Arlo Pro 3 : 2K video, motion tracking, and more highlight the latest Arlo security camera | Arlo Support 2021

Despite the fact that Arlo's flagship Ultra camera was temporarily yanked from Best Buy due to various performance issues, the Netgear spin-off eventually became another triumph. This accomplishment is represented in the Arlo Pro's third iteration, which includes an on-board LED spotlight, colour night vision, smart alerts, motion tracking, configurable viewing angles, and continuous charging, among other Ultra features.

The Arlo Pro 3 doesn't have the Ultra's next-gen 4K resolution, but it does get bumped up to 2K, which is an 80 percent improvement over the 1080p Arlo 2. Other features from previous versions of the camera have been retained, such as customisable motion zones and a multi-mode arming mechanism.

A new SmartHub base station is included with the Arlo Pro 3. It looks similar to the one that came with the Ultra at first glance, but it replaces the original SmartHub's microSD slot with a USB connector and supports up to 2TB of local storage, so you don't have to rely on the cloud.

However, if you want to take advantage of all of this security camera's AI functions, such as human, animal, vehicle, and package identification, you'll have to pay $10 per month for a cloud subscription.Arlo is offering a three-month free trial of its Arlo Smart Premier service, which includes customizable activity zones, smartphone lock-screen notifications, e911 emergency call service, and 30 days of cloud video storage for up to 10 cameras. However, this is far less generous than the Arlo Ultra customers' one-year gratis offer.

Setup and performance

The setup method for the Arlo Pro 3 is similar to that of earlier Arlos. You attach the SmartHub to an ethernet port on your router after first adding it to the Arlo app and plugging in its power wire. Then, following the in-app directions, you add each camera. The app allows you to see the Wi-Fi signal strength as you place the camera as part of the installation. Before you commit to placing the camera on your home's siding or eaves, be sure you establish a strong connection. The Arlo Pro 3 uses the same single-screw magnetic mount that was introduced with the Ultra. A security attachment is also supplied, which locks onto the camera to prevent theft.

The Pro 3's 2K HDR resolution is a revelation if you've only used prior Arlo Pros—or any high-definition security camera, for that matter. When zooming up to nearly half of the camera's 12X maximum, details are clearer, colours are richer, and clarity is preserved.

The Ultra's colour night vision was fantastic, and it's even better here. If a crime is being committed, the camera's motion-activated spotlight provides adequate light and captures accurate colours, both of which convert into more comprehensive forensic evidence.

The Arlo Pro 3 has a 160-degree field of vision by default. You can lower this to a 125-degree Standard view or a 110-degree Full view in the camera settings. I found that the smaller angles were better for monitoring package delivery on my front porch, and the larger views were excellent for seeing activities surrounding my driveway.

Motion tracking performed well, but it might be problematic at times, as AI features are prone to be. It would always lock on to a moving target and follow its every move. When I had the TV on, however, it would become distracted and abandon the person it was following, allowing them to wander out of frame while it focused on the movement on the screen.

That didn't bother me because I don't leave the TV on when I'm not at home, but you might want to keep non-human motion to a minimum when this function is active.

Arlo transferred the system's siren from the base station to the camera itself with the Ultra, and it's still there on the Arlo Pro 3. When motion is detected, you can turn it off, but at 100 decibels, it'll scare the living daylights out of anyone within earshot.

The four working modes of the Arlo have been there since the initial camera, and they remain unchanged here. When motion is detected in Armed mode, the Arlo Pro 3 will record video and send you a push notice. You can change the rules by adding audio detection, increasing the duration of the video clips, or activating the base station's on-board siren when movement is detected.Schedule mode arms the camera at predetermined times, while Geofencing mode only arms it when you're away from home. Disarm disables motion detection but does not disable the camera.

With the Ultra, the Arlo software received a makeover, and the new UI has been carried over here. From the device's screen, you can access each camera's live stream, controls, and settings menu. Because you don't have to open a new page for each Arlo, switching between different camera angles is significantly easier. Simply tap the enlarging arrows in the top right corner of the thumbnail video to enlarge any camera's live broadcast to full screen. You can use Alexa or Google Assistant to transmit the camera's feed to smart displays based on those platforms, in addition to watching it on your phone. When paired with Arlo's VMB4540 SmartHub, the Arlo Pro 3 is also compatible with Apple HomeKit (but not HomeKit Secure video).
