This furnishing of painted pine was restored to its approximate period colors. This was a built-in piece in Mr. Jaffrey’s home in the seashore town of Portsmouth, NH. The plates and bowls displayed are examples of what he had recorded in his household inventory at the time. The woodworker artisan is unknown.

The detail is stunning and contains several botanical details:

--The side-panels have six grooves with overlapping leaf-like depictions from the top and bottom. This leaf representation repeats in a larger dimension framing the outer band of the half circle canopy. The design is abstract and could be a representation of any grass-like plant stalk. I suggest that it most represents the layered leaf structure of maize/corn. Mr. Jaffrey and the artisan would have known this new world plant in 1730. European colonists learned about corn from their encounters with the Native American tribes who grew it and revered it. As a food crop, it most likely saved many people and animals from starvation. Today, corn is emblematic of the complex and profound impact that Europeans and Native Americans people have had on each other in North, South and Central America and a very important crop.

--Oak leaf depictions occur in two places: in the corners of the cornice and at the center of the hallowed fan. Oak leaves and trees have been iconic to humans since ancient times. One reference states that the Celts worshipped the oak and was the sacred tree of Juniper in pagan mythology. In North America, there are 60 native oak species, divided in to the white oak group and the red oak group. Leaves of the white oak group are rounded and of the red oak group pointed. The leaves carved on this furniture are rounded which may have been the intent of the artist or the limitation of her woodworking tools. Most commonly, the oak has served as a symbol of strength, and the “tree of life”. Conversely, the fruit of the oak, acorns, carry the weight of some human imperfections: sterility and lack of productivity perhaps because of their use as pig fodder. (Impelluso pg. 62)

--The center of the fan holds a cluster of small-globed fruit or seeds, painted yellow surrounded by petals or leaves of vermillion. This could represent a fruit or a flower; they are on the botanical continuum. This could be a pomegranate, which is a common botanical symbol for fertility or it could be a flower abstraction. Generally, flowers in art have been emblematic of beauty and of life’s brevity.

One can order to these shops and use the ample sitting arrangements they have made on this floor. I recommend to take the glass shielded window seats to enjoy the nice view.
