I couldn’t sleep I was so excited, thinking about carrots, butter lettuce, mesculen and radish seeds that can go into the garden soon. There are potatoes that I can put upstairs in egg cartons under the skylights to get them to sprout in 6 weeks, there is an equestrian center we can get horse shit to amend the soil, hot peppers and summer savory and sweet onions that I can start in seed trays this week.

Oh the joy and boon from a generous neighbour willing to share her garden with us. We’ll have to weed and water the entire thing for two months while she goes to Brazil, and in exchange we get three prime rows of garden with wonderful rich soil. We dug up some beets and Jerusalem artichokes with our hands and the soil was like brown velvet of a colt. Those tubers will stay there as they come back each year. She and I are like minded and want to do lasagne style gardening, mulching, seed collecting and planting fruit trees. On two large expanses of grassland she asked me what I thought she should plant. A walnut tree she said on one side? How about a Fuji persimmon on the other side? “Oh yes!” she declared with a big smile, “that would be beautiful.”

The back part of the garden is herbs and flowers in the shape of an Arabic star, a walkable labyrinth. She is an herbal scholar, retired teacher and world traveller who walks through her travels. She already has nectarines, apples, three types of plums, big purple figs, three pomegranates, hazelnuts, and many canes of raspberries, cassis and red currants. The center of the garden has a big cistern for catching water and leading to the riverside pipes and hoses attached to a pump fill up the supply in the dry months. I can grow Indian corn! Bean dreams and snap peas fill my head as I sit down now to make a garden plan. What a dream come true.

Advice anyone? What to do first and things that have worked well for you?

Little Brown Bat

Little Brown Bat

Bats make up one quarter of all mammal species and are the only mammal that can truly fly. Despite a common myth, they can see quite well.

Bats hibernate in winter for 6-8 months. During this time, their heart rate slows down to 20 beats per minute, respiration decreases, and the body temperature drops within one degree of the surrounding air temperature. They can also save energy during heavy summer rainstorms, high winds, or cool temperatures by going into 'torpor', which is similar to hibernation.

Bats control insect populations (eating up to 600 mosquitoes in one hour), pollinate flowers, and disperse seeds of many forest trees. Their droppings (guano) even support an entire ecosystem of organisms that are useful in detoxifying wastes, improving detergents, producing a fuel called gasohol, and antibiotics.

Although little brown bat populations are secure, 40% of North American bat species are threatened or endangered. Around the world, bat populations are droppping at alarming rates. Four Canadian bat species have been listed as vulnerable by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC): fringed myotis, keen's long-eared, pallid, and spotted bats. Reasons for decline include loss of habitat, pollution, pesticides, disease, and predation (hawks, owls, trout, and small carnivores).

"I am Essex born.." the story of Denise Levertov

This is my favourite photo of the poet Denise Levertov. I’m not sure when it was taken, sometime in the mid sixties judging by the spectacles and the floral top. Levertov would have been in her mid forties but she was always youthful looking as can be seen from the other photo below taken at the Living Theatre in 1959 when she was in her mid thirties and already an established poet and academic but looks like a girl in her twenties.

Although she was born in 1924 on the outskirts of London at number 5 Mansfield Road in the staunchly suburban Ilford her background, for the time, was improbably exotic. Her father, Paul was born Feivel Levertov, a Russian Hassidic Jew in the town of Orsha, Belarus. Beatrice Levertov nee Spooner-Jones was a Welsh Congregationalist who had met her husband in Constantinople. Levertov had a sister, Olga, who was five years older than her. The two sisters were educated at home in an intensely intellectual household, their mother read Tolstoy and Conrad out loud over the dinner table, and Denise harboured ambitions to be a writer from an early age. When she was 12 she wrote to TS Eliot enclosing some of her poems and the poet wrote her a two page letter of encouragement in response. During the blitz she worked in London as a nurse and just after the war she met and married the American writer Mitchell Goodman and moved with him to the United States where she lived in New York and then, when the couple separated, in Seattle. She published over 30 books, mainly of poetry and during the sixties became heavily politicised by the Vietnam War and was a leading activist in the anti-war protest movement. Despite her anti-authoritarian stance she held teaching posts at various universities including MIT, Tufts and Stanford. After a long illness she died of lymphoma in 1997.

