Question Mark Butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis) Question Mark Butterflies fly in open habitats such as woodland edges and glades and along streams. There are 2 generations per year: one in early spring, and one in mid summer. Adults rarely visit flowers (though this one did), as the prefer to drink from sap, fruit, mud and carrion. The wings have ragged margins and a long tail. Above, they are a rusty orange with black blotches; spring forms have gray, violet tinged outer margins, summer forms have a dark forewing outer margin and mostly dark hindwings. The common name "Question Mark" comes from a small silver colored question mark marking on the underside of the hindwing. Pennsylvania - Valley Forge: Pennsylvania Columns The Pennsylvania Columns, by sculptor Henry Kirke Bush-Brown, were started in 1909 but a lack of funds prevented its completion until 1912. The monument, which flanks Outer Line Drive, features two tall granite columns. At the base of each column there are two bronze plaques containing the bas-relief busts of two military officers--Colonel William Irvine and Adjutant General Joseph Reed; Major General Arthur St. Clair and Brigadier General John Cadwalader; Brigadier General John Armstrong and Brigadier General J. Peter G. Muhlenberg; Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Harman and Major General Thomas Mifflin. On the top of each column there is a bronze eagle with outspread wings, standing on a granite ball. Valley Forge National Historical Park, encompassing 3,466-acres eighteen miles northwest of Philadelphia, preserves and reinterprets the site where the the main body of the Continental Army--between 10,000 and 12,000 troops--was encamped during from December 19, 1778 to June 19, 1778, the American Revolutionary War. After the Battle of White Marsh (or Edge Hill), Washington chose Valley Forge as an encampment because it was between the Continental Congress in York, Supply Depots in Reading, and British forces in Philadelphia. Undernourished and poorly clothed through the harsh winter, Washington's troops were ravaged by disease, suffering as many as two thousand losses, with thousands more listed as unfit for futy. Despite the conditions, the winter at Valley Forge proved invaluable for the young army, which underwent its first uniform training regimen, under the guidance of Prussian drill master, Baron Friedrich von Steuben. Valley Forge, named for the iron forge built along Valley Creek in the 1740's, was established as the first state park of Pennsylvania in 1893 by the Valley Forge Park Commission. In 1923, the VFPC was brought under the Department of Forests and Waters and later incorporated into the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1971. In 1976, Pennsylvania gave the park as a gift to the nation for the the Bicentennial. The National Park System established the area as Valley Forge National Historical Park on July 4, 1976. Valley Forge National Historical Park National Register #66000657 (1966) Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike In1968, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) bypassed a couple tunnels (Sideling Hill and Rays Hill) which could no longer handle all the traffic that the 1940's turnpike now carried. Also bypassed was the Cove Valley Travel Plaza. Nothing exists of the travel plaza except it's parking area, but the two tunnels are still there, and closed to the public. In some areas, the abandoned turnpike is still pretty good, in others, it's almost like a gravel road. I really had no idea how to access the abandoned turnpike, so using some maps and some guessing, I found an old road that went under an old bridge, parked there, and climbed a steep enbankment. At the top, I found the abandoned turnpike. Sorta strange standing there and thinking about all the cars that once whizzed by. CAN'T YOU SMELL THAT SMELL? SURE...... ITS BEEN TURNED OVER TO "NATO" NOW...........BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE .....WE ARE NATO...NATO IS US... March 20, 2011 Libya and the Left's Sickening Hypocrisy on the Use of Military Force By Michael Filozof An evil Arab dictator has been in power for decades. He personally controls his country's vast oil wealth. A sponsor of terrorism, he has provoked the West to take military action against him in the past. Islamic fundamentalists despise him as much as the West does. When his people rise up against him, he murders them ruthlessly. The United Nations Security Council has passed resolutions condemning him. An American president, intent on promoting democracy in the Middle East, demands that the dictator abdicate. When the dictator fails to leave, the American president authorizes the use of military force. Our "allies," including Great Britain, are asked to help. The endgame for the use of force is