OPINIONS NEEDED!!!!!! Fresh Comfort 2 Blocks Laid Out Should I have sashing or not in this quilt? These are all of the blocks that I have received so far from the participants of Fresh Comfort 2 (thank you for the wonderful blocks!!!!!!). If I choose to have sashing it will be Essex Linen/Cotton Blend in Natural OR Charcoal/Coal Kona Cotton. Thanks for your opinions! This picture is missing 10 blocks (made by me) if there is no sashing it is missing 22 blocks. This will be a twin sized quilt to go on my bed. Bring on the Dancing Girls Penthouse Nightclub Started by the Filipponi brothers in the 1940's, a good history of the bar is given in this Vancouver Sun Obituary for Ross Filipponi in October, 2007: "Vancouver nightclub legend Ross Filippone has died. He was 84. Filippone was one of the last connections to the golden era of Vancouver nightclubs in the 1950s. Together with his older brother Joe, he owned and operated The Penthouse Cabaret, a fixture at 1019 Seymour since 1945. The Penthouse started out as an after-hours speakeasy, became a legal cabaret in 1950, and has been one of Vancouver's top strip clubs for the past three decades. In its heyday, it was the city’s premier after-hours hangout, the place where stars like Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper and Louis Armstrong would hang out ’til the wee small hours. At the end of a 1957 show, Frank Sinatra announced from the Orpheum stage that he would “see you all at The Penthouse,” and the line to get in snaked around the block. And Ross Filippone was the guy who oversaw it all, greeting everyone in his trademark tuxedo. The Penthouse was his life: for many years, he even lived next door to the club in the old Filippone family home. He was born in Extension, a small mining town near Nanaimo. His father was a coal miner, but in 1929, the family moved to Vancouver. In 1933, their father bought a house on Seymour Street, only two doors down from the site of the Penthouse. Ross would live there until he married in 1961, when he bought a stylish modern house in Oakridge. The Filippones were a classic rags-to-riches story. Joe Philliponi (his name was spelled wrong by an immigration officer when Joe arrived in Canada from Italy) started off as a bicycle courier in the Depression and branched out into the taxi and trucking business. At the end of the Second World War, Joe and Ross decided to start their own nightclub. Liquor licences were hard to come by, so the Penthouse operated as a “bottle club,” where people would bring in their own booze in brown bags and the Filippones would sell them mix. The advantage of this was the club could stay open ’til five or six in the morning; the disadvantage was the police did raids. “The police would come in 20 or 30 strong two or three times a week,” Filippone recalled in a 2001 interview. “We used to have spotters on the roof. You couldn't miss five or six police cars coming down the street. We'd press a buzzer and tell the waiters, who'd tell the customers [to put their bottles on the floor]. It was a joke, a joke, a joke.” In the early days, the Penthouse also operated as a restaurant, and Filippone boasted of importing the first pizza oven into Canada about 1957. In 1965, Filippone brought in go-go girls, an attraction that evolved into the exotic dancers of today. In 1968, the Penthouse finally got a liquor licence, which forced it to close at 2 a.m. Prostitutes also started frequenting the club. In 1975, Ross and Joe were charged with living off the avails of prostitution. The brothers were initially convicted and faced fines of $50,000 each and 60 days in jail. They were cleared of all charges on appeal, but not before they had spent three years in the courts, plus $1 million in lawyer's fees and lost income (the club was closed throughout the trial). On a personal note, Filippone made a big lifestyle change at the age of 50, when he quit drinking and smoking and put his energy into athletics. “He was a Damon Runyan character,” said his longtime friend Tevie Smith. “He was a rounder about town, a drinker and a partier and a great fun guy, and then all of a sudden he became a marathoner. He totally changed his life around.” Joe was killed in a robbery at the Penthouse in 1983. Ross ran the club by himself for several years before handing over the day-to-day management to his son Danny. In recent years, Filippone played racquetball four days a week at the Jewish Community Centre, and travelled around North America and Europe to tournaments. Danny Filippone said his father had some health problems in recent years, but was still fit and active. Ross Filippone had just returned from a trip to New York to see his beloved Yankees play baseball, and played his usual game of racquetball Friday. But he fell ill on the weekend and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital Sunday. “He was absolutely full on,” said Danny Filippone. “And I know in my heart that’s exactly the way he wanted to go out.” A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver. Ross Filippone is survived by his 85-year-old brother Jimmy, his three children, Danny, Joey and Maria, and his longtime companion Crystal. He was predeceased by his brothers Joe and Mickey and sister Florence. jmackie@png.canwest.com" Charles Fordtran (May 7, 1881-Nov 1, 1888) In Jan 1831 Charles Fordtran , a German of Huguenot descent, joined the colony of Stephen F. Austin. His first work was to supply land for Austin's partner Samuel May Williams, he was given a league (4,428.4) as his fee. Soon he brought two families of settlers who worked for him for a time, then obtained their own land in present Fayette County. On July 4, 1834, he married Almeida Brookfield (1817-1887) daughter of noted Indian-fighting family. Fordtran also fought Indians, who stole livestock and kidnapped the wives and children of colonists. In the Texas War for Independence, he joined the "spy rangers" under Capt John Bird, defending civilians who were fleeting to escape the Mexican invaders. Charles Fordtran was one of the first tectonic settlers in Texas- arriving same years before the main tide of German immigration. Music and good living abounded in his home, he and his wife had 14 children, with nine living to adulthood of four sons in the confederate army during the Civil War (1861-1865) two survived, his descendants have made contributions to Texas history as industrialists, engineers, lawyers, physicians, and teachers. I graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1975 and from Jacksonville State University with a B.S. in Education in 1995. (Some things just take a while:) 2. My husband and I moved 14 times in 18 years. No, we weren't running from the law or the landlords, he! he! My husband served in the US Army for 22 years. We lived mostly in the SE United States and 3 times in Germany. Lots of fun adventures. 