Walter B. Jefferson, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas

Walter B. Jefferson, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas

Wallace Jefferson has twice made history as the first African American Justice and Chief Justice on the Supreme Court of Texas.

Governor Perry appointed Jefferson to the Court in 2001, making him the Governor's first appointment to a statewide judicial office. Justice Jefferson was elected in 2002 with 60% of the vote in the contested Republican primary, and 56% of the vote in the contested general election. In 2004, Governor Perry promoted him to Chief Justice. In 2006, Chief Justice Jefferson earned more votes than any other non-federal candidate for statewide office.

Wallace Jefferson is the son of Retired Air Force Major William D. Jefferson and Joyce Jefferson of San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from John Jay High School in 1981, received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Philosophy from James Madison College at Michigan State University in 1985, and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1988 from the University of Texas School of Law. He is board certified in civil appellate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Chief Justice Jefferson developed an early interest in appellate law as a student of the late constitutional scholar, Charles Alan Wright. In 1989, he joined the appellate section of Groce, Locke and Hebdon in San Antonio. He founded his own appellate law firm with Tom Crofts and Sharon Callaway in 1991. Crofts, Callaway and Jefferson soon became one of the preeminent appellate practices in Texas.

Chief Justice Jefferson quickly earned a reputation for appellate excellence. He successfully argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court before he turned 40. Decisions in those cases have guided courts nationally in complex areas of civil rights litigation. His experience arguing at the highest court in the land, combined with his advocacy before the Supreme Court of Texas and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, brings a unique and valuable perspective to the bench.

This Fall, Michigan State University will honor Chief Justice Jefferson as its Outstanding Alumnus. In 2005, the University of Texas School of Law honored Chief Justice Jefferson with its Outstanding Alumnus Award. He received the James Madison College Distinguished Alumnus award in 2002. He was President of the San Antonio Bar Association in 1998 and the William S. Sessions American Inn of Court in 1999. Chief Justice Jefferson was recognized as a Pillar of the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio. In 2007, Chief Justice Jefferson's parents greeted students at the new "Wallace B. Jefferson" Middle School in San Antonio.

Chief Justice Jefferson has served on the Supreme Court of Texas Advisory Committee, the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct and was chair of the host committee for the 2000 Fifth Circuit Judicial Conference. He has lectured across the country on appellate advocacy and received national recognition from the American Bar Association for his 2001 speech celebrating Law Day.

Chief Justice Jefferson's wife of fifteen years, Rhonda, is a former public school teacher. They have three sons: William Douglas (13), Samuel Lewis (11) and Michael Andrew (8).

Kenneth Starr is one of the most prominent appellate advocates in the United States, having argued more than 20 cases to the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition to his career in private practice, he has served as a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit, Solicitor General of the United States, and as independent counsel in the Whitewater matter. He is a former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger and holds an master of arts degree from Brown University and a juris doctor degree from Duke.

Let's keep in mind who the victim is here, Dems.

Let's keep in mind who the victim is here, Dems.

Edwards' Wife Blasted by Democrats
By MIKE BAKER, the AP

RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 26) - Two weeks after a devastating revelation sent her husband into political exile, Elizabeth Edwards isn't getting the steady sympathy usually afforded to a woman scorned.

Instead, she's faced criticism from dedicated Democrats who think she was too willing to keep the affair a secret to help John Edwards' political ambitions, as well as her own.

At a time when she was expected to hold a prominent role in pushing an agenda of improved health care for Americans, she stands silent. While fellow Democrats converge in Denver to nominate Barack Obama for president, Edwards remains in seclusion in North Carolina.

It seems an odd way to treat a woman with incurable cancer wronged by a cheating husband, the latest in a series of deep hardships in life that includes the death of a teenage son.

But some former followers have questioned the recklessness of keeping the affair under wraps even though her husband — a former U.S. senator, two-time presidential candidate and the 2004 vice presidential nominee — said he confessed the affair in 2006, before the campaign began in earnest the next year.