Levertov had an exiles romantic attachment to her family background and the place she grew up in. This attachment was expressed most eloquently in “Tesserae” the book of memoirs she published shortly before her death and in her poems “A Map of the Western Part of the County of Essex in England” and her elegy for her dead sister “Olga poems”. Her father came from a distinguished family of Hassidim, one of his ancestors was the miracle working Rabbi Schneur Zalman, the Rav of White Russia, who as a child was so precociously clever that at 12 his teachers sent him home from the yeshiva with instructions not to bother returning as there was nothing else they could teach him and at his Bar-mitzvah address spoke with such passion, prescience and learning that the community immediately pronounced him an 'Iluy', a prodigy of learning. Feivel Levertov was also an outstanding scholar and in “Tesserae” Levertov recounts an episode when her 8 or 9 year old father picked up a scrap of paper in the snow “about a boy like himself who – it said – was found in the Temple expounding the scriptures to the old, reverent, important rabbis!” Entranced he took the scrap of paper home to show his father who was furious, tore the paper to shreds and threw it in the fire. It was, of course, the story of Jesus and Fevel’s fascination was prophetic because a few years later, as a student in Germany at a Rabbinical Seminary , he came across a copy of the Gospels translated into Hebrew. These he read clandestinely and as he read he became stirred by a ‘profound and shaking new conviction’ that this man, this renegade Palestinian Jew who had died during the height of the Roman empire, really was the Messiah. Paul Levertov became a JBJ, a Jewish Believer in Jesus, had himself baptised as Paul Philip and for fifteen years became a professional missionary visiting Jewish communities in places as far apart as Hungary, Bosnia, Egypt and Palestine. In 1910 took a post as Evangelist in Constantinople offered to him by the United Free Church of Scotland where he met Beatrice Spooner-Jones, a teacher at the Scottish mission school. Beatrice was an orphan from Holywell who had been brought up in the guardianship of her uncle, a Congregationalist minister who consented, when she 19, to her going abroad. Her first hope had been to go to Paris but her horrified uncle rejected the suggestion out of hand, the French capital being a totally unsuitable place for an unattached young woman. He agreed to the more dubious proposition of Constantinople because it was to teach at a church school. So the naive young Welsh woman who spoke no language other than English and had only previously set foot outside of Wales to visit Liverpool and Chester set off unaccompanied to travel across Europe and take up residence in the Sublime Porte.

The couple were married in 1911 and lived in Warsaw until the outbreak of the first World War when, as a Russian citizen, Paul was placed under house arrest and was technically a prisoner of war for the duration of hostilities. After the war Beatrice persuaded Paul to leave battle ravaged Europe and return with her to Wales wher

Cydonia oblonga

Cydonia oblonga

From Wikipedia -
The quince, or Cydonia oblonga, is the sole member of the genus Cydonia and native to warm-temperate southwest Asia in the Caucasus region. It is a small deciduous tree, growing 5–8 m tall and 4–6 m wide, related to apples and pears, and like them has a pome fruit, which is bright golden yellow when mature, pear-shaped, 7–12 cm long and 6–9 cm broad.
The immature fruit is green with dense grey-white pubescence, most of which rubs off before maturity in late autumn when the fruit changes colour to yellow with hard, strongly perfumed flesh. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple, 6–11 cm long, with an entire margin and densely pubescent with fine white hairs. The flowers, produced in spring after the leaves, are white or pink, 5 cm across, with five petals.

Quince is used as a food plant by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Brown-tail, Bucculatrix bechsteinella, Bucculatrix pomifoliella, Coleophora cerasivorella, Coleophora malivorella, Green Pug and Winter Moth.

Turkey ranks first in world quince production by producing a quarter of the total world production.

