In the first year of life, the human brain more than doubles its size. During this period of rapid growth, the brain is especially sensitive to nutrition, particularly the omega-3 DHA. DHA is the primary building block of brain tissue, and adequate intake is essential for proper brain development, and remains necessary throughout life to maintain brain health. Baby’s DHA is made from 100% Arctic cod livers— no fish body oils or synthetic additives are ever used—and is rich in both EPA and DHA, as well as containing healthy levels of natural vitamins A and D. This safe and effective formula supports the proper development of the brain, eyes, and nervous and immune systems, and is third-party tested for purity and freshness.

one dollar meal for three hungry diners: cream of nettle soup

on our long walk, we found more fresh baby nettles. leftover bread made this soup thick and crusty bread fried in leftover chicken fat made the croutons. i also put in garlic and cream to push it over the top of deliciousness. it was almost free to make. and its better than any vitamin supplement: calcium, iron, vit K!

I washed the nettles well first with tongs as to not get stung, then parboiled them in water (which i saved to make a hair rinse see below) which removes the sting. then you can use the cooked nettles to make pesto, or nettle sauce or nettle soup

nettle leaves are dense and rich in essential vitamins and minerals. This bowl provides 2,000 mg of calcium!

Nettles are also high in:
• Iron • Carotene
• Magnesium • Vitamin A
• Chromium • Vitamin B
• Potassium • Vitamin D
• Zinc • Vitamin K

Roman soldiers used to purposely sting themselves with live nettles to keep warm in the winter. (you know, i am not that desperate yet!)

Some Arthritis sufferers report stinging themselves on their joints, claiming that once the initial slight sting has worn off, they have enjoyed relief from their joint pain for hours at a time.

People used to snuff dried powdered nettle leaves in order to stop nosebleeds. Nettles do have an astringent property that may help control internal and external bleeding.

To use nettles for a nourishing hair rinse, pour one quart of boiling water over approximately one cup of dried nettle leaves or four handfuls of fresh nettles and allow to steep and cool for 30 minutes. Strain and use as a final rinse after you have washed your hair.

New Insights into Vitamin D During Pregnancy, Lactation & Early Infancy

Vitamin D is a preprohormone that has profound effects on metabolism and immune function that extend far beyond the traditional thinking of bone and calcium metabolism. Researchers are only just beginning to understand its effects on various organ systems throughout the body-from epidemiological studies to its actions at the cellular level. Vitamin D has been linked to inflammatory and long-latency diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, tuberculosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and various cancers, to name a few.