"I think she's complicit," said Brad Crone, a Raleigh-based Democratic consultant. "Obviously, she knew. While she's the victim, she clearly didn't stand in the way of the cover-up."

It wasn't until earlier this month that John Edwards acknowledged publicly he'd had an affair with Rielle Hunter, a rookie filmmaker hired by his political action committee.
On a liberal blog that Elizabeth Edwards frequents, she explained why she stayed silent after her husband told her of the affair: "This was our private matter, and I frankly wanted it to be private because as painful as it was I did not want to have to play it out on a public stage as well."

Many people have come to know Elizabeth Edwards, 59, as a more forthright, revealing woman.

She wrote a memoir in 2007 that brought readers into the most wrenching moments of her life — the death of the couple's 16-year-old son and her 2004 breast cancer diagnosis. An attorney who worked in private practice and also taught at the University of North Carolina's law school, she first found out about the cancer the day after her husband and John Kerry lost their bid for the White House four years ago.

She has always had a passion for politics. Known for routinely writing about health care policy on the Internet, she has served as a visiting fellow at Harvard, where she held discussions with students and gave a speech after her husband dropped from the presidential race earlier this year. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said in June he would be "partnering" with her on health care policy, and she was expected to serve as a campaign voice to challenge Republican candidate John McCain on the issue.

Yet during a visit to North Carolina two weeks after Edwards admitted to cheating on his wife, Obama didn't mention Elizabeth Edwards — or her husband.

"It's a setback for both of them," said Chris Lehane, a Democratic consultant who helped President Clinton through his cheating scandal. "The question for her — as well as for him — is what is their foundation? What gives them a platform to engage in public issues?

"Their big challenge is convincing people that they will continue to be active in politics and they're going to continue to have a voice."

In a post on the liberal blog Daily Kos, where Edwards has her own diary, she pleaded for privacy and later seemed to explain why she stuck by her spouse and his presidential ambitions.

"An imperfect man with a truly progressive vision who spoke to and for those whom others ignored? Yes, that is who I supported," she wrote. "An imperfect man who had come to face his own imperfections and was seeking to redeem himself to those closest to him? Yes, that is who I supported."

Some responded to the affair with words of kindness, while others angrily suggested that keeping the secret was no less a sin that the one committed by her philandering husband.

"She knew she should not have participated in him running for president with this bomb waiting to go off. She did. She kinda loses my sympathy," wrote one poster.

"I believe we are all owed a huge apology, not self-serving claims for pity by both John and Elizabeth Edwards, who both knew about the affair and both decided to go forward and seek the Democratic candidacy, regardless of the Titanic risk," wrote another.

Elizabeth Edwards is famously a denizen of the Internet. But she has not posted under her own name at Daily Kos since that day, nor has she posted anything on the Web site of the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where she writes about health care.

A spokeswoman for the center, Andrea Purse, said Elizabeth Edwards still has a job there, but decli

Color Plate 22, The Swing. 1767, Oil on canvas, 32 5/8 x 26 (83 x 66cm), Reproduced by permissionof the Trustees, The Wallace Collection, London.

(The text explains that the male figure on the left commissioned this painting of himself and his mistress, the female on the swing. It says that the male figure handling the ropes is his Bishop. I hadn't been able to figure out why the Bishop? Was it that the nobleman was taunting the seat of divine morality, judgment and authority? or was the artist reaching for the connection between eros and agape? Another thing that bothered me was the beaver shot blocked by the covering of stockings, tights or pantaloons and other protective under garments I am assuming (the professorial librarian and the pullover sweater vests he often wears) and as I studied the heavy folds in the fabric at the back of her right knee, I thought maybe the veil of her underwear is a reference to the sort of schizophrenic theology demanding that maidenhood is the highest condition of morality and the heavenly realm while losing it is a requirement of salvation and a commandment of God. As I thought on these things, I went and got another, even more recent book with a whole chapter not only on the swing and blind man's bluff motifs in the work of Fragonard and his contemporaries in which I found another Harpocrates amor suggesting that the sharing of an experience like titillation must occur in one place rather than in the two suggested by the communicants...so I guess I'll have to copy even more pics.)

