The winning schools of An Taisce Green Schools Energy Project sponsored by ESB Electric Ireland were announced at an event in Tailors Hall, Dublin today attended by Minister of State for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Fergus O’Dowd. The overall winner was St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School in Cabra, who partnered with their catering company, Glanmore Foods to consider how the business could improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
The young students, aged between 7 and 12, from St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School conducted a site visit and energy efficiency audit at Glanmore Foods and proposed a range energy-efficient suggestions including: turning appliances off standby, changing to CFL light bulbs where possible, turning machines off when not in use in the factory and encouraging staff to walk and cycle to work.

Furthermore, the girls calculated that the school used 15,170 plastic water bottles each year, which they felt was wasteful, so together with Glanmore Foods they considered some energy efficient alternatives and are now fitting water filters in each classroom. This has resulted in a reduction of bottle usage to 189 per year, leading to a massive energy saving as the bottles no longer need to be produced or recycled. In recognition of their creative solutions, the school was awarded the top prize of €4,000 by Susan Kinane, Business Markets Manager, ESB Electric Ireland.

An Taisce Green-Schools Energy Project sponsored by ESB Electric Ireland is a schools initiative that educates young people about the benefits of energy efficiency. The project is targeted at national schools that are already in the An Taisce’s “Green Flag” programme and brings local businesses and schools together to demonstrate the practical application of energy efficiency.
This year saw schools from all over the country partnering with local business, such as Colgate Palmolive and the Nenagh Guardian, to develop projects illustrating the practical application of energy efficiency.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony Susan Kinane of ESB Electric Ireland said: “ESB Electric Ireland is committed to working with businesses and households to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. The ease with which the companies were able to adapt to the children’s energy conservation suggestions demonstrates how simple improving a business’s energy usage can be. Each year we see that young people have the creativity and determination to seek solutions that will enhance how we consume electricity. I would like to congratulate all of the students that submitted projects this year; the standard was very high and choosing an overall winner was a difficult task.

Minister of State, Fergus O’Dowd said: “Energy awareness is critically important in today’s world, and giving young people an understanding of energy efficiency and conservation is an important aspect of their education. I would like to congratulate the work done by An Taisce through the Green Flag programme in making learning about energy and environmental protection both interesting and relevant. I would also like to commend ESB Electric Ireland as without the support of big-business, projects like this do not happen. I would like to congratulate all of the schools who submitted projects and indeed the businesses that worked with them – in these times energy efficiency also means reduced cost for business and so it is something that is relevant to everyone.”

The ESB Electric Ireland Green-Schools Energy Project gives the students an opportunity to affect change in their wider community. Our research shows that the 2040 schools working on the Energy theme have reduced their energy costs by on average 22% - resulting in cost savings of €2,400 per school per year. This suggests savings of over €5million in energy costs made by schools with Green Flags in Ireland. The hard work, support and dedication of our schools and our sponsors make the huge success of the programme possible”

Sheila Ryan, a teacher at St. Catherine’s Senior Girls’ School said of the project: “Saint Catherine’s Senior School is a DEIS Band 1 School and it was great to see the children taking part in such a valuable learning experience. The response by Glanmore Foods was so positive and really boosted the children’s self esteem. We are planning on re-visiting the factory to see the changes in real life over the next couple of weeks.”

Toyota Celica: Ver 3.0

My 2003 Toyota Celica GT-S. Shot with a Nikon D50, equipped with an 18-200mm VR lens and circular polarizing filter.

The effect on this image was accomplished usign Photoshop CS3 by running the tone mapping process multiple times, each at mild settings. I use the tone mapping plugin from hdrsoft.com. Here is my technique:

1. Start with an image (RAW if possible) that has a fairly dynamic range of colors already and make sure the brightness, contrast, shadows, saturation, and exposure are acceptable. The better the photo looks BEFORE tone mapping, the better it wil look after!

2. Convert to 32-bits and run the Photomatix Tone Mapping plug-in. Use relatively mild settings just to get a soft effect. You will do multiple passes, so don't try to get an extreme effect on the first pass.

Play around with the settings until you get a nice subtle effect.

3. Copy the image and paste it into a new 8-bit document. (You have to select 8-bit on the new document screen). if you just convert the 32-bit image to 8-bits, you'll get weird dots and lines in your image. There may be a better way to do this, but this method works perfectly every time.

