The empirical literature on the demand for calories in developing countries sests mixed results regarding the role of income and other socioeconomic characteristics on calorie demand. This study employs both nonparametric and parametric methods to examine the impact of household expenditure and other socioeconomic variables on household demand for calories in Tanzania, using recent survey data. The parametric methods include estimation strategies that ensure consistent estimates in the presence of behavioral endogeneity and measurement error. Under each estimation strategy we employ, we find a strongly significant and positive relationship between household expenditure and calorie demand, lending support to conventional wisdom that income growth can alleviate inadequate calorie intake. The results also show a negative and significant relationship between food prices and calorie demand, sesting that effectively targeted food subsidies for very poor households may play a role in improving their calorie intake.

With the introduction of the t6, Suunto is targeting athletes and fitness-minded folks who want to track performance and training goals. On the surface, it's apparent that the t6 is seriously trying to steal a bit of market share from the leader in the biz, Polar. After spending a little time with the t6, we found that it holds its own and offers some things that are truly unique, like the ability to track respiration rate, VO2max, and a new measurement called EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption).


The Suunto Training Manager software can track and display EPOC, VO2max, energy expenditure, respiration rate, and more when linked to a PC.
Until now, measuring these things required sophisticated lab equipment. Suunto has teamed up with a company called Firstbeat, which has developed a way to extrapolate a range of physiological measurements from heart rate alone. While we weren't able to independently verify the accuracy of this new measurement technology, Suunto and Firstbeat claim that the accuracy of the t6 is pretty darn close to that of laboratory equipment. If that's true, the t6 represents nothing less than a major breakthrough in fitness technology.
Give Me a Beat
The basic t6 unit ships with the wrist unit and a heart rate transmitter--which is worn around the chest and proved to be quite comfortable. The transmitter is coded, like the newer Polar transmitter units, so you never have to worry about interference from other transmitters--a common problem in race events. Typically, a heart rate monitor measures how fast or slow your heart is beating during exercise, which is an indirect way to measure aerobic capacity and other performance factors. The t6's Firstbeat technology takes this a step further by measuring the intervals between heart beats. According to Suunto and Firstbeat, this measurement can be used to closely approximate seven measurements, most important of which are related to EPOC. Using the EPOC measurement, it is possible to estimate how much one's training has improved overall fitness. If EPOC levels are high, the body is in a heightened state of recovery, meaning the training has been more effective. Likewise, lower EPOC levels reveal suboptimal training effect.
Other measurements, such as oxygen consumption (VO2max) and respiratory rate, are unavailable on any other wrist-mounted device. In fact, before the t6, they were available only to people like Lance Armstrong. Knowing oxygen consumption data is a valuable tool for anyone who is trying to increase performance.
Adding the Pods
In addition to tracking heart-related data, the t6 can track speed and distance--with a little help from some pods. Both the bike pod and the foot pod are cleverly designed little units that transmit data to the wrist device. We were impressed with the way the bike pod attaches cleanly and simply to the front fork dropout--no wacky zip ties and sticky rubber to mess with. Meanwhile, the foot pod is a durable little pedometer-like device that attaches directly to your shoe for greater accuracy. Both pods are fully weatherproof and add features like a speed alarm, as well as interval and lap timing.