I saw 3 swings but I can only find 2 right now. The other I can find is in this book. You should try to remember that you got this to go with the artist prodding the model with his cane and lifting the hem of her pantaloons.

Although I first thought of this as understanding beauty in terms of sexual attraction, I have come to think that for this artist a beaver shot, especially a very graphic one as may be seen in modern pornorgraphy in which the model will hold the vaginal lips open with her fingers like an opening into the origins or creative depths of our mother the earth. (I noticed the putto holding finger before his mouth on the column to left but I didn't donnect until just now with those Horus as a Child statues and the others showing male children with their fingers held in this way. Harpocrates. cough cough as I suddenly recalled the Greek name.) I don't think that it was in this one that I first started noticing the cavern or grotto quality of the nature that surrounds the central figure but it might have since it is so apparent. The one I mentioned I have lost for now makes it obvious that the swing come from such an opening in the deep woods out into a clearing.

Fairly often, I get sort of obsessed with getting the picture copied straight and keep copying it over and over. When I do, it makes me think back to a day in class when Jim Svendsen led us through one of these pictorial essays under discussion---I think I have told this a time or two before---and I asked him if he knew of any kind of camera which could be used to photo such photos. I think I explained, "...because that's really a good..." referring to the beatiful state of mind created by the connected images. [The tall, blonde, slender, formly, female who said something about "pretty" just walked by again and although I didn't put my glasses on, I looked at her. She is as I described but I think she has on a very short skirt, one that barely hides her panties. the William Burroughs cough cough but of course I can't be sure since, as I said, I don't have my glasses on. A student age male with sort of spikey hair, a gray t-shirt with writing in block letters and, I think, baggy shorts just cruised me with a wide yawn at me as he scratched a cheek with one finger. I'm not sure whether the scratch was made as part of the vignette or if it is a part of his natural speech repetoire like Prince Charles when He meaningfully scratched his neck with the nail of one index finger as part of a comment on one thing or another. A Negro male, student age in a baggy red t-shirt just cruised me and said "no" to me as he passed. I think he was the one that played throat clearer yesterday for a while.the William Burroughs cough cough. I guess he's taken the place of the earlier ones who quite after only an hour or two.] I think I've described how I often think stupid inexplicable thoughts and then after more or less time articulate them. I think I said to Doug and Sue Sue Miller one time that we should go out and do a lot of nice things for them so they would leave us their house. They had a beautiful old mansion on Highland drive. I don't think it was that one at Grestone Manner but it was one something like it. I think about having said that with remorse all the time and think about loud sharp William Burroughs cough writing her a letter explaining it to her. At the time I thought, for some reason, it

Alberico Gentili, Oxford Professor

Alberico Gentili, Oxford Professor

Alberico Gentili (Lat. Albericus Gentilis; January 14, 1552–June 19, 1608), was an Italian jurist. He later became regius professor of civil law at the University of Oxford and is one of the first writers on public international law.

Alberico Gentili was born into a noble familiy in the town of San Ginesio in what is now Marche, in Italy. He studied law at the university of Perugia and graduated doctor of law in 1572. He was commissioned to prepare a revised version of the statutory laws of his home town, a task which he completed in 1577. Two years later, together with his father Matteo Gentili (1517—1602), a renowned medical doctor, and one of his brothers, Scipione Gentili, he had to flee from Italy because of their Protestant beliefs. The three first went to Ljubljana, Slovenia, the capital of the duchy of Carniola. From there, Alberico went on to the German university towns of Tubingen and Heidelberg. In 1580 he arrived in England. He was able to get a letter of recommendation from Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and began to teach in Oxford in the following year. After a short stay in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1586, he was appointed in 1587 to the regius professorship of civil law.

