Saber's Edge: A Combat Medic in Ramadi, Iraq The National Guardsman, the citizen soldier called upon to fight for this nation in a time of war, is one of the least understood -- and perhaps one of the most compelling -- figures of the Iraq War. Saber's Edge is the story of a middle-aged Vermont firefighter called upon to be a soldier in the worst place on earth -- Ramadi, Iraq. In a few short weeks Thomas A. Middleton went from being a suburban dad to a combat medic traveling between platoons, filling in for other medics and engaging in some of the fiercest and most crucial fighting of the war. This is the war as experienced from the ground level: days of tedium interspersed with the adrenalin of combat; moments of lighthearted laughter broken by the sorrow of loss. This is also the story of the unique wartime perspective of our guardsmen. Unlike the raw, unformed young recruit, the mature guardsman often comes with the burdens of family, experience, and a developed sense of self. Accordingly, Sgt. Middleton's story chronicles the inner conflict created by his long-time professional role as a healer and his newfound life as a warrior in the urban battlefields of Iraq. Thrust into a culture and theater of war that he is little equipped or trained for, the author tries to make sense of his actions. Coarsened by combat and increasingly disdainful of the local population, he receives solace and insight from his life-long faith and ultimately emerges as a man who understands his role in the world. Saber's Edge is also the story of the Green Mountain Boys of Task Force Saber: a story of comradeship and communion amid fierce street fighting in a crucial theater of the Iraq War (the eventual site of the "Al Anbar Awakening"). Based on the author's first-hand experiences and interviews with other soldiers, Saber's Edge presents a riveting account of modern urban warfare and the inspiring story of one man reconciling his actions in warfare. wet seat I was wooed by the shpiel of the rep on the first day in Zante this summer. She told us that Laganas had the most beautiful sandy beach where every evening flocks of turtles would visit to lay their eggs. From the way she spoke of this glorious event I imagined them to be piling up with every wave that reached the shore, that when I reached the beach the sun would have been partially blocked out by their shells. My suspicions should have been raised when she continued her introduction to the island and told us how great it is to watch the sunset rising. First opportunity I got I set off on my mission to become ‘one’ with the turtles. I reached the beach after a harrowing walk down ‘the strip’ where I was now too old to be encouraged inside for ten free shots and a wet t-shirt. In Laganas the beach appears to be made of cement powder and is multi purpose, used as a coach park and also as a place for al-fresco fornication. Where were my turtles going to be in all this? It reaches it’s widest point at about a metre deep from the edge of the sea to your first watered down shot and every few metres a cluster of umbrella poles have been thrust deep into the sand. Apparently every hole dug, every disturbed bit of sand could be where a turtle has laid her eggs. Every hole I came to was filled with beer cans. I was convinced that I was just missing them, just a mile more along this trickle of cement and I shall round the headland to be dazzled by the sight of a glistening aquamarine coloured cove with mountains of eggs just hatching. Blonde Adonis-like conservationists would be talking gently to each hatchling, encouraging it to make the most of it’s life and not to get mixed up with drugs. Holding its flipper they would lead it to the water’s edge and and kiss it goodbye, then turn, muscles rippling and look for another baby to nurture whilst they had no shirt on and were twitching their pecs. Around each corner the sand became slightly more like rubble, there came a point where I didn’t think that even a turtle with a turtle’s head would have the determination to dig through 6ft of concrete. As I stumbled back over craggy boulders and oil barrels I replayed in my head the words of the rep, I wondered if I had misunderstood; were turtles some kind of slang term for the pairs of teenagers at waist height in the water gyrating and moaning? Were they some kind of man who hangs out in the bars in the evening ‘laying eggs’ – is that a term for dealing drugs? I decide that it has all been some elaborate prank to humiliate gullible tourists and that I shall return home to jeers of, “Oh you didn’t fall for that turtle nonsense did you?” I would forever resent turtles and feel ridiculed by them and each time one was mentioned in conversation (which happens often when you are around men) My face would seize up on one side and tick slightly. I couldn’t face the embarrassment if it wasn’t in fact a joke and I was the only person in the