The foot pod and the bike pod are easy to mount and deliver accurate training data to the wrist unit.
Training with the t6
The wrist unit's displays are easy to read and controls are fairly intuitive. We did have some trouble pairing the bike pod with the wrist unit, but once we were up and running, speed and distance data was accurate and consistent. The one thing missing with the t6 is the ability to measure pedaling cadence, an important data point for serious cyclists. A "cadence pod" would be a welcome addition, and it would bring the T6 in line with offerings by Polar.
We tested in the foot pod on a 3-mile jog and were impressed with the accuracy of speed readings. While GPS solutions also offer speed and distance measurement, the foot pod isn't dependent on a clear line of sight to the sky to get a reading. This makes it a great choice for indoor tracks or running on city streets with high buildings. As icing on the cake, the t6 also includes a barometric altimeter that can measure altitude, rate of ascent, and temperature. While these aren't vital for training, it's great to know how high you've been. Plus, you can brag to your friends about the frigid temps you endured on those winter morning runs.
Lastly, heart rate readings were steady and consistent, and we liked the t6's target heart rate zone alerts--perfect for those who want to stay under certain heart rate levels for specific training goals.
Making Connections
In many ways, the things that aren't displayed on the t6 wrist unit are the most interesting, and to view them, you'll need a PC. With the t6, Suunto has finally incorporated USB connectivity instead of serial, and it makes connecting the watch to the computer a breeze. The Suunto Training Manager software can track and display EPOC, VO2max, energy expenditure (kcal/min), respiration rate (breaths/min), heart rate, and ventilation. This data can then be used to build an overall picture of one's fitness level over time--an invaluable tool for athletes, as well as regular folks who want a clear picture of how their training is going. Before the T6, much of this data wasn't available to mere mortals, and it's nothing short of a revolution that anyone can now track their fitness level in such detail.

day 3: gratitude for health

So, as mentioned before, one of the new year's continuing resolutions is to get down to a size 8 clothing, which is where I'm happiest with my body and is a happy medium between the two sets of genes I carry. My "stature" genes fall firmly from my father's side. We are all short and stocky (some border on rotund). My weight since college has hovered in the 150 to 160 range, after a low my freshman year of 120, which I can't even imagine now. My mother's side of the gene pool is all super skinny, much to my older brother's chagrin when they were younger and could NOT put on weight, whatever they tried to do. I don't want to be that skinny. While my mother looks normal as a size 4 I would feel sick about the way I looked.

But that is not to say that I am unhealthy. My doctors have never said anything about my weight and my midwife considered my pregnancy gain normal and I've since shed those pounds. Mainly I want to look damn good again and, for me, that's a size 8.

So part of that is getting more movement in my day and part of it is being better about what I eat. The Treadclimber is fabulous! as I can go walking in the comfort of my own home (the stairs still wreak havoc on my knees so am holding off for the moment). And my diet is by far not bad but the soda has been a weakness so am going cold turkey off that (am substituting the southern sweet tea until I am over caffeine headaches then will step down again to get off that sugar). And we'll be back on a locavore diet soon, paying close attention to local meats and making our own snacks.

C is also on a weight-loss plan, hoping for a total of 50 lbs lost this year. At a pound a week, that is certainly reasonable. He wants a weight machine/set thing to really get started. I'm trying to be supportive of any forward progress even though I wish he would just start with what we have available NOW rather than "oh, if only I had thingie then I could do it." But. Baby steps.

The tip of my thumb is actually stinging as I type this. It's not bad but I can definitely feel something. My heart rate is steady at 78 beats a min though:)

I'm not happy at all with this picture. I was shaky because I was a bit scared so it's a bit blurry.

I first touched the spines on his back. The spines are nothing more than hairs - soft to the touch. I was surprised about this.

I don't know if I’m being psychosomatic or what but, I can feel pain in the tip of my thumb; not much but, enough to know I won't touch this thing again! Which means this blurry Macro is just going to have to do…sorry!

If I don't wake in the morning all my pictures go to the first person who ever commented - Riverman72 I believe! :)

The way I look at it; as much as I'm hacking through the jungle, what if one of these accidently fell onto my face, arm or legs.......

Celery kinpira is cheap, low cal, and yummy. Maki's instant miso soup is such a no-brainer I can't believe it took me this long to start packing it in my bento; having a mug of soup is really filling and satisfying!

Directions:

I haven't wanted to show this picture until he was getting better. Poor baby had conjunctivitis, upper respiratory infection and spasms, heavy sneezing, watery eyes, fever, weight loss and elevated pulse. He would have one day where he seemed much better, and looked pretty good, and I would think, oh good; he's on the mend. Next day would be awful again. He's been taking 3 kinds of antibiotics, and an eye ointment. He is not totally well yet, but doing much, much better.
Even when he was sick he tried to play a bit, and I thought maybe that was his nature, that he was just very quietly playful without a lot of oomph. Since he has been feeling better, he rockets around the place really fast, and leaps quite a bit, and tries to engage Montana in play. He will corner around the living room to the stair landing, and then tear up the stairs, leap onto the toilet, and from there, leap into the bathtub. He likes his water from the bathtub. Go figure.
They are getting closer and closer to each other without actually being buddies. They will now share different ends of the same bed. I think that is progress.