Gentili held the regius professorship until his death, but he turned more and more to practical work in London from about 1590. He practised in the High Court of Admiralty, where the continental civil law rather than the English common law was applied. In 1600 Gentili was honorifically admitted to Gray's Inn. From 1605 to 1608 he served as a standing advocate to the Spanish embassy. He died in London and was buried in the Church of St. Helen Bishopsgate in the City of London.

His son was Robert Gentilis, who graduated from Oxford University at the age of 12 and was made a Fellow of All Souls College Oxford at the age of 17 (below the minimum age of 18) through his father's influence.

Alberico Gentili wrote more than twenty books not only on law, but also on theological and literary subjects. Only his most influential legal works are mentioned below.

In 1582, Gentili published De Juris Interpretibus Dialogi Sex. This book shows Gentili as a staunch supporter of the bartolist method and an opponent of the French humanist jurists like Jacques Cujas, who applied philogical methods to the sources of Roman law.

Gentili's first book on issues of international law was De Legationibus Libri Tres, published in 1582. It was occasioned by a case on which Gentili's counsel was sought. In 1584 Gentili and Jean Hotman (1552—1636) were asked by the government to advise on the treatment of Spanish ambassador Bernardino de Mendoza (about 1540–1604), who had been implicated in the so-called Throckmorton plot against Queen Elizabeth I. Hotman was the son of the French law professor Francois Hotman (1524–1590) and—like Gentili—a lawyer trained on the continent who had come to England for religious reasons. He was in the service of the Earl of Leicester. Hotman, too, later published a book on diplomacy, L'ambassadeur, first published in Paris in 1603. Both Gentili and Hotman recommended that the ambassador only be expelled from England.

In 1589 Gentli first published De Jure Belli Commentationes Tres. An enhanced edition appeared under the title De Jure Belli Libri Tres. This is considered his principal work and a classic of public international law. The book is not only praised for its modernity and its skillful use of civil law concepts, but also for its closeness to the actual practice of international law.

After his death, Alberico Gentili's brother Scipione, who had become a professor of law at Altdorf, published a collection of notes on cases Alberico had worked on as an advocate for the Spanish embassy. The book bears the title Hispanicae Advocationis Libri Duo and appeared in 1613.

Kip's Castle

Kip's Castle

Kip's Castle, originally known as "Kypsburg," was constructed over a three-year period in the early 1900s by Frederic Ellsworth Kip and his wife, Charlotte Bishop Williams Kip. Frederic was a wealthy textile inventor and industrialist who also published several books related to United States tariff laws.

Charlotte is credited for the design of the "Kypsburg" building and grounds, cultivating an octagonal rose garden in the southwest corner of the property. After Charlotte's passing in 1926, the estate was sold and went through several owners, including Indian guru Osho in the 1980s, serving as a monastery.[1]

The building and grounds fell into a state of dilapidation until the law firm of Schwartz, Tobia & Stanziale purchased the property in 1985. Up until 2005 a considerable amount of work was done to restore the Castle to its original grandeur. In the early 2000s, The lawfirm wanted to develop townhouses on the property, however, found itself in various legal complications and lawsuits with Verona, and in 2006, the property was placed on the market. As a result of grants from the NJ Green Acres Program and the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Trust Fund, the County of Essex purchased Kip's Castle in March 2007. The property is now part of the historic Essex County Park System.

Offices for the County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Committee and Essex County Park Foundation will be located in the castle, which is also a meeting site for the twelve-member Kip's Castle Park Advisory Board appointed by the County Executive to provide guidance about the maintenance, restoration, activities, and growth of the facility as another asset for the Essex community. According to the county brochure, over time, Kip's Castle Park will become the County's premiere cultural resource center, supporting and promoting arts and culture throughout the region. Meeting space will be available for community groups, and non-profit organizations. A calendar of ongoing educational programming will be developed, and museum space will be created to showcase the history of the Essex County Park System.[2]