List of the cultivars
Bereczcki, Champion, Cooke’s Jumbo (Syn. Jumbo), Dwarf Orange, Gamboa, Le Bourgeaut, Lescovacz, Ludovic, Maliformis, Meeches Prolific, Morava, Orange (Syn. Apple quince), Perfume, Pineapple, Portugal (Syn. Lusitanica), Siebosa, Smyrna, Van Deman, Vrajna (Syn. Bereczcki).

The modern name originated in the 14th century as a plural of quoyn, via Old French cooin from Latin cotoneum malum / cydonium malum, ultimately from Greek ???????? ?????, kydonion melon "Kydonian apple". The quince tree is native to Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Pakistan and was introduced to Syria, Croatia, Bosnia, Turkey, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and Bulgaria.

Cultivation of quince may have preceded apple culture, and many references translated to "apple", such as the fruit in Song of Solomon, may have been to a quince. Among the ancient Greeks, the quince was a ritual offering at weddings, for it had come from the Levant with Aphrodite and remained sacred to her. Plutarch reports that a Greek bride would nibble a quince to perfume her kiss before entering the bridal chamber, "in order that the first greeting may not be disagreeable nor unpleasant" (Roman Questions 3.65). It was a quince that Paris awarded Aphrodite. It was for a golden quince that Atalanta paused in her race. The Romans also used quinces; the Roman cookbook of Apicius gives recipes for stewing quince with honey, and even combining them, unexpectedly, with leeks. Pliny the Elder mentioned the one variety, Mulvian quince, that could be eaten raw. Columella mentioned three, one of which, the "golden apple" that may have been the paradisal fruit in the Garden of the Hesperides, has donated its name in Italian to the tomato, pomodoro.

Quince is resistant to frost and requires a cold period below 7 °C to flower properly. The tree is self fertile, however yield can benefit from cross fertilization. The fruit can be left on the tree to ripen further which softens the fruit to the point where it can be eaten raw in warmer climates, but should be picked before the first frosts.

Most varieties of quince are too hard, astringent and sour to eat raw unless 'bletted' (softened by frost and subsequent decay). They are used to make jam, jelly and quince pudding, or they may be peeled, then roasted, baked or stewed. The flesh of the fruit turns red after a long cooking time. The very strong perfume means they can be added in small quantities to apple pies and jam to enhance the flavour. Adding a diced quince to apple sauce will enhance the taste of the applesauce with the chunks of relatively firm, tart quince. The term "marmalade", originally meaning a quince jam, derives from "marmelo," the Portuguese word for this fruit. The fruit, like so many others, can be used to make a type of wine.

In Iran and other parts of the Middle East, the dried pits of the fruit are used to treat sore throat and to relieve cough. The pits are soaked in water; the viscous product is then drunk like cough medicine. It is commonly used for children, as it is alcohol free and 100% natural. A variety of quince which is grown in the Middle East, does not require cooking and is often eaten raw.

In Europe, quinces are commonly grown in central and southern areas where the summers are sufficiently hot for the fruit to fully ripen. They are not grown in large amounts; typically one or two quince trees are grown in a mixed orchard with several apples and other fruit trees.

Charlemagne directed that quinces be planted in well-stocked orchards. Quinces are mentioned for the first time in an English text in the later 13th century, though cultivation in England is not very successful due to inadequate summer heat to ripen the fruit fully. Instead Chaenomeles bushes are grown - their

Deep Red Galax

Deep Red Galax

These leaves growing in a sunny spot have turned a deep, dark red. The color is caused by anthocyanins, phenolic pigments synthesized in the leaf cells and stored inside their vacuoles. Once the leaves on the trees come out and shade the forest floor, these leaves will turn green again.