So far, Montana just had one day with one watery eye, and one or two sneezes, but cross your fingers. He doesn't seem to be catching what Cerulean has had.

This was my Lance Armstrong pose the day after I completed a 4-day 231 mile adventure (including a 105-mile leg).

I call that century ride the "fittest day of my life" since it came at the culmination of a self-motivated, life-changing 8-month, 90 pound weight loss, diet, exercise, and will power push of mine. I'm faster, stronger, and have more endurance than I did when I was on high school track. Last year taught me that nothing can stop you from a goal if you truly decide to go for it.

I was already heading downhill from there in this picture. Gained at least half a pound by then. : )

Can you see the Stone Fish in the picture? I nearly didn't! In fact I came so close to stepping on him I stopped my left foot mid stride as my eye caught sight of this Stone Fish from the light of my flashlight!

There is no water here! This fish is literally stuck in the mud! The tide was extra low tonight giving me extra yards to explore. I had no idea these things could live for extended periods of time out of water. The tide wasn't due in for another hour or so!

To be honest, ever since I saw and photographed the boy who fell victim to one of these creatures I have been longing for a chance to photograph the spine-needle of the Stone Fish. Tonight I got my chance!

I carefully pulled this thing from the mud and placed him on that ledge you see at the top of the picture.

My friend Jenni came up with this fantastic idea, and I threw in the Nilla Wafers.

Per Jenni:
1 Sugar Free Vanilla Jello Pudding Cup
1/2 tsp finely ground coffee beans
1/2 tsp water
1/8 tsp almond extract
enough cocoa powder to dust the top, probably about 1/2 tsp

mix the coffee powder and water together, then stir the coffee mixture and almond extract into the pudding. dust the top with cocoa powder.

Per Me:
Before topping with coacoa powder, put in two reduced fat Nilla Wafers. If you have patience, allow it to sit in the fridge for about ten to fifteen minutes to soften the cookies for that lady finger textures. Then dust the top with coacoa powder and dig in!

Seriously, if you're trying to watch your calorie intake, this is a great, simple way to get a tiramisu flavor real fast and not feel guilty about it!

Homemade Granola Recipe
for not overly sweet or fattening granola.
(I do everything organic below, btw.. buy purchasing in bulk, even maple syrup, it comes out to about $15/ recipe w/ goodies at third section, which is about 5 boxes of Trader Joe's granola in price/weight, but is way too sweet, and doesn't have any of the goodies that really make it great.):

drymix
4 c. thick cut oats (whole foods has the best price)
1 c. flax seeds (ditto the this, and the pumpkin seeds)
1.5 c. pumpkin seeds
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1.5 T ground nutmeg

8 oz slivered almonds (trader joe's package or whole foods bulk)
or 8 to 16oz of some nuts chopped like walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews

wetmix:
1/2 c. maple syrup (whole foods just had a sale on organic maple syrup)
1/2 c. oil (i like to use sciabica's orange EV olive oil, but canola will also do)
2 T vanilla
1/2 c. water

Additional goodies:
-- 2 cups raw cacao (berkeley bowl has the best price on organic ones in their bulk food section.. $16/lb but that is about 6 cups)

chopped dried fruits - do about 2 - 3 cups as well for one recipe:
-- white or green or purple figs (whole foods bulk seems to have best price on these at around $7/lb for organic.. )
-- french prunes (ditto these from whole foods)
-- sour dried cherries (Berkeley Bowl has great price on these organic cherries at $10/lb, but Whole Foods bulk has them as well)
-- dried blueberries, strawberries (again, WF bulk)
-- golden raisins (whole foods has these for abt $2/lb)
-- apricots, nectarines, peaches (farmer's mrkts or make your own.. haven't really found much beyond apricots at any stores)

Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Put wet ingredients into a small pan, heat on stove to low simmer, remove, and pour over the granola. Stir thoroughly. Then, put mix into a deep cookie sheet or a large metal baking pan, sprayed with a little canola oil (you can get a hand pump sprayer at William Sonoma and put in organic canola from trader joes and cut out the waste of buying spray oils which are not organic and far more expensive, plus environmentally unsound). Granola mix should be no more than 1.5 to 2 inches thick in pan in order that the mix bake properly. A pan around 16x20 should do it.