whole of Zante to have missed the tidal wave of shelled creatures. So I stumped up the cash to go on a turtle spotting boat trip. I didn’t see a single turtle but we seemed to hit a lot of floating rocks with our propellers. Baby Ben. 2/365. Maybe it was my collarbones. Hah. I'm wearing my strapless American Eagle shirt. This is probably the first times I have ever worn it! So, I had this idea in my head (you know, these pictures always look way cooler in my mind than when I actually take them. I need to learn how to use photoshop.) all day! But just to follow these rules of 365, I made sure I took this at midnight. It actually was around 12:10 or so when I finally got set up, but it's technically day 2. =] I think I'm doing pretty good. I have a bunch of ideas for the next few days...let's just hope they turn out okay and I can actually get them done. After these ideas run out....I think I'm screwed. hah. The race was organized by Sgt. Maj. James Bartkey who had planned to take part in the Stillwater Marathon in his hometown of Stillwater, Minn. until his unit, the 34th ID, was called up to deploy to Iraq. When Bartkey arrived in Iraq he contacted the organizers of the marathon and asked if they would be willing to sponsor a sister race for the Soldiers in Iraq. A Chinese Holiday I've just finally got the time to write a bit since I came back. A frenzy of panic since we are having a launch this July and the budget is not really much so we are a bit pressured to go through proposals from the distributors quite quickly. Anyway, the trip to China was not easy but the things I saw (and you will, in the photos) more than made up for it. We went with this tour group of Chinese students from Shenzhen University. Well, we biked a lot on the way to Yulong River from the town proper of Yangshuo .. it wasn't a leisure type but more of biking to get there.. the views were nice so I wouldn't have minded but it was around 12 noon.. the sun was scorching hot! You should see my back now, the tan line from my shirt is stark! Anyway, so there. Almost all the tourists bike, except for those who came with a really expensive tour (China is cheap but rip-offs are very likely esp since we don't speak the language!) So on the first day, we biked towards this river Yulong in Yangshuo and took the 2 hour bamboo boat along the Moon Hill (called so because there's a hallow spot atop the mountain which kind of shows the faces of the moon as you progress through the river-- in short depending on your angular sight towards it). I was a bit tired from all the biking so I slept.. we only paid 30 Yuan each (around HKD 28). We were pairs in each bamboo boat but much to Ceha's company, I was fast asleep! Save for the river breaks that send us holding on to our dear lives lest we emerge wet to the insides! I felt a bit guilty because the boatman was even singing to us. It's an Asian version of a gondola ride in Venice?? Hahaha! It was good, pretty much like the floating market in Bangkok since a lot of old ladies were selling oranges and drinks in boats of their own.. that was a bit annoying but towards the end it was quite peaceful and the scenery was all good. After that we biked back again (I think around an hour or so!!) and had lunch at this "very" Chinese place (it's so authentic, it looks like one of those break stops of Chinese movies where villains are flying with swords!) .. the famous delicacy of Yangshuo is the Beer Fish (fish cooked in liquor) so we had a taste of that. I don't want to go on tour groups again because it feels like you are being hauled in hordes.. it's not how I want to travel at all! So after that, it was time to visit the Water Caves (like the underground river in Palawan) but since I've done it in Palawan before & I felt claustrophobic, plus I am dead tired from all the biking, I just opted to join the group who wanted to get back to the hotel. Besides, I wanted to take a bath and do a little exploring around town (Ceha and Meicy went to the cave). So I got back to the hotel and showered then I slept a bit since a headache seemed to be creeping in. When I woke up, the girls were not back yet so I got dressed to get some Italian ice cream in West Street (this long street where most travelers stay.. so called since it is lined with western-type cafes, restos and souvenir stalls). Our hotel was just right around the corner so it was a short walk. It's right in the town center. It's very cute at night, quite wonderfully illuminated with light posts along the Chinese bridge. So, I walked around with my ice cream and came upon this pizza place where I wanted to eat. So off I went to the hotel and met up with the girls. We went back to the West Street for dinner. We went around a bit, Meicy shopped and we went back to retire for the night. The next day was the trip to Guilin for the river cruise along Lijiang. I read that it is supposed to be one of the most scenic