Galax grows in the forested higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains and its leaves are very popular with florists to add as decorative material to bouquets and floral arrangements. They are one of a select few plants that are still gathered from the wild for commercial use as they are very hard to grow outside of their natural habitat, and they are sold in bunches of leaves. Federal restrictions on harvest help to protect it, and it is not yet considered an endangered plant, but demand has increased to the point that it may exceed sustainable supply. They are often poached from the wild for their commercial value, often at rates of 4000-5000 leaves per harvester per day, beyond federal regulations. Please leave them growing where they are if you see them in the wild, and you can help protect these plants by asking your florist to refrain from using Galax leaves in your floral arrangements until research has figured out a way how to cultivate these for commercial use.

A technical question to my photographically more experienced friends: As you can see, these leaves are very shiny. If I get a polarizer, will that cut down on the light reflection on these?

Blindboxes are priced at $37.50 (plus shipping) each and 3 packs are $105 (plush shipping) each.

There will also be a few surprise releases going on sale along side Edition D in matching colours...

Backstory

With global bee population critically low and colonies patchy at best, growing concern that the reintroduction and repair of these species was not progressing at a fast enough rate. While the outlook was bright for the insects themselves, both crops and wild plants were noticeably suffering causing public distress. Approached by the Lunabee Trust, England's wealthiest conservation group, a proposal was put forward to develop fully robotic pollinators as a stop gap while the bees recovered. By helping fund development, Lunabee ensured that for every robobee sold privately to farmers, flower growers and hobby gardenings, 3 would be released into the wild and maintained by the Trust.

At 3 foot long and traveling at 30mph, Rigsbee, Renfield and Rubus would seem far too large and slow to replace a tiny bee. Released into a field tho, their purpose and size became apparent. As soon as the "stinger" opened, scores of tiny copies, identical to their mothership but 1/12th the size, would stream out and fly in wide formation at incredible speeds!

A closer look at one of these 3" bees revealed a pair of high thrust magnito-impuse jets that not only facilitated their rapid flight, but also generated a huge static charge. With field coils built into the body, a bubble of static electricity could be generated between the "stinger" and the "antennae" at incredible field strength and manipulated with surprising control. After a few seconds flight, mere inches from the flowers, a visible bubble of swirling pollen would form around the bot, simultaneously picking up new and depositing old as it hurtles past. When finished, the remaining pollen would be deposited and all the mini bots would return to their 3 foot queen, plugging into individual hexagonal recharging cells within.

To help raise public awareness and to ensure that urban spaces were also covered, special brightly coloured Lunabee versions were given out as part of a schools program, while industry purchased swarms in matching colours with advanced optics, guidance systems and queens.

Portlandia grandiflora

Portlandia grandiflora

Portlandia is a genus that epitomises the magnificence of tropical flora. Every millimetre of these plants is glorious. Margaret Barwick really described this well in her book Tropical & Subtropical Trees:

"Portlandia are exceedingly desirable, ranking in the top echelon of tropical flowering species, with their elegant trumpet-shaped, white...lily-like blooms. They are endemic to Jamaica and extremely rare in their natural environment.”

"Portlandia grandiflora ... grows in a regally restrained manner, to form a slender, multi-trunked, small tree with fissured, slightly corky bark. It has large handsome leathery, polished, short-petioled leaves that are initially flushed rose pink. In bud, they are deeply pleated and blushed pink. As the trumpet expands to open, its 5 triangular lobes flare backwards to reveal the slender throat and expose the pistil and stamens. As if this were not of sufficient allure, these blooms are powerfully vanilla-scented in the evening to attract the moths that pollinate them...”

I have always wondered why on earth Portlandia grandiflora is so exceedingly rare in O'ahu gardens. A friend of mine sent me fresh seed from his plant on Kaua'i and I sowed them straight away in May 2008 (they lose viability fast). They took 30 days to germinate and 6 months later I transferred them from the shallow community pot in which they were sown into individual plugs. A year on from sowing I distributed the seedlings to friends throughout Hawai'i and to a few plant buffs on the mainland. The most rewarding thing for me was donating two plug trays to Lyon Arboretum. Ray Baker planted some on the grounds and the rest are in the offerings at their sales. I believe they have already been featured in the past two events. I really hope that through my humble efforts this wonderful species will not be so rare, at least in Hawaiian gardens.