unclear. Sound familiar? No, we're not talking about Moammar Qaddafi and Barack Obama. We're talking about Saddam Hussein and George W. Bush. The difference is this: in almost the exact same set of circumstances, Bush was called "Hitler" by the Left. Leftists wrote plays and stories and movies about killing him. Democratic Party politicians, like Sen. Dick Durbin, likened our troops to "Nazis." Democratic Senators like John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, who voted for the military action, accused the president of lying. Mass demonstrations and protests, sponsored by the communist and socialist Left, broke out in the U.S. and Great Britain. Antiwar groups like Code Pink staged demonstrations at military recruiting stations, and had to be dragged shrieking from the halls of Congress. Opponents of the war shouted that Saddam's Iraq never attacked us, and that our military action was a violation of international law. The Left cried for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney. President Obama has just committed American forces to engage in acts of war against Moammar Qaddafi. Where are the protesters? Where are the accusations that Obama is a liar and a Nazi? Where are the groups of "artists" wishing death upon the "warmonger" Obama? Where are the cries for Obama's impeachment? There aren't any, and there won't be any, either. Obama - who made a fetish out of his opposition to the "surge" in Iraq, yet ordered a "surge" of his own in Afghanistan - has just committed American forces to combat action against a third Muslim country. No matter. He won the Nobel Peace Prize a priori. The Left regards him as a man of peace in its own mind; the facts are irrelevant. The Left's hypocrisy on matters of war and peace is sickening. When the Democratic Party is in power, it routinely commits America to war. When Republicans are in power, Democrats engage in shameless demagoguery and paint the Republicans as bloodthirsty warmongers. In the 1996 presidential campaign, Republican candidate Bob Dole raised some hackles when he said that the majority of American lives lost in combat in the 20th century had been lost in "Democrat wars." Well, Dole was right. Democrat Woodrow Wilson sent American forces to Europe in 1917 not for concrete American interests but for the hazy notion of making the world "safe for democracy." 100,000 were killed. Germany became democratic, all right, and in 1932 the Nazi Party won enough seats in the Reichstag to get Adolf Hitler appointed Chancellor. When World War II broke out in Europe, Americans wanted neutrality. Democrat Franklin Roosevelt wanted involvement, but public opinion would not allow him to send troops when the British were being bombarded by the Luftwaffe in 1940. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Congress rightly declared war on them; but commander-in-chief Roosevelt committed American forces first to North Africa, then to Italy, then to Germany. Japan, the only Axis power to actually attack the U.S., was defeated last. 400,000 Americans were killed. Democrat Harry Truman sent American forces to defend South Korea after communist North Korea invaded in 1950. The communists believed they had a green light to attack when Truman's Secretary of State Dean Acheson failed to include South Korea in America's defense "perimeter." Truman refused to use nuclear weapons to save American lives. End result: 50,000 American dead for a stalemate. Sixty years later, communist North Korea is still there, and now it has nuclear weapons. Democrat John Kennedy began American involvement in Vietnam, and Democrat Lyndon Johnson escalated the war, sending 500,000 American troops. End result: 58,000 American dead, and a humiliating withdrawal. When Republican Richard Nixon was elected in 1968, he promised to end American involvement in Vietnam; yet he and his National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger are regarded as "war criminals" by the Left. Democrat Bill Clinton sent A DSCN0311 edited-1 Sarah Bickel, Allegheny College student from Chester County, which is Joe's congressional district. She shared her respect and admiration for his work as her congressman. ERIE, Pa. - Rallying a crowd of more than 100 at West Perry Square with ten days until the election, U.S. Senate candidate Joe Sestak urged supporters to get out the vote and make sure Pennsylvanians know the difference between his practical approach and Congressman Toomey's out-of-touch views that include support for dangerous drilling in Lake Erie. "Congressman Toomey is not a witch but his policies sure are scary. I don't understand how he could ever think drilling in Lake Erie is a good idea, even after the oil spill in the Gulf," said Joe. "But Congressman Toomey has spent his career as a Congressman and lobbyist working toward the interests of big oil, saying regulation of oil companies would be criminal. He even favors having them pay no taxes, having said he would prefer eliminating all corporate taxes over the middle class tax breaks in the Recovery Act. And he offers no way to pay for it." Joe supports Lake Erie, understanding its practical importance to the community. It generates an estimated $9 billion in tourism revenue, and provides fresh drinking water to some 30 million people. In Erie County, tourism jobs generate an estimated $278 million in wages, and Lake Erie is the state's most visited tourist attraction, more popular than Hershey, Gettysburg, or even the Liberty Bell. In addition to giving big oil free reign, Joe has reminded voters of Toomey's policies supporting the elimination of corporate taxes (even though it would add $225 billion to the debt each year), privatization of Social Security and risking it in the stock market, and the removal of limits on campaign contributions, which would allow special interests to turn elections into auctions. "I'm relying on the common sense of Pennsylvanians," said Joe. "No one is going to be fooled by a wolf in sheep's clothing. That's Congressman Toomey. We're going to make sure everyone knows it." Joe Sestak was elected to Congress in 2006 after a distinguished 31-year career in the United States Navy, and he is honored to represent the Southeastern Pennsylvania district where he was born and raised. He is a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania. During his Navy career, Joe attained the rank of 3-star Admiral, served in the White House as Director for Defense Policy on President Clinton's National Security Council, served in the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and led a series of operational commands at sea, culminating in command of the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier Battle Group (30 ships, 100 aircraft, and 15,000 sailors/marines/aviators/SEALs) during combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. In our nation's time of crisis in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the Navy turned to Joe Sestak to serve as the first Director of "Deep Blue," the Navy anti-terrorism unit formed in response to the attacks. Joe is the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to either branch of Congress. He graduated second in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a Master's in Public Administration and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. Joe lives in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Alex, and proudly represents the 7th District, where his mother and many of his seven siblings still reside. Richard Scrushy Televangelist Richard Scrushy founded HealthSouth Corporation in 2004 which became the nation's largest provider of physical therapy, sports medicine and other outpatient services. Scrushy was ousted from his job in 2003 after a criminal investigation discovered accounting fraud of $2.7 billion. More than a dozen former executives acknowledged participating in the fraud before Alice Martin, the U.S. Attorney in Birmingham, filed charges against Scrushy. After leaving HealthSouth Scrushy purchased 12 months of air time on a local TV station and began his daily television minstry show. Critics of Scrushy's show saw the show as a cynical attempt to generate goodwill among potential jurors in the Birmingham area, which is about 70% African-American. (5) Milner House Background of Milner Gardens & Woodland Horatio "Ray" Milner was born in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1889. He attended Kings College, Nova Scotia and was graduated at age 20. He was called to the bar in 1911 after receiving a law degree from Dalhousie University. After serving in WWI, he was made Kings Counsel. Ray Milner retired in 1969 at age 80 after an exceptional career. A renowned philanthropist and businessperson, he had been the chair and director of several companies as well as a partner in the law firm Milner and Steer. As one of his many achievements, Mr. Milner was a founding director of Canadian Utilities and was instrumental in the formation and growth of the company. He was made a companion of the Order of Canada in December, 1969. Three universities awarded him honorary doctorates. The 28 hectare (70 acre) estate at Qualicum was Mr. Milner’s retreat from his busy business life in Alberta. He purchased the estate in 1937 and began to work on the garden with his first wife, Rina. Both loved the garden and forest. Sadly, however, Rina passed away in 1952. More extensive work on the 4 hectare (10 acre) garden portion of the estate was started in 1954 after Ray’s marriage to his second wife, Veronica. Veronica named the estate "Long Distance". In her words, "We called this house this name because it was so far away from my old home, and because the telephone was always ringing for him!" Mrs. Veronica Milner was a fascinating person. Born of the British aristocracy, she was the widow of Desmond Fitzgerald, 28th Knight of Glin, County Limerick, Ireland. Her mother was a cousin of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Both Churchill and Mrs. Milner were descended from the First Duke of Marlborough, and thus were related to Diana, Princess of Wales. Indeed, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited the garden in 1986. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed at the estate for three days in October, 1987. Mrs. Milner’s artist’s eye and horticultural expertise combined to shape the garden. She was an accomplished artist and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art and Commerce. Her elegant pastel botanicals and rich oils cover the walls of the residence at Long Distance. Mrs. Milner was a member of the Founding Committee of the VanDusen Gardens in Vancouver, the University of Alberta Devonian Botanical Garden, the Royal Horticultural Society and a Fellow of the Garden Conservancy. She was also a member of the International Dendrology Society. The aims of this Society are "to promote the study of woody plants and shrubs, and to conserve and protect those that are rare and endangered." Mrs. Milner acquired many of the trees and shrubs at the estate when she accompanied her husband on his many business trips abroad. The estate was acquired by Vancouver Island University in 1996. In May, 1996, the garden was dedicated as "The Milner Gardens" in recognition of Ray and Veronica Milner. VIU’s goal is to maintain the garden in perpetuity for education and the community’s benefit in Ray Milner’s memory. Mrs. Milner passed away in her home at "Long Distance" on November 5, 1998. Vysehrad Cemetery 3 Milada Horakova (25 December 1901 - 27 June 1950) was a Czech politician, born as Milada Kralova in Prague and then studied law at the Charles University. She graduated in 1926 and then worked at the Prague City Council. In the same year she graduated, she entered the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party, despite the misleading name a strong opponent of the Nazis. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany in 1939, she joined the underground resistance movement, but was arrested by the Gestapo in 1940. She was initially sentenced to death, but later her punishment was reduced to life imprisonment and Horakova was sent to the concentration camp Terezin and then to various prisons in Germany. After the liberation in May 1945, she returned to Prague, rejoining her party. She was elected a Member of Parliament, where she remained until the Communist coup in February 1948, when she resigned. Even though she was urged by her friends to leave Czechoslovakia, she remained in the country and was still politically active. On 27 September 1949 she was arrested and eventually accused of being the leader of a supposed plot to overthrow the Communist regime. The StB, a Czechoslovak secret police infamous for brutal interrogation methods, tried to break the group of the alleged plotters and forced them to confess to treason and conspiracy using both physical and psychological torture. The trial of her and her twelve colleagues began on 31 May 1950. It was intended to be a show trial like those of the Soviet Great Purges in the 1930s, broadcast on the radio and even supervised by Soviet advisors. The trial had a screenplay which the accused had to follow, but on several occasions they managed to get out of their roles. Horakova stood firm and defended herself and her ideals even though she knew that such fight could only worsen her conditions and the final result. The State's prosecutor was Dr. Josef Urvalek. She was sentenced to death along with three of her co-defendants on 8 June 1950. Many famous people, notably Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill and Eleanor Roosevelt, petitioned for her life, but in spite of this the sentence was confirmed and she was hanged in Pankrac Prison on 27 June 1950. She was 48 years old. The verdict was cancelled in June 1968 during the Prague Spring, but because of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia that followed, Horakova's reputation was not fully rehabilitated until after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. June 27, the day of her execution, was declared "Commemoration day of the victims of the Communist regime" in the Czech Republic as of the year 2004. On 1 November 2007, Ludmila Brozova-Polednova, the prosecutor in the Horakova trial, was sentenced to 8 years in prison, 57 years after her crime, at the age of 86. A major thoroughfare in Prague 6 was re-named in her honor in 1990. winston law firm The fifth volume of Churchill's Nobel-Prize winning six-part chronicle of World War II.