Bake on 225 deg. F for 45 min but stir at the 30 min mark. At 45 minutes, add 2 cups cacao, plus about 2-3 cups of dried fruits. Fold in thoroughly. Bake for 15 min, fold all ingredients again, and then bake another 15 min.

Everything should be nicely toasted but there should be no liquid and it should be mostly dry.

Let cool, store in sealed containers, and serve, with things like strawberries, blueberries, peaches or nectarines.

One of my favorite versions is to do 2 cups of dried sour cherries with 2 cups cacao. Or 2 cups of dried white fig and 1 cup of french prunes with 16 oz of cashews (in dry section) and then 2 cups cacao. Note that a lot of times the fruit seems too much or odd (the french prunes in particular), but once its chopped and in the mix, it gels, and gets very nice. Whatever you choose.. it's all delicious.. and much lower in fat or sugar than granola's from the store, healthier and more flavorful. Also, seeds and nuts are great for you and often not in store bought items or at that concentration.

Haven't made a fun dinner like this in a while! Hurray for days off! Fettuccine is delicious! Kabocha is delicious! Hurray for Fall! Oh dear!
Here's the recipe.
As usual, ogled a bunch of different recipes to develop a general idea of proportions, then threw together this little number. Decided to try making this without cream, because cream is expensive and the rest of the carton always goes bad before getting used. In the end, this was totally rich and creamy and fine with just plain milk (and a bit of butter).

For one hungry person.

100g Fettuccine
75-100g Peeled, steamed and mashed Kabocha* (leave some chunks)
(*Pumpkin is fine if you have no kabocha where you are!)
1-2 tsp Butter
1/2 Chicken Breast, cut into bite-sized cubes
Handful of Shimeji mushrooms
100ml Milk (not non-fat)
Salt
Pepper
Garlic Powder
Small ladle of pasta water

Melt butter in pan and add chicken and mushrooms, as well as a pinch of salt and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Saute until cooked and chicken is slightly browned.
Lower heat to medium-low-ish. Add mashed kabocha and mix around a bit, then add milk and mix until the kabocha and milk have thoroughly blended.
While cooking the sauce, begin cooking the fettucine in properly salted water until al dente.
While waiting on the fettuccine, simmer the sauce until slightly thickened, mixing often, and seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
Add al dente fettuccine and a small ladle of the pasta water and mix thoroughly and quickly so as not to overcook the pasta until pasta is coated nicely with sauce and chicken and mushrooms are distributed.
Plate and season with more fresh ground pepper and powdered or grated parmesan cheese to your liking.


The soup pictured is a simple onion and thyme soup that was a great compliment to the pasta!
I just seasoned as I went, but the recipe for two would look something like this...
1 onion, sliced to your liking
1 tsp butter
Couple pinches of salt
2.5 or so cups of water
2 packets of chicken consome powder
Splash of red wine
Splash of Worcestershire Sauce
A few grinds of black pepper
A generous sprinkling or so of dried thyme
Sprinkling of garlic powder
1 Bay Leaf

Saute the onions in the butter with a pinch of salt until slightly carmelized and golden. Add the rest, adjusting to your taste as you go, and simmer with the lid until tasty.

This is a kind of... low-carb, vegetarian version of Nicoise Salad. (So says the cookbook.) So it's really not all that much like the real thing at all. I could have put tuna in it, but I've had more fish in the past two months than I have in the average year, so I left it out.