place in China nd sure, it was! Although the photos won't quite capture the wonder that I saw, I hope they come close. We saw mountains after mountains of folklore. One was the Mountain of 9 Horse because you can see formations of 9 horses on the face of the mountain.. no traveller has yet counted all 9 but we came to 7! Darn close. :) Then we docked at this small island that has for the backdrop the photo they imprint on the backside of the 20 Renmimbi! It was beautiful! And I held up the money against it, super exact how it looked. Hehe. After the cruise it was free time, we just went around and had lunch at this quaint little Chinese place. Beijing and Shanghai may have put China on the map, but these little, provincial gems put China in the hearts and fond memories of travelers. :) A moment with a friend a day for running around! this morning I had a plan. Get some trousers and a shirt, try and look smart. It was a simple plan, there was not much that could go wrong. I asked for advice at the hotel reception and was told of a good cheap shop to purchase what I needed. I jumped on the metro and headed off to secure my items. I arrived at Barbes Rochechouart and found the shop but it was only womens and childrens clothes, I was a little bemused. I walked through the shop as though I was supposed to be there found the exit and discovered that this place was not one shop in one building but one shop taking up almost the entire street. I hopped from one building to the next and finally found the mens department. WOW, a reasonable shirt for €3.99, I got 3 and then went to the trousers section. Damn my tiny frame, they dont do trousers in my size. Well 1 out of 2 isn't bad. I headed back to the hotel so I could get changed and make my appointment at the wall st insitute. Tyipically for me I procrastinated and then had to rush to the metro. Travelling along I was certain I could get there on time, the metro was just opposite the building I needed to go to. Once the train arrived I left the station and walked briskly to the office. It didn't seem this far last time I visited, I looked at the street numbers and disscovered to my horror that I had chosen the wrong stop and had walked the wrong way! I had about 5 mins to get to where I needed to go and my only option was to run. I ran and ran but seemed to be getting no closer to the destination. 4 o'clock arrived and I was still 10 minutes from the office, i continued to run and finally arrived late sweating like a horse with a face as red as a tomato. I hate being late and especially for an interview so I just couldnt cool down. Luckily I had made a great first impression so my tardiness was not an issue. I now had a job and decided to celebrate with a meal. I tried a little bistro, it looked quite inviting, I sat down ordered my meal, it was quite enjoyable and as I was tucking in to the food I scanned around the room for nothing in particular, that was when I noticed the sign saying that they did not accept credit cards for values less than €20. I had absolutely no cash on me. There was really only one choice, I wasn't going to be able to explain to the waiter my situation, I just had to order enough to surpass the limit. After eating a starter, a main, a dessert a coffee and a beer I presented my card only to find that thier machine was not working. My extended meal was for nothing. Now I was full and I had to go for a walk to get money. Oh well, at least I got to walk off my dessert and beer. (10) Olivia gets caught having her photo taken This is the sunshiney and happy Olivia who I had the pleasure of meeting on this hot and sunny summer's day. Olivia was in the town centre with some colleagues promoting a well known charity and for me she stood out because of her happy and radiant disposition and also because she sported the most amazing dread locked hair, all tied up and kept in place by a beautiful red hair band. When I asked if I could take her photograph she beamed happily and joyously and agreed, but she added that she shouldn't really . . . "If my boss sees me he'll flip . . . Oh but what the hell he can sack me." I explained that was a good attitude and she could always get another job and we walked over to a mobile stall selling many colourful things where I had her stand in front so as to have a nice background. "I must warn you that I'm not very photogenic" she proclaimed. I told her that she looked great and that she was just perfect for a photograph, which is true. Olivia then to my surprise started to take off her T-shirt. "Your not stripping for this are you?" I asked "I don't want a topless shot!" She laughed and said "I don't want to be wearing this company T-shirt." and continued to take it off. I was getting worried as to what lay beneath considering the intense heat of this mid-day May sunshine but it turned out she was wearing a vest. I took quite a few shots of her but then after