4. Convert this new document back to 32-bits and run the Tone Mapping again. This time, the picture should have a more "artistic" appeal to it.

You have to play around with the settings during each conversion to get the right results. I usually set strength and Microcontrast (micro tab) to max. The most important other setting to play with is "Light Smoothing". For the first conversion, I usually use Medium to Very High light smoothing.

Sometimes, I repeat the process 3 or 4 times until I get the desired result.

P.S. - I did all this on accident and spent 3 hours trying to figure out what I did!

Prossesed in Photoshop: Filter: Glowing Edges

The Story:

I decided to bring my camera to work on Wednesday and took it in a rush, not noticing that the lens I had attached was the Sigma 10-20mm wide angle. My original thought was to take some portrait-like shots of the musicians who play at IFC mall during lunch time. I did my best to take some shots with the 10-20, but between the poor lighting and the distortion I wasn't very happy with the results. In the end, I ended up with a shot of a violin player but the background was extremely cluttered and noisy and the picture looked.., for a lack of a better word...., boring.

I played around with selective color, making the whole thing B&W and keeping the violin at the original color. However, this also didn't work for me. The main thing I liked about the photo was the musician's left hand and the position of the fingers during a very climatic part of the performance. Thus, I started playing around with the filters. When I stumbled across the Glowing Edges filter I really loved the fact that it took out most of the background and provided the outline of the violin and the player. Additionally, most fo the color was contained in the violin which to me really exressed the feel of the musical sound waves and made me remeber the sounds of the performance. This inspired the name for the photo as this effect made me feel the energy of the musioc without the sound. The only additional processing involved some cropping and cloning of the black background to remove some additional clutter / noise.

This is a handheld HDR of the main building at Hofmansgave (same place as yesterdays "sun rays" shot). It is a cropped vertical shot, so the size is somewhat different than usual, since I normally post two images side by side when I do vertical shots. I had the ISO set to 400, since this was handheld. I really don't have anything to add about the history of this place, so if you want more background info, read yesterdays image information.

Last Will and Testament

I have never had much, probably never will. I live in a crappy little apartment with neighbors I can’t stand. I have a worn out little blue car that smells like dirt on the inside. I do however have 40 ounces of silver but odds are you won’t find it since I have it and a bunch of my poor man patents buried. And who knows if my electric motor design will ever generate any interest before or after I am dead. 348 1st stop

However since I know no one of any importance the odds of anyone that I know ever reading this is virtually nil. But should money come my way and I have yet to write a will and testament then I would like to think that this will suffice. If I do receive a large amount of money in my name I would like to start a Full Ride Scholarship to a 4 year college of the winner’s choice. The requirements would be 3 females every 2 years. GPA’s must be 3.5 or higher. SAT’s must be no less than 1200. Must be or have been a former librarian, either in high school or a Middle College. Age requirement starts at 17 and ends at 24. Girls whose parents make less than 50,000 a year will be considered first. The Scholarship will be called the Phoenix Scholarship.

My only practical request is this, the songs of my choice played at my funeral.

Formerly the Flagler Hotel...Henry Flagler originally built this as a winter resort for wealthy northern vacationers that wanted to get away from the snow...From here, he extended the railroads into south Florida and was therefore instrumental in opening up the lower part of the state for development.

Eventually the hotel was purchased and is now Flagler College...a fine arts college...with beautiful architecture...as Mr. Flagler spared no expense in the buildings for his original clientele. there are many dramatic and expensive examples of fine craftsmanship from all over the world in these buildings, including the beautiful glass work, crystal, and chandeliers. It is a main tourist stop for visitors and tours are given daily...a magically designed place to me with many photo ops.

This is Bibsy one of our cats. The only light was from a north facing window.

This is part of an ongoing experiment with my Canon 30D DSLR in RAW mode and colored filters that I used to use with B&W film. This show was taken with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens and a Minolta Y52 yellow filter.

The only post processing work is done with Rawshooter Premium, which was used to desaturate (remove color information from the file) the image and a bit of levels work also done right in Rawshooter.

Photoshop CS2 was used to edit the exif (so you can read this) and convert from a 16bit tiff over to an 8 bit jpeg and then resize the image for the web.

