day 3: gratitude for health

So, as mentioned before, one of the new year's continuing resolutions is to get down to a size 8 clothing, which is where I'm happiest with my body and is a happy medium between the two sets of genes I carry. My "stature" genes fall firmly from my father's side. We are all short and stocky (some border on rotund). My weight since college has hovered in the 150 to 160 range, after a low my freshman year of 120, which I can't even imagine now. My mother's side of the gene pool is all super skinny, much to my older brother's chagrin when they were younger and could NOT put on weight, whatever they tried to do. I don't want to be that skinny. While my mother looks normal as a size 4 I would feel sick about the way I looked.

But that is not to say that I am unhealthy. My doctors have never said anything about my weight and my midwife considered my pregnancy gain normal and I've since shed those pounds. Mainly I want to look damn good again and, for me, that's a size 8.

So part of that is getting more movement in my day and part of it is being better about what I eat. The Treadclimber is fabulous! as I can go walking in the comfort of my own home (the stairs still wreak havoc on my knees so am holding off for the moment). And my diet is by far not bad but the soda has been a weakness so am going cold turkey off that (am substituting the southern sweet tea until I am over caffeine headaches then will step down again to get off that sugar). And we'll be back on a locavore diet soon, paying close attention to local meats and making our own snacks.

C is also on a weight-loss plan, hoping for a total of 50 lbs lost this year. At a pound a week, that is certainly reasonable. He wants a weight machine/set thing to really get started. I'm trying to be supportive of any forward progress even though I wish he would just start with what we have available NOW rather than "oh, if only I had thingie then I could do it." But. Baby steps.

Ok, I just had to see for myself. The only thing I can recommend is not to touch these things. Yea, pretty ignorant I know...LOL!

The tip of my thumb is actually stinging as I type this. It's not bad but I can definitely feel something. My heart rate is steady at 78 beats a min though:)

I'm not happy at all with this picture. I was shaky because I was a bit scared so it's a bit blurry.

I first touched the spines on his back. The spines are nothing more than hairs - soft to the touch. I was surprised about this.

I don't know if I’m being psychosomatic or what but, I can feel pain in the tip of my thumb; not much but, enough to know I won't touch this thing again! Which means this blurry Macro is just going to have to do…sorry!

If I don't wake in the morning all my pictures go to the first person who ever commented - Riverman72 I believe! :)

The way I look at it; as much as I'm hacking through the jungle, what if one of these accidently fell onto my face, arm or legs.......