the second shot or so she became quite nervous and told me that her boss had seen her and given her such a mad glare. "My boss is gonna have a right go at me for this" she said, now getting quite nervous. I asked her if she would like me to have a word with him and try and smooth things over and she said she would be grateful. However, he was at that moment talking to a lady he had stopped in the street asking if she would become a benefactor for his charity. In the meantime Olivia had a look at my photographs of her on my camera's LCD screen and told me that she liked this particular one I have featured here above. I waited for quite sometime whilst her boss attempted to sell the virtues of being a good benefactor of his charity. Then after what seemed like an age I approached him and explained that I was simply taking Olivia's portrait as I often take portraits of characters in the street. He glared at me and roared "I don't mind what the hell she does in her break but I'm not paying her to have her bloody photograph taken" He seemed rather wild eyed and extremely angry so I bid him a nice happy sunshiney day which seemed to make him even more angry and so I went on my way in search of more happy sunshiney people on this glorious sunny day in May. the value of live comedy (I've got... two tickets to Paradise) The bowling alley up the street has decided to add a comedy show every two weeks to its ever-increasing number of customer draws. I went to the first one tonight, Dwight Slade with Jennifer [didn't catch the last name]. Laughed my ass off. Tickets were to be $5 ahead of time or $8 at the door, but due to lack of promotion they were free earlier today. It's a bowling alley's restaurant's bar, with a little stage and seating for 120. Personally I think their "free tickets because of lack of promotion" thing backfired because the place was at capacity. They underestimated their audience thus undercut their profitability -- and comedians gotta get paid. But on the other hand, drug dealers use the "your first dose is free" strategy to get people hooked, right? Even Budd Friedman used this with The Improv; buy the shirt, show up any Tuesday night wearing it, and admission was free (plus local entertainment tax, which in Seattle when it had an Improv was 31˘)... plus a two-drink minimum, of course, so $5.31 for an awesome night. Next one's in two weeks, and I paid $2.50 each per for those tickets (special offer for the folks who showed up tonight... back to full price tomorrow). And being Wednesday nights, I can record Last Comic Standing and watch when I get home. That's a shift, 45 minutes from the opener and an hour with the main act, then go home and see 2-3 minutes per person. That's why going live is so great, you actually get the act... you get to bond. get paid to wear t shirts Paid is a film noir in the tradition of the French gangster movie. It is a story about underworld characters that have come to regret the choices they have made and now secretly long for a different and more meaningful life. It is also a love story between Paula (beautiful French actress Anne Charrier), a 28-year-old Parisian call girl working in Amsterdam, and young hit man Michel (Brazilian star and heartthrob Murilo Benicio, 2-time winner of the Cinema Brasil Grand Prize for Best Actor) whose hearts are touched when a six-year-old Bolivian boy abruptly enters their lives. The boy changes their fate. But, at the moment Paula and Michel decide to escape the underworld, Paula realizes that her hands are tied to a paid deal she has made with a powerful English narcotics baron (a tour de force performance by Tom Conti). The enticing offer Paula could not refuse turns into the demon that stands in the way of her future with Michel. Meanwhile, Michel s hands are tied to his mentor, assassin Giuseppe. Eventually, Michel and Paula find their way to freedom but not without paying a high price. 2010-03-27: clap until your hands hurt normally i do not take pictures of myself in mirrors or anything like that, but i was trying to figure out if i looked okay in this dress, and thought maybe if i could just get a picture instead of looking at myself in the mirror, i would understand better what i looked like. anyway, this dress, which is actually cute, is too big in some places and too small in others, making me upset that i paid for custom sizing. if i have to take it to a tailor anyway, i could have saved the $15 custom sizing money. now i know for next time!!! the panel at the conference went fairly well, i thought; we had a quiet audience who were reluctant to interrupt us to ask questions, so kat and i happily chatted away with each other for an hour, went to where diana was sitting in another room to say goodbye, and then hightailed it to her apartment to snuggle the baby and play with the rat and eat scones with her family. awesome. tonight we had delicious indian food for supper