3. I thought that I wanted to be a teacher. After graduating in 1995, I accepted a position to teach 5th grade. Only 4 days later, all the while not eating and sleeping much, I ran away from teaching. I couldn't take it. I ADMIRE ALL OF YOU WHO CAN DO THIS. IT'S THE TOUGHEST JOB OUT THERE!!!!! (Hey, Janice Wagnon, I'm your greatest admirer --- just don't know how you do it!) 4. Like Kristen, I call my mama everyday. Sometimes several times. I travel a lot with the work that I do, so I like to let her know when I'm off the road. 5. I'm 53 years old. I was born in 1956. The first movie that I remember seeing at the theatre was at the drive-in with my family. It was an Elvis movie. My mama loved Elvis, Dr. Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare. So, of course, we girls did, too. 6. I fell in love with my husband almost as soon as I saw him! He was an Army recruiter looking for young men to recruit from my high school. Lean, sharp, man-in-uniform . . . uh . . . you get the picture:) 7. We only had one child. He's my Sammo aka Buck aka Bonzai Buck. He loved, and I guess still does, Thundercats, He-Man and all other super heroes. I'll never forget the day that I unthinkingly told him that Lion-O was not real. Lion-O was injured and Sam was distressed. I thought I was helping to ease the pain. His little eyes were so sad when he said, "You mean he is not alive? The Thundercats are not real people?" Oh, man --- that was rough. I'm sorry Sam. Sam grew up to be a fine man. He married his sweetheart (our dear Jenny) and together they are lovingly and beautifully raising Susannah. 8. My husband, our poodle and I enjoy our quiet evenings. We all feel our age now. We move a little slower, especially after sittin' a spell. But, we do love outdoor activities. (Not Fifi the poodle, but Mark and I). We like to play a little tennis, take easy to moderate hikes, and putter around in the yard. 9. I like to have a good balance of work, play and sleep. I'm self-employed, so I have a little flexibility in my days. A perfectly proportioned day is about 7 hours of work, about 8 hours of play, and about 9 hours of sleep. Now that doesn't happen very often, but it is greatly appreciated!!! 10. Photography is the place where I can be totally me. I don't have to meet client expectations or deadlines. I don't have to entertain anyone. I don't have to worry if someone likes it. I can be me. Not knowing it all. Contemplation of Justice in Front of the Supreme Court Contemplation Of Justice James Earle Fraser Supreme Court East Capitol Street & 1st Street One of two 45-ton allegorical statues flanking the steps to the Supreme Court building, this features a woman seated with a pensive expression. In her right hand is a tiny figure representing Justice. Seated female figure installed on the right side of the entrance to the building. Figure is hooded and fully draped. Her proper left arm rests on a book and her proper right hand holds a miniature blindfolded female figure representing Justice. The pediment is named Equal Justice Under Law. It was created by Robert Aitken. The pediment is adorned with nine figures, six of which are portraits of historical figures dressed in classical attire. In the center of the pediment is a female figure representing Liberty. She is seated holding the scales of justice in her lap. On either side of Liberty are two Roman soldiers. Order on her proper right holds a sheathed sword, and Authority on her proper left holds a fasces, the Roman symbol of authority. On Liberty's proper right is a portrait of the architect of the building, Cass Gilbert, and the statesman and lawyer, Elihu Root. Gilbert and Root are symbolic of council. To Liberty's her proper left is a portrait of Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes and sculptor Robert Aitkin. Hughes and Aitkin are also symbolic of council. At the far proper right end is a portrait of president William Howard Taft and at the far proper left end is a portrait of Chief Justice John Marshall. Taft and Marshall are symbolic of Research. Ms. Priyanee Wijesekera The First Lady Secretary General of the Parliment of Sri Lanka The Secretary General of Parliament, Priyanee Wijesekera will end her long and distinguished career as a top public servant on 31 March 2008. Wijesekera, the first woman Secretary General of Parliament counting 18 years of service to the legislature itself conceded in an interview with The Sunday Leader that hers was a challenging job albeit an exciting one. A constitutional lawyer who won the coveted Zonta International Award as a woman of achievement for her distinguished career in law and public service, Wijesekera advocates the strengthening of the institution of parliament and improving the public service to build a better Sri Lanka. Painless dentistry, Almaty, Kazakhstan, 25 September 2008 The sign is in Russian and printed in the Cyrillic alphabet, with two exceptions: TOO "DENTUR" is the office name, in Latin characters, and TOO, in the Kazakh language (which is written in the Cyrillic alphabet though it's a Turkic, not Slavic, language) is the acronym that's approximately equal to "Inc." or "Ltd." in English. Beneath TOO are 2 words in Kazakh (pronounced "mis emdeyu") which can be translated to "dental practice". On the right of those, in Russian, is printed the word "stomatology"--dentistry. It was the last great demonstration of the ability of railroads to move large and unexpected crowds of people on a short notice. Nearly any railroad passenger car that could safely move was brought out of storage, crews were called back from layover, and long trains were packed. My friend Alden Forbes and I had previously made plans to take a train trip, and we wound up in the middle of the excitement.
