that federal funds be used to finish only those heads that had already been started at that time. In 1939, the face of Theodore Roosevelt was dedicated.

The Sculptor's Studio—a display of unique plaster models and tools related to the sculpting—was built in 1939 under the direction of Borglum. Borglum died from an embolism in March 1941. His son, Lincoln Borglum, continued the project. Originally, it was planned that the figures would be carved from head to waist, but insufficient funding forced the carving to end. Borglum had also planned a massive panel in the shape of the Louisiana Purchase commemorating in eight-foot-tall gilded letters the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, Louisiana Purchase, and seven other terri

Gpa says: Gma's parents.

Harry Walsh says: The word on the left is fotografiya, which in Russian can mean a photograph or photography. Here it means photography. The second word means "of Krayevskaya." Krayevskaya is the feminine form of the surname, the male form of which is Krayevsky. It's a fairly common surname. Hence we have the name of the firm: Krayevskaya's Photography. Your parents-in-law are a handsome couple, as one would expect. Information about the newspaper: the only letters showing are the last two letters, which are -ok. There are, of course, many words ending in -ok in Russian. However, I bet the newspaper in question is Gudok, which means "whistle," specifically factory whistle. It was a workers' newspaper. During the perestroika period in the 1980s a new paper was started up in Moscow, no doubt inspired by the old workers' newspaper from an earlier time. Hope this helps!

for Jon's law firm that he's interning with this year, and well, a pretty common (for us) Russian experience befalls us. The address we were given, on the street we understood the firm to be on, was not at all there. We walked down to this building in the foreground and told ourselves, "no way we must have missed it," walk back the other way (luckily this was a dry run and not a day Jon had to show up for work). We eventually gave up and I rechecked a Google map at home. Sure enough, the address is in the other half of the missing building. Yeah, Russia.

To Whom It May Concern: I am the mother of a minor child who is in a Texas prison. I am requesting legal counsel/representation and funding assistance, on behalf of my son Bryce. This request is for Bryce to obtain an appeal under the "Post Conviction Relief Process," OR SIMILAR so that Bryce may collaterally attack, set aside and vacate the plea
and conviction, and the judgement based on, a "clear" amount of "ineffective assistance of counsel." I have collected a large amount of "Substanical Evidence." to challenge the charges against
my Child, Bryce Seton Vandergrift DOB: 09-09-94-TDC #01-66-1857.
My request for Bryce does include, Co-Counsel representation for his rights under the "Disability Act" Bryce has a hereditary, genetic Neurological Condition and it's Co-existing/Associated Disorders. My Childs history is "Well Documented," from birth till present. I have these records for your review. He waived his Miranda Rights.

Thank You In Advance For Your Consideration.

seeking legal assistance for wrongfully accused and convicted minor child. Arrested at age 15? for Capital Murder, now 17 years old. Brainwashed to say, do, sign, agree to what ever his defense attorney wanted him to. Including a plea deal, guilty without reasonable doubt, Bryce's admission to this crime is a senerio that his defense fed to him. It didn't happen the way Bryce thinks it did. My Minor Son Continues to believe he did what ever the defense attorney wanted him to believe. Substanical Evidence Exist.

by DMMPELLETIER 2010
VIDEO 3. Fred Cantu RIP 6-1997/1-2010. The victims are Fred and Bryce, Bryce is not Culpable for this Tragic Crime, though he believes he is. Bryce had become an easy target for being manipulated to take on others thoughts, plan and actions, as if they were his own. His only guilt is of being EXTREMLY GULLIBLE! because of the following. YOU DECIDE who is culpable/responsible... Is it nick? OR, the defense attorney? Is it the Psychiatrist who was treating my child between 2007-2009 bringing him all the way back to Feb 14th 2001! which is when in Florida, my TALL CHILDS previous and long time pscyhiatrist, psychologist and myself believed he required residential treatment? At age 6 we placed Bryce in the childrens hospital. Bryce came home 6 days later as his treatment plan was now showing promise. A few months later, my kindergardener was never again thought to be in need of residential home. Why did the Parole Officer write as if Bryce's years of success after his treatment plan began, had never existed? Why did he write Bryce was still not okay when he arrived in TX when our sons well documented history prooves otherwise. Who was the parole officer protecting? Why was the state doctor entering fallacies against Bryce in her findings? Why didn't the private defense attorney not defend his client? Was our very tall minor child "his client?" Why were so many lies generated between 2007-2009, and all of them were lies that harmed our (TALL) Minor Child and me, His Bio Mother? { dorothy marie-michelle pelletier }WHY? Por Que?
I have lived here in Florida since 1996. I agreed for Bryce to go live with his father David L and Step Mom Patricia R. Vandergrift, The only modification was change in primary residential parent. Bryce was to receive more opportunities living in a 2 parent home in an afluent neigborhood, gated community, backyard and a dog named Chip and another named Roxy. What caused our son to go from doing great all these years, only needing fine tweaking, to now being sententenced for a Capital Murder? Why in TX did I suddenly not have parental rights? Mrs. Cantu told me her husband said their son Nick did this to him. The defense had EVERYTHING to show Bryce as being Innocent-Not Guilty-Reasonable Doubt etc! On 12-31-2009, our son was set up, manipulated and framed. After the arrest Bryce was set up-manipulated, framed and now railroaded. We believe people"freaked out" when it received a minor accused of murder that had been being treated by the courts own psychiatrist! The Parole officer sest The Attorney to David, Bryce's father. I am low income and live in another state, but believe me I fought them hard! There were a few times when I beleived them too but they were lying to me, my son and to the public. Mrs Cantu believed her son nick did this. she said he "NICK" killed my husband, he didn't like him, he wanted him dead. Months later, someone had changed Mrs Cantu's mind. She now involved herself in fallacies against my son. She knows How, When, Where and WHY, her son Nick Framed my son for Murder and so did the "ADULTS" in control. Bryce believes what they wanted him to believe, no matter how many times they rewrote the tragic crime. God, Please continue