and then went to a joann's, where i bought a crapload of fabric. i got a bunch of discounts for buying the ends of bolts, and then another discount at the end -- 20% off my total order. so ~$140 of fabric and sundries ended up only costing $93. amazing!!! i got two patterned fabrics (one red and pink paisley; one black and rainbow shapes), one unbleached muslin, and one bleached muslin. it's all nice. i am excited about making skirts. and i think i am going to try to make a shirt out of the bleached muslin. a shirt!!!! there was something else but i don't remember what. also, the baby is pretty damn cute. we are not allowed to curse around her, because she is getting words, so instead of all curses, one uses the word "goat" and i am having fun coming up with inventive goat curses. like this one: "go sit on a goat and ride it!" Soccer Cake This cake was for the son's soccer banquet, it's what I like to call, "The Amazing Cake".... NOT because I think the cake is so amazing, but because I found out last night at aproximately 6pm, that this cake was due at 7pm tonight, NOT 7pm on Sunday, like I was informed of when I was asked to make it! the simple fact that I was able to complete the cake is AMAZING TO ME!!! Both cakes are white cake, ( WASC cake recipe!!) , except I used all vanilla extract, NO almond extract, the bottom cake is filled with an oreo cookie butter cream, the top cake has raspberry buttercream. The soccer "topper" is rice crispy treats, covered first in white chocolate ganache, then in fondant, then again in fondant sections! If I had the time, I would have filled the cake, let it rest over night, then frost a day later, TO AVOID THE BULGE, but I didn't have that luxury today, so please ignore my bulge... ( I should have THAT screen printed on a tshirt *~*)) I have several people that helped me tremendously on this cake... the first person is my sister, Teresa, she was here when I started the cake this morning, and did everything with me, step by step!! I really couldn't have completed it without her help! The other people who gave me lots of good advise on how to make the soccer ball: Toni..( xx's), Alana & Jamie! Laura, (absolutely LOVE the recipe) Kate, for suggesting to make the soccer ball in rice crisy treats, and Jo, just for offering to help out!! The ENTIRE idea for this cake came from the amazing "MANDOTTS", Amanda Leamons!!! Oguchi Onyewu, Alex Yi, Kyle Beckerman, FC Potomac teamates celebrate 1998 MD U-16 State Cup Three of the original U-17 residency class, three future professional soccer players, on the same youth soccer team. Onyewu is near the camera, behind the guy in the FILA t shirt and staring off toward my right. Beckerman is at the other end of the bleachers, with no shirt on and lots of hair, staring at the camera. Yi is behind Beckerman with a towel over his head. He shows up better in a few other photos in this series. I actually wasn't thinking much about them. I knew FC Potomac was a real good team but I wasn't thinking about future MLSers and national team players. My main interest was that Watson Prather, a neighbor kid, played for the team -- he's the kid w/o the shirt right above Onyewu. And the red-head next to Watson had played some games for my indoor team the previous winter. I was photographing Cup championship matches for the Maryland state newspaper and a local Potomac newspaper, but it was those two kids who accounted for me waiting around after the game for the ceremony. Even though I'd never heard of him, Beckerman sure attracted my attention during the game. He's the star of most of the action photos I took during the game. Old Farts Are Forever Legendary New Yorker cartoonist Lee Lorenz showcases his well-seasoned, fan-favorite characters in this one-of-a-kind collection titled Old Farts Are Forever. Lee's colorful old farts have been featured in boardrooms and bedrooms from snowy New England to balmy Boca Raton. They are the disappearing breed of ruthless senior industrialists and a growing legion of hapless victims of modern technology. His old farts face daunting doctors, pets that tyrannize their homes, and spouses who'd rather push them out of a moving car than share the last piece of coffee cake. C'est la vie, for an old fart. Welcome to Lee Lorenz's world. Old Farts Are Forever is the fabled cartoonist's first collection. The millions of age-challenged Americans and the masses of New Yorker cartoon fiends who love Lee won't be disappointed. "I looked in the mirror one day and discovered that after so many years of drawing old farts, I had become one. Old Farts Are Forever is both a celebration of America's favorite minority and an apology to a public I now realize was right all along." --Lee Lorenz (11) Milestone My 16 year old son, Jason, has been taking flying lessons. Saturday I got a call from his mom saying that the day we've dreaded had arrived: he was going to solo. I was out running errands so I bee-lined it to the airport. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me. Oddly enough I actually had my camera in my hand as I was heading out the door that morning but thought "why am I taking this, I'm only running errands. What is there to shoot?" Fortunately, I recently bought a cell phone with a camera. I've never had a camera phone. I'm one of these old farts that say "why do I need a camera on my phone, I just want a phone." I was glad I had it now. I had been debating whether or not to actually go to the airport when he solo'd. I didn't know if my nerves could take it. But, there was no way I would miss this milestone. On the way to the airport I could see a Cessna 152 flying the pattern around the airport. I was sure that was him but didn't know if the instructor was still with him. I got to the airport and met his mom and her husband. They told me the instructor was still with him. A few touch-and-go's later and the instructor got out and Jason took off on his own. That was when I stopped breathing. We went out close to the runway to watch. After what seemed an eternity he came drifting down toward the runway. He got about twenty feet from the asphalt when all of a sudden a gust of wind ballooned him up a bit and he aborted the landing, throttled up the engine and did a "go around". That was when my heart stopped. You see, even though Jason is16 he's never driven a car by himself. He got a late start on getting his learners' permit and won't get his license until September. At this point I'm thinking: "He can't even drive my stick-shift truck, why did I let him do this??" So, as I held my breath longer he made it around again and came in for a perfect landing this time. WHEW! It's over! Just as I started to breathe once again all of a sudden Jason throttles up the engine and TAKES OFF AGAIN!! His mom and I both were yelling "No No what is he doing??". We were so close to having this nightmare over. His mom and I have been divorced for five years and the only thing we've agreed on in that time is we both wanted this to be over. The instructor just laughed. He had told Jason to do several touch-and-go's but he didn't tell us that. Traitor. Well, Jason did finally land once and for all. I was overjoyed, both at his accomplishment and the fact it was over. Except that it's not over. He has to do more solo flights to earn his pilot's license. I'm not going to be there. Jason got out of the plane and looked bewildered as his mom and I went to hug him. He didn't know we were there. He didn't know what all the fuss was about. "Dad, it's just flying." Right. It's customary that when a person solos for the first time their shirt is cut off and displayed in the flight center. Jason's shirt is there along with dozens of others, many from teenagers. Shirts representing dozens of parents who, for a brief moment in time, lived in abject terror. © 2008 Tony Scislaw Stencil Shirt Tutorial pt. 5 Painting time! I use some opaque fabric paint by a french brand called Pebeo (www.pebeo.com). They got a nice variety of colours and I guess you can also mix them to get new colours. For the painting I used a sponge roller. Since it's made of sponge, the paint gets 'sucked' into the cells so you'll need to push down the roller to get most of it out. Therefor it's important you have a good quality roller and not a cheap one like me. If I push it down to hard, the roller jumps out and it could roll over my shirt! And you don't want that!! So... get a good roller and maybe even do a simple test roll in the shop! Because my image was rather big, the cutout came very close to the edges of the PVC sheet. So I placed some old magazine sheets near the sides to avoid paiting on my shirt over the edges (see photo). After some tests I found out it works best if you use a cover with a pretty girl on it! Ok, not get paiting over that stencil!! :) (We'll start with our first base colour and add other colours later) When you're done painting, slooooooowly (!) pull off the stencil. Be carefull not to make stains on the shirt with the wet stencil or your clumsy fingers. You can now let the paint dry. I dunno how long it takes exactly, just give it a few hours. New Suit Hugo Boss, size 46R. Please note that as recently as last September I wore a 50R and not long before that a 52R. Purchased for a wedding eight weeks out, purchased now because Nordstrom's was having a huge sale. I won't discuss how much this cost, except to say it was just three figures, and it was on a rack next to some Armanis that were $1,300 on sale. Consequently I expect to be buried in this suit. Grocery Bags The bags are shaped the same as plastic grocery bags, a t-shirt shape that fits nicely on the metal racks at the grocery store and hold the bag open for loaded. I've found that baggers appreciate the bags fitting on their existing racks and can be filled the same as a plastic bag.