Falun Gong Practitioners Directing Attention To Human Rights Issues In China

Falun Gong Practitioners Directing Attention To Human Rights Issues In China

In April 1999 over ten thousand Falun Gong practitioners gathered at Communist Party of China headquarters, Zhongnanhai, in a silent protest against beatings and arrests in Tianjin. Two months later the People's Republic of China government, led by Jiang Zemin, banned the practice, began a crackdown, and started what Amnesty International described as a "massive propaganda campaign." Since 1999, reports of torture, illegal imprisonment, beatings, forced labor, and psychiatric abuses have been widespread. 66% of all reported torture cases in China concern Falun Gong practitioners, who are also estimated to comprise at least half of China's labor camp population, according to the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak, and the US Department of State respectively. In 2006, human rights lawyer David Matas and former Canadian secretary of state David Kilgour published an investigative report concluding that a large number of Falun Gong practitioners have become victims of systematic organ harvesting in China and that the practice is still ongoing. In November 2008, The United Nations Committee on Torture called on the Chinese State party to commission an independent investigation of the reports, and "ensure that those responsible for such abuses are prosecuted and punished."

Since the 1999 persecution, Falun Gong practitioners abroad have held activities directing attention to the Human Rights situation in China. They protest on a regular basis as the Spire in O'Connell Street.

Falun Gong has garnered diverse public attention on several occasions. The late psychologist Margaret Singer derided it as a "cult." Political scientist Patricia M. Thornton at the University of Oxford refers to Falun Gong as a cybersect, due to the group's reliance on the internet "for text distribution, recruitment and information-sharing among adherents".

Brian Edelman and James T. Richardson writing in the Journal of Church and State argue that the cult label applied to Falun Gong has no "empirical verification or general acceptance in the scientific community," and is merely a label that has been conveniently used to attack the practice. David Ownby, Director of the Centre of East Asian studies at the University of Montreal, states that Falun Gong is "by no means a cult." Livia Kohn, Professor of Religion and East Asian Studies at Boston University and a scholar in Daoism, says Falun Gong has "a high success rate in creating friendlier people, more harmonious social environments, and greater health and vitality."

mushroom Lawyer's Wig

mushroom Lawyer's Wig

Coprinus comatus, the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruiting bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales - this is the origin of the common names of the fungus. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores (hence the “ink cap” name). This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores.

When young it is an excellent edible mushroom provided that it is eaten soon after being collected (it keeps very badly because of the auto digestion of its gills and cap). If long term storage is desired, sauteing or simmering until done will allow you to either store the mushrooms in the refrigerator for several days or freeze them. Processing must be done whether for eating or storage within four to six hours of harvest to prevent undesirable changes to the mushroom. The species is cultivated in China as food.

John Armleder: Yellow Pages

If you let your fingers do the walking through these Yellow Pages, you won't find that plumber you're looking for, but you will plumb an inviting exercise in Conceptual art from Swiss artist, prankster, performer, and teacher John Armleder. He and his class at the Hochschule fr Bildende Knste in Braunschweig, Germany, who call themselves Team404, solicited original graphic works made on A4 paper from over 500 artists (Corrie Colbert, Sylvie Fleury, Thomas Hirschhorn, Odili Donald Odita, Michael Snow)--"be it a text, sketch, drawing, picture, or whatever suits your mind," the letter said. The works were displayed in a gallery, then each was randomly put together with another artist's work to be reproduced as a black double print on yellow paper. Armleder, whose own prints and multiples were the subject of a retrospective exhibition at Geneva's Cabinet des Estampes in 1995, dials a winner.

My photo of the 2007 Cincinnati skyline was chosen for the 100th anniversarry edition of the Cincinnati Bell Yellow Pages. This is the layout they chose, which has the skyline as it was in 1907 and mine from 2007. This was quite a thrill for me as it was the first time I have been paid to be published. They are also going to be using this for their billboards from what I have been told. The photo itself is not the best, but it was what they were looking for, so I guess I got it by default. But hey, I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.