Confererate White House

From Wikipedia:

The Museum of the Confederacy is located in Richmond, Virginia. The museum includes the former White House of the Confederacy and maintains a comprehensive collection of artifacts, manuscripts and photographs from the Confederate States of America and the American Civil War (1861-1865).
Contents [show]
[edit]White House of the Confederacy

The White House of the Confederacy is a gray stuccoed neoclassical mansion built in 1818 by John Brockenbrough, who was president of the Bank of Virginia. Designed by Robert Mills, Brockenbrough’s private residence was built in early nineteenth century Richmond's affluent Shockoe Hill neighborhood (later known as the Court End District), and was two blocks north of the Virginia State Capitol. Among his neighbors were U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall, Aaron Burr, defense attorney John Wickham, and future U.S. Senator Benjamin Watkins Leigh.
Sold by the Brockenbrough family in 1844, the house passed through a succession of wealthy families throughout the antebellum period, including U.S. Congressman and future Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon. Just prior to the American Civil War, Lewis Dabney Crenshaw purchased the house and added a third floor. He sold the home to the City of Richmond, which in turn rented it to the Confederate government as its Executive Mansion.
Jefferson Davis, his wife Varina, and their children moved into the house in August 1861, and lived there for the remainder of the war. Davis suffered from recurring bouts with malaria, facial neuralgia, cataracts (in his left eye), unhealed wounds from the Mexican War (bone spurs in his heel), and insomnia. Consequently, President Davis maintained an at-home office on the second floor of the White House. This was not an unusual practice at that time – the West Wing of the White House in Washington, DC, was not added until the Theodore Roosevelt Administration. President Davis’ personal secretary, Colonel Burton Harrison, also lived in the house.
The Davis family was quite young during their stay at the White House of the Confederacy. When they moved in the Family consisted of the President and First Lady, six year-old Margaret, four year-old Jefferson Davis, Jr., and two year-old Joseph. The two youngest Davis children, William and Varina Anne (“Winnie”), were born in the White House, in 1861 and 1864, respectively. Among their neighborhood playmates was George Smith Patton, whose father commanded the 22nd Virginia Infantry, and whose son commanded the U.S. Third Army in World War Two. Joseph Davis died in the spring of 1864, after a 15-foot fall from the railing on the White House’s east portico. Mrs. Davis’ mother and sister were occasional visitors to the Confederate executive mansion.
The house was abandoned during the evacuation of Richmond on April 2, 1865. Within twelve hours, soldiers from Major General Godfrey Weitzel’s XVIII Corps seized the former Confederate White House, intact. President Abraham Lincoln, who was in nearby City Point (now Hopewell, Virginia), traveled up the James River to tour the captured city, and visited Davis' former residence for about three hours - although the President only toured the first floor, feeling it would be improper to visit the more private second floor of another man's home. Admiral David Porter accompanied Lincoln during the visit to the former Confederate executive mansion. They held a number of meetings with local officials in the White House. Among them was Confederate Brigadier General Joseph Reid Anderson, who owned the Tredegar Iron Works.

Maj.Gen. E.O.C. Ord & Staff on the South Portico of the White House of the Confederacy, 1865, Library of Congress
During Reconstruction, the White House of the Confederacy served as the headquarters for Military District Number One (Virginia), and was occasionally used as the residence of the commanding officer of the Department of Virginia. Among those who served there were Major Generals Edward O.C. Ord, Alfred Terry, Henry Halleck, and Edward R.S. Canby. When Reconstruction ended in Virginia, (October 1870), the City of Richmond retook possession of the house, and subsequently used it as Richmond Central School, one of the first public schools in postwar Richmond.
When the City announced its plans to demolish the building to make way for a more modern school building in 1890, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society was formed with the sole purpose of saving the White House from destruction.