It's a slow-growing species that is slow to propagate asexually and has strong apical dominance. The leaves are so glossy that they always appear to have been freshly dipped in lacquer.

Red Tulip

Red Tulip

Name: From the Turkish for turban, after its rounded form. Botanical name Tulipa.
Colours: Everything except blue and true black.
Availability: November to May (January to April for British tulips)
Origin: Middle East
Care Tips: Tulips continue to grow in water and will curve towards the light. Make allowances for this when putting them in a vase or wrap the stems tightly in newspaper and stand them in water directly beneath a light for a few hours. Tulips have a vase life of just over a week, and buy flowers in bud but with colour showing.
Trivia:
Facts: Tulips are the third-biggest selling flower in Holland and are also very popular in the UK where many are also grown. The painter David Hockney displays them in his studio in Los Angeles and so they appear in many of his autobiographical paintings and for a long time were seen as his trademark.
Language of Flowers: In the Victorian language of flowers red tulips are a declaration of love, making them ideal gifts for Valentine's Day.
History: In the middle ages tulipmania saw bulbs change hands for the equivalent of ?4million pounds a bulb!

Japanese name," Saru-suberi" means "monkey slip (or slide)" because of very smooth surface of trunk. Flowers of the Daimonji Festival Bonfire

Flowers of the Daimonji Festival Bonfire

A dance celebrating summer in Kyoto, characterized by the Gozan no Okuribi (?????), more commonly known as Daimonji-yaki (?????),the culmination of the O-Bon festival on August 16th.

Starting at 8PM, five giant bonfire designs in the shapes of Chinese characters are lit on the mountains that surround the city. The most famous—and the first to be lit—is the character dai (?), meaning "large", on Kyoto's Daimonji-yama (????, daimonjiyama?). The other four fires are lit at ten-minute intervals, and by 8:30, all the characters can be seen. These fires are lit to guide the spirits of the anscestors back to the other world after their breif visitation during Obon, the Festival of the Dead.

The best place to view the festival is from the Nakagyo Ward, in the center of the city. Many hotels have Daimonji specials where, for a fee, you can see all five fires.

Performed by maiko, or apprentice geiko, of Miyagawa-cho.

a dramatical and highly exceptional Dutch-American life

a dramatical and highly exceptional Dutch-American life

# Picture of a woman undoubtedly not any longer in the flower of her youth .....
This old woman was 78 years of age when she was 'immortalized' - and she may very well have been CORNELIA VAN DER GROEF , living then in the USA , and still wearing the 'kuivel' , the traditional hat worn by (almost) all the women in days long gone bye now on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee in the Netherlands , the island where Cornelia van der Groef was born and raised .

## The life of CORNELIA VAN DER GROEF started off and continued both dramatically and exceptionally.....

Cornelia , born in the year 1855 in Sommelsdijk in the Netherlands , was the only child of the matrimonial alliance between her father JACOB VAN DER GROEF and her mother , Jacob's second wife ADRIAANTJE DROOGER .
Cornelia lost her mother at a very young age : Adriaantje already died ten days after she had - in hard labour ...?! - given birth to her daughter Cornelia .

So, Cornelia grew up without a mother but with a stepmother , Cornelia Tulp , and she became a young woman who had to start working as a labourer / maid-servant , since there really can't have been any other option for Cornelia , considering the very poor conditions of living in those days .
Cornelia worked in different places on the island : in Oude-Tonge , Nieuwe-Tonge , Sommelsdijk and in the tiny place of Herkingen , until she met her first husband , DANIEL BREUR , to whom she married in her hometown Nieuwe-Tonge in the year 1875 .

The hopefully very happy married couple just got one son : Mattheus - after three years of marriage husband and father Daniel Breur would already pass away , not being older than 27 years .....

And now Cornelia had to make a living once again as a maid-servant , but this time also for her still very young son , until Cornelia came across JOHANNES SLINGER , tailor by profession , the man who was to become her second husband .
Johannes had also been married before : in 1879 he had lost his first wife Maatje Klapmuts .