It was really good - I ate it while the beans were still hot, with slivers of onion and a red wine vinaigrette, and yum. I'm definitely going to make it again.

I kid spits out more classic childlike one-liners that I should really take the time to record them down. Sometimes she’ll say some shit that is so funny and she’ll keep on rambling not having a clue or idea why what she said was so entertaining. If you can deal with the incessant motherfucking nonstop talking, she’s like living walking comic relief that makes you giggle and laugh at the most inane times throughout the day.

You better jump on it now. I’m guessing this is going to stop at some point very soon. I think at the mature yet still very much innocent age of 8, her one-liners are about to capsize. This will most likely come around the time when the first pubic hair germinates somewhere on her body.

Speaking of, in the past week or so Chloe has all a sudden become modest. Up until this point, the kid would run around naked in the house like a happy little unclothed clam. I’m not sure what quite triggered this this whole modest thing, but now she doesn’t want me to see her naked anymore!

I really don't have a clue, but it seems healthy and normal around this time in her development, I think? I guess. I couldn’t help but think how amusing it is that I saw her freely naked last week and it was no big deal. Suddenly it’s a HUGE deal. We have extremes here people with this kid.

I actually remember when I developed this modest behavior as a child with my mother. It was around this age too. I actually remember the last time I let my mother see me naked in the bath. Something triggered this, but I didn’t allow her to see my forthcoming famous penis after that. No pubic hair arrivals, just something made my mind up and that was that.

The next time my mother would see me naked as far as I know was when I was 21 years old. I walked into her room and there she is going through all my pictures of me and my girlfriend at the time and found some naked ones by accident. She looks at me and goes "your penis is just like your fathers".

This was one of the weirdest moments of my life mind you.

The shot at hand? Chloe sitting on the BART (subway, train) steps in Oakland after we bought a couple fedoras and an umbrella. That umbrella lasted about 1 day before it broke. I bought another, same deal. Umbrellas are fragile little fuckers aren’t they. Now Fedoras on the other hand, well .... you know ;)

We all have one...you try and be healthy. Try and eat a little better, excercise more, cook more at home... well, I have been attempting that lately, but yesterday my inner fat kid won out and made me buy Ben and Jerry's!

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for reduced-calorie mayonnaise. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for reduced-calorie mayonnaise in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. This is the first "real" Tudor costume I've tried to make. In this pic, I'm wearing:

-Cotton Muslin knee-length smock with ruffle collar & cuffs. *I made this with NO pattern, just piecing square shapes together :)

-Red Cotton petticoat with black satin hem facing or "guard".
*This is a simple 1-piece skirt, pleated to a waistband with CB seam (no pattern). I read about women of this era owning red colored petticoats & kirtles. In the Tudor Era, the color red was associated with good health, blood, ect. People believed that wearing Red, especially close to the body, promoted better health.

-Black Linen Kirtle with side back lacing: Due to time constraints and weight loss, this did not come out the way I wanted. I had to re-do the entire bodice last minute....but it worked for the event! I was shocked to receive complements on my dress, since I felt so PLAIN compared to everyone there. I sewed D-rings inside the bodice to lace up, and plan to switch to gromments ASAP next wearing. The flash of red at the hip is the petticoat. Back skirt is cartrige pleated to waist. Front skirt has deep knife pleats to reduce bulk.

-Cotton Muslin coif cap. This was easy. If only may hair was UP IN the cap instead of sitting below it....DAMN.

#gghealthkwest Jeff M Kansas City, MO Day 19! Ok so today has been amazing so far. We had a snow day from school which allowed me to sleep in. I went to the gym when I got up and had a great workout. I was so hungry after the gym I went straight to Genghis Grill for lunch. Dan the owner was there today and one of my favorite servers, Robert. As usual they were super nice and made my meal there even better. Today I had chicken, pepperoni, shrimp, dragon salt, yellow curry salt, pepper, onions, snap peas, broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, red curry and peanut sauce, and fried rice. At only 685 calories it will fuel my day until dinner. I’m not used to having such a filling lunch. It was so good and I am so full. Now I’m looking forward to getting a jump start on the weekend.