En de 2,5 uur B2B-set van San & Santito is altijd van een hoog niveau. Ze voelen elkaar uitstekend aan en dat zie en hoor je zeker terug in hun set. Dus ik zou zeggen, kom ook eens langs. Aerogarden - Day 27 - The Roots

It's a day early, but the low water light was lit up, so I went ahead to do a rinse & refill. You can see how well the roots are doing. SInce we've been seeing some brown edges on our basil, I take this opportunity to switch to distilled water instead of the purified (with our Pur filter) water.

the haircut part 3 - flowbee time!

In an effort not to burn out the motor of the trimmer or clog up the blade beyond repair (in which case we'd really be screwed), we dug out the old Flowbee (which I use to shave Chester's fur sometimes--no dirty jokes, please), and decided to get rid of the bulk that way.

The Flowbee requires a vacuum cleaner. Our old vacuum just didn't have enough juice because the filter was totally clogged with dust and fur from the last time we used it. There was no time to give the filter a thorough cleaning under the water faucet since it needs to be completely dry before using.

So, we brought out our brand new Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner that Lisa and John bought us for our wedding. It's pretty darn powerful and I had full faith that we'd be back in action soon. Wrong! The Flowbee hose adapter did not fit the hose on the Dirt Devil. They were the same size! No male part to put into the female part. Gaaaah! Now what?!

Brian ended up just holding the Flowbee hose against the vacuum hose. Not perfect, but better than nothing. The suction wasn't very good and I couldn't get a good even trim. Ah well, at least we got most of the bulk off....

It's a dangerous moment. The more I see pictures from the Prominent, the less I want to part with it.

The only thing I can think about doing, as a means of a compromise, is to purchase a Pominent mount -> Leica M mount adapter, then use the Nokton on an M9.

Wait. That'll cost more than getting a CFV for my Hasselblad, which is the reason why I've decided to sell off a chunk of my gear.

Hrmmmmm. Something tells me that compromise won't work.

On a completely unrelated note, our city's been in a "Boil-Water" order status since yesterday, for the forseeable future. We went to the supermarket today and the bottled water section was cleared out :lol:

Like, don't people know how to boil water??

What's inconvenient is not drinking water (we filter with Brita then boil then cool before drinking) but rather kitchen & bathroom stuff.

Like it's sooooo easy to forget to rinse my toothbrush with sanitized water instead of faucet water :-D

"The 'mod bug' bit early. Oh, sure, it started off innocently enough - a K&N filter here, some exhaust mods there, and some computer recalibration. It now sports an LT1 that's been punched out to 396 cid (6.5L for the metric weenies out there) and topped with ported LT4 heads and intake manifold. A Canton oil pan, pump, and pickup solved some early oiling problems, and a Walbro fuel pump and 30lb SVO injectors work to deliver sufficient amounts of 93 octane. A sizable Comp Cams Xtreme Energy bumpstick and 11.7:1 compression ratio result in instant power at any engine speed. It's backed by a McLeod twin-disc clutch and a Borg Warner/Tremec T56 6-speed manual that was built with a combination of GM F-body and Dodge Viper components, which transfers the power to a 4" MMC driveshaft from Denny's. The suspension has been beefed up with Koni adjustable shocks, huge swaybars (33mm up front and 38mm out back), and spring rates normally reserved for heavy-duty trucks. With the exception of the basic machine work on the engine block and mounting/balancing tires, I've performed damn near every bit of work on this car myself (including the fabrication of the manual transmission swap components).

"I love this car because it's a great sleeper (the only appearance mods are a red Bowtie up front and a pair of Borla exhaust tips in the rear), but I hate it because it rarely makes it between oil changes without breaking something. That seems to be a consequence of having a significant amount of power at the flywheel and a lot of mass at the contact patch. In the end, though, it's worth it, as the car is an expression of my wrench-turning, fabrication, and tuning skills. Plus, it's incredibly amusing to whip the big burgundy bruiser around an autocross course faster than cars that it really shouldn't be beating, and it sounds and looks great while doing it."

Windows XP Pro!!! Happily tamed and running in it's own little window inside of Fedora Linux VirtualBox!!! There was ONE thing I did easilly in Winblows that was proving to be a pain in Linux, recording streaming audio. So...I created a virtual windows to run my favorite stream ripper in! Hey, I bought and paid for them, might as well still make use of them on my terms rofl!!!

After we landed in Orlando I talked the flight crew into rebooting the entire system so I could take this picture. The guy in the green shirt knew a little about linux but the rest of the flight crew thought I was nuts.

They could also reboot each seat individually. I suspect there was some sort of mini-itx system built in to each console.