On the first of october 1880 the marriage between Johannes and Cornelia took place . It must have been a highly sober marriage , since a copy of a specific document was found by us , a copy of a so-called 'certificate of insolvency' , issued by the mayor of Nieuwe - Tonge , but not after a "thorough investigation had taken place into their mutual personal and financial situation ....." , carried out by two independant fellow-villagers , Abraham Gerritsen , tailor , and Cornelis Tieleman , smith by profession .
It was not until these two independant locals had established that both Cornelia van der Groef and Johannes Slinger were so very poor that they were allowed to marry without being charged !
And what kind of marriage it would turn out to be .....?? A real disaster-marriage , possibly right from the start .....

It may have been the huge poverty , it may have been the very sinificant disparity in age between the two (Johannes was 18 years older than Cornelia) or the fact that just a short time before they both had been married to an other partner , or it may have been some other circumstance we know nothing about , but whatever the real cause may have been , the marriage between Johannes and Cornelia must have been a plain-spoken dreadful marriage , possibly already from the very beginning .....

Within a year since the day of the marriage-ceremony , Cornelia in the company of her then five years old son Mattheus , and without (!) her new husband Johannes , left Nieuwe-Tonge and went to the United States of America , to the place Paterson in the state of New Jersey .....but not for a very long time ....
A few months later already , on february 8 , 1882 , Cornelia and her son Mattheus returned ! But this stay in Nieuwe-Tonge would become a very short one ...

A little bit more than two months later , on april 15 , 1882 , Cornelia and her son left their home in Nieuwe-Tonge again and five days later Cornelia and son Mattheus would leave Nieuwe-Tonge and Goeree-Overflakkee behind , for the second time already in a short period of time , but now for good , and also this time without (!) Johannes Slinger ....... a rather unique deed that certainly wouldn't stay without consequence .......

D E S E R T I O N

With the lapse of some years Cornelia's husband Johannes Slinger - though they were very much seperated from one another , they were still legally married - started up a divorce suit because of d e s e r t i o n ["kwaadwillige verlating"] , a so-called poor persons' suit (or 'pro deo-suit' ) , for husband Johannes anyhow ......

By the end of 1889 the divorce suit would result in the following judicial sentence :

" CONSIDERING THAT BY THE STATEMENTS OF THE WITNESSES , IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES , AND IN DEFAULT OF CONTRADICTION , IT HAS BEEN TURNED OUT SUFFICIENTLY ......THAT THE RESPONDENT HAD DESERTED THE PETITIONER AND THEIR HOUSE IN COMMON IN NIEUWE-TONGE ON APRIL 15TH 188

Poem To A Sunflower
~By Katherine R. Lane (April 19, 1995)~

I see you there in glory shining bright,
Following the sun and its path of light.
Standing tall above all others in the field,
You grow, conquer, and do not yield.

The little birds take great delight
In playing round you, from day to night.
With your petals of yellow and leaves of green
How very easily you are seen.

But there is more to you than first sight,
More than beauty and grander to delight.
Every beautiful aspect that appears,
Gives praise to the Father dear.

He made you a part of creation,
And you praise him in glorious celebration!
The beauty that within you is expressed,
Gives testimony to his greatness.

Sunflower, how I long to be like you!
Glorifying God in all I do.
Following the Son and His path of light,
To worship Him in His glory shining bright.

I can learn from you, my friend,
With every breath, praise to God, I might send.
With all of his creation telling the story,
Might I, with you, proclaim His glory.

Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas, Nevada

Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas, Nevada

Bellagio is an AAA Five-Diamond, Mobil Five-Star rated luxury hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in the Paradise area of unincorporated Clark County, Nevada, USA. It is owned by MGM Mirage and was built on the site of the demolished Dunes hotel and casino. Inspired by the Lake Como resort of Bellagio in Italy, Bellagio is famed for its elegance. One of its most notable features is an 8-acre (32,000 m2) artificial lake between the building and the Strip, which houses the Fountains of Bellagio, a large dancing water fountain synchronized to music.

Bellagio was conceived by Steve Wynn and built by his company, Mirage Resorts, Inc. following the purchase and demolition of the legendary Dunes hotel and casino in 1993. Bellagio was designed by Marnell Corrao Associates and Jon Jerde. Bellagio had an original construction cost of US$1.6 billion.

The Bellagio employs approximately 10,000 people. In the fall of 2006, the casino floor was remodeled and new uniforms were issued, changing the original color scheme to a more elegant type.

Inside Bellagio, Dale Chihuly's Fiori di Como, composed of over 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers, covers 2,000 sq ft (190 m2) of the lobby ceiling. Bellagio is home to Cirque du Soleil's aquatic production of "O", only the second permanent production show for the world-renowned troupe.

The Bellagio opened Oct. 15, 1998, just before 11 p.m. in a ceremony that cost a reported US$88 million. The VIPs invited to the grand opening were expected to donate to The Foundation Fighting Blindness US$1,000 a person or US$3,500 a couple, which entitled them to an overnight stay at Bellagio's suite rooms.

Opening night's entertainment began with Steve Wynn giving a 40-minute welcome speech followed by the opening of the Cirque du Soleil production "O." Performing in Bellagio lounges that night were New York cabaret and recording artist Michael Feinstein, George Bugatti and John Pizarrelli. When it opened, it was the most expensive hotel ever built at around US$1.6 billion. The Bellagio was also opened on the fifth anniversary of the Luxor Hotel.

In 2000 it became an MGM Mirage property when Mirage Resorts merged with MGM Grand Inc. to create MGM MIRAGE.

* The Bellagio and its fountains are featured in the 2007 film Lucky You and the 2008 film 21.
* The Bellagio was featured prominently in the film Ocean's Eleven. The curved staircase that Tess Ocean (played by Julia Roberts) descended was removed during a 2006 remodel to accommodate the entrance pathway from a newly built hotel tower, called The Spa Tower. New shops and restaurants fill the space. The fictitious vault for the three casinos that were robbed (MGM Grand, Mirage, and Bellagio) owned by Terry Benedict (played by Andy Garcia) was located beneath the Bellagio.
* In the 2007 film Ocean's Thirteen, Daniel Ocean (played by George Clooney) is talking about The Dunes Hotel (which was situated on the same place before the Bellagio was built) while he is standing in front of the Fountains of Bellagio together with Rusty Ryan (played by Brad Pitt).

Many professional poker players prefer to play at the Bellagio poker room, calling it their home base (or more commonly "The Office") due to the high table limits. Poker professionals refer to the high-limit table as The Big Game.[1]

Bellagio has also partnered with the World Poker Tour to host several of their tournaments.

Bellagio's slot floor features an expansive collection of more than 2,400 machines. With denominations ranging from 1? - $1,000, Bellagio offers a wide variety of slots designed to accommodate every level of player. The slot floor also features exclusive games, progressives and promotions only available at MGM MIRAGE™ properties.

The Fountains of Bellagio is a vast, choreographed water feature with performances set to light and music. (See musical fountain.) The performances take place in front of the Bellagio hotel and are visible from numerous vantage points on the Strip, both from the street and neighboring structures. The show takes place every 30 minutes in the afternoons and early evenings, and every 15 minutes from 8 p.m. to midnight. Before a water show starts, a gong sounds to warn people that the show is about to start. Exceptions: a single or string of shows may be withheld when winds prevail; a single show may be skipped to avoid interference with a planned event. The fountain display is choreographed to various pieces of music.

The fountains are set in a 9-acre (36,000 m2) manmade lake. Contrary to a common urban myth that the lake is filled with treated greywater from the hotel, it is actually serviced by a fresh water well that was drilled decades prior to irrigate a golf course that previously existed on the site. The fountains actually use less water than irrigating the golf course did.[3] They incorporate a network of pipes with more than 1,200 nozzles that make it possible to stage fountain displays c

The Love of Money and Sin 3

The Love of Money and Sin 3

I took this picture in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. A huge display just inside the reception area celebrated the Chinese New Year. I thought this was so odd because it was about the weekend of Valentine's Day, and I figured Vegas would capitalize on it, i.e. all of the wedding chapels galore. Instead, a huge approximately 40 foot Chinese idol with massive looking gold coins strewn beneath it was the focus. The only place we found in town celebrating Valentine's Day was Walmart.

Though my hubby and I enjoyed the short vacation we took in Vegas through many of the sights and sounds that were family friendly, this aspect of blatant idol worship disturbed me. Though the displays all over town celebrating this festival were very alluring as noted above in this picture I took, those things that it represented to me is perhaps the core of humankind's separation from God--the love of money and sin. When I read these passages listed below during one of my devotions, I was reminded of the pictures I shot in Vegas and decided to post them on my flickr site:

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. (Psalm 135:15-18, NIV)

The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk. Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. (Revelation 9:20-21, NIV)

The result of of the love of money and sin brought to mind these like passages:

He said to me, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." (Revelation 21:6-8, NIV)

Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. (Revelation 22:14-16, NIV)

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:14-15, NIV)

The Good News after reading these very convicting passages can be found in passages like these that sum up the whole purpose of the Lord, bringing to light our many failings:

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

But now a righteousness from God, apart from the law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:19-24, NIV)

For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. (Romans 11:32, NIV)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)

The cool thing about this grace and righteousness given freely to us as a gift is that it has a wonderful side effect: We no longer desire or love to sin because His power touches us and are inclined instead to desire to do good and love (Romans 6:1 to 8:14 and Deuteronomy 5:29). This effect does not come by reading and studying and memorizing Scripture, though it is most certainly advantageous: Through it, we discover what sin is in order to agree with Him that it is wrong and it encourages us to do good and to love and to show ourselves approved and to fellowship with Him and others along with exhorting and rebuking us in Him, etc. (1 Corinthians 1:17 to 2:16). This new desire/inclination, instead, comes

Vincent van Gogh voluntarily entered the clinic of Saint-Paul-de-Mausolee in southern France on May 8, 1889. The sanatorium sits just over the mountains from Arles, where Vincent had spent the previous winter producing some of his more energetic and moving canvases. It was also where he had suffered his most severe mental breakdowns, which eventually prompted his hospitalization. From his workroom at the clinic Van Gogh looked down on an enclosed field of wheat. During his eleven-month stay he drew or painted this view some twelve times. This picture of the wheat field during a rainstorm is the only work of its kind he did in the South, and while the idea of representing rainfall by diagonal slashes of paint clearly relates to Van Gogh's interest in Japanese prints, the final effect is completely personal and well beyond any borrowed source. There is truly nothing quite like it in his considerable output--truly nothing so gently and objectively observed, nothing so completely revealing his own state of mind. Joseph J. Rishel, from Philadelphia Museum of Art: Handbook of the Collections (1995), p. 203.

Andrea's Valentine's Day Present

Andrea got me a light tent for Valentine's Day. That was so lovely of her. I got her these flowers. Naturally I had to use her gift to take pictures of them.

Can you see the two different gifts in this picture? I thought it was a clever idea. BTW gift having an iPod laser engraved and gift wrapped was an amazing experience. Apple sure knows how to please! The box was excellent!

Bracelet - Vintage Flower

Bracelet - Vintage Flower

To create this unique vintage inspired bracelet, I first created a supple wristband using high quality bronze Japanese seed beads and the ancient North American technique of peyote stitch. I then edged the bracelet with pretty little scallops using more seed beads and gorgeous gold glass pearls. As a final touch I wove yet more seed beads and pearls into this sweet little flower and attached it firmly at the centre with bronze pressed flower beads either side. The integrated clasp consists of glass beads and seed beads and is adjustable between 6 3/4 and 7.5 